In previous studies we produced autism like behavioral changes in mice by Valproic acid (VPA) with significant differences between genders. S-adenosine methionine (SAM) prevented the autism like behavior in both genders. The expression of 770 genes of pathways involved in neurophysiology and neuropathology was studied in the prefrontal cortex of 60 days old male and female mice using the NanoString nCounter. In females, VPA induced statistically significant changes in the expression of 146 genes; 71 genes were upregulated and 75 downregulated. In males, VPA changed the expression of only 19 genes, 16 were upregulated and 3 downregulated. Eight genes were similarly changed in both genders. When considering only the genes that were changed by at least 50%, VPA changed the expression of 15 genes in females and 3 in males. Only Nts was similarly downregulated in both genders. SAM normalized the expression of most changed genes in both genders. We presume that genes that are involved in autism like behavior in our model were similarly changed in both genders and corrected by SAM. The behavioral and other differences between genders may be related to genes that were differently affected by VPA in males and females and/or differently affected by SAM.

This study analyzed gender differences in the progressive dopamine (DA) deficiency phenotype in the MitoPark (MP) mouse model of Parkinson’s disease (PD) with progressive loss of DA release and reuptake in midbrain DA pathways. We found that the progressive loss of these DA presynaptic parameters begins significantly earlier in male than female MP mice. This was correlated with behavioral gender differences of both forced and spontaneous motor behavior. The degeneration of the nigrostriatal DA system in MP mice is earlier and more marked than that of the mesolimbic DA system, with male MP mice again being more strongly affected than female MP mice. After ovariectomy, DA presynaptic and behavioral changes in female mice become very similar to those of male animals. Our results suggest that estrogen, either directly or indirectly, is neuroprotective in the midbrain DA system. Our results are compatible with epidemiological data on incidence and symptom progression in PD, showing that men are more strongly affected than women at early ages.

This study looked at how males and females were portrayed, based on the amount of skin shown in the clothing worn.  A Content analysis was performed on a sample of 20 randomly selected popular comics from the last 3 years.  Both male and female characters were rated on how much skin they showed in three clothing categories; neck line, sleeve length, and lower body.  Results showed that in all 3 categories, women consistently wore more revealing clothing.  The findings demonstraetd that the comic book industry is comparable to other forms of media, in the sexualization of female characters, by having them wear more revealing clothing.

Recent studies by our group demonstrated that leptin is a direct regulator of aldosterone secretion and increases blood pressure via sex-specific mechanisms involving leptin-mediated activation of the aldosterone-mineralocorticoid receptor signaling pathway in females and sympatho-activation in males. Although it is well accepted that females secrete more leptin and aldosterone than males, it is unknown whether leptin infusion raises blood pressure similarly in male and female mice and whether higher aldosterone levels sensitize females to salt-induced hypertension. We hypothesized that female mice would be more sensitive to leptin than males and also have a potentiated blood pressure rise in response to high salt diet compared to males. Male and female Balb/C mice were implanted with radiotelemeters for continuous measurement of mean arterial pressure (MAP) at 10 weeks of age. MAP was measured for seven days prior to feeding with a high-salt diet (HS, 4%NaCl) for seven days. Following a recovery period, animals were then implanted with osmotic minipumps containing leptin (0.9mg/kg/day) recorded for seven days. Baseline MAP was similar between males and females (101.3±2.9 vs 99.3±3.7 mmHg, n=4 and 5, respectively), however, HS diet resulted in a greater MAP increase in females (15.0±2.6 mmHg) compared to males (3.1±4.5 mmHg, P<0.05). MAP with leptin treatment was increased with leptin in females moreso than in males, however, this did not reach significance (6.8±5.8 vs 1.8±5.9 mmHg, respectively). This potential sex difference in blood pressure responses to leptin was not associated with changes in body weight (0.07±0.44 vs -0.22±0.2 g, respectively) nor changes in blood glucose (-19.67±15.06 vs -15.4±11.4 mg/dl, respectively) in males and females in response to leptin. In summary, female mice are more sensitive to HS diet-induced blood pressure increases than males. Females may be more sensitive to leptin-mediated blood pressure increases than males. Further investigation is needed to determine whether these sex differences in blood pressure responses to HS diet and leptin are mediated by aldosterone or other mechanisms.

