Aim: To assess the errors made during preclinical tooth preparation by the undergraduate students of Meenakshi Ammal Dental College and Hospital, Chennai. Objectives: To understand the reason, nature and frequency of the errors occurring during tooth preparation done by undergraduate dental students during their preclinical practice. Materials and Methods: A total of hundred samples were collected from the undergraduate students. All the samples were upper right central incisors (11) typodont teeth, prepared to receive an All-ceramic crown. All the samples were prepared by mounting the typodont (NISSIN Typodont Jaw Model) on a phantom head simulator. All the preparations were made as freehand preparations. The following aspects of the preparation were evaluated: 1. Facial and palatal reduction 2. Occlusal clearance 3. Finish line width The evaluation of all the three aspects was done by studying a cross-section of an impression made on the prepared tooth. The impressions were made using a hard splint, which was fabricated on the typodont jaw model, prior to tooth preparation, as an impression tray. The impression material used was Light body(Zhermack Elite HD – Light normal set) impression material Results: The measurements and values obtained were subjected to statistical analysis to obtain the final result. Regarding the amount of prepared tooth surface, the frequency of errors encountered was more with regard to palatal reduction. Regarding the width of the finish line, Labial aspect of the finish line was most commonly under prepared. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, the main recommendation is to increase the pre-clinical practice time to emphasise more on the clinical expertise and the importance of proper operator positioning during tooth preparation. Background: Dual-arch impression technique allows the simultaneous recording of  tooth preparation, opposing anatomic tooth and maxillomandibular relationship. The  accuracy of reproduction of this easy and quick technique, however, has not been  studied in detail in past. Objective: To compare the accuracy of the impressions  made by using the same impression material in dual arch plastic trays, dual-arch  metal trays and acrylic resin custom trays. Methods: The dies obtained from the  addition silicone impressions made in dual-arch plastic trays, dual-arch metal trays  and full arch acrylic resin custom trays were compared for the dimensional accuracy  with the prepared typodont tooth as a control. Student’s paired t-test and unpaired  t-test were used for the data analyses using the Statistical Package for Social Studies  (SPSS) version 11.5. Results: The dies obtained from all the impression combinations  showed increased dimension (acrylic resin custom trays 9.4 mm±0.048, dual-arch  plastic trays 9.5 mm±0.035, dual-arch metal trays 9.41 mm±0.017) as compared to  the dimension of control (9.39 mm±0.007). Conclusion: All the tray-impression  material combinations showed variable accuracies. Full arch acrylic resin trays  resulted in greatest accuracy whereas dual-arch plastic trays the least accuracy.Health Renaissance 2014;12(2):  pp: 111-117

Purpose: Cavity and tooth preparation are essential curriculum components in dental education for undergraduate students, and faculty staff determine whether the standard of the work is acceptable. However, evaluators are inevitably subject to variability and bias, so quantification of the evaluation is desirable. Therefore, various digital devices have been developed to quantify evaluations, such as SURFLACER, Simodont, and DentSim. In this study, we aimed to investigate the use of evaluation software and to compare human evaluation with software evaluation using a new digital dental education device with a realtime evaluation function. Material and Method: Dental students prepared a full metal crown on an artificial mandibular left first molar, which was evaluated by the software and a human evaluator (a dentist). Results: The results showed that the software evaluation was more suitable with eight cross-sections than with four crosssections. The dentist evaluated the same teeth according to a set of evaluation criteria, but there were no statistically significant differences in any of the evaluation items. Finally, multivariate analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between the software evaluation using eight cross-sections and the human evaluator using dummy variables, and it revealed that the margin form evaluation by the dentist was a significant explanatory variable for the score by the software. Conclusion: This preliminary study is the first to demonstrate that the new digital dental education device has considerable potential as a digital educational tool.

ABSTRACTObjectives: This in-vitro study investigated the marginal fit of two all-ceramic copings with 2 finish line designsMethods: Forty machined stainless steel molar die models with two different margin designs (chamfer and rounded shoulder) were prepared. A total of 40 standardized copings were fabricated and divided into 4 groups (n=10 for each finish line-coping material). Coping materials tested were IPS e.max Press and Zirkonzahn; luting agent was Variolink II. Marginal fit was evaluated after cementation with a stereomicroscope (Leica MZ16). Two-way analysis of variance and Tukey-HSD test were performed to assess the influence of each finish line design and ceramic type on the marginal fit of 2 all-ceramic copings (α =.05) Results: Two-way analysis of variance revealed no statistically significant differences for marginal fit relative to finish lines (P=.362) and ceramic types (P=.065)Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, both types of all-ceramic copings demonstrated that the mean marginal fit was considered acceptable for clinical application (≤120 μm). AbstractIntroduction: The total convergence of the axial walls is the angle made between the opposing axial walls of an abutment. The lower the taper value, the better the retention of the crowns is. Obtaining a proper convergence of the axial wall is a challenge for dental practitioners due to limited access and low visibility, but it also greatly depends on the clinician’s practical skills.This study aims to compare the total convergence of axial walls obtained after tooth preparation done by different experience practitioners in various positions of the patient and different working time (different days of the week, various parts of the day).Materials and methods: To perform this study, 40 acrylate model teeth have been prepared by two last year dental students and two prosthetists. All of them performed two teeth preparations per day in every working day of a week. All the prepared teeth have been photographed, and digitally measured.Results: The extremely statistically significant difference was found in the two beginners’ case, the values of the second beginner being much higher, as in the two experienced operators, where the values are higher for the second prosthetist.Conclusion: The total convergence of the axial wall did not depend on the operators’ experience or education level.

