‘What Does Poland Want from Me?’ Male Hysteria in Andrzej Wajda’s War Trilogy

Elżbieta Ostrowska examines Andrzej Wajda’s War Trilogy. She admits that the films need to be located within the vernacular tradition of Romanticism responding to the national trauma, but they also may be located within a broader context of psychoanalysis and universal traumas of modernity. Not only does she suggest necessity of employing these two conceptual frameworks, but she also claims that there is a symbiotic relationship between these two albeit rarely if ever recognised. Using Slavoj Žižek’s concept of ‘hysterical doubt’ and a Polish scholar Michał Paweł Markowski’s discussion of melancholia and hysteria, Ostrowska identifies hysterical subject in Polish Romantic culture emphasizing the uncertainty inscribed in it. She claims that the protagonists of Wajda’s War Trilogy are another embodiments of hysterical male subjects. As hysteria speaks exclusively through the body, the chapter focuses on the haptic potential of the cinematic image as well as specific bodily performances. Ostrowska argues that these excessive bodily spectacles that largely fit clinical descriptions of hysterical symptoms are indeed an attempt to overcome the actual lack of bodily agency and, by extension, male subjectivity. Hysterical body responds to ambiguities and uncertainties regarding vernacular masculine subject.

Cognitive process and associated states such as wellbeing are embodied, in a process of phylogenetic and ontogenic interdependencies, encompassing an organism’s both internal and external environments. Diurnal mammals’ physiology has been enslaved by the day/night cycle, imposed to planet Earth from the cosmos. Mammals’ physiology is furthermore entangled to the micro-dynamics of small organisms, imposed onto the body through the development of a symbiotic relationship unfolding throughout ontogeny and phylogeny. Therefore, adequate scientific study of human behavior will include as many levels as possible: socio-cultural, psychological, microbiological, etc. The brain-gut-microbiota topic represents a fascinating opportunity to expand our knowledge about cognition, mental health, and life in general. It is important to frame this research topic from multiple perspectives including biological/medical sciences, public policy, architecture, urbanism, and psychology. Furthermore, recent philosophical and epistemological advances, under the 4E-cognition framework, will help the integration of evidence, providing new insights and novel hypotheses.

While the transculturalized diversity and inclusion (TD&I) model is a contemporaneous strategy for leadership and learning, it is the latest of the existing disability study models. This chapter reviews the development of the TD&I model from the leadership perspective to study arguments, experiences, and to investigate how this information apprises the construction and exercise of transcultural consciousness, expertise, know-how, traditions, determinations, happenstances, objectives, agreement, and learning. This exploration focuses on the implementation of the model and survey results as this transculturalized model is reasoned the appropriate tool to expose how different backgrounds can be utilized in achievement to blend variability, variation, and diversity into unity. Beginning with the initial conceptual frameworks, and the results of the data, this research details the TD&I model and how to implement it in today's environment of activating change and transformation. This information adds to the body of knowledge regarding disability, strategy, diversity, and inclusion for academics, practitioners, and learners.

Estimates of substrate oxidation obtained from appearance of 13C or 14C from tracers in breath must be corrected for retention of labeled carbon in the body. We aimed to determine the effect of a defined experimental diet and metabolic status on recovery of infused Na [13C]bicarbonate in breath. Six healthy male subjects consumed an experimental diet for 7 days before receiving a continuous infusion of formula without tracer on day 8 and received either an intragastric (ig) or intravenous (iv) infusion of Na [13C]bicarbonate on day 9 or 11 during a 4-h postabsorptive (PA), 4-h continuously fed period. A trend toward increasing PA breath enrichment during the first 7 diet days approached statistical significance (P = 0.051), whereas breath enrichments measured 3 h postbreakfast were consistently higher than PA values throughout and did not change over the 7-day period. Breath enrichments during a 4-h continuous ig infusion of formula without tracer on day 8 rose 2.0 +/- 0.5 atom percent excess (APE).10(-3) above base line (P less than 0.001, ANOVA). In the tracer studies, breath enrichments were similar for the ig and iv routes of tracer infusion. For the ig infusion the fraction of infused Na [13C]bicarbonate recovered in breath as 13CO2 was 0.74 +/- 0.02 for the PA period and 0.79 +/- 0.02 for the fed period. For the iv infusion the fraction recovered was 0.70 +/- 0.04 for the PA period and 0.82 +/- 0.03 for the fed period. Fractional recoveries were not significantly different for ig and iv routes of administration but were different for PA and fed periods (P less than 0.0001, 2-way ANOVA). The fractional recoveries for the fed period obtained here were similar to the value 0.81 reported in a number of other studies. Recovery of tracer in breath increased linearly with O2 uptake and CO2 production, suggesting that factors affecting respiratory gas exchange may alter recovery. We conclude that the primary factor determining label recovery is the immediate and recent nutritional status of the host.

