Revisiting the Business English Courses to Meet the Stakeholers’ Demand

In the international business communication, English has become a medium of communication. To respond to such a global challenge, it is vital to equip students with Business English courses to prepare them to be more competitive worldwide. Nevertheless, studying Business English is quite problematic to many non-native learners since they have to focus both on the subject matter and the language. The present study is conducted to investigate the perspectives of the students and alumni on the Business English courses at the Business Administration Department, State Polytechnic of Malang. A survey on the second year students and the alumni was conducted. The questionnaires were distributed to elicit their views on the courses, as well as their recommendations. The existing English syllabuses and materials were collected to be overviewed. The findings indicate most students are in favor of the course. Their motivation and interest in the course are good that they make some attempts to support their Business English skills acquisition. The business English competences, like: business presentation, business meeting, business socializing, negotiation, business correspondence, and knowledge, like global business issues are of their benefits to prepare them to work and develop their career in the future. The alumni claim they apply the Business English knowledge and skills in their workplace. However, the level of the application is different following their job position in the workplace. The students’ proposals for the course are that it should be presented in a more fascinating way and business communication skills are more emphasized. Besides, global business materials and vocabulary in business are to be more inserted. The alumni recommend providing more business communication practices and vocabulary enrichment. Showing the formal and informal English usage is also necessary. Besides, character building related to business needs to be inserted.  The Business English syllabuses and materials were in line with the students’ and alumni’s expectation. The content and materials have already covered business knowledge and skills as expected by the stakeholder.

English has been a language for international business. Thus, English instruction should be directed to teaching communication skills necessary for business. As a vocational institution, State Polytechnic of Malang is supposed to view its English instruction from the perspectives of the students and alumni. Thus, the present study is intended to investigate the students’ and alumni’s perspectives on the benefits of Business English as well as their recommendation for the course. The respondents of this study are students and alumni of Business Administration Department, State Polytechnic of Malang. To tap the data, questionnaires are deployed. The data, then, are analyzed employing descriptive statistics to obtain the most and least typical responses. Findings indicate that both students and alumni take the benefit of the course. They view this subject is to prepare for their career development in the workplace. Besides, it is beneficial for their communication at the office, particularly in foreign companies. Alumni claim that their business English knowledge and skills during their college time are applicable in their workplace.  The respondents mostly demand more practices on business communication skills and vocabulary teaching included in Business English courses.

As a part of dissertaion research entitled “Developing A Model Of Business English Teaching Material For Students Of Politeknik Negeri Padang”. This article tells about the needs of Business English in workplaces from the graduate students persperctive. The information gottten can be used as inputs is designing Business English curriculum which in based on Link and Match concept between the needs of workplaces and educational institutions. A survey was done by spreading online questionnaires by using Google drive to the graduates of accounting department, who work for some companies in Indonesia. By using descriptive analysis, finding of the research obtains an overview that four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) are very impportant in business communication. It menas that they must be taught in Business English class. Next, it is also obtained that grammar, vocabulary, pronounciation, and translation are also very important to be taughy. Besides, this study can determine some business topics that are needed for Business English class.

