Reading comprehension is a substantial skill in elementary school. If childrenhave the skill to read, facing other lesson would be easy. This study employs aquantitative descriptive method that aims at explaining numbers in words. Theresult showed that the average of students' reading skill after being exposed tographic organizer-based reading comprehension teaching materials indetermining the basic thoughts was of 63.75, and students' skill in explaininginformation was 71.04. At this stage, their skill was considered good enough, sothat an improvement to design teaching materials and trainings should befacilitated for the teachers.

Reading is an important language skill whose main purpose is comprehension. In the reading process, visible symbols must be perceived and interpreted in the brain. Once the reading skill has been acquired, it can become a tool for having access to information, analyzing and interpreting it. All of these depend on the reading comprehension skill. Thus, evaluation of reading comprehension is one of the subjects to which great importance is attached. Particularly the evaluation of the level of students’ reading comprehension is a subject of great interest for many researchers. In this regard, the current study aimed to investigate the relationship between the Turkish elementary school students’ reading comprehension and reading motivation. At the end of the study, it was found that there is a positive, medium and significant correlation between the students’ levels of reading comprehension determined with cloze tests made up of both narrative and informative texts and reading motivation. In addition, a positive, medium and significant correlation was found between the students’ levels of reading comprehension determined with open-ended questions made up of both narrative and informative texts and reading motivation. Increase in the students’ reading motivation affects their reading comprehension positively and significantly. Furthermore, reading motivation explains 12-13% of the total variance in their reading comprehension.

Reading is a skill that must be mastered by elementary school students because it can increase a person's reasoning for that a teacher must be a bridge in transferring knowledge by using teaching materials with DRTA strategies. Research method 4-D development with 4 stages define, design, develop, and disseminate. Teaching materials that have been validated by experts and practitioners with validation results of content eligibility with an average of 88.3 are very valid, linguistic aspects with an average of 91.6 are very valid, presentation aspects with an average of 90 are very valid, and aspe graphic of 87.5 is very valid.. After the validated teaching materials were tested in the class using a quasi-experimental method to obtain an increase in experimental class reading comprehension 18.75% higher than the increase in the control class with a 12.5% increase in class. To test whether there is a significant difference in the gain value tested by using normality and homogeneity tests, after the results are obtained, it is re-tested using the average difference test with the results of t_counts = 0.26 and t_table= 2.00 so that it can be concluded that the ability to read comprehension does not exist significant difference.

This research is a classroom action research using graphic organizer teaching materials in reading in the fourth grade of SDN 38 Pekanbaru with a total of 24 students. Before the implementation of learning in advance the implementation plan of learning was validated by several experts and practitioners with the results of the identity aspect validation obtained an average of 87 with a very decent category, and the assessment aspect obtained an average of 98 with a very decent feasible category. The results of the implementation of teacher activities in cycle I have obtained an average of 79% at meeting 1, meeting 2 obtained an average of 83%, meeting 3 obtained an average of 88% and meeting 4 obtained an average of 92%. The results of the research activities of meeting 1 student have obtained an average of 75%, meeting 2 was obtained an average of 79%, meeting 3 was obtained an average of 83%, and meeting 4 obtained an average of 88%. The results of the assessment of reading comprehension with the use of graphic organizer teaching materials from a base score of 42.50, the first cycle obtained an average of 71.88, the second cycle obtained an average of 76.88, with an increase from the base score to the first cycle obtained by 29, 38% while from the basic score to the second cycle obtained an average of 34.38%. The results of this study prove that the implementation of teaching materials to read the graphic organizer is able to improve reading comprehension skills.

ABSTRACT Reading comprehension is a competence that everyone has to possess. It can broaden human’s insight in that we will not be left behind as time goes so fast. One of the teachers’ efforts as to enhance the reading comprehension competence is to apply a learning model that is able to explore a lot of students’ potency. The learning model considered to be capable of developing the students’ creative-thinking is a generative model. Based on the result of data analysis, it is known that the process of reading-comprehension learning runs well in full activity of students. The students’ tendency to the learning of reading comprehension using such a model is positive in the means of 75.10%. The generative learning model succeeds in enhancing the students’ competence of reading comprehension. The means of score before the treatment is only 53.80%, whereas after the treatment it gets 72% in which the index gain is 0.41 and it is categorized into mediocre. There is difference of reading-comprehension competence between the use of generative learning model and conventional model. It is proven by t-test, indicating that t-observed is higher than t-table. Therefore, the generative learning model is effective and reasonable to use for the teachers in the improvement of stduents’ reading-comprehension competence.
