The structural, morphological, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of calcium (Ca) doped bismuth ferrite (BFO) synthesized using a sol-gel method were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis followed by Rietveld refinement revealed the lattice distortion of BFO after doping with 6% and 8% Ca. This also led to the reduction in particle size by creating oxygen vacancies, which was observed from the surface morphology using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The Magnetic properties exhibited some enhancements in saturation magnetization when the particle size was near a limiting value. The reduction in the coercive magnetic field with the increase in dopant concentration was also evident from the M-H hysteresis loop measured by Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The Ferroelectric P-E hysteresis loop exhibited an increased symmetry in the hysteresis loop and increase in the polarization with the increase in %Ca. The 8% Ca doped BFO exhibited an incomplete saturation in the hysteresis loop and was evident to exhibit leakage current characteristics. Journal of Engineering Science 11(1), 2020, 123-131

Pure BiFeO3 (BFO), Ca-doped and Eu/Ca-codoped BFO nanoparticles were prepared by using a sol–gel method. The effects of Eu/Ca-codoped on the structural, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of the samples were studied. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals a structure transition in the codoped samples. Co-doped samples were obtained with the best ferromagnetic properties, with the largest remaining magnetization Mr = 0.20 emμ/g. The structure transition may be the main cause for the origin of improved magnetic properties, which destroys the space modulated spin structure of BFO and releases the locked magnetic. In addition, the doping of Eu into BFO can reduce the leakage current and enhance the ferroelectric properties.

ABSTRACTIn this paper, thin films of La- modified (Bi,La)FeO3-PbTiO3 (BLF-PT) morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) solid solutions have been prepared by using sol-gel processing. A thin Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) template layer was introduced to make BLF-PT thin films adhere tightly to the platinized silicon (Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si) substrate. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that BLF-PT thin films were of the perovskite structure without detectable pyrochlore phase annealing at 650–750°C. The cross sectional and plain view images of or our specimen were observed by using the scan electrical microscope (SEM). The room temperature dielectric constant K and tanδ were of ∼800 and 4% respectively, for BLF-PT thin films using a measurement frequency of 1 kHz. Our preliminary experiments indicated that the sol-gel derived BLF-PT thin films have good insulation resistance and measurable dielectric and ferroelectric responses.

In this work, the effect of the inoculation of silver-incorporated titanium dioxide nanoparticles (Ag-TiO2 NPs) in spinach seeds was evaluated on certain growth, physiology and phytotoxicity parameters of the plants. This is an important crop for human consumption with high nutritional value due to their low calorie and fat content, providing various vitamins and minerals, especially iron. These NPs were obtained by means of the sol-gel method and heat treatment; the resulting powder material was characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy and the influence of these NPs on plants was measured by estimating the germination rate, monitoring morphological parameters and evaluating phytotoxicity. The photosynthetic activity of the spinach plants was estimated through the quantification of the Ratio of Oxygen Evolution (ROE) by the photoacoustic technique. Samples of TiO2 powder with particle size between 9 and 43 nm were used to quantify the germination rate, which served to determine a narrower size range between 7 and 26 nm in the experiments with Ag-TiO2 NPs; the presence of Ag in TiO2 powder samples was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The analysis of variance showed that the dependent variable (plant growth) could be affected by the evaluated factors (concentration and size) with significant differences. The statistical trend indicated that the application of the Ag-TiO2 NPs suspension of lowest concentration and smallest particle size could be a promoting agent of the growth and development of these plants. The inoculation with NPs of 8.3 nm size and lowest concentration was related to the highest average ROE value, 24.6 ± 0.2%, while the control group was 20.2 ± 0.2%. The positive effect of the Ag-TiO2 NPs treatment could be associated to the generation of reactive oxygen species, antimicrobial activity, increased biochemical attributes, enzymatic activity or improvements in water absorption.

Rare earth nano sized pollycrystalline orthoferrites and orthocromites ReT mO3 (Re = La, Nd, Gd, Dy, Y and T m = Fe, Cr) have been synthesized by sol-gel auto combustion citrate method. The samples have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and UV-visible spectroscopy. The samples are single phase as confirmed by XRD analysis and correspond to the orthorhombic crystal symmetry with space group pbnm. Debye Scherer formula and Williamson Hall analysis have been used to calculate the average grain size which is consistent with that of determined from SEM analysis and varied between 25-75 nm. The elemental compositions of all samples have been checked by EDX analysis. Different crystallographic parameters are calculated with strong structural correlation among Re and Tm sites. The optical energy band gap has been calculated by using Tauc relation estimated to be in the range of 1.77 - 1.87 eV and 2.77 - 3.14 eV, for ReFeO3 and ReCrO3, respectively.

AbstractBarium titanate (BaTiO3) 0–3 ceramic/ceramic composite thick films (∼16μm) for ultrasonic transducer applications were fabricated by a modified sol-gel process. Nano-sized BaTiO3 powder was dispersed in a sol-gel matrix of BaTiO3 to form a 0–3 composite solution. Films were prepared by spin coating and then annealed at various temperatures. The crystallization of the composite film was studied by X-ray diffraction. The dielectric permittivity and the ferroelectric properties of the film were also measured.

