Leaf rust of wheat caused by Puccinia triticina is one of the most important diseases in the Pakistan and cause both yield and quality reduction. To investigate the effect of leaf rust of wheat on morph-physiological processes and grain yield, a field experiment was conducted using different wheat lines and varieties. The morpho-physiological attributes of the infected plant leaves were badly affected by the infection of leaf rust of wheat. The experiment comprised two treatments, one was inoculated with leaf rust spores manually and Morocco as a spreader while other keeping as a control. The results showed that there was -42.92, -23.72, -23.01, and -11.42, % decrease in chlorophyll content, flag leaf area, specific flag leaf area and relative water content in leaf rust (diseased) plot respectively while 21.24, 160.16% increase in relative dry weight and relative membrane permeability in the leaf rust plot. The results also revealed that leaf rust of wheat also reduces the yield components like number of grains per spike, spike length and 1000 grain weight (-52.38, -43.37 and -45.50 respectively). Thus, it could be concluded that leaf rust of wheat affect the morph-physiological process of wheat plants and badly reduce the yield as well.

The investigation was carried out to evaluate the effect of different organic manures on turmeric with reference to vegetative growth, biomass production, rhizome yield and its attributes of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.). Turmeric showed better response to the application of organic manures. Plant with neem cake application had the taller plant (79.30 cm), maximum number of tillers per plant (5.40), leaf number (5.40), leaf area (44.09) leaf area index (0.429), fresh weight of halum ( 190.05g), fresh weight of root (49.13 g), fresh weight of rhizome per plant (256.21 g) and dry weight of halum (15.21g), dry weight of root (7.32 g), dry weight of rhizome per plant (40.35 g), total dry matter yield (6.85 t ha-1) than those received other types of manures. Moreover, yield attributes such as number of mother rhizomes per plant-1 (1.75), more number of primary rhizomes per plant-1 (5.19), secondary rhizomes per plant-1 (18.03) and tertiary rhizomes per plant (7.69) were also highly accelerated by neem cake application. Similarly, the same treatment expressed the best in terms of size of mother rhizome (7.69 cm), primary rhizome (21.86 cm) and secondary rhizomes (7.05 cm).All these parameters in cumulative contributed to  produce the highest estimated fresh rhizomes yield & cured rhizomes yield (29.48 t ha-1, 5.59 t ha-1 respectively). The highest curing percentage (20.28) was observed in T3 treatment having mustard cake@ 2.0 t/ha. Character association studies help in assessing the relationship among yield and its components to enhance the selection utility. In view of this, the present research was carried out for assessing correlation and path coefficients among 30 bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes using fifteen quantitative parameters. Correlation analysis demonstrated a noteworthy positive relationship of days to fifty per cent flowering, number of tillers/plant, flag leaf area, spike length, plant height, chlorophyll content, relative water content, number of grains/ ear, thousand-grain weight, days to maturity and harvest index, with grain yield per plant at both the phenotypic and genotypic level except canopy temperature which showed a significant negative relationship. Path coefficient analysis revealed that plant height, flag leaf area, relative water content and grain per ear had the maximum positive direct effect on grain yield. Hence, the present investigation can be helpful in executing a reliable selection of parental lines based on these above mentioned traits in addition to developing high-yielding varieties for further breeding programme.

Increasing human population places pressure on agriculture. To feed this population, two time increase in the current wheat production is needed. Today agriculture is becoming input intensive with more reliance on synthetic fertilizers and agrochemicals to fulfil the feed demand of the growing numbers. Use of synthetic fertilizer since last few years is impacting the soil quality. In this scenario, the use of beneficial endophytic microbes is an attractive strategy to overcome the use of synthetic products. To investigate the effect of consortium application of endophytic bacteria and fungus on plant growth, grain yield moisture status, a pot experiment was conducted in different wheat lines. It comprised four treatments like control, application of bacterial strain Bacillus sp. MN54, fungal strain Trichoderma sp. MN6, and their consortium (Bacillus sp. MN54 + Trichoderma sp. MN6). The effect of consortium application was more prominent and significantly different from the sole application of bacteria and fungus. The results showed that with a consortium application of endophytic bacteria and fungus, there was 28.6, 4.3, -6.3 and -3.7% increases in flag leaf area, chlorophyll content, relative membrane permeability and water content respectively. Consortia of endophytic microbes also resulted in the yield enhancement through the betterment of various yield attributes like number of spikelet’s, grains per spike and grain yield per plant (32.2, 25.8 and 30.8%, respectively). So, consortia of endophytic microbes can greatly promote the progress of plants in dry land agriculture and increase the yield in an environmentally sustainable way.

Growth and development of red rice (strawhull) and ‘Lemont’ and ‘Newbonnet’ rice were compared in 1987 and 1988 under noncompetitive field conditions at Stuttgart, AR. Growth and developmental differences were greater between red rice and rice than between rice cultivars. Compared to rice, red rice was taller, produced more culms m−2and aboveground dry weight, had higher leaf area indices, and had a greater flag leaf area. Also, it had lower leaf to stem ratios late in the season, had greater crop growth rate early in the season but less late in the season, and produced a lower grain weight than rice. Compared to Newbonnet, Lemont plants were shorter at 60 d after emergence or later, produced more culms m−2, had a greater leaf area index, and produced higher grain weight than Newbonnet. Also, Lemont and Newbonnet produced comparable leaf to stem ratios, crop growth rates, and flag leaf areas.

