The purpose of photography in violent death autopsies is to document the material evidence of the offense and guide decisions in the courts of law. The aim of the present study was to obtain the expectations of legal operators and forensic experts regarding what is expected as adequate photographic documentation in violent death forensics. For this purpose, a survey was prepared through an online form available on the “Google Forms” platform, whose link was sent by e-mail and by the WhatsApp Messenger® application. The 102 participants were divided into two distinct groups: legal practitioners, interested in the materialization of evidence (judges, prosecutors, criminal lawyers and police chiefs), and forensic experts, responsible for materializing the evidence (medical examiners, forensic dentists and criminal experts). The research showed that the inclusion of color photographs in the expert reports is essential for all research participants, as well as the marking of evidence in the images and the inclusion of explanatory text in the captions. It was also pointed out as fundamental for most participants to insert an image with simulation of the firearm bullets’ path, when applicable. In relation to the other aspects, it can be observed that the opinions of the participants were divergent between the groups of research professionals, especially regarding the size of the image to be incorporated in the reports. The differences found between the groups can be detrimental to the proper interpretation and judgment of evidence in the courts. Considering the found barriers, the authors suggest a form of photographic documentation that meets all expectations in a consensual way.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to know the profile of members of the Brazilian Association of Orofacial Motricity and their knowledge and interest on laser therapy in Orofacial Motricity. Methods: an online form was elaborated covering questions about the speech therapist’s profile, training, and acting, as well as his/her knowledge about the theories of laser therapy and its clinical application. The form was sent via e-mail to members of the Brazilian Association of Orofacial Motricity - ABRAMO, registered in the year 2015. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and the Spearman’s correlation test. Results: only 5 (19.2%) out of the 26 participants reported having contact with laser equipment, and of these, only 1 (3.8%) used it in his/her practice. Regarding knowledge of the method, only 2 (7.7%) were trained, and the majority, 14 speech therapists (53.8%), had an interest in acquiring knowledge on this subject. Speech therapists with a longer training period were unaware of laser therapy (p = 0.03) and did not agree on the use (p = 0.01), but claimed to be interested in the subject (p = 0.05). Conclusion: it was possible to verify that the interest in improvement and insertion in the clinical practice in laser therapy are realities for the research volunteers, but a very small number has the knowledge and makes use of the technique in their interventions.

Background: During this coronavirus outbreak, online teaching and learning have become highly common in medical education. The majority of students and professors have transitioned to this comparatively modern online learning model. While faculty members found the transition to online education to be overwhelming, they persevered. Aim: study aims to investigate the Kuwait Medical educational sector's capacities and obstacles in transitioning the education system to the online form. Method: This study used a close-ended survey questionnaire constructed on Google Forms and distributed to the participants via e-mail. The study used an online Google form for formulating the questionnaire survey, which was later sent to the participants via e-mail. Results: The results showed that most of the faculty members (53%) were satisfied with online learning. The most prominent difficulty emphasized by the faculty members (35%) was network vulnerability n online teaching. The majority of the faculty members (45%) agreed that transitioning to remote teaching is a big challenge and that there is inequality for different technology uses (56%). Conclusion: Online learning has been increasingly relevant in medical education in recent months. It has its own set of benefits for improving students' knowledge and skills, and it may be used as an instructional tool in medical school.

AbstractThe aim of the study was to analyze practices of clinical photographic documentation management among plastic surgeons in Poland as well as to gain their opinion about the characteristics of “ideal” software for images archiving.Material and methods. The on-line survey link was send (via e-mail) to all members of Polish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. From 187 members, 86 subjects (47.5%, 54 men and 32 women, of the mean age 40.8 years ± 10.6 years) filled in the on-line questionnaire, which constitutes a representative sample of plastic surgeons practicing in Poland.Results. The study showed that only 7% of plastic surgeons use IT applications dedicated to archiving photographs. Instead, more than half of them store photos in ordered folders on computers. The majority of respondents (89.3%) are interested in using a dedicated computer application to archive photographic documentation. The most important features, which an application of this type should have are (265 answers): quick search (26%), easy to use (24%), quick data entry (22%), data security (15%), an ability to print selected data (7%), availability only to authorized employees of the unit (5%).Conclusions. Cooperation of health care providers with informatics may lead to the conceptualization of a program fulfilling the requirements of specific medical groups. On the basis of the questionnaire study we have collected the data necessary to create the concept of the unique software that would be useful for clinical practice of plastic surgeons as well for other specialists dealing with photographic documentation.

Photography in forensic autopsies of violent death is intended to document the material evidence of the offense and guide decisions in the courts of law. In this paper, we tested the hypothesis that the current photographs, presented in the forensic reports of the Dr. José Adelino da Silva Legal Medical Institute, in Porto Velho, located in the capital of the State of Rondônia, in Brazil, would be inappropriate for not meeting the criteria that must contribute to the final quality of forensic photography. Through a retrospective analysis, we evaluated the quality of the photographs incorporated in the reports of the forensic autopsies related to violent death. We concluded that more than half of the incorporated photographs (52.6%) were not technically feasible and, regarding this criterion, they should not have been used in the reports. Considering the limitations found, it is suggested strategies to be adopted at the Institute to correct them, being essential the elaboration of a protocol with the harmonized procedures for the photographic record of the forensic autopsies with a view to improving the forensic expert reports.

The Information SuperHighway, Email, The Internet, FTP, BBS, Modems, : all buzz words which are becoming more and more routine in our daily life. Confusing terminology? Hopefully it won't be in a few minutes, all you need is to have a handle on a few basic concepts and terms and you will be on-line with the rest of the "telecommunication experts". These terms all refer to some type or aspect of tools associated with a range of computer-based communication software and hardware. They are in fact far less complex than the instruments we use on a day to day basis as microscopist's and microanalyst's. The key is for each of us to know what each is and how to make use of the wealth of information which they can make available to us for the asking. Basically all of these items relate to mechanisms and protocols by which we as scientists can easily exchange information rapidly and efficiently to colleagues in the office down the hall, or half-way around the world using computers and various communications media. The purpose of this tutorial/paper is to outline and demonstrate the basic ideas of some of the major information systems available to all of us today. For the sake of simplicity we will break this presentation down into two distinct (but as we shall see later connected) areas: telecommunications over conventional phone lines, and telecommunications by computer networks. Live tutorial/demonstrations of both procedures will be presented in the Computer Workshop/Software Exchange during the course of the meeting.
