Populus spp. are among the most economically important species worldwide. These trees are used not only for wood and fiber production, but also in the rehabilitation of degraded lands. Since they are clonally propagated, the ability of stem cuttings to form adventitious roots is a critical point for plant establishment and survival in the field, and consequently for the forest industry. Adventitious rooting in different Populus clones has been an agronomic trait targeted in breeding programs for many years, and many factors have been identified that affect this quantitative trait. A huge variation in the rooting capacity has been observed among the species in the Populus genus, and the responses to some of the factors affecting this trait have been shown to be genotype-dependent. This review analyses similarities and differences between results obtained from studies examining the role of internal and external factors affecting rooting of Populus species cuttings. Since rooting is the most important requirement for stand establishment in clonally propagated species, understanding the physiological and genetic mechanisms that promote this trait is essential for successful commercial deployment.

Musical talent development and the factors that influence it—such as family or peers—have been widely researched, especially in a Western setting. Despite the growing body of research in non-Western cultures and regions, there is still a lack of research comparing the factors and perceptions of musical talent development between Western and Asian settings. This interview study compared Swiss and Chinese music students’ ( N = 19) musical talent development and the factors influencing musical talent during childhood and adolescence, their professional aims, and their perception of internal and external factors affecting talent development. The students had similar opinions regarding the role of their teachers, the roles of internal and external factors in talent development, and their career goals. However, the students from China and Switzerland differed in their experiences of making and discussing music with peers, in the difficulties experienced during their music education, and in their relationship with their families. The results are a starting point for further comparative research on the perception and development of musical talent, and offer material for a mutual understanding of music students’ backgrounds in countries with differing music education traditions.

It acts as an integral part of people’s worldview, their life orientations, values and priorities. In Russia, the dynamics of the ongoing changes in the political and legal sphere is largely determined by the rethinking of the events of the recent past and the attempt by various forces of influence to comprehend the present adequately. Such close attention to the phenomenon of legal awareness is due to many changes taking place in the country and society. The consciousness of people in Russia is multipolar. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce notions for increasing the strategic position of the HR function by outlining the influence that macro-economic trends play on the role of the function and the success of its initiatives. The main focus is on how HR can over time change with economic cycles to add tangible value and drive strategic conversations. Design/methodology/approach This argument is split into three sections: the importance of strategic considerations for change, macro-economic trends and HR, and HR’s increased input to business strategy. It looks at the work of key theorists in change management, analyzes the history of HR and develops these arguments into conclusions about how to improve HR’s strategic role. Findings Key theories of change management demonstrate that strategy is critical to the success of change projects. This means encompassing both internal and external factors affecting a business. By examining the historical development of HR it is clear to see that macro-economic trends are a significant external factor that is not often investigated by HR. If HR can harness this information, they will be able to implement proactive initiatives and drive strategic conversations. Originality/value The notions outlined in this paper identify a significant factor for the success of HR that is not often investigated by the function, allowing HR to implement more effective initiatives at optimal times.