A new race of Puccinia triticina was collected from common wheat (Triticum aestivum) in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces during the annual rust survey in 2009. Six single-pustule isolates from a field collection, which were shown to be a new race in preliminary analyses, were inoculated onto seedlings of 16 Thatcher (Tc) near-isogenic differential lines (1) and other tester lines with known Lr genes. Standard procedures for inoculation, incubation, and rust evaluation were followed (4) and all infection studies were repeated. The low infection type of Lr18 was confirmed at 18°C. All six isolates were avirulent (infection types [ITs] 0; to 2) to Lr1, 2a, 2c, 9, 11, 16, 18, and 24 and virulent (ITs 3 to 4) to Lr3, 3ka, 10, 14a, 17, 26, 30, B, and Tc (control). The new race, named 3SA145 according to the ARC-Small Grain Institute notation, corresponds to race CCPS in the North American system (1). On the basis of seedling ITs of the extended Lr gene set, 3SA145 was avirulent (ITs 0; to 22+) to Lr2b, 19, 21, 23, 25, 28, 29, 32, 36 (E84081), 38, 45, 47 (KS90H450), 50 (KS96WGRC36), 51 (R05), and 52 and virulent to Lr3bg, 15, 20 (Thew), 27+31 (Gatcher), and 33. Lines containing the adult plant resistance (APR) genes Lr12 (RL6011, IT 3++), Lr13 (CT263, IT 3), Lr22b (Tc, IT 4), and Lr37 (RL6081, IT 3) were susceptible in the adult stage to 3SA145, whereas lines with the APR genes Lr22a (RL6044, IT ;1), Lr34 (RL6058, IT Z1), and Lr35 (RL6082, IT ;1) were resistant in controlled infection studies in a greenhouse. A control, the common race (3SA133), was virulent only on Tc adult plants. In seedlings, 3SA133 was avirulent to Lr15, 17, 26, and 27+31, but unlike 3SA145, it was virulent to Lr1, 2c, 11, 18, 24, and 28. Races 3SA133 and 3SA145 did not differ in their virulence to the remaining seedling genes. Virulence to Lr37 has been reported in several countries, including Australia, Canada, Uruguay, and the United States (1,2). Prior to the detection of 3SA145, adult plants of RL6081 were resistant to all wheat leaf rust races in South Africa. In 2009, however, RL6081 showed severity levels of up to 30S at certain Western Cape trap plot sites. Of 124 South African bread wheat cultivars and advanced breeding lines tested at the seedling stage, 3SA145 was virulent to 48, whereas 3SA133 was virulent to 36 entries. A further six entries were heterogeneous in their reaction to 3SA145. In adult plant infection studies of 48 South African spring wheats in a greenhouse, 19 were susceptible (flag leaf IT ≥3) and 22 were resistant to 3SA145. Seven entries showed a Z3 flag leaf IT indicating adult plant resistance. According to a simple sequence repeat (SSR) study using 17 primer-pair combinations described by Szabo and Kolmer (3), 3SA145 showed 30% homology with the dominant South African races. Although virulence to Lr12 and Lr13 has been known in different leaf rust races in South Africa, to our knowledge, this is the first report of combined virulence to Lr12, 13, and 37. Shading treatments with a high- and a low-yielding line of wheat indicated that the ear and flag leaf contributed the major portion of grain dry weight. Correlation coefficients calculated between flag-leaf area and grain yield, and ear area and grain yield, from tillers within seven lines of wheat ranged from + 0.54 to + 0.90. The combination of a large flag leaf plus a large ear area showed promise as an index for selecting higher yielding individuals from a mixture of genotypes.

Bananas (cv. Williams) were grown for 12 weeks in sunlit growth chambers at day/night temperatures of 17/10, 21/14, 25/18, 29/22, 33/26 or 37/30°C. Humidity was not controlled. At 17/10°C, the plants showed chilling injury and heat injury occurred at 37/30°C. Total plant dry weight was greatest at 25/18°C while leaf area was greatest at 33/26°C. At high temperatures proportionately less dry matter was present in the roots and corm compared with plants at 25/18°C. High temperatures produced more horizontal leaves but, to compensate for this, the laminae folded more readily. Lamina folding was closely associated with relative water content of the laminae, except under cool conditions where laminae folded despite high (97-99%) leaf relative water contents. Unit leaf rate (increase in whole plant dry weight per unit leaf area per unit time) was greatest at 21/14°C (5.8 g m-2 day-1) and least at 37/30°C (1.7 g m-2 day-1.) and had a strong negative association with whole-plant leaf resistance. Leaf relative water content was more closely associated with vapour pressure deficit than temperature and even at 37/30°C was high at 94%.

Populations of Puccinia triticina , one of the casual agents of wheat leaf rust disease, in the pacific (British Columbia and Alberta), prairie (Manitoba and Saskatchewan), and eastern regions (Quebec and Ontario) of Canada from 1997 to 2007 were analyzed for virulence and genetic diversity by revealing expressed sequence tag derived simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) polymorphisms. Since 1997, a significant shift in the virulence of P. triticina occurred across Canada. The diversity of P. triticina virulence phenotypes in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, as measured by Shannon and Simpson indexes, decreased due to the directional selection toward predominant virulence phenotypes, whereas it remained relatively constant in Quebec and Ontario. The clustering of P. triticina virulence phenotypes from 1997 to 2007 was similar to that found in previous years, and was correlated with virulence to leaf rust resistance genes Lr2a, Lr2c, and Lr17a. Distinct EST-SSR profiles were found in different groups of P. triticina virulence phenotypes based on virulence to Lr2a, Lr2c, and Lr17a. In addition, the population of P. triticina in Manitoba and Saskatchewan was different from that in Quebec and Ontario from 1997 to 2007, based on both virulence characteristics and EST-SSR genotypes.
