Metal surface pre-treatment is a known process and is used to increase corrosion performance as well as improve adhesion between the substrate and the paint layer. The present paper evaluated the corrosion resistance of carbon steel before and after treatment with nanoceramic coatings. The comparison was between a pure zirconia nanoceramic compound (Bonderite NT-1), with the addition of a dispersant (polyacrylic acid) and another nanoceramic coating developed from titanium oxide. Additionally, salt spray, open circuit potential (OCP), polarization and impedance tests were performed to obtain a methodology to quantitatively assess the quality of protection. The zirconia coating presented superior characteristics than the corrosion protection. The corrosion potential of this coating was about twice as low as the others. The addition of dispersant produced no significant improvements in corrosion resistance and was similar to uncoated carbon steel, possibly due to the high concentration used.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the performance of a fastener composite coating system, sherardized (SD) coating/zinc-aluminum (ZA) coating whether it has good performance in marine environment. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, SD coating was fabricated on fastener surface by solid-diffusion method. ZA coating was fabricated by thermal sintering method. Corrosion behaviours of the composite coating were investigated with potentiodynamic polarization curves, open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. Findings Neutral salt spray (NSS) and deep sea exposure tests revealed that the composite coating had excellent corrosion resistance. Polarization curve tests showed that corrosion current density of the sample with composite coating was significantly decreased, indicating an effective corrosion protection of the composite coating. OCP measurement of the sample in NaCl solution demonstrated that the composite coating had the best cathodic protection effect. The good corrosion resistance of the composite coating was obtained by the synergy of SD and ZA coating. Practical implications SD/ZA coating can be used in marine environment to prolong the life of carbon steel fastener. Social implications SD/ZA composite coating can reduce the risk and accident caused by failed fastener, avoid huge economic losses. Originality/value A new kind of composite coating was explored to protect the carbon steel fastener in marine environment. And the composite coating has the long-term anti-corrosion performance both in simulated and marine environment test.

To improve the corrosion resistance on Q235 low carbon steel, in this paper, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), N-dodecyl trimethoxysilane and γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (KH560) were used to make organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel film. Cross cut test adhesion method, neutral salt spray test, electrochemical test and film protective efficiency were taken to value the corrosion resistance property. The corrosion topography was studied by optical microscope. In addition, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) curves and equivalent electric circuit fitting were used to analyze the corrosion mechanism. The cross cut adhesion of sol-gel film can reach 1 class and the protection class can attain 5 class after 72 hours neutral salt spray test. According to the potentiodynamic polarization curve analysis, the corrosion potential of sol-gel film coating sample after 0.5 hours immersion was -0.46 V (vs. SCE) on the 0.1 Hz, and its corrosion current density was 4.74×10-7 A·cm-2. The corrosion potential of bare Q235 low carbon steel plate after 0.5 hours immersion was -0.78 V (vs. SCE) on the 0.1 Hz, and its corrosion current density was 4.75×10-6 A·cm-2. The impedance value on 0.1 Hz (|Z|0.1Hz) (1.27×106 Ω·cm2) of sol-gel film coating sample was more than three orders of magnitude higher than the value of the low carbon steel plate. Even dipping in 3.5 wt. % NaCl for 72 hours, the |Z|0.1Hz value of sol-gel coating sample was still one order of magnitude higher than the low carbon steel plate with 0.5 hours immersion. Sol-gel film with excellent adhesion can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of low carbon steel plate. Sol-gel film can increase the protection efficiency of low carbon steel plate by 90%.

The passivation behavior of carbon steel rods of Nepal is studied in 1 M HCl, 0.5 M NaCl and 1 M NaOH solutions at 25°C, open to air using corrosion tests and electrochemical measurements. The corrosion rate of all the examined steel rods is significantly lower in 1 M NaOH solution (about 10-3 mm/y) than those in 0.5 M NaCl (about 10-2 mm/y) and 1 M HCl (about 101-102 mm/y) solutions. The corrosion rate of SR71 steel rod is remarkably lower (3.65 mm/y) than those of other four different steel rods (3-4 x 102 mm/y) of Nepal in 1 M HCl solution. The ennoblement of the open circuit potentials of all the examined steel rod specimens is clearly observed in 1 M NaOH solution than those in 0.5 M NaCl and 1 M HCl solutions. The open circuit potentials of the steel rods are in the passive potential regions of the iron wire in 1 M NaOH solution. In this work, microstructure and corrosion properties of zinc electroplated steel before and after black chromating was investigated. The test samples were prepared by electrodeposition process, using a commercially-available alkaline electrolyte. Subsequently, the galvanized samples were applied with a black chromate-based passivation layer and a clear top-coat layer. Their microstructures were examined using X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion resistance of the samples was assessed with the salt spray test, following the ASTM B117, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization in 5 wt.% NaCl solutions. The study showed that zinc electroplated steels exhibit (110) crystallographic orientation. The passivation and top-coat layers did not affect the microstructure of the zinc layer, and covered uniformly on the zinc layer for all sets of samples. The corrosion resistant results obtained from salt spray testing and electrochemical testing revealed that the microstructure of zinc coatings prepared by using different applied current did not influence on their corrosion resistance markedly. While black passivation followed by top coating provided a significant improvement on corrosion resistance of the coatings.

