Recently, and considering the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a growing consensus that the disinfection of surfaces contaminated with pathogenic viral particles is essential. Chemical disinfectant sprays are effective at preventing the spread of infectious human noroviruses (Hu-NoVs) in healthcare and public areas. We assessed the virucidal activity of slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) spray on fomite surfaces. A multivariate statistical assessment that combined a response surface methodology (RSM) and a Box–Behnken design (BBD) was performed to define the optimal parameters of, and correlations among, experimental conditions. Spraying SAEW disinfectant (oxidation-reduction potential: 1123 mV, pH range: 5.12, available chlorine concentration: 33.22 ppm) resulted in the successful decontamination of Hu-NoV, with a 4-log reduction in viral particles on polyvinyl chloride, stainless steel, ceramic tile, and glass surfaces. Our experimental data revealed optimized treatment conditions for decontaminating Hu-NoV GI.6 and GII.4, using the numerical multiple optimized method (spraying rate: 218 mL/min, spraying time: 4.9 s, spraying distance: 0.9 m). These findings offer significant insights for designing optimal strategic control practices to prevent infectious disease, particularly Hu-NoV, transmission.

AbstractA potentiometric titration method (PT) and a stopped-flow kinetic technique monitored by a UV−Vis spectroscopy have been used to characterize the stability of series of Co(II)- and Ni(II)-thiodiacetato complexes, M(TDA), in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2’-bipyridine (bipy) in aqueous solutions. The stability constants of the binary (1:1), ternary (1:1:1) as well as the resulting hydroxo complexes were evaluated and compared to the corresponding oxydiacetate complexes. Based on the species distribution as a function of pH the relative predominance of the species in the system over a pH range was discussed. Furthermore, the kinetic measurements of the substitution reactions of the aqua ligands to phen or bipy in the coordination sphere of the binary complexes M(TDA) were performed in the 288–303 K temperature range, at a constant concentration of phen or bipy and at seven different concentrations of the binary complexes (0.2–0.5 mM). The kinetic stability of the M(TDA) complexes was discussed in relation to the experimental conditions and the kind of the auxiliary ligands (phen/bipy). Moreover, the influence of the type of primary ligand (thiodiacetate/oxydiacetate) on the substitution rate of the auxiliary ligands was also compared.

The hydrophilicity of fibers is directly related to the comfort of a fabric and represents one of the most important aspects of a textile. Therefore, polyester (PES) modification has focused on an increase in moisture content and a subsequent improvement of the user’s experience. Based on the glycerol hygroscopic properties, the main objective has been the enhancement of the hydrophilicity of polyester by glycerol treatments. Furthermore, microwave irradiation and alkaline treatment have been applied, in order to increase glycerol adhesion. Treated PES samples were characterized by performing moisture content, negative ion, water diffusion and water vapor resistance analyses. The effect of different treatment conditions such as bath ratio (1/10 or 1/15), temperature (40, 60 or 100 °C), time (2 or 5 min) and microwave radiation intensity (300 or 500 W) was evaluated. The moisture content of treated PES results indicated that by decreasing the bath ratio and increasing the time and temperature the moisture gain can reach almost 14%, which can be easily related to increases in the weight of the fiber. The treatment with alkali was done and led to the highest moisture increase. Treatment with 500 W microwave irradiation led to higher glycerol retention after rinsing. Different experimental conditions were applied to the glycerol-treated PES fabrics, and a clear improvement in moisture content was obtained increasing the comfort. The results were compared with the ones obtained for cotton and wool, where the moisture is higher than non treated PES.

