The study was intended to find out whether the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) was a better alternative to the manual system in the process of selection of qualified students in the Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. A sample size of 306 was selected from a population of 994. Stratified and simple random sampling procedures were employed to select the subjects in the study sample. Respondents to the questionnaire and interview were randomly selected. A pilot study was conducted in the Eastern Region to test the validity and reliably of the instrument. The Cronbach alpha coefficient reliability at 0.7 was recorded. The data generated was processed and converted into percentages to facilitate the analysis and discussion processes. The results indicated that the introduction of the CSSPS did not significantly increase enrolment in the least endowed schools; neither did it minimize the preference for endowed schools. However, the CSSPS significantly minimized the human errors that characterized the manual system and accelerated the rate of selection and placement process. The major challenge to the CSSPS was the human factor in terms of refusal of parents and students to accept placement into other schools apart from their chosen endowed schools. It is recommended that the CSSPS should be used in combination with other placement systems such as the Random Placement Systems to achieve a mixed talent distribution of students across the schools in the study area.

The morpho-syntactic and socio-pragmatic analysis of proverbs use on radio and T.V.: “Traditional priests of doom, if you wish for the destruction of a town, …” Agyekum (2000) and Wiafe-Akenten (2015) have observed an extensive use of proverbs in the media since the establishment of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in 1954. This paper therefore examines how these proverbs are used in radio and television programmes, especially in the Morning Shows and News broadcast in Akan. These programmes are socio-political, in which some of the issues discussed are very sensitive, delicate and inflammatory. The paper focuses on investigating how participants of these programmes employ proverbs in handling such difficult issues in their interactions, especially within this highly formal setting. Data for this study was sourced from Peace F.M., Adom F.M, GTV, UTV, (all in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana) Kessben F.M. (in the Ashanti Region of Ghana) and Ɔboɔba F.M. (in the Eastern Region of Ghana). Recordings of 6:00a.m, 12 noon and 6:00p.m. News from the radio stations and Television stations, and those of the Morning Shows from 6am-10am constituted the data for the study. Also, follow-up interviews were conducted after the recordings were transcribed for further analysis. The text and their context were discussed using Fairclough’s (1995 and 2012) and Fairclough & Wodak’s (1997) approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The study specifically looked at the structural and lexical content of the proverbs, the motivation behind choice of certain proverbs and socio-pragmatic functions of the selected proverbs. Findings from the study showed that, some presenters and hosts of the programmes utilized proverbs as facesaving, mitigating and softening strategies. It was also concluded that majority of the politicians also employed the proverbs as indirectional strategies, escape routes, and evasive tools. They either removed or added their own words to strategically manipulate the proverbs to carry out and/or suit their intended message.

Rapid liberalization of education sector in India has resulted in increased competition. As a result, we have witnessed rapid rise in number of management institutes. The student's evaluation about an institute/college is based on multiple criteria. Realizing the need a focused review on the literature was made to understand the subject. The review highlighted that conventional methods for B-school evaluation are inadequate for dealing with the imprecise, uncertain or vague nature of linguistic assessment. To overcome this difficulty, due to MCDM problem, Fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making methods are proposed. The aim of this study is to use fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and Analytical Hierarchal process (AHP) methods for the selection of better B-school. The proposed methods have been applied to a B-School selection problem of the students of NCR and results are presented. This chapter contributes to previous researches by adding a new avenue, where the MCDM technique can be useful. The selection of an institution for getting a professional degree is a very tough task for the students and as well as for their guardians. This method can help them to find a better solution by providing a quantitative framework.

This descriptive study explores the impact of washback on ESL students’ performance at secondary level. In this study, the term “washback” refers to the test effect on content of curriculum, learning English, teaching and the activities conducted in classroom. The factors other than the test itself may affect positive washback; lack of positive washback does not make test invalid whereas the negative washback effect occurs when there is lack of construct validity of test. Test design and validity plays vital role in achieving positive washback (Messick, 1996). The study aims to investigate the effects of positive washback and benefits in learning and teaching processes in ESL classrooms, while negative washback effects are destructive and can be a hindrance in achieving the goals in ESL classrooms. Recent research is descriptive in nature and survey based method was adopted for this study. 50 teachers were selected by using purposive sampling technique and 100 students were selected by using simple random sampling technique. Three tools were used for this study including: Questionnaire, Test and Observation checklist. The findings of the study exhibit that negative washback effect has its influence on tests, learning and teaching. The study concludes with a realization of the fact that language pedagogy is affected by washback. However, it is claimed by majority of the teachers that washback affects the selection of teaching methods because exams stress brings pressure and it becomes necessary for English teachers to develop linguistic competence in their students. For future researches it is recommended that other studies should be made in order to find out the impact of washback on the strategies adopted by learners while learning second language.

Version of relay protection construction of relative selectivity is proposed, which allows increasing its technical perfection and reliability in microgrids with distributed generation sources. This is done by increasing the dimension of the measurement space along arbitrary axes, introducing new methods of recognizing emergency modes, as well as automating the selection of response parameters. Hardware implementation of protection is described. Recommendations for calculating the settings of multidimensional protection and an example of calculation are given. Protection coordination is carried out by using graphical-analytical methods in automatic mode. Automation of the calculation, elimination of the human factor will make it possible to apply the method for adaptation of protection in the conditions of dynamic change of microgrid topology.