Abstract Many alpheid shrimps live symbiotically on the body surface or inside the bodies of other invertebrates, while others use burrows made by other animals. The burrow symbiosis of alpheid shrimps is poorly studied in the context of ecology, probably because the cryptic infaunal nature of the relationship is hard to observe. The limited knowledge of the pattern of burrow use by alpheid shrimps leaves a gap in our understanding of their evolutionary history. We described and compared the behavior of Stenalpheops anacanthus  Miya, 1997 and Athanas japonicus  Kubo, 1936, two alpheid species living symbiotically in the burrows of the same host, Upogebia yokoyai  Makarov, 1938. We found that both alpheid species used U. yokoyai burrows in aquaria, but their burrow use patterns were quite different. The average time taken for S. anacanthus to enter the burrow for the first time was much shorter (1 min) than that of A. japonicus (13 min). Subsequently, S. anacanthus made longer use of the burrow (80% of the observation period) than A. japonicus (49%). The tail-first exit frequency, which may indicate a sudden expulsion from the burrow by the host, was more frequent in A. japonicus (25%) than in S. anacanthus (7%). Such differences could be attributed to the nature of the symbiotic relationship, obligate in S. anacanthus but facultative in A. japonicus. Because of the diversity of symbiotic lifestyles, there is considerable potential to study the ecology and evolutionary biology of burrow-symbiotic alpheids further.

The scientific literature suggests that barefoot activity may be beneficial. There is a current trend in recreational barefoot activity in children and adults, and barefoot running among athletes. Although the type of skin over most of the body (hairy skin) seems to be easily injured by painful abrading loads, little is known about protection provided by plantar sensory feedback against damage from excessive wear during barefoot locomotion. To evaluate this, we administered a volley of 35 painful abrading loads to glabrous and hairy skin sites over a 5-min period, and examined its effects for signs of cutaneous injury in a sample of 12 normally shod healthy male subjects. Compared with hairy skin of the thigh, plantar skin required approximately 600% greater abrading loads to reach pain threshold. Furthermore, painful stimulation produced visible redness and hypersensitivity in all subjects at the hairy skin site 24 hr after stimulation, whereas only 8.3% reported hypersensitivity and none showed erythema at the plantar area 1 day later. We found that plantar skin possesses a higher pain threshold to abrading stimuli than hairy skin. In fact, loading of the plantar area was limited to innocuous levels due to intolerable pain. We conclude that plantar skin is well protected through sensory feedback from abrasive injuries when barefoot. This information combined with previous reports suggests that risk of injury when normally shod individuals perform barefoot locomotion should be low.

To study glutamate and glutamine kinetics, 4-h unprimed intravenous infusions of L-[15N]glutamate, L-[2-15N]glutamine, and L-[5-15N]-glutamine were administered to healthy young adult male subjects in the postabsorptive state. Arterialized-venous blood samples were drawn and analyzed for glutamate and glutamine 15N enrichments. The fractional turnover rates of the tracer-miscible glutamate and glutamine pools were fast, 8.0 and 2.8% min-1, respectively. The glutamate tracer-miscible pool accounted for less than one-tenth the estimated free glutamate pool in the body. The plasma glutamate amino N, glutamine amino N and glutamine amide N rates of appearance were 83 +/- 22 (means +/- SD), 348 +/- 33, and 283 +/- 31 mumol X kg-1 X h-1, respectively. The glutamine amide N appearance rate was 20% slower than the amino N appearance rate, indicating that glutamine transaminase is an active pathway in human glutamine metabolism. From measurement of transfer of tracer 15N, we found that only 5% of the glutamine synthesized in cells and released into plasma was derived from intracellular glutamate that had mixed with plasma. These data demonstrate that intravenously administered tracers of glutamate or glutamine do not mix thoroughly with the intracellular pools, and their measured kinetics reflect transport rates through plasma rather than whole-body fluxes.

The symbiotic relationship between literature and history is most visible in the writer’s deployment of his or her art to document experiences of the past and their impacts on the feelings and well-being of his or her people in the periods represented in the work(s). This article explores the historical content and significance of Tanure Ojaide’s The Endless Song from a new historical perspective. Most studies on Ojaide’s poetry often focus on his critique of bad leadership and his denunciation of exploitation and pillaging of Nigeria’s Niger Delta region with little attention paid to his poems as history in verse form. This article therefore contributes to criticism on the interface between literature and history. This study further highlights significant motifs in Nigeria’s history in the periods documented in The Endless Song and analyses the traumatic impacts of the events on the well-being of Nigeria and her people. These are aimed at showing that Ojaide’s The Endless Song is more than an outcry against the plundering of the Niger Delta region; it represents the spatiotemporal record of Nigeria’s turbulent history.

We have investigated the body surface flow/mouth flow transfer function (magnitude ratio and phase difference) in seven healthy male subjects driven at the chest from 4 to 30 Hz. The measurements were performed with a specially designed plethysmograph and analyzer. The subjects were driven with a mechanical oscillator placed on the sternum. After differences in gas temperature and humidity were taken into account, the data were in agreement up to 15 Hz with a simple second-order model including an airway compartment, with a resistance and an inertance, and a shunt compliance representing alveolar gas. At larger frequencies, closer inspection revealed that a third-order model was optimal. We interpret these results as indicating a compartmentalization of gas compliance within the thorax, communicating via a resistive element. Airway inertance did not seem to be distributed.
