Strong social forces operate to control the content of learning in those parts of the school curriculum that play a critical role in subsequent levels of education or career selection. The development of the senior science subject, Physical Science, is used as a case study for exploring the aspects of epistemology and curriculum organisation that evoke these sorts of forces. Interest in making science and technology more relevant and more accessible to all students at this level of schooling is evident in many recent international and Australian reports. Some of the difficulties that are likely to face such a direction for science education are suggested from the case study.

AbstractThis paper introduces project-based learning (PBL) features for developing technological, curricular, and pedagogical supports to engage students in computational thinking (CT) through modeling. CT is recognized as the collection of approaches that  involve people in computational problem solving. CT supports students in deconstructing and reformulating a phenomenon such that it can be resolved using an information-processing agent (human or machine) to reach a scientifically appropriate explanation of a phenomenon. PBL allows students to learn by doing, to apply ideas, figure out how phenomena occur and solve challenging, compelling and complex problems. In doing so, students  take part in authentic science practices similar to those of professionals in science or engineering, such as computational thinking. This paper includes 1) CT and its associated aspects, 2) The foundation of PBL, 3) PBL design features to support CT through modeling, and 4) a curriculum example and associated student models to illustrate how particular design features can be used for developing high school physical science materials, such as an evaporative cooling unit to promote the teaching and learning of CT.

Abstract Based on the survey, SMP Negeri 4 Semarang had many parrarel classes that it had?é?á 3 hours/week for science subject. To support it, this school was equipped by having a natural sciences labolatory. Actually, the teaching and learning process at the labolatory has been done well, but it needed to develop. Thus, they still need to buy?é?á reagent?é?á in chemistry store or health labolatory to help teaching natural sciences on practical work. Therefore, that chemistry reagent was not in new condition. Chemistry reagent which was kept too long in a storage place would decrease its ?é?áquality, then it will reduce the validation result if it is used for experiment on practical work.?é?á This case was caused by the teachers whose lack of skills in using the practical tools and understanding the function of these tools and materials. Then, we need a management in how to use practical work especially chemistry materials and reagent. The target of this program was natural sciences teachers, labolatory assistants and students of SMP Negeri 4 Semarang. The output result for this program was chemistry reagent and a set of equipment. This training makes the teachers and labolatory assistants more competent in providing chemistry reagent for natural sciences practical work autonomously. Key words: chemistry reagent, natural sciences teachers, labolatory assistants.

Learning and instruction in higher education may be primarily concerned in most cases with the content of their academic lessons, and not very much with their instructional delivery. However, effective instructional delivery with technology and based on sound learning theories has been known to have an impact on student performance. With the rapid development in the computer and multimedia technologies, it has become feasible to integrate multimedia technologies into the teaching and learning process. What has been the conventional teacher-centered teaching approach is now seeing a shift into one which emphasises on student-centered learning approach. There is a body of evidence that supports the benefit of using animations to assist learning. The domain knowledge applied in this study was on a Computer Science subject, for the topic of memory management. Memory management is one of the topics taught in the course on Operating Systems in Computer Science and Information Technology programmes. This chapter discusses the design and development of a courseware based on Mayer’s Cognitive theory of Multimedia learning, and the use of animation in the teaching and learning of a computer science subject. An instructional design model based on the theories discussed was then constructed and prototypes were developed in 3-D animation. A survey was then conducted on users’ instructional value and overall satisfaction and the results are reported.

The low enrolment, lack of interest, exacerbated by the general poor performance in physical science in South Africa paints a gloomy picture about the status of physical science in the country. Despite the fact that there might be other factors at play, one factor which cannot be ignored is the discourse about the use of language in the science classroom as viewed by physical science teachers. In the study reported on here a quantitative methodology was followed in which a closed-ended questionnaire survey was used as data collection tool. In the study we examined South African physical science teachers’ perceptions about the language use in science classrooms, and the study was informed by the Vygotskian socio-cultural theory (SCT). The target population from which a sample size of 37 physical science teachers was systematically sampled was high school classroom teachers and learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 in the Ngaka Modiri Molema district of the North West province of South Africa. The study revealed that physical science teachers encountered difficulties with meanings of non-technical words used in science context. The conclusion drawn was that many physical science teachers were not proficient in the discourse of the science classroom and this often compromised their effectiveness in the teaching and learning of science. The main difficulty was confusion in differentiating between technical and non-technical words and the lack of convincing explanations of meanings of these words in teaching and learning. Key among the recommendations of this study was the need to address teachers’ challenges with regard to the language use and the implications thereof.