Aims: This is an vitro study compares and evaluates the effect of magnification tools on frequency and extent of iatrogenic damage to approximal tooth surface during conservative Class II cavity preparations. Methods and Material: 30 Typodont teeth were divided into 3 groups 10 typodont teeth in each group and were mounted on Phantom head. Teeth were prepared for class II (MO) cavity on 36 with conservative design using airotor with naked eye, loupes and microscope and iatrogenic damage was assessed on tooth no 35. Assessment of iatrogenic damage of all the groups was done by profilometer test. Statistical analysis used:Statistical analysis was done using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Post-hoc pair-wise comparisons were done using Dunnetts test. Results: Results revealed that tooth preparation was better under microscopes and loupes with statistical significant difference for samples with loupes and microscope on comparison with naked eye. Study also expressed the difficulty faced during tooth preparation with microscope and loupes for the first time. Conclusions: Magnifying tools helps in better vision and less iatrogenic damage while preparing the tooth for restoration.

Immediate dentin sealing (IDS) is an advantageous approach for realizing adhesive restorations, but it interferes with the polymerization of impression material due to the oxygen-inhibition layer (OIL), which leaves residues of impression material on the teeth. The aim of this study is to identify a clinical surface cleaning protocol after IDS in order to achieve defect-free impressions. Sixty extracted human teeth were cut to expose fresh dentin and the IDS protocol was performed. Samples were divided into six groups where different surface cleaning protocols were made before taking impressions: G1S and G1P groups, IDS and silicone (S) or polyether (P) impressions; G2S and G2P, treatment with prophy paste and impressions; G3S and G3P, final cleaning phase with surfactant agent and impressions. Teeth were evaluated with a scanning electron microscope to identify the areas (expressed in mm2) where residual impression material was present. The results demonstrate a reduction of residues in the G2 groups and the total disappearance in G3 groups with statistically significant differences between them. Superficial cleaning protocols with the prophy paste and surfactant agent lead to the elimination of the interaction with impression materials and OIL. These results suggest a safe clinical protocol for obtaining defect-free impressions after IDS.

Enormous successes have been obtained against the control of major epidemic diseases, such as SARS, MERS, Ebola, Swine Flu in the past. Dynamic interplay of biological, socio-cultural and ecological factors, together with novel aspects of human-animal interphase, pose additional challenges with respect to the emergence of infectious diseases. The important challenges faced in the control and prevention of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases range from understanding the impact of factors that are necessary for the emergence, to development of strengthened surveillance systems that can mitigate human suffering and death. The aim of the current study is to assess the awareness of symptomatic differences between viral diseases like COVID-19, SARS, Swine flu and common cold among dental students that support the prevention of emergence or re-emergence. Cross-sectional type of study conducted among the undergraduate students comprising 100 Subjects. A questionnaire comprising 15 questions in total were framed, and responses were collected in Google forms in SPSS Software statistical analysis. The study has concluded that dental students have an awareness of the symptomatic differences between infectious viral disease. The study concluded that the awareness of symptomatic differences between viral diseases like COVID-19, SARS, Swine flu, Common cold is good among the dental students who would pave the way for early diagnosis and avoid spreading of such diseases. A further awareness can be created by regular webinars, seminars and brainstorming sessions among these healthcare professionals.

Because there is no consensus in the literature about the need for a splint between copings, the aim of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the accuracy of 2 impression techniques for implant-supported prostheses. A master cast was fabricated with four parallel implant abutment analogs and a passive framework. Two groups with 5 casts each were formed: Group 1 (squared impression copings with no splint: S) and Group 2 (splinted squared impression copings, using metal drill burs and Pattern resin: SS). The impression material used was polyvinyl siloxane with open trays for standard preparation of the casts. For each cast, the framework was positioned, and a titanium screw was tightened with 10 N·cm torque in analog A, after which measurements of the abutment-framework interface gaps were performed at analogs C and D. This process was repeated for analog D. These measurements were analyzed using software. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a confidence interval of 95% was used to analyze the data. Significant differences were detected between S and SS in relation to the master cast (P ≤ 0.05). The median values of the abutment-framework interface gaps were as follows: master cast: 39.64 μm; squared impression copings with no splint: 205.86 μm; splinted squared impression copings: 99.19 μm. Under the limitations of this study, the technique presented for Group 2 produces better results compared with the technique used for Group 1.
