As part of a multiphase study (Didiş et al., 2014; Didiş et al., 2016), this research focused on the effective issues on cognition, and it examined the role of metacognition in the construction of mental models. With the identification of students’ mental models of quantization of physical observables in the previous parts of the project, we considered metacognition theory to identify how knowledge about cognition influenced the construction of their mental models. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with students by considering their knowledge and experiences about learning quantum theory during the semester. Based on the determined metacognitive behaviors, students’ mental models were reinterpreted by considering the metacognitive theory. The qualitative analysis results indicated that (1) students presenting more metacognitive behaviors constructed more coherent and scientific knowledge structures than the others and (2)satisfaction with knowledge was a breaking point for students’ reorganization of their knowledge. These findings are important to indicate the influence of metacognition on the construction and revision of mental models about physics concepts. In teaching of science at university level, students’ metacognitive evaluations should be taken into consideration together with their conceptions forscientific understanding.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of knowledge transfer in the communication of environment, social, governance (ESG) factors between companies and institutional investors, when they attempt to reach a full appreciation and mutual understanding. Design/methodology/approach – Empirical data were gathered through in-depth semi-structured interviews with six European institutional investors. Archival material was used to triangulate the findings. Findings – Based on the interviews it was evident that ESG is only one consideration in the investment process and that there are several approaches toward integrating ESG. Furthermore, the investors viewed ESG within a financial framework suggesting that this financial framework is part of their vocational cultural professional mental models. Finally, the results indicate that investors attempt to reach a mutual understanding of ESG by carrying out an active dialogue with target companies. Practical implications – The study indicates that companies should discuss/approach? ESG issues from a financial perspective. The findings also suggest that companies should emphasize the role of dialogue when communicating with investors in order to develop a mutual understanding of the company's ESG performance. Finally, by proactively discussing ESG with investors, companies will not only play a role in developing the knowledge base of capital markets regarding ESG, but this will also offer an opportunity for companies to explicate their own communication agenda. Originality/value – The paper develops a framework for communicating ESG between companies and institutional investors. The framework depicts the diverging mental models of the two parties.

In this paper, I attempt to investigate whether online writing checkers, including tools looking at grammar, punctuation, spelling and composition, do in fact help potential ESL writers, and if so, to which extent, in what areas, to what effect and at what cost. The small-scale study involves 23 university level ESL students who compose various texts as part of their training. Data was collected using pre and post writing samples, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The analysis used a descriptive statistical method, Likert-scale and correlations and qualitative analysis for the three methods respectively. The results are inconclusive as students reported different opinions. It was found however that students who are frequent users of features such as MS Word Thesaurus and Online Corpora are more likely to incorporate online writing checkers and therefore found them more helpful. It was also found that regardless of their effect, students always welcomed tools available that can provide feedback to their compositions. The writing software used, AccurIT, also showed improvements in students’ ability to write correct collocations.

Republic of Indonesia is the largest archipelagic and Muslim majority country in the world comprising of various small and big islands. Almost 300 languages are spoken in the country, but Indonesians believe in ‘Benika Tungal Ika’ mean diversity is strength. Indonesian Islamic education system covets overall development of students’ personality including the religious, cognitive, physical, emotional, physical and scientific aspects. This paper aims to explore the perceptions of alumni about contribution of Sekola Islam, Pesantren and Pandok in nation building of Indonesia. Paper is based on qualitative analysis of data collected through semi structured interviews with alumni of Sekola Islam, Pesantrens and Pandok. The results showed that Pesantrens, Sekola Islam and Pandok network of Islamic Education Institutions is root of education system and has played a significant role in nation building of Indonesia. Islamic Education Institutions have contributed for the religious, societal, economic and technological development of Indonesia and produced renowned leaders in the field of politics, religion and education.