AbstractThe method described in this paper is a strict protocol for X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of mineral phases found in soils. Its application is not restricted to soils and is an attempt to standardize XRD sample preparation and analysis. The protocol requires the particle size of the < 2 mm - 0.002 mm fraction be reduced to 0.002 mm before analysis. In die qualitative section, the clay fraction ( < 0.002 mm particle size) is prepared as oriented slides. The suspended clay fraction is saturated with ethylene glycol, K +, and Mg+2; pipeted; air-dried; heat-treated at 110°C, 350°C, and 550°C; and X-rayed at each step in order to properly identify the clay minerals. In the quantitative section, the method employs a matrix-flushing agent, corundum (Al2O3). The corundum acts also as an internal standard, a calibration standard, and a reference standard. The suspended clay fraction is freeze-dried and corundum is added to each sample. Randomly oriented powder mounts are prepared from the < 2 mm - 0.002 mm fraction, and the < 0.002 mm fraction, and X-rayed. A series of reference standards are prepared based on the existing mineralogy, corundum is added, and each mixture is X-rayed. The software integrates the area under specific peaks (chosen for intensity and no overlap) in each sample, calculates the reference intensity ratios (RIRs) and calculates the percentage of each mineral based on the equation of Chung (1974). The attention to detail allows documentation and verification of the results yielding data of known quality.

The study of submicroscopic particles in already known systems has resulted in a renewed interest due to the large differences found in their properties when the particle size is reduced, and because of possible new technological applications. In this work we report the preparation of LaFeO3 particles by the sol-gel route, starting from a solution of the corresponding metallic nitrates and using urea as gelificant agent. Gels were decomposed at 200 °C and calcined 3 h at several temperatures, T, in the range 250–1000 °C. The samples were structurally characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD) showing that the orthoferrite crystallizes at T as low as 315 °C. From the x-ray diffraction peak broadening, the particle size was determined. The size increases from 60 to 300 nm as the calcination T increases. Infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize gels and calcined samples. From these studies a mechanism for the gel formation is proposed. Study of the magnetic properties of LaFeO3 particles shows the presence of a ferromagnetic component which diminishes as the calcination temperature increases, vanishing at T = 1000 °C.

Pure BiFeO3(BFO) and Bi0.9Nd0.1Fe0.925Mn0.075O3(BNFM) thin films were deposited on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate by sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that all the films were single perovskite structure and a phase transition appeared in Nd–Mn codoped BiFeO3 thin films. Electrical measurements indicated that the ferroelectric properties of BFO thin films were significantly improved by Nd and Mn codoping. BNFM films exhibit a low leakage current and a good P-E hysteresis loop. The remanent polarization (Pr) value of 74μC/cm2has been obtained in BNFM films, while the coercive field (Ec) is 184kV/cm.

In this study, multiferroicMultiferroic Bi1-xYxFe0.975Ni0.025O3 (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15) called as (Y, Ni)                co-doped BiFeO3 materials were synthesized by a sol-gel method.  and characterized by X-ray diffraction diagrams and(XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and vibrating sample magnetization (VSM) measurements demonstrated. The result showed that Bi1-xYxFe0.975Ni0.025O3all investigated materials waspresent a single phase of the perovskite-type rhombohedral structure. Ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity of the Bi1-xYxFe0.975Ni0.025O3 materials have been investigated. Results showed that the co-doping by (Y, Ni) for (Bi, Fe)  have affected in enhancing by the (Y, Ni) co-doping, as a result the ferroelectric polarization and magnetization of BiFeO3. The magnetic characterization indicated that the ferromagnetic behavior wasthe initial BiFeO3 materialwere enhanced with increasing concentration of Y3+ for (Y, Ni) co-substituted of BiFeO3. Which could beion. It is attributed to the defferentdifference of the magnetic momentmoments of Ni2+ and Fe3+, and+ ions, as well as the Y3+-Fe3+,+ and Y3+-Ni2+ super-exchange interaction. Theinteractions. The characteristics of the investigated materials, such as remanent magnetization (Mr), saturation magnetization (Ms), remanent polarization (2Pr) and saturation polarization (2Ps) continuously increase upon increasing in the range of x from 0.00 to 0.15. When x = 0.15, the values of Mr and Ms are 0.078 and 0.794 emu/g, respectively. The values of 2Pr and 2Ps are 16.58 and 27.99 µC/cm2, respectively. Origin of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties of Bi1-xYxFe0.975Ni0.025O3 materials will be discussed in this paper.

The ZnO-CdO nanocomposite was prepared by sol-gel method by using their respective nitrates. It is a simple and low cost method to prepare nanocomposites. The drying temperature and drying period of prepared gel was varied during the synthesis process. The prepared samples were characterized by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), particle size analysis (PSA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) to get surface morphology, idea of getting particle of nanosized range so that further characterizations can be done, to study the optical property of synthesized nanocomposite and measure the band gap . The grain size determined by Scherrer’s formula was found to be between 30-50 nm.