Abstract The adhesion of coatings on a given substrate has fundamental importance on the functionality of a coating/substrate system. The current paper presents the adhesion strength results of FeCr and CoCr-based deposits produced by electric arc thermal spray process on carbon steel, with an intermediate layer of 95Ni5Al. Three chemical compositions were tested for coating deposition and was characterized using plate and tube specimens made of carbon steel UNS G10200 to result in a screening of performance. Microstructural evaluation by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed. Coating strength was measured using standard pull-off test method. The corrosion resistance was analyzed with salt spray exposure, electrochemical polarization and impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. The adhesion strength of FeCr and CoCr alloy coatings shows an overall average tensile strength of 27.2 MPa. All sealed conditions presented low corrosion and the samples with epoxy sealant exhibited a high resistance against corrosion. The X-ray diffraction results have revealed the presence of alpha and gamma FeCr alloys and chromite as deposited phases after the coating process.

The objective of the study was to conduct the comparative analysis of steel types corrosion resistance. Three selected steel types were used in the study. The selected types were structural steel, stainless steel, and MMFX steel. The methodology we adopted is that we evaluated the steel parts resistance towards corrosion by doing in-salt spray experiment and the immersion of aqueous solution of sodium chloride. For salt spray test, we used guidelines by ASTM B117. This practice provides a controlled corrosion environment which is used for exposing specimen to salt spray chamber. For immersion test, test specimens are analyzed at regular time interval as the first rust is appeared. For carbon steel, we used three specimen and mostly initial rust appeared in initial 13 to 15 hours. For stainless steel, inter granular corrosion were analyzed. The results show that the first cycle started after about 46 hours; the second cycle started about 1% and the third cycle started with the rage of about 2 to 30%. For MMFX 2 steel, the results show that for MMFX carbon steel, the chloride threshold ratio is about 6 times higher than black bars and more than double of other types. The conclusion of the study is that in big structures like bridges, the MMFX steel should be used.

Organosilicon films were deposited on carbon steel samples using remote microwave nitrogen plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition. The deposits were obtained using TetraMethyDisoloxane monomer mixed with oxygen. The formed films were characterised using electron microprobe analysis, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The electrochemical properties of the organosilicon coatings were evaluated using gravimetric experiments next to electrochemical tests. A significant increase in the corrosion resistance behaviour of the organosilicon coated carbon steel specimen was found when the samples were immersed in 3% aqueous sodium chloride solutions. Also, the surface pre-treatment process of carbon steel had an important influence on the morphological and electrochemical behaviour. Argon pre-treatment improves significantly the corrosion resistance or organosilicon coated steel samples. Gravimetric tests in particular showed that samples pre-treated with argon result in lower weight loss and decreased corrosion rates compared to interfaces pre-treated with nitrogen plasma. Ni/BN and NiCrAl/BN abradable sealing coatings used in turbo engines were prepared by plasma spray technology. The phases and the microstructures of the coatings were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion behaviors of these coatings were investigated with open-circuit potential (OCP) and salt spray corrosion test. The results showed that the NiCrAl/BN possess better corrosion resistance as compared with Ni/BN.

Corrosion of carbon steel in nanofluid containing 0.1 gpl of ZrO2nanoparticle at temperature from 25 to 55°C was investigated by using potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The open circuit potential measurements, cathodic and anodic polarization were used to characterize the corrosion behavior of carbon steel. Metallurgical techniques such as optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the alloys before and after corrosion testing. The microstructures of the as received carbon steel exhibited equaxed morphology. While corrosion specimens showed that microstructure of carbon steel alloys relatively unchanged after polarization testing. X ray diffraction examination of carbon steel before polarization represent γ phase and after polarization is still γ phase with minor Fe2O3. The open circuit potentials of carbon steel increase to positive displacement with increasing temperature nanofluids. The results of polarization technique show that corrosion currents increase and therefore corrosion rates become faster with the increase of nanofluids temperature.

Zn-Ni and Zn-Co monolayer and Zn-Ni/Zn-Co multilayer (from 2 to 128 layers) alloy coatings were formed on steel substrate by electrodeposition from acidic Zn-Ni bath and neutral Zn-Co bath. Samples were tested in salt chamber for corrosion resistance in neutral salt spray. Open circuit potential measurement and gravimetric study of corrosion were carried for samples immersed in the 5% NaCl solution.It was found that coatings of Zn-Ni surface layer occurred higher corrosion resistance then the coatings of Zn-Co surface layer. Sixteen-layer coating with Zn-Ni surface layer proved to be most effective in protecting the steel substrate. Zn-Ni monolayer showed the lowest corrosion potential, which affects the corrosion properties. Sample weight changes during exposure to a corrosive environment are related to digestion of the coating and the formation of corrosion products.
