The purpose of this study was to develop a mathematical model for non-contacting face seals to analyze how their performance is affected by thermoelastic phenomena. The model was used to solve thermal conductivity and thermoelasticity problems. The primary goal was to calculate the values of thermal deformations of the sealing rings in a non-contacting face seal with a flexibly mounted rotor (FMR) for a turbomachine. The model assumes the conversion of mechanical energy into heat in the fluid film. The heat flux generated in the fluid film is transferred first to the sealing rings and then to the fluid surrounding them. Asymmetric distribution of temperature within the sealing rings leads to the occurrence of thermal stresses and, consequently, a change in the geometry of the rings. The model is solved analytically. The distributions of temperature fields for the sealing rings in the cross-sections are calculated using the Fourier-Bessel series as a superficial function of two variables (r,z). The thermoelasticity problems described by the Navier equations are solved by applying the Boussinesq harmonic functions and Goodier’s thermoelastic displacement potential function. The proposed method involves solving various theoretical and practical problems of thermoelasticity in FMR-type non-contacting face seals. The solution of the mathematical model was made use of analytical methods, and the most important obtained results are presented in graphical form, such as the temperature distributions and axial thermal distortions in cross-sections of the rings. The calculated thermal deformations of the sealing rings are used to determine the most important seal performance parameters such as the leakage rate and power loss. The article also presents a multi-criteria analysis of seal rings materials and geometry, which makes it easier to choose the type of materials used for the sliding rings.

Mechanical energy dissipation was investigated in a cylindrical, flat bottomed vessel with four radial baffles and the pitched blade turbine impeller of varied size. This study was based upon the experimental data on the hydrodynamics of the turbulent flow of water in an agitated vessel. They were gained by means of the three-holes Pitot tube technique for three impeller-to-vessel diameter ratio d/D = 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5. The experimental results obtained for two levels below and two levels above the impeller were used in the present study. Radial profiles of the mean velocity components, static and total pressures were presented for one of the levels. Local contribution to the axial transport of the agitated charge and energy was presented. Using the assumption of the axial symmetry of the flow field the volumetric flow rates were determined for the four horizontal cross-sections. Regions of positive and negative values of the total pressure of the liquid were indicated. Energy dissipation rates in various regions of the agitated vessel were estimated in the range from 0.2 to 6.0 of the average value for the whole vessel. Hydraulic impeller efficiency amounting to about 68% was obtained. The mechanical energy transferred by the impellers is dissipated in the following ways: 54% in the space below the impeller, 32% in the impeller region, 14% in the remaining part of the agitated liquid.

Constructing a micro-sized microfluidic motor always involves the problem of how to transfer the mechanical energy out of the motor. The paper presents several experiments with pot-like microfluidic rotational motor structures driven by two perpendicular sine and cosine vibrations with amplitudes around 10 μm in the frequency region from 200 Hz to 500 Hz. The extensive theoretical research based on the mathematical model of the liquid streaming in a pot-like structure was the base for the successful real-life laboratory application of a microfluidic rotational motor. The final microfluidic motor structure allowed transferring the rotational mechanical energy out of the motor with a central axis. The main practical challenge of the research was to find the proper balance between the torque, due to friction in the bearings and the motor’s maximal torque. The presented motor, with sizes 1 mm by 0.6 mm, reached the maximal rotational speed in both directions between −15 rad/s to +14 rad/s, with the estimated maximal torque of 0.1 pNm. The measured frequency characteristics of vibration amplitudes and phase angle between the directions of both vibrational amplitudes and rotational speed of the motor rotor against frequency of vibrations, allowed us to understand how to build the pot-like microfluidic rotational motor.

Thick-wall components of the thermal power unit limit maximum heating and cooling rates during start-up or shut-down of the unit. A method of monitoring the thermal stresses in thick-walled components of thermal power plants is presented. The time variations of the local heat transfer coefficient on the inner surface of the pressure component are determined based on the measurement of the wall temperature at one or six points respectively for one- and three-dimensional unsteady temperature fields in the component. The temperature sensors are located close to the internal surface of the component. A technique for measuring the fastchanging fluid temperature was developed. Thermal stresses in pressure components with complicated shapes can be computed using FEM (Finite Element Method) based on experimentally estimated fluid temperature and heat transfer coefficient

Lsaers are emerging as a valuable tool for shaping and cutting hard and brittle ceramics. Unfortunately, the large, concentrated heat flux rates that allow the laser to efficiently cut and shape the ceramic also result in large localized thermal stresses in a small heat-affected zone. These notable thermal stresses can lead to micro-cracks, a decrease in strength and fatigue life, and possibly catastrophic failure. In order to assess where, when, and what stresses occur during laser scribing, an elastic stress model has been incorporated into a three-dimensional scribing and cutting code. First, the code predicts the temporal temperature fields and the receding surface of the ceramic. Then, using the scribed geometry and temperature field, the elastic stress fields are calculated as they develop and decay during the laser scribing process. The analysis allows the prediction of stresses during continuous wave and pulsed laser operation, a variety of cutting speeds and directions, and various shapes and types of ceramic material. The results of the analysis show substantial tensile stresses develop over a thick layer below and parallel to the surface, which may be the cause of experimentally observed subsurface cracks.

