The Gordon-Ng models are tools that have been used to estimate and evaluate the performance of various types of chillers for several years. A 550 TR centrifugal chiller plant facility was available to collect data from July and September 2018. The authors propose rearranging variables of the traditional (GNU) model based on average electric consumption and through a thermodynamic analysis comparable to the original model. Furthermore, assumptions are validated. Then, by estimation of the parameters of the new model using least square fitting with field training data and comparing to the GNU model and Braun model (based on consumption), it was shown that the proposed model provides a better prediction in order to evaluate consumption of a centrifugal chiller in regular operation, by improving the coefficient of variation (CV), CV = 3.24% and R2 = 92.52% for a filtered sub-data. Through an algorithm built from steady-state cycle analysis, physical parameters (Sgen, Qleak,eq, R) were estimated to compare with the same parameters obtained by regression to check the influence of the interception term in the model. It was found that without an interception term, the estimated parameters achieve relative errors (ER) below 20%. Additional comparison between external and internal power prediction is shown, with CV = 3.57 % and mean relative error (MRE) of 2.7%, achieving better accuracy than GNU and Braun model.

Abstract We have modeled dynamics of EEG with one degree of freedom nonlinear oscillator and examined the relationship between mental state of humans and model parameters simulating behavior of EEG. At the IMECE conference last year, Our analysis method identified model parameters sequentially so as to match the waveform of experimental EEG data of the alpha band using one second running window. Results of temporal variation of model parameters suggested that the mental condition such as degree of concentration could be directly observed from the dynamics of EEG signal. The method of identifying the model parameters in accordance with the EEG waveform is effective in examining the dynamics of EEG strictly, but it is not suitable for practical use because the analysis (parameter identification) takes a long time. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to test the proposed model-based analysis method for general application as a neurotechnology. The mathematical model used in neuroscience was improved for practical use, and the test was conducted with the cooperation of four subjects. model parameters were experimentally identified approximately every one second by using least square method. We solved a binary classification problem of model parameters using Support Vector Machine. Results show that our proposed model-based EEG analysis is able to discriminate concentration states in various tasks with an accuracy of over 80%.

Abstract Easy-to-use tire models for vehicle dynamics have been persistently studied for such applications as control design and model-based on-line estimation. This paper proposes a modified combined-slip tire model based on Dugoff tire. The proposed model takes emphasis on less time consumption for calculation and uses a minimum set of parameters to express tire forces. Modification of Dugoff tire model is made on two aspects: one is taking different tire/road friction coefficients for different magnitudes of slip and the other is employing the concept of friction ellipse. The proposed model is evaluated by comparison with the LuGre tire model. Although there are some discrepancies between the two models, the proposed combined-slip model is generally acceptable due to its simplicity and easiness to use. Extracting parameters from the coefficients of a Magic Formula tire model based on measured tire data, the proposed model is further evaluated by conducting a double lane change maneuver, and simulation results show that the trajectory using the proposed tire model is closer to that using the Magic Formula tire model than Dugoff tire model.

This paper deals with the minimal-cost control of the modified activated sludge process with varying level of wastewater in the aerator tank. The model-based adaptive controller of the effluent substrate concentration, basing on the substrate consumption rate and manipulating the effluent flow rate outcoming from the aerator tank, is proposed and its performance is compared with conventional PI controller and open loop behavior. Since the substrate consumption rate is not measurable on-line, the estimation procedure on the basis of the least-square method is suggested. Finally, it is proved that cooperation of the DO concentration controller with the adaptive controller of the effluent substrate concentration allows the process to be operated at minimum costs (low consumption of aeration energy).

