This article examines our on-going attempts to operationalise a critical qualitative research approach – drifting, which we have adopted from the feminist collective Precarias a la deriva, – in order to conduct research with people who have arrived in Finland as asylum seekers and refugees, as well as with the civic activists who work by their side. Our research focuses on the everyday bordering practices that exclude asylum seekers and refugees, and the activities of de-bordering. The article claims that drifting combines the advantages of mobile research methods with the critical and collective praxis of activist research, which allows the upsurge of non-hegemonic knowledge. Drifting holds great promise for exploring everyday borders and their consequences, which usually remain hidden to the majority of native residents. In drifting, the injustices that occur at borders within countries in Europe are not only exposed for research and the wider public, but they are also challenged with research-based interventions.

This article explores the merit of using Organic Inquiry, a qualitative research approach that is most effectively applied to areas of psychological and spiritual growth. Organic Inquiry is a research approach where the psyche of the researcher becomes the instrument of the research, working in partnership with the experiences of participants and guided by liminal and spiritual influences. Organic Inquiry is presented as a unique methodology that can incorporate other non-traditional research methods, including intuitive, autoethnographic and creative techniques. The validity and application of Organic Inquiry, as well as its strengths and limitations are discussed in the light of the author’s recent investigation into the nature of Self.

BackgroundAsylum seekers and refugees often experience poor health in host countries. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees requires hosts to ensure these sanctuary seekers have access to basic health care.AimTo identify barriers and facilitators that affect access to health care by asylum seekers and refugees in Wales.Design & settingParticipatory research approach using qualitative focus groups across Wales, which hosts 10,000 refugees..MethodEight focus groups with asylum seekers, refugees and support workers and volunteers.(n=57)ResultsSpecialist NHS-funded services and grant-aided Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) facilitate access to health care, including primary care. Most asylum seekers and refugees understand the role of general practice in providing and coordinating care but are unaware of services out of hours. Reported barriers include: language difficulties, health literacy, unrecognised needs, and the cost of travel to appointments. Participants recognise the importance of mental health, but were disappointed by the state of mental health care. Some fear seeking support for mental health from their GP, but few are aware they have the right to move practice if they were unhappy. Written information about health care is not as accessible to refugees as to asylum seekers. While some participants read such material before consulting, others struggle to access information when in need. Few participants are aware of health prevention services. Even when they know about services like smoking cessation, these services’ difficulty in accommodating asylum seekers and refugees is a barrier.ConclusionMain barriers are: availability of interpreters; knowledge about entitlements; and access to specialist services.

This article explores the use of interviews as a tool for relationship development in the context of conducting mixed methods qualitative research during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. It demonstrates that beyond being a source of data, interviews can be instrumental in opening doors to hard to reach informants and can form bridges between phases of fieldwork. This article draws on my PhD project which is looking at a single case study charity working with asylum seekers and refugees. The research is being undertaken through the view of a leadership-as-practice lens but the implications for how we view interviews may be of relevance to a wide range of mixed methods qualitative research. In particular, researchers whose work requires them to gain and maintain access may benefit from a more explicit consideration of the normally implicit ways interviews are used as tools in research.

The present article focuses on the use of information technology in education in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, analyzing the sustainability of online learning methods, as reflected in students’ attitude towards the researched topic. The paper aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability in education, despite challenges and changes which may occur in our society. Based on an inductive research approach, qualitative research methods (e.g. the questionnaire) are used in the present paper, according to the modern trend of using qualitative research methods in the field of economic papers. The research approach is interdisciplinary, considering aspects of economics, sociology and psychology. The research findings illustrate the fact that on a short-term basis, online learning may be implemented in universities with success, but on a long-term basis, a hybrid system based on blended learning must be designed in order to ensure sustainability in education. The research may have a social impact beyond academia, as it relates to sustainability in education
