This chapter explains on how the FBI’s relationship with various American religious groups complicates the typical category of religion-and-state issues. It begins with the post-9/11 era then relates the long history of the FBI engaging with religion. The chapter explains how the bureau has practiced skepticism toward religion at times while also seeking an alliance with religion at other times. The chapter argues for the importance of situating the post-9/11 era within a longer history of the FBI’s interaction with America’s religious communities.

Despite a robust literature on general forms of state repression, the determinants of religious repression remain unclear. This article argues that a regime’s experience with religious conflict will lead it to be more repressive of religious groups within its territory for three primary reasons. Religious conflict increases the behavioral threat posed by religious groups, lowers the cost of repressing these communities, and evokes vivid memories of past religious violence that underscore the role of the state in taming religion to maintain social order. New, cross-national data on religious conflict and repression from 1990 to 2009 show that religious conflict has a significant and positive effect on the level of religious repression for the time period under investigation, expanding the types and severity of government restrictions on religion in a country. Our findings point to the importance of studying the causes and nature of negative sanctions against religious communities, specifically.

Religion is an imaginary world. Communism, which has a very heinous problem with theology, causes distrust of God and even causes them to be anti-God, anti-Religion, and even aggressive towards religious groups. The purpose of this research is to see the utilization of zakat funds collected and managed by Lazismu Solo, whether it succeeds in converting mustahik into muzaki or obtaining better than expected results. This field research employs qualitative analysis methods, with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and field observations. This result shows that the ZIS (Zakat, Infaq, and Alms) fund utilization program to convert mustahik into muzakki seen from the side of program implementation’s effectiveness and efficiency could be considered successful even though it has not been ideal yet in converting mustahik into muzaki. This success has only led to the mustahik becoming an independent Muslim and regardless of their initial status as a mustahik. In the future, this program must continue to be improved until it actually transforms mustahik into muzakki to become one of the ways to eradicate poverty.
