This study investigates the dynamic trading network structure of the international crude oil and gas market from year 2012 to 2017. We employed the dynamical similarity analysis at different time scales by inducing a multiscale embedding for dimensionality reduction. This analysis quantifies the effect of a global event on the dependencies and correlation stability at both the country and world level, which covers the top 53 countries. The response of China’s trading structure toward events after the unexpected 2014 price drop is compared with other major traders. China, as the world’s largest importing country, lacks strong stability under global events and could be greatly affected by a supply shortage, especially in the gas market. The trend of multi-polarization on the market share gives a chance for China to construct closer relationships with more stable exporters and join in the trade loop of major countries to improve its position in the energy trading networks. The hidden features of trade correlation may provide a deeper understanding of the robustness of relationship and risk resistance.

Kazakhstan's postcommunist transition is characterized by gradual changes under the conditions of a limited democracy. These changes have embraced extensive price and trade liberalization, and resolutely promoted privatization and the building of market institutions, although structural reforms and the struggle against corruption have made little progress. The country's financial independence was established with the introduction of the tenge in 1993. Transformational recession reached its maximum in 1995, since when only the 1998 Asian and Russian crises have interrupted continuous growth. However, the Kazakh economy is very sensitive to fluctuations in world energy and mineral prices, as the extractive industries, primarily oil and gas, have a crucial role in its development.

Abstract To meet the current oil and gas market challenges, there is an industry need to optimize cost by safely drilling longer horizontal wells to maximize well productivity. Drilling challenges include the highly deviated trajectory that starts from the surface sections and wellhead, the high DogLeg Sevirity (DLS) profile with collision risks, and the thin complex geological structures, especially in new unconventional fields where numerous geological and geomechanical uncertainties are present. To mitigate for those challenges, reviewing the existing drilling techniques and technologies is necessary. To compete in the current Hi-Tech and Automation era, the main challenges for directional drilling service providers are to reduce well time, place wells accurately, and improve reliability, reducing repair and maintenance costs and helping the customer reduce time and costs for the overall project. Offset wells analysis and risk assessments allowed identifying the main challenges and problems during directional drilling phases, which were highlighted and summarized. As a proposed solution, the new generation of intelligent fully rotating high dogleg push-the-bit rotary steerable system has been implemented in the UAE onshore oil and gas fields to improve the directional drilling control and the performance. This implementation reduced the Non-Productive time (NPT) related to the human errors as the fully automation capabilities were being utilized. The new rotary steerable system has the highest mechanical specs in the market including self-diagnosis and self-prognosis through digital electronics and sophisticated algorithms that monitor equipment health in real-time and allow for managing the tool remotely. As a result, the new intelligent RSS was implemented in all possible complex wellbore conditions, such as wells with high DLS profile, drilling vertical, curve, and lateral sections in a single trip with high mud weight and high solid contents. Automation cruise control gave the opportunity to eliminate any well profile issues and maintain the aggressive drilling parameters. Using the Precise Near-bit Inclination and Azimuth and the At-Bit Gamma real-time data and high-frequency tool face measurements in the landing intervals where required for precise positional control to enable entering the reservoir in the correct location and with the correct attitude helping the customer's Geology and Geophysics department to place wells accurately while maintaining a high on bottom ROP.

This chapter investigates the concept of ‘energy security’, understood as the ‘uninterrupted availability of energy resources at an affordable price’. Importantly, according to this definition, the ‘availability’ of energy resources is measured against existing energy demand, and threats to energy security are therefore threats to the supply of enough energy to meet existing energy demand. Energy supply depends upon both domestic and international factors which are so interconnected that it is difficult to distinguish where one starts and the other ends. What is clear, however, is that international law plays a fundamental role in addressing many threats to energy security. The chapter looks at existing threats to energy security and the international legal frameworks that have been established in response. The challenges to energy security include an exponential increase in world energy demand, shortages of national oil and gas deposits, the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuel production in order to counteract climate change, as well as risks of geopolitical instability. The chapter then focuses on the mechanisms aimed to ensure that the flow of energy remains uninterrupted and at an affordable price, as well as on those mechanisms aimed at increasing access to energy resources.

The downhole oil and gas market is continually pushing for higher reliability at higher temperatures. Satisfying this need requires continuous improvement, driven by failure analysis of both internal testing and field returns. This paper discusses recent lessons learned from on-going tests. Results of unpowered circuit assembly tests are reviewed. Also, a detailed analysis of separate powered life testing is presented. The internal testing results are further discussed in the context of field return data.

This article discusses the economic benefits of uranium mining, as well as its environmental and health impacts. Sustainable development includes several aspects: energy, water, the environment, food and the economy, and ensuring each of these aspects is a serious problem. Energy is at the center of other aspects of sustainability, as it has a direct relationship with water, food, and the environment. Uranium is Kazakhstan’s top priority in the global energy market. In the world, there are different opinions on the development of uranium production, increasing the value of atomic energy. Apparently, this should be preceded by a crisis in the field of oil and gas production in recent years, in connection with which the world energy market should have a diversified course depending on various energy sources. Kazakhstan is a country rich in uranium. In addition, over the years of independence, we have increased production almost four times and maintain leadership in the world. Therefore, uranium production is the most important advantage of our global energy space today.

In the conditions of price reduction in the world energy market, the issue of determining the priorities of the economic development of hydrocarbons in the Arctic Region of the Russian Federation (RF) becomes highly relevant. The article is aimed at developing an optimal model for the spatial organization of energy resources in the Arctic Region. The expert elicitation procedure was used to determine the efficiency indicators for the economic development of the oil-and-gas-bearing areas in the Arctic Region and clusterization of these areas was carried out in terms of economic efficiency. Based on the factor analysis, the degree of influence of efficiency indicators on the economic development of the oil and gas bearing areas of the region was determined and, an integrated performance indicator of economic development for oil-and-gas-bearing areas for each cluster was calculated with regard to the factor loadings. A 3-D model was developed for the organization of economic development of oil and gas in the Arctic Region. The 3-D model became the basis for determining the priorities for territorial exploration, development and production of hydrocarbons in terms of their economic efficiency, taking into account the trends in the development of the world energy market and break-even fields. A set of recommendations was developed to improve the efficiency of the spatial organization of economic development of oil and gas in the Arctic Region. The implementation of the proposed measures can contribute to the development of the oil and gas industry in the region, its socio-economic development and the long-term sustainability of Russia's energy security.


Subject Proposed reforms in the oil and gas sector. Significance In the face of strong resource nationalism, President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's government faces strong pressure to improve the balance between public control and private participation in the oil and gas sector. To that end, the government proposes to amend the 2001 oil and gas law. Its draft amendment proposes, most notably, that state enterprises should control all production operations, while private investors provide technology and capital. The government is also considering revisions to the upstream regime, which is currently based on production-sharing contracts (PSCs). These changes require parliamentary approval. Impacts Private firms, especially foreign ones, are likely to delay fresh investment in energy assets, given the oil and gas market glut. Indonesia's vast natural resource endowment will attract private interest, but regulatory uncertainty will be an abiding problem. Transparency in the extractive sector will continue to rise at the national level, but local level reforms will be slow.