To commemorate the 21st century, a new learning model was designed in 2013 curriculum, in which there is a shift from teachers give knowledge to students become student must actively seek out knowledge from a variety of learning resources. In this case, the teacher acts as facilitators. Thus, language is a very central role, because the language should be in front of all other subjects. Curriculum 2013 imposed a thematic integrated learning which is no longer based subjects. Various subjects for primary schools (such as: Religion, Civics, Indonesian, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and so on) are integrated intoone book. The subject matter is not presented in textbook, but it presented in book thematics lesson, the themes are about nature, social life and culture. In this new curriculum, learning process is implemented by applying a scientific approach (observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and networking) that includes three aspects such as attitudes, knowledge, and skills. So, how is the role of Indonesian in an integrated thematic learning by applying scientific approaches in primary schools in 2013 curriculum? By appying the method, the object of this paper is to gain preview about the role of Indonesian in 2013 curriculum that uses integrated thematic learning by scientific approach in primary schools.AbstrakUntuk menyongsong abad ke-21, model pembelajaran baru dirancang dalam Kurikulum 2013, yang di dalamnya terdapat pergeseran dari siswa diberi tahu menjadi siswa harus aktif mencari tahu ilmu pengetahuan dari berbagai sumber belajar. Dalam hal ini, guru berperan sebagai fasilitator. Dengan demikian, peran bahasa menjadi sangat sentral, karena bahasa harus berada di depan semua mata pelajaran lain. Kurikulum 2013 memberlakukan pembelajaran tematik terpadu yang tidak lagi berbasis mata pelajaran. Berbagai mata pelajaran untuk sekolah dasar (seperti: Agama, PPKN, Bahasa Indonesia, Matematika, IPA, IPS, dan sebagainya) diintegrasi menjadi satu buku. Materi pelajaran tidak disajikan dalam buku mata pelajaran, tetapi dalam buku tema pelajaran, baik tema alam, sosial, maupun budaya. Proses pembelajaran dalam kurikulum baru ini diimplementasikan melalui pendekatan saintifik (mengamati, menanya, menalar, mencoba, dan mengomunikasikan) yang mencakup tiga aspek, yaitu sikap, pengetahuan, dan keterampilan. Lalu, bagaimana peran bahasa Indonesia dalam pembelajaran tematik terpadu melalui pendekatan saintifik di sekolah dasar pada Kurikulum 2013 ini? Melaluimetode deskriptif, yang menjadi tujuan penulisan ini adalah mendapatkan gambaran mengenai peran bahasa Indonesia dalam Kurikulum 2013 yang menggunakan pembelajaran tematik terpadu melalui pendekatan saintifik di sekolah dasar.

The article explores the basic professional communicative knowledge, skills that mechanical engineers must have; in this article we give their definitions in the process of fulfilling professional duties, give a description of the profession mechanical engineer considering business communication. The article defines a professional program as information about a complex of general and special professional knowledge and skills necessary for a specialist to ensure effective communication as a component of his professional activity. In the article we define the following basic criteria for the professional ability of a mechanical engineer: mastery of a sufficient supply of communicative skills and experience, knowledge of the basics of a communicative culture that facilitate communication and help to establish proper relationships for the sake of high one's achievements in a specific professional field.in their future professional activities, mechanical engineers must demonstrate the ability to negotiate, reach out to the audience, build relationships with colleagues on an ethical basis, resort to non-standard language forms, ensure cooperation in the group, as well as ability to avoid conflicts and respond promptly to the interlocutor’s comments in professional communicative situations, anticipate the development of the conversation and the interlocutor’s reaction, create and maintain a friendly communicative atmosphere for success in cooperation.

The present essay, reposing on phenomena of derivation and semantics, will attempt to establish a more objective basis for the syntax of the impersonals. As a matter of syntax, the subject is of vital interest for the living Germanic tongues, and with these the essay begins. It will continue with a discussion of the phenomena of the Latin impersonals, and seek, by the help of living English usage, to establish upon a correct psychological basis the definition and derivation of the least elusive impersonals of emotion in Sanskrit and Latin.

The paper presents the results of one part of empirical research conducted for the purpose of conceiving the proposal of educational standards for the subject Geography at the end of primary school education. The goal was to determine the extent to which the students were trained to orient themselves and use cartographic method in the process of using geographical map. Research comprised the representative sample of 919 students of the final grade in 159 Serbian primary schools. Achievement Test served for studying the levels of students' knowledge and skills in the field of Geographic Skills. Besides this, the questionnaire studied students' opinion on learning outcomes in this field, and by analyzing contingency tables, the correlation between students' success in geography at the end of the first term of the eighth grade and their opinion about learning outcomes in the afore-mentioned field was determined. The findings of this research indicate that students are not sufficiently trained to orient themselves in space and on geographical map, as well as to use geographical map in instruction. Besides, it was established that there is a correlation between students' success and their opinion on learning outcomes in the field of Geographic Skills.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight difficulties the students of Bachelor of commerce (B.Com) face in written communication. During the final year of B.com they study the subject of business communication focused on business correspondence. The major barrier for the students is their inability to use syntax correctly. For this purpose data were collected from 125 randomly selected students form institutes of commerce education in Bahawlapur using untimed grammaticality judgment test. This test was proposed by Rod Ellis (2005) and Erlam (2006) consisting of seventeen challenging grammatical structure. The result showed that majority of students were unable to use correctly the basic structure of English language syntax in their writing. In the posttest interviews they shared that they did not learn these basic structure of English ever in their academic career as they were forced to cram materials.