Abstract The paper deals with the improvement of central traversing system on rotor spinning machines, where rectilinear motion with variable stroke is used. A new system of traversing rod with implemented set of magnetic-mechanical energy accumulators is described. Mathematical model of this system is analysed in the MSC. Software Adams/View and verified by an experimental measurement on a real-length testing rig. Analysis results prove the enhancement of devised traversing system, where the overall dynamic force is reduced considerably. At the same time, the precision of the traversing movement over the machine length is increased. This enables to increase machine operating speed while satisfying both the maximal tensile strength of the traversing rod and also output bobbin size standards. The usage of the developed mathematical model for determination of the optimal number and distribution of accumulators over the traversing rod of optional parameters is proved. The potential of the devised system for high-performance rotor spinning machines with longer traversing rod is also discussed.

Purpose is the development of a mathematical model to study and describe thermal processes within the borehole wall in terms of plasma-based rock breaking. Methods. The following has been applied: theoretical analysis in the framework of a theory of brittle thermoelasticity breaking, methods of mathematical modeling, and computational experiment. Findings. Brief information on the results of the development of advanced plasma-based technology for borehole reaming for hard mineral mining has been represented. The results of industrial tests of plasma plant of 150-200 kW·s power with plasma-generating gas in the air for hard rock breaking have been represented. The plant and plasma-based technology of borehole reaming were tested in underground conditions of Kryvbas mines while reaming a perimeter hole to drive a ventilation rise in silicate-magnetite quartzites. A mathematical model has been proposed to analyze heat and mechanical fields in the rock during the plasma-based action on the borehole walls. Numerical studies of the temperature dynamics and thermal stresses within the borehole-surrounding rock layer have been carried out. It has been demonstrated that if low-temperature plasma is used (Т = 3500-4000°С), thermal compressing stresses are induced within the thin rock layer; the stresses may exceed the boundary admissible ones. It has been identified that plasma-based effect on the borehole wall makes it possible to create the conditions for intense rock fracturing and breaking. Originality. Solution of a new problem of thermoelastic state of a borehole wall in terms of plasma action has been obtained. The proposed mathematical model has been formulated in a cylindrical coordinate system and considers convective and radiation heat exchange between a plasma jet and a borehole wall. Practical implications. The obtained results make it possible to assess the rock state depending on the plasma jet parameters. The proposed methods of calculations will help carry out research to evaluate breaking parameters (the required heating time, thickness of the heated layer, and approximate spall dimensions) and develop different methods for the breaking process control.

An exothermic flux for submerged arc welding process has been developed which is capable of enhancing weld penetration of the joint. For this purpose, thermit mixture in different proportions (20% and 40%) has been added to the parent flux by agglomeration process. Beads on plate were deposited using parent and developed exothermic fluxes for a comparative study. EH14 filler wires in combination with parent and exothermic fluxes were used in this investigation. The effects of welding parameters and exothermic flux on weld penetration were investigated and the results have been presented in this paper. It has been found that the penetration increases from 2.95 to 3.51[Formula: see text]mm with 40% thermit mixture addition to the parent flux. It is further observed that penetration increases with increase in the amount of thermit mixture added. A mathematical model has been developed to predict weld penetration or select suitable welding parameters to obtain the desired penetration. The significance of coefficients was tested using Student’s [Formula: see text]-test and the adequacy of developed model was tested using [Formula: see text]-test. The effects of various parameters on penetration have been presented in graphical form for better understanding.

Forced or natural ventilation is the most common measure of frost heave protection for refrigerated warehouse floor. To optimize air velocity for the underfloor forced ventilation system of refrigerated warehouse, a steady state three-dimensional mathematical model of heat transfer is set up in this paper. The temperature fields of this system are simulated and calculated by CFD software PHOENICS under different air velocity, 1.5m/s, 2.5m/s or 3.5m/s. The results show that the optimized air velocity is 1.5m/s when the tube spacing is 1.5m.