In work the possibility of red sludge (waste of aluminum production by Bayer's method) to adsorb phosphate ions from water solutions at various concentration of ions and in the pH range from 3 to 10 is studied. Relevance of use of red sludge for receiving on its basis of sorbents is reasoned. For identification of the studied object the qualitative and quantitative composition of red sludge was established by the method of the X-ray phase analysis. The technique of red slage activation by hydrochloric acid, and also an adsorption technique of phosphate ions on the red sludge surface is described. Experimental studies of adsorption of phosphate ions on the surface of the red slage activated by hydrochloric acid depending on рН and concentration of initial solution were conducted. The dependence of adsorption phosphate ions on the red slage activated by НСl on рН and on the initial concentration of phosphate ions in solution is presented. These dependences of a relative fraction of distribution of various ions of phosphoric acid on рН are given in work. The form of ion phosphate having the greatest adsorptive activity on the red slage activated by hydrochloric acid in experimental conditions is revealed. Experimental data on dependence of adsorption of phosphate ions on their initial concentration in solution are described by Frumkin's isotherm. The constant of the adsorptive balance, limit adsorption, the parameter of intermolecular interaction of the adsorbed particles are calculated. We evaluated the antiviral activity of the marine alga, Ulva fasciata, collected from Rasa beach and Forno beach, Búzios, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on the replication of human metapneumovirus (HMPV). The algae extracts were prepared using three different methodologies to compare the activity of different groups of chemical composites obtained through these different methodologies. Four out of the six extracts inhibited nearly 100% of viral replication. The results demonstrated that the majority of the extracts (five out of six) possess virucidal activity and therefore have the ability to interact with the extracellular viral particles and prevent the infection. On the other hand, only two extracts (from Forno beach, obtained by maceration and maceration of the decoction) were able to interact with cell receptors, hindering the viral entry. Finally, only the extract of algae collected at Forno beach, obtained by maceration presented intracellular activity. To our knowledge, this is a pioneer study on antiviral activity of marine algae against HMPV. It is also the first on antiviral activity against HMPV ever done in Brazil. The study also shows the effect of different environment factors and different chemical procedures used to obtain the extract on its biological properties.

ABSTRACT Garlic is one of the most popular spices in the food industry because of its unique flavor, aroma, and health benefits. However, garlic is easily contaminated by spore-forming Bacillus cereus from the soil. We studied inactivation of B. cereus spores using superheated steam (SHS) and germinant compounds such as l-alanine, inosine, and disodium 5′-inosinate. Treatment with SHS and germinant compounds (50 mM l-alanine plus 5 mM disodium inosine 5′-monophosphate) on B. cereus spores was more effective than SHS treatment alone. The inactivation trends were analyzed using the Weibull model, and a time required to achieve a 3-log reduction was determined. These values at 120°C after SHS and germinant compounds plus SHS were 2.14 and 1.26 min, respectively. In addition, SHS and germinant compounds plus SHS treatments inactivated B. cereus ATCC 14579 spores effectively without causing sublethal injury. Levels of inactivation of B. cereus spores enumerated on mannitol–egg yolk–polymyxin and overlaid with Brilliance Bacillus Cereus were not significantly different for all treatment conditions. Therefore, germinant compounds plus SHS treatment can be used effectively to control B. cereus ATCC 14579 spores on garlic. HIGHLIGHTS

Abstract The dicarboximide fungicide procymidone was studied systematically by using direct current polarography, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse polarography (DPP), controlled potential electrolysis, and millicoulometry in the universal buffer medium with dimethylformamide as the solvent. Procymidone exhibited a single well-defined polarographic wave in the pH range 2.0–6.0, leading to the formation of the hydroxy compound. The overall reduction process was diffusion-controlled and adsorption-free. The variation of half-wave potential with pH, the concentration of the analyte, and other experimental conditions are described. The reduction mechanism proposed is an overall 4-electron process, in which the dicarboximide group is reduced. DPP was used to determine procymidone in agricultural formulations and wine at the optimum conditions found; a detection limit of 2.4 × 10−9M was estimated. The results obtained by the proposed method were also compared with those obtained by other methods.

The knowledge of genomic data of new plant viruses is increasing exponentially; however, some aspects of their biology, such as vectors and host range, remain mostly unknown. This information is crucial for the understanding of virus–plant interactions, control strategies, and mechanisms to prevent outbreaks. Typically, rhabdoviruses infect monocot and dicot plants and are vectored in nature by hemipteran sap-sucking insects, including aphids, leafhoppers, and planthoppers. However, several strains of a potentially whitefly-transmitted virus, papaya cytorhabdovirus, were recently described: (i) bean-associated cytorhabdovirus (BaCV) in Brazil, (ii) papaya virus E (PpVE) in Ecuador, and (iii) citrus-associated rhabdovirus (CiaRV) in China. Here, we examine the potential of the Bemisia tabaci Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) to transmit BaCV, its morphological and cytopathological characteristics, and assess the incidence of BaCV across bean producing areas in Brazil. Our results show that BaCV is efficiently transmitted, in experimental conditions, by B. tabaci MEAM1 to bean cultivars, and with lower efficiency to cowpea and soybean. Moreover, we detected BaCV RNA in viruliferous whiteflies but we were unable to visualize viral particles or viroplasm in the whitefly tissues. BaCV could not be singly isolated for pathogenicity tests, identification of the induced symptoms, and the transmission assay. BaCV was detected in five out of the seven states in Brazil included in our study, suggesting that it is widely distributed throughout bean producing areas in the country. This is the first report of a whitefly-transmitted rhabdovirus.

