Introduction: Adolescents need balanced nutrition to increase physical growth and development very rapidly. In Indonesia, the nutritional problems in adolescents are complex, namely obesity, malnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies such as anemia. Adolescent nutritional status is influenced by various factors such as eating behavior and body image. Objective: This study aims to identify the relationship between eating behavior, body image, and nutritional status of adolescents. Method: The research design used cross-sectional. Respondents were 62 teenagers at SMAK Karitas 3 Surabaya who met the inclusion criteria and was taken using a simple random sampling technique. Eating behavior was assessed using the Eating Behavior Patterns Questionnaire. Body image is assessed by questionnaire and adolescent nutritional status is based on body mass index. Results: The study showed that 56.5% of adolescents had a positive body image, 93.5% of adolescents with healthy eating behavior and 35.5% of nutritional status based on body mass index were in the normal category. Spearman correlation test showed that there was a significant relationship between body image and adolescent nutritional status, with a negative correlation (p = 0.0001, r = -0.447). There was no relationship between eating behavior and nutritional status of adolescents (p=0.711). Conclusion: Body image is related to nutritional status, where the increase in nutritional status will be followed by a decrease in body image. Although the eating behavior of adolescents is healthy, they still experience nutritional status disorders, namely overweight and obesity, so further research needs to be done regarding other factors such as a physical activity that can affect the nutritional status of adolescents

Objetivos: Conocer la prevalencia de la adicción a la comida de acuerdo a la edad, sexo e índice de masa corporal, y determinar la asociación entre la adicción a la comida y el estado nutricional en adolescentes del norte de México. Método: Estudio descriptivo correlacional de corte transversal, realizado durante agosto y septiembre de 2018. La población se conformó por 630 adolescentes estudiantes de 15 a 17 años de edad, de una preparatoria pública en Nuevo León, México, a los que se les realizaron mediciones antropométricas y se empleó el cuestionario Yale Food Addiction Scale. Resultados: Una muestra de 245 adolescentes, predominando el sexo femenino (53,1%), con una edad media de 15,83 años, la media de índice de masa corporal fue de 23,18 kg/mt2 (S = 3,74) en hombres y 24,57 kg/mt2 (S = 4,00) en mujeres. El 87,8% de los adolescentes presentó positivo el criterio “deseo frustrado de parar el consumo”, el 36,3% la tolerancia, y el 34,3% el consumo a pesar de las consecuencias. El 20,7% de los adolescentes con sobrepeso presentan adicción a la comida. Conclusiones: La mayoría de los adolescentes presentan peso normal, las mujeres presentaron un índice de masa corporal mayor que el de los hombres, menos de la mitad de los participantes presenta adicción a la comida predominando los criterios positivos en mujeres, adolescentes en condición de sobrepeso, obesidad y de mayor edad. No se encontró asociación entre adicción a la comida y estado nutricional. Objective: To know the prevalence of food addiction according to age, sex, and body mass index and to determine the association between food addiction and nutritional status in adolescents from northern México. Method: Cross-sectional study with a descriptive and correlational design, carried out during August and September 2018; the study population was comprised by 630 adolescents, students, ranging from 15 to 17 years of age, from a public high school in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Anthropometric measurements were taken and the Yale Food Addiction Scale questionnaire was used. Results: A sample of 245 adolescents predominantly female (53.1%), with a mean age of 15.83 years; mean body mass index was 23.18 kg/mt2 (S = 3.74) in males and 24.57 kg/mt2 (S = 4.00) in females; 87.8% of adolescents showed positive to the frustrated desire to stop consumption criterion, 36.3% tolerance, and 34.3% consumption despite the consequences; 20.7% of overweight adolescents showed food addiction. Conclusions: The majority of adolescents showed normal weight, while women showed a body mass index (BMI) higher than men; less than half of the participants had food addiction; positive criteria prevailed in women, and adolescents with overweight and obesity, and older. No association was found between food addiction and nutritional status.

Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells. Hemoglobin levels that are less than normal or anemia can cause complications in the form of fatigue and stress on the body's organs. Nutritional status is one of the factors that can affect hemoglobin levels. Measurement of nutritional status can be done through several methods including anthropometry and clinical laboratories. Among these methods, the most frequently used in the field is anthropometry using body mass index (BMI) and upper arm circumference (LLA). This study aims to determine the hemoglobin level and nutritional status of the assisted families located in Uteunkot Cunda Village, Lhokseumawe. This study is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach to determine the description of hemoglobin levels and nutritional status based on indicators of Body Mass Index and Upper Arm Circumference in the fostered family. The sampling technique used is total sampling with a total of 79 respondents. The results obtained were the average hemoglobin level of the respondents was 12.34 g/dL in the normal category. Nutritional status based on Body Mass Index, most respondents were in normal nutritional status as many as 27 respondents (34.2%). The most nutritional status based on upper arm circumference was malnutrition, namely 55 respondents (69.6%).

Background: The World Health Organization has described obesity as one of today’s most neglected public health problems. Body image is a psychosocial dimension of body size that encompasses both perceptual and attitudinal factors and has been associated with eating disorders. Adolescents are becoming over conscious of their body image. Body weight perception refers to the personal evaluation of one’s weight irrespective of actual BMI. The objectives of the study was to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity, body image perception and weight control practices among college going adolescents girls and to determine differences between existing BMI and body image perception among college going adolescents girls. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among college going adolescents girls in Mysore district, two colleges were randomly selected and 661 study participants were participated in the study. Data was collected through a self-administered pre tested structured questionnaire and height and weight were measured using standard tools to calculate body mass index. Results: Among the study percipients prevalence of overweight and obesity was found to be 36 (5.4%) and 43 (6.5%) respectively, whereas 70 (10.6) feel they are obese and 386 (59.2%) were ever practiced weight control methods. Body image perception and actual weight were found to statistically significant. Conclusions: Perception about body image as obese was higher among adolescents. Hence adolescents should be given education regarding body mass index and expected BMI for their age and about appropriate dietary practices.

The aim was to determine the prevalence of obesity and overweight among students in the Kumasi metropolis. In a descriptive cross-sectional study, 500 students aged 10 to 20 years were examined from two junior high schools selected by multistage sampling technique and three randomly selected senior high schools. Height and weight were measured in all participants and the body mass index (BMI) of each individual was calculated. Body mass index classes were calculated according to the International Obesity Task Force standards. Out of the 500 students, 290 (58.00%) were males and 210 (42.00%) were females. The prevalence of underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity was 7.40%, 79.60%, 12.20%, and 0.80%, respectively. Overweight was more prevalent among students than obesity. There is therefore the need to establish effective public health promotion campaigns among students in order to curtail future implications on health.

Introduction: Physical inactivity is reported among 41% of Nigerians and 73.8% of adults in Calabar have been reported to be either overweight or obese. Obesity is a chronic disorder marked by excessive generalized deposition and storage of fat in human body. It is indicated by a Body Mass Index of 30kg/m2 and above. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among the staff of the University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria.Methods: A total of 321 staff in University of Calabar participated in this cross sectional study. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select faculties, departments, offices and respondents. Data was collected using a semi-structured and self administered questionnaire, a well calibrated weighing scale, a calculator and a checklist. Data analysis was done using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20.0.Results: Of the 321 respondents, 55.1% were males and 60.0% were non-teaching. One hundred and twenty nine (40.0%) of the staff were 31-40 years. A total of 43.6% had normal weight, 35.5% were overweight while 19.6% were obese. A total of 45.1% were estimated to be physically inactive and 24.0% did not intend to begin exercises within the next six months. Majority, 91.3% of respondents were knowledgeable about overweight/obesity and 60.4% correctly mentioned at least one possible health implication of overweight/obesity but only 24.3% could define overweight and obesity based on Body Mass Index and most staff (72.0%) believed they had normal weight. Conclusion: The percentage of those found to be either overweight or obese is remarkable and the need to educate staff of the implication and ways to avoid over-nutrition. To avoid the increased risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases including communicable diseases, preventive health education and regular health checks for staff are recommended.

