Physical Education has been described as a subject with unique characteristics that can contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals. However, an analysis of PE teachers’ (PETs) sustainability consciousness has not yet been conducted. For this purpose, a total of 203 PETs completed the validated SCQ-S instrument to measure the three dimensions of sustainable development in three components of consciousness (attitudes, knowledge and behaviours). The results obtained show that the PETs have a high consciousness for sustainable development (SD), except for attitudes within the economic dimension. Sex has been identified as a variable that determines awareness in sustainability with significantly higher scores for women in all the variables evaluated, except for knowledge and behaviour in the social dimension. These findings provide new knowledge within the Physical Education and SD paradigm, serving as a link for future research that aims to harness the benefits of Physical Education for the sustainability of the planet.

The United Nations (UN) considers sports as an important enabler of sustainable development. The popular and fast-growing Participatory Sports Event (PSE) sector can play an important role in this regard, however, research that measures and reports sustainability in PSEs is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to construct and validate a research instrument based on the UN’s sustainable development goals, and to examine sustainability in PSEs. To this end, an online survey was administered among a representative sample of 303 PSE organisers, located in Flanders, Belgium. A confirmatory factor analysis affirmed the social, economic and environmental dimensions of the instrument and provided evidence for its validity and reliability. The results reveal significant discrepancies between the three dimensions, with a noticeable lower score for environmental sustainability compared to social and economic sustainability. Furthermore, challenges are highlighted in the field of the civil society sector and in walking sports events. The findings also indicate that large-sized events are more likely to be sustainable. The current study can act as a foundation for future research on sustainability in PSEs and can assist PSE organisers and policymakers to increase the sustainability-related performance of the sector.

AbstractThe monitoring report on progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a global context involves a large number of actors as it represents probably the biggest change that our society is implementing. Actions at all levels, from local, regional and national to the aggregation of multiple countries (e.g. EU 27) are needed to achieve a sustainable future. This work focuses on a national perspective (Italy) where multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is used to measure current performance. A sustainability score for each region is calculated from a set of 175 indicators contained in all 17 SDGs. Additionally, sustainability scores are disaggregated along the three pillars – social (1–5, 10, 16, and 17), environmental (6, 13–15) and economic (7–9, 11, and 12). The results highlight the positive performance of northern regions and, in particular, of Trentino Alto Adige, which ranks first in the two considered scenarios. In addition, the relevance of territorial specificities emerges for which the analysis of individual SDGs shows different leading regions. It is noteworthy to highlight the performance of the environmental sub-group of SDGs in southern regions, in contrast to the social and economic sub-groups. Evidently, policy actions are needed to reduce the long-lasting North/South divide—yet the highlighted heterogeneous sustainability performance along the three dimensions calls for well targeted policy measures necessary to regain competitiveness at a European and global level, without compromising with environmental sustainability.

In Brazil, and in many other countries, the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) has been an innovative alternative for job and income generation, and a solution to cope with social and labor inclusion, in the last two decades. It can also be considered a new, more humane and inclusive model of development. This fact contributes to improving the quality of life, both for people and their communities, especially those with social and economic disadvantages. This conclusion led the United Nations to recognize the SSE as one of the auxiliary contributions to fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is because the SDGs integrate and merge the three dimensions of sustainable territorial development: economic, social and environmental. However, at present, we need conclusive quantitative and qualitative studies and methodologies to be able to “quantify” the effective contributions of the SSE to the SDGs. Thus, this article aims to use a real and innovative experience of municipal SSE, carried out in an area of high socioeconomic vulnerability (Monte Alegre Land Reform Settlement), in the Brazilian municipality of Araraquara (SP), to explain its effective contributions to achieving certain SDGs. With this study, which is still being carried out, we also intend to propose a set of indicators for SDGs 1, 2, 5, 11 and 12, which can be applied in the future, as well as to other SSE experiments.   En el año 2015 la ONU propuso 17 objetivos comunes que debían lograrse en menos de dos décadas. Estos son conocidos como los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) y se enmarcan en una estrategia global denominada Agenda 2030. La educación ha sido propuesta como un eje fundamental para el logro de los ODS, siendo todos los componentes del sistema educativo esenciales para contribuir a un mundo más sostenible a nivel económico, social y medioambiental. Concretamente, la Educación Física ha sido descrita como una materia que posee unas características importantes para contribuir al logro de los ODS; sin embargo, en la literatura previa aún no existen investigaciones que evalúen las intervenciones de los docentes de Educación Física (DEF) en sostenibilidad. Para indagar en este ámbito, el presente estudio tiene como objetivo explorar el conocimiento de los DEF sobre los ODS. Para ello, se realiza un estudio cualitativo-exploratorio basado en la entrevista. Doce DEF de Secundaria (seis mujeres) respondieron a ocho preguntas agrupadas en tres dimensiones. La noción del concepto de sostenibilidad, el análisis de las conductas sostenibles realizadas y las consideraciones sobre el valor que tiene la Educación Física para poder contribuir a la adquisición de los ODS. Los resultados mostraron que los DEF conciben la sostenibilidad sobre todo como un problema medioambiental, dejando de lado el aspecto económico y social. Además, mayoritariamente, confirman no realizar ningún tipo de conducta sostenible en clase, limitándose a impartir los contenidos de la materia. Finalmente, señalan al ODS 3 “Salud y bienestar” como el más relacionado con la Educación Física, seguido, de lejos, por los ODS 5 “Igualdad de género” ODS 16 “Paz y justicia social”. Estos resultados permitirán establecer futuras intervenciones e investigaciones destinadas a la mejora de actuaciones docente en el marco de la Educación Física.  Abstract. UN set 17 common goals to be achieved in less than two decades in 2015. These are known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are part of a global strategy called Agenda 2030. Education has been proposed as a fundamental element for the achievement of the SDGs, with all components of the education system being essential to contribute to a more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable world. Specifically, Physical Education (PE) has been described as a subject that has important characteristics in achieving the SDGs; however, in previous literature there is still no research aimed at assessing PE teachers' interventions in sustainability. In order to investigate this area, this study aims to explore PEFs' knowledge of the SDGs. For this purpose, a qualitative-exploratory interview-based study was conducted. Twelve secondary school DEFs (six female) responded to eight questions grouped into three dimensions. The concept of sustainability, the analysis of sustainable behaviors and considerations on the value of Physical Education in contributing to the achievement of the SDGs. The results showed that the DEFs conceive sustainability mainly as an environmental issue, leaving aside the economic and social aspects. Furthermore, most of them confirm that they do not engage in any kind of sustainable behavior in class, limiting themselves to teaching the contents of the subject. Finally, they point out SDG 3 "Health and well-being" as the one most related to Physical Education, mentioning SDG 5 "Gender equality" and SDG 16 "Peace and social justice" secondarily. These results will help to establish future interventions and research aimed at improving teaching actions within the framework of Physical Education.