The proteolytic activity of dilute solutions of clystalline trypsin is destroyed by x-rays, the amount of inactivation being an exponential function of the radiation dose. The reaction yield increases steadily with increasing concentration of trypsin, varying, as the concentration of enzyme is increased from 1 to 300 µM, from 0.068 to 0.958 micromole of trypsin per liter inactivated per 1000 r with 0.005 N hydrochloric acid as the solvent, from 0.273 to 0.866 with 0.005 N sulfuric acid as the solvent, and from 0.343 to 0.844 with 0.005 N nitric acid as the solvent. When the reaction yields are plotted as a function of the initial concentration of trypsin, they fall on a curve given by the expression Y α XK, in which Y is the reaction yield, X is the concentration of trypsin, and K is a constant equal to 0.46, 0.20, and 0.16, respectively, with 0.005 N hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acids as solvents. The differences between the reaction yields found with chloride and sulfate ions in I to 10 µM trypsin solutions are significant only in the pH range from 2 to 4. The amount of inactivation obtained with a given dose of x-rays depends on the pH of the solution being irradiated and the nature of the solvent. The reaction yield-pH curve is a symmetrical one, with minimum yields at about pH 7. Buffers such as acetate, citrate, borate and barbiturate, and other organic molecules such as ethanol and glucose, in concentrations as low as 20 µM, inhibit the inactivation of trypsin by x-radiation. Sigmoid inactivation-dose curves instead of exponential ones are obtained in the presence of ethanol. The reaction yields for the inactivation of trypsin solutions by x-rays are approximately 1.5 times greater when the irradiation is done at 26°C. than when it is done at 5°C., when 0.005 N hydrochloric acid is the solvent. The dependence on temperature is less when 0.005 N sulfuric acid is used, and is negligible with 0.005 N nitric acid. The difficulties involved in interpreting radiation effects in aqueous systems, and in comparing the results obtained under different experimental conditions, are discussed.

1. Human α2-macroglobulin was prepared from a fraction obtained during the large-scale separation of normal human plasma proteins for clinical use. 2. Sedimentation-equilibrium measurements indicated a molecular weight of 725000. A value of 18.1S was obtained for s020,w. 3. The dissociation that occurs in the pH range 4.5–2.5 and in the region of neutrality in urea-containing solutions is consistent with a dimeric structure of the molecule. 4. The effects of the thiol reagents mercaptoethanol, mercaptoethylamine and N-acetylcysteine were investigated over a range of experimental conditions. Distinct components having sedimentation coefficients of 15, 12 and 8.5S were identified. 5. Conditions were found under which limited reduction with thiol liberated a subunit with a molecular weight approximately one-quarter of that of the intact molecule. This subunit retains the serological specificity of the whole molecule.

The conditions for the efficient separation of tungsten(VI) and rhenium (VII) on alumina were established. The distribution coefficients K d for tungstate and perrhenate anions, as well as the separation factors ?(? = KdWO42-/Kd ReO4-) were determined using hydrochloric or nitric acid as the aqueous media. Asolution of sodium chloride in the pH range 2?6 was also examined. Under all the tested experimental conditions, alumina is a much better adsorbent for tungsten than for rhenium. The obtained results indicated that the best separation of these two elements is achieved when 0.01? 0.1 mol dm-3HCl or 1.0mol dm-3 HNO3 are used as the aqueous media. If NaCl is used as the aqueous phase, the best separation is achieved with 0.20 mol dm-3 NaCl pH 4?6. Under these experimental conditions, the breakthrough and saturation capacities of alumina for tungsten at pH4 are 17 and 26 mg W/g Al2O3 respectively. With increasing pH, these values decrease. Thus, at pH 6 they are only 4 and 13 mg W/g Al2O3, respectively.