ABSTRACT: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BODY MASS INDEX AND TYPES OF INGUINAL HERNIA Background: One of the risk factors that can influence or increase the incidence of inguinal hernia is overweight and obesity. Body mass index (BMI) is a simple way to see the nutritional status of adults, especially with regard to underweight and overweight.Objective: To determine the relationship between Body Mass Index and the type of inguinal herniaResearch Methods: The design in this study used a cross sectional design. The population in this study were all inguinal hernia patients at Pertamina Bintang Amin Hospital Bandar Lampung in 2019-2020. The sample in this study amounted to 98 people using purposive sampling technique. Where patients with congenital hernia, chronic cough, and comorbid disease, were excluded from the study. The data obtained were analyzed using the chi square statistical test.Result: 18 respondents (20.45%) patients diagnosed with lateral inguinal hernia had normal weight and 70 respondents (79.55%) other respondents diagnosed with lateral inguinal hernia. Meanwhile, 6 respondents (60%) who were diagnosed with medial inguinal hernia were overweight-obese, while the other 4 respondents (40%) who were diagnosed with medial inguinal hernia were overweight-obese. The results of the bivariate statistical test using chi square obtained a p-value of 0.013.Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between body mass index and the type of inguinal hernia. Keywords: Body Mass Index, Lateral Inguinal Hernia, Medial Inguinal Hernia  INTISARI: HUBUNGAN ANTARA INDEKS MASSA TUBUHDENGAN JENISHERNIA INGUINALIS  Latar Belakang:Salah satu faktor resiko yang dapat mempengaruhi atau meningkatkan angka kejadian dari hernia inguinal adalah overweight dan obesitas. Indeks massa tubuh (IMT) merupakan cara sederhana untuk melihat status gizi orang dewasa, khususnya yang berkaitan dengan kekurangan dan kelebihan berat badan.Tujuan: Untuk mengetahui hubungan antara Indeks Massa Tubuh dengan jenis hernia inguinalisMetode Penelitian:Rancangan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan desain cross sectional. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh pasien hernia inguinalis sebanyak di RS Pertamina Bintang Amin Bandar Lampung tahun 2019-2020.Sampel pada penelitian ini berjumlah 98 orang dengan menggunakan tekhnikpurposive sampling. Dimana pasien dengan hernia kongenital, batuk kronis, dan penyakit komorbid, diekslusi dari penelitian. Data yang diperoleh dianalisa menggunakan uji statistic chi square.Hasil penelitian:Didapatkan 18 responden (20,45%) pasien yang didiagnosa hernia inguinalis lateralis memiliki berat badan normal dan 70 responden (79,55%) responden lainnya yang didiagnosa hernia inguinalis lateralis. Sementara itu, 6 responden (60%) responden yang didiagnosa hernia inguinalis medialis memiliki berat badan overweight-obesitas sedangkan 4 responden lainnya (40%) yang didiagnosa hernia inguinalis medialis memiliki berat badan overweight-obesitas.Hasil uji statistik bivariat menggunakan chi square diperoleh nilai p-value 0,013.Kesimpulan:Terdapat hubungan yang bermakna antara indeks massa tubuh dengan jenis hernia inguinalis. Kata kunci: Indeks Massa Tubuh, Hernia Ingunalis Lateralis, Hernia Inguinalis          Medialis

Background: Media use has become increasingly common among  young people, in both developed and developing countries. Screen media are particularly popular as they provide a wide variety of information and entertainment. Excess use of these has been associated with several negative impacts, among which is the potential risk of inducing or promoting overweight and obesity, through various mechanisms including promotion of a sedentary lifestyle.Objectives: To establish a relationship between prolonged and excessive use of media and the body mass index of students in secondary schoolsMethods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out among 630 secondary school students within Ilorin metropolis. Subjects were selected using a multi-staged, stratified sampling technique. Semi-structured questionnaire were used to obtain socio-demographic data and use of media. The weight and height of the subjects were obtained and body mass index was calculated as the ratio of weight to height squared.Results: A total of 630 students participated in the study, 300 (47.6%) were male and 330 (52.4%) were female. Television was the commonest  medium used by 94.9% students, followed by mobile phones (69.2%). Seven point three percent of the students were overweight and 5.2% were obese. Overweight and obese students spent a longer total time on screen media than other s (p=0.002).Conclusion: Media use is common in Nigerian children and there was significant association between prolonged use of screen media and being overweight and obese in the students Keywords: Media, Screen, Overweight, Students