The leadership role of the man has significant impact on the wellbeing of the family and church, which, in turn, has a significant impact on society. This article encompasses an evaluation of the leadership role of the man in context of the family and church, with an analysis of qualitative research through structured interviews (naïve sketches) conducted with fifteen female participants. The structured interviews are presented in the form of selected verbatim responses to five questions related to the leadership role of the man in the mentioned contexts. It is imperative for men to study the Bible adequately and appreciate the authority of Scripture and what it says about their leadership role in the family and church. Having a sound biblical theology about the leadership role of the man in context of the family and church can potentially help him to lead his family and church toward a more biblical model of leadership in a post-pandemic era. The purpose of this article is to highlight the imperative leadership role of the man, where challenges may be identified, and practical solutions be recommended for equipping men to be effective leaders in the mentioned contexts. This article comes from a chapter in a larger study from a PhD dissertation: The leadership role of the man in context of the family and church: A Pastoral-Theological study.

The mental models students have after engaging in an activity designed to teach infrared (IR) spectroscopy without reliance on IR absorption tables, were characterized. Qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews, through open coding, allowed the classification of the mental models as Molecules as Dynamic (MAD), Bonds as Dynamic (BAD), Molecules as Static (MAS), External Energy (EE), and Internal Energy (IE). Assumptions students have about structure, dynamics, and spectra when solving IR spectra were identified and grouped as intuitive, valid, and spurious. A connection was found between participants with more sophisticated mental models and those who used multi-variate reasoning. Participants were also more likely to be successful when they compared spectra. The results of the analysis suggest IR spectroscopy should be taught through a conceptual lens to guide learning about the interaction of energy and matter.

Accurate pronunciation has a vital role in English language learning as it can help learners to avoid misunderstanding in communication. However, EFL learners in many contexts, especially at the University of Phan Thiet, still encounter many difficulties in pronouncing English correctly. Therefore, this study endeavors to explore English-majored students’ perceptions towards the role of pronunciation in English language learning and examine their pronunciation practicing strategies (PPS). It involved 155 English-majored students at the University of Phan Thiet who answered closed-ended questionnaires and 18 English-majored students who participated in semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that students strongly believed in the important role of pronunciation in English language learning; however, they sometimes employed PPS for their pronunciation improvement. Furthermore, the results showed that participants tended to use naturalistic practicing strategies and formal practicing strategies with sounds, but they overlooked strategies such as asking for help and cooperating with peers. Such findings could contribute further to the understanding of how students perceive the role of pronunciation and their PPS use in the research’s context and other similar ones. In recent history, different design approaches have been entering fields like management and strategy to improve product development and service delivery. Specifically, entrepreneurship has adopted a user-centric mindset in methodologies like the business canvas model and the value proposition canvas which increases the awareness of the users’ needs when developing solutions. What happens when a service design approach is used to understand the entrepreneurs’ experience through the creation of their startups? Recent literature suggests that entrepreneurial activity and success is conditioned by their local entrepreneurship ecosystem. This study investigates the Entrepreneurship Ecosystem of Medellín, Colombia - an ecosystem in constant growth but that lacks qualitative analysis. The sample consists of 12 entrepreneurs in early-stage phase. The data was gathered with two design research methods: Cultural Probes and Semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the information collected facilitated the development of 4 insights about the entrepreneurs and an experience map to visualise and interpret their journey to create a startup. The results of this study reflected the implications of the ecosystem, the explanation of the users’ perceptions and awareness and propose a set of ideas to the local government to improve the experience of undertaking a startup in Medellín.

Studies on knowledge creation are limited in general, and there is a particular shortage of research on the topic in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Given the importance of SMEs for the economy and the vital role of knowledge creation in innovation, this situation is unsatisfactory. Accordingly, the purpose of our study is to increase our understanding of how SMEs create new knowledge. Data are obtained through semi-structured interviews with ten managing directors of German SMEs operating in the building and construction industry. The findings demonstrate the influence of external knowledge sources on knowledge creation activities. Even though the managing directors take advantage of different external knowledge sources, they seem to put an emphasis on informed knowledge sources. The study´s findings advance the limited body of knowledge regarding knowledge creation in SMEs.