Balancing the social, economic and environmental priorities for public health is at the core of the United Nations (UN) approaches to sustainable development, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The four dimensions of sustainable diets are often presented as health, society, economics, and the environment. Although sustainable diet research has focused on health and the environment, the social and economic dimensions of sustainable diets and food systems should not be forgotten. Some research priorities and sociocultural indicators for sustainable healthy diets and food systems are outlined in this report. The present goal is to improve integration of the social dimension into research on food and nutrition security.

This chapter uses evidence from the Parenting Across Cultures (PAC) project to illustrate ways in which longitudinal data can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs.) The chapter begins by providing an overview of the research questions that have guided the international PAC as well as a description of the participants, procedures, and measures. Next, empirical findings from PAC are summarized to illustrate implications for six specific SDGs related to child and adolescent development in relation to education, poverty, gender, mental health, and well-being. Then the chapter describes how longitudinal data offer advantages over cross-sectional data in operationalizing SDG targets and implementing the SDGs. Finally, limitations, future research directions, and conclusions are provided.

The health of women is a crucial component to family and community wellbeing. However, social work scholars have not been very engaged in research pertaining to the health needs of women. With the Grand Challenges of Social Work becoming a major element for national discussion and with the revision of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SGD) in 2015, we wondered how connected the 12 Grand Challenges and the 17 SDGs were. We searched the social work literature from 2005 to present to identify what salient publications were available about women’s health and then connected them to the current themes of the Grand Challenges and SDGs. There are no more articles to review in the social work literature. Using a feminist social work framework, we summarize the topics covered in these articles and define a call to action for more scholarly work on women’s health in the context of current national and global conversations about this social justice issue.

China is a fascinating market in terms of alcohol consumption. Although drinking bars originated in the West, economic and societal developments have spread the concept throughout China. In 2017, there were approximately 59,600 drinking bars in China, with a 44.06 billion RMB market size. Given societal development, the Chinese bar industry has gradually paid attention to environmental protection and sustainable development. A sustainable bar adopts a management model that reduces and recycles waste and saves energy. The social responsibility of bars is reflected in sustainable consumption. The concept of sustainable bars has been well-received worldwide. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) provides direction on sustainable development to relevant stakeholders. The 2030 Agenda contains 17 interactive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the SDG12. Thus, it is important to explore the development of Chinese sustainable bars under the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs. Hence, the Institute for Sustainable Development Goals (TUSDG) of Tsinghua University, Pernod Ricard China, and Kantar China organized one tripartite research group and conducted investigations on drinking bars from three megacities (Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing) to explore the situation, recognition, perspectives, and actions of sustainable bars in China. The results have significant implications. Moreover, the three parties jointly released the “Sustainable Bar Operation Initiatives” and the “Operational Sustainable Bar Application Guidelines” for the bar industry in China.

Abstract Background “Gender equality’’ is the fifth of the Sustainable Development Goals put forward in order to ensure the development in all areas. Medical faculty students, who will be a doctor, should practice with a gender equality perspective and shape their views and attitudes with equality in mind which will have an important part in the adoption of equality by society. The aim of the study was to evaluate the perception of social gender roles in medical students. Methods This cross - sectional study was performed with all students in Eskisehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Medicine. The questionnaire includes sociodemographic characteristics and Gender of Perception Scale(PCS) to measure perception of social gender roles. The scores that can be taken from the scale are ranged from 25 to 125, and high scores indicate that perception of gender is positive and equality. Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis were used in univariate analysis; multivariate linear regression was used in multivariate analysis. Results The study group consisted of 1023 (84.3%) students in the study group, 52.8% were females and their ages ranged from 17 to 30 and the mean was 21.36 ± 2.06. The PCS scores ranged from 32 to 125 and the mean was 108.07±16.58. Multivariate linear regression analyzes were performed to determine the factors associated with the PCS. According to the results of last model sex, living with grandparents until the age of 18, region of the majority of life and parental attitudes were found to be related to perception of social gender roles (F = 29.602, R2=0.170, p < 0.001). Conclusions The perception of gender of medical students was found to be positive. Sex and the characteristics of the social environment were related to perception of gender. In order to raise awareness on gender equality, it might be useful to ensure integration in the medical education curriculum. Key messages Factors that can be changed, such as the social characteristics of the living environment, were found to be related to perception of social gender roles. Ensuring gender equality, one of the Sustainable Development Goals, is important for medical students who will be a role model for society.