Abstract In this paper, a new empirical path loss model based on frequency, distance, and volumetric occupancy rate is generated at the 3.5 and 4.2 GHz in the scope of 5G frequency bands. This study aims to determine the effect of the volumetric occupancy rate on path loss depending on the foliage density of the trees in the pine forest area. Using 4.2 GHz and the effect of the volumetric occupancy rate contributes to the literature in terms of novelty. Both the reference measurements to generate a model and verification measurements to verify the proposed models are conducted in three different regions of the forest area with double ridged horn antennas. These regions of the artificial forest area consist of regularly sorted and identical pine trees. Root mean square error (RMSE) and R-squared values are calculated to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. For 3.5 and 4.2 GHz, while the RMSEs are 3.983 and 3.883, the values of R-squared are 0.967 and 0.963, respectively. Additionally, the results are compared with four path loss models which are commonly used in the forest area. The proposed one has the best performance among the other models with values 3.98 and 3.88 dB for 3.5 and 4.2 GHz.

AbstractLane departure collisions have contributed to the traffic accidents that cause millions of injuries and tens of thousands of casualties per year worldwide. Due to vision-based lane departure warning limitation from environmental conditions that affecting system performance, a model-based vehicle dynamics framework is proposed for estimating the lane departure event by using vehicle dynamics responses. The model-based vehicle dynamics framework mainly consists of a mathematical representation of 9-degree of freedom system, which permitted to pitch, roll, and yaw as well as to move in lateral and longitudinal directions with each tire allowed to rotate on its axle axis. The proposed model-based vehicle dynamics framework is created with a ride model, Calspan tire model, handling model, slip angle, and longitudinal slip subsystems. The vehicle speed and steering wheel angle datasets are used as the input in vehicle dynamics simulation for predicting lane departure event. Among the simulated vehicle dynamic responses, the yaw acceleration response is observed to provide earlier insight in predicting the future lane departure event compared to other vehicle dynamics responses. The proposed model-based vehicle dynamics framework had shown the effectiveness in estimating lane departure using steering wheel angle and vehicle speed inputs.

This paper presents a procedure for the derivation of an equivalent thermal network-based model applied to three-core armored submarine cables. The heat losses of the different metallic cable parts are represented as a function of the corresponding temperatures and the conductor current, using a curve-fitting technique. The model was applied to two cables with different filler designs, supposed to be equipped with distributed temperature sensing (DTS) and the optical fiber location in the equivalent circuit was adjusted so that the conductor temperature could be accurately estimated using the sensor measurements. The accuracy of the proposed model was tested for both stationary and dynamic loading conditions, with the corresponding simulations carried out using a hybrid 2D-thermal/3D-electromagnetic model and the finite element method for the numerical resolution. Mean relative errors between 1 and 3% were obtained using an actual current profile. The presented procedure can be used by cable manufacturers or by utilities to properly evaluate the cable thermal situation.

Forest/non-forest and forest species maps are often used by forest inventory programs in the forest estimation process. For example, some inventory programs establish field plots only on lands corresponding to the forest portion of a forest/non-forest map and use species-specific area estimates obtained from those maps to support the estimation of species-specific volume (V) totals. Despite the general use of these maps, the effects of their uncertainties are commonly ignored with the result that estimates might be unreliable. The goal of this study is to estimate the effects of the uncertainty of forest species maps used in the sampling and estimation processes. Random forest (RF) per-pixel predictions were used with model-based inference to estimate V per unit area for the six main forest species of La Rioja, Spain. RF models for predicting V were constructed using field plot information from the Spanish National Forest Inventory and airborne laser scanning data. To limit the prediction of V to pixels classified as one of the main forest species assessed, a forest species map was constructed using Landsat and auxiliary information. Bootstrapping techniques were implemented to estimate the total uncertainty of the V estimates and accommodated both the effects of uncertainty in the Landsat forest species map and the effects of plot-to-plot sampling variability on training data used to construct the RF V models. Standard errors of species-specific total V estimates increased from 2–9% to 3–22% when the effects of map uncertainty were incorporated into the uncertainty assessment. The workflow achieved satisfactory results and revealed that the effects of map uncertainty are not negligible, especially for open-grown and less frequently occurring forest species for which greater variability was evident in the mapping and estimation process. The effects of forest map uncertainty are greater for species-specific area estimation than for the selection of field plots used to calibrate the RF model. Additional research to generalize the conclusions beyond Mediterranean to other forest environments is recommended.