Objectives: To assess the Nutritional Status by measuring Body Mass Index and screening of School going children of Khairpur Mirus Sindh. Study Design: Cross Sectional Descriptive Study. Setting: Department of Pediatrics, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro. Period: From 1st May to 31st May 2015. Material & Methods: Over 2400 children (age 5 to 18 years) studying at schools of Taluka Khairpur Mirus, Sindh. We conducted this study at 40 schools, both from government and private sector. Schools included Primary, Secondary, High and Higher Secondary Schools. Medical History was taken and detailed physical examination done, including Cardiovascular Examination, Eye and Abdominal Examination. History of presence of worms in stool was taken from children. Anemia was checked by palmer inspection. Weight and height was taken by well-trained doctors and paramedical staffs with the help of weight machine and stadiometer. Results: Out of total 2400 children 43.4% were male and 56.6% were female. Mean BMI was 15.97, while mean weight was 30.93 kg and mean height was 136.92 cm. Among 730 children, who were underweight, 54.5% children were mild underweight, while 29.7% children were moderate underweight and 15.7% children were severe underweight. 6% children were overweight, while 4% children were obese. Anemia was present in 63.04% children, Eye Squint was present in 3.1% children, worms infestations were present in 0.2% children and murmur was detected in 0.1% children. Conclusion: We found significant number of children having low BMI (30.4%) and the Mean BMI was 15.97. We also found significant number of children having underweight that is 54.5% children were mild underweight, while 29.7% children were moderate underweight and 15.7% children were severe underweight. On the other hand, overweight and obesity was less common, 6% children were overweight, while 4% children were obese. During Screening, Anemia was (63.04%) and Eye Squint (3.1%) was the most common clinical findings.

(1) Background: Adolescence is a period of increased autonomy and independent decision making; it determines health behaviors that can persist into the future. Individual factors like food choices and unhealthy lifestyle have an essential role in the development and prevention of obesity among adolescents and are associated with the nutrition literacy of parents and other adults. While the association of parents’ nutrition literacy with adolescent BMI has been addressed, there is still a scarcity of studies that examine the effect of adolescents’ nutrition literacy on their eating habits and body mass index (BMI) status. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted that included 189 adolescents (68 with overweight and obesity and 121 with normal weight) aged between 14–19 years from four private schools in Tripoli, Lebanon. A self-administered questionnaire that included the Nutrition Literacy Assessment Instrument (NLAI) and the Adolescent Food Habits Checklist (AFHC) was used. Anthropometrics were measured using standardized procedures. The association between nutrition literacy, food habits and BMI was assessed using a chi squared test for independence and Poisson regression analysis where suitable. (3) Results: Results indicated no association between all five components of nutrition literacy and body mass index categories. Furthermore, there was no association between the Adolescent Food Habits Checklist and overweight or obese BMI status (RR = 0.947, 95%CI: 0.629–1.426) (p = 0.796). No association was observed between nutrition literacy and food habits, except for an inverse association with macronutrients literacy. (4) Conclusions: In conclusion, the study indicated that there was no association between the components of nutrition literacy with body mass index or with food habits, except for macronutrient literacy.

A community-based cross-sectional study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of undernutrition using body mass index (BMI) among 2–6-year Santal preschool children of Purulia District, West Bengal, India. A total of 251 (116 boys and 135 girls) children from 12 villages were measured. Commonly used indicators, that is, weight, height, and BMI, were used to evaluate the nutritional status. More boys (59.5%) than girls (53.3%), based on BMI, were undernourished. Significant age differences in weight (F=44.29∗∗∗; df=3), height (F=58.48∗∗∗; df=3), and BMI (F=3.52∗∗∗; df=3) among boys were observed. Similarly, significant differences between ages in mean weight (F=56.27∗∗∗; df=3), height (F=64.76∗∗∗; df=3), and BMI (F=2.62∗∗∗; df=3) were observed among the girls. The present study revealed that the nutritional status of the preschool children of Santal tribal community of these villages was poor with very high rate of thinness in boys and girls (59.5% and 53.3%, resp.).