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) exerts both catabolic and anabolic actions on bone. Studies on the skeletal effects of PTH have seldom considered the effects of gender. Our study was designed to determine whether the response of mouse bone to PTH differed according to sex. As a first step, we analyzed gender differences with respect to bone mass and structural properties of 4 month old PTH treated (80 μg/kg per day for 2 weeks) male and female CD-1 mice. PTH significantly increased fat free weight/body weight, periosteal bone formation rate, mineral apposition rate, and endosteal single labeling surface, while significantly decreasing medullary area in male mice compared with vehicle treated controls, but induced no significant changes in female mice. We then analyzed the gender differences in bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) isolated from 4 month old male and female CD-1 mice following treatment with PTH (80 μg/kg per day for 2 weeks). PTH significantly increased the osteogenic colony number and the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity (ALP/cell) by day 14 in cultures of BMSCs from male and female mice. PTH also increased the mRNA level of receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand in the bone tissue (marrow removed) of both females and males. However, PTH increased the mRNA levels of IGF-I and IGF-IR only in the bones of male mice. Our results indicate that on balance a 2-weeks course of PTH is anabolic on cortical bone in this mouse strain. These effects are more evident in the male mouse. These differences between male and female mice may reflect the greater response to PTH of IGF-I and IGF-IR gene expression in males enhancing the anabolic effect on cortical bone.

Touching into the gender differences between males and females in expressing the use of exaggeration expressions, this study analyzes the relevant data using the LIWC tool, the HIP method, and the deficit and difference theories. This study found that in relation to the gender stereotypes, both males and females speak differently, yet also demonstrate similarities. Both the male and female subjects express emotions equally in the language production; yet, the negative emotions are dominated by the males, and the positive emotions are dominated by the females. The difference of emotion productions influences the differences in the males’ production of exaggeration expressions, such as empty adjectives, italic expressions, and hyperbole by the female subjects.

Greater emphasis is now placed on ethics in information technology (IT) which covers a broad range of issues such as privacy, honesty, trustworthiness, software reliability, data storage, the environment, security breaches, hacking, viruses, and acknowledging the intellectual property of others. Further, legal aspects tend to overlap ethics perceptions. For example, issues such as copying computer programs, music CDs, images, or videos are more than just ethical problems; they also pose legal problems. The ethical dimensions also extend to issues such as computer crime and fraud, information theft, and unauthorized information dissemination. These ethical issues are becoming more complex as continuing advances in IT present many new ethical situations and fresh dilemmas. Developments such as the Internet, electronic commerce, and wireless/mobile communications present a new set of ethical issues and challenge current of codes of ethics, copyright laws, and their authors. In addition, computer users’ ethical standards may also vary from one situation to another (Wikipedia, 2005). What is ethical is subjective, and more so in the areas of IT. Perceptions of ethics in IT vary to a degree from individual to individual. Further, there seems to be significant differences in the perception of ethics among males and females. According to Adam (2000), male and female judgment is most often influenced by their personal values and whether an action is considered legal. Woodcock (2002) conducted a study on ethical perceptions among 405 male and female students from universities, technical colleges, and schools in North-Eastern Australia and found significant differences in some ethical situations between males and females. This article presents common issues and dilemmas that confront IT professionals, students, and the general community. In particular, it presents gender differences in perceptions of ethics and legalities in IT and highlights the different ethical perceptions of male and female students. These insights are particularly significant as the ethical beliefs and perceptions that students have may influence their ethical behaviors during their working careers.

Chronic endurance exercise is a therapeutic strategy in the treatment of many chronic diseases in humans, including the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Metabolic, cardiorespiratory and endocrine pathways targeted by chronic endurance exercise have been identified. In the liver however, the cellular and molecular pathways that are modified by exercise and have preventive or therapeutic relevance to metabolic disease remain unresolved. The mouse model used in the current study allows for the quantification of a human-relevant exercise “dosage”. In this study we show hepatic gene expression differences between sedentary female and sedentary male mice, and that chronic exercise modifies the transcription of hepatic genes related to metabolic disease and steatosis in both male and female mice. Chronic exercise induces molecular pathways involved in glucose tolerance, glycolysis and gluconeogenesis while producing a decrease in pathways related to insulin resistance, steatosis, fibrosis, and inflammation. Given these findings, this mouse exercise model has potential to dissect the cellular and molecular hepatic changes following chronic exercise with application to understanding the role that chronic exercise plays in preventing human diseases. Background The development of novel migraine therapies has been slow, in part because of the small number of clinically relevant animal models. We have recently developed a new mouse model of chronic migraine using chronic intermittent nitroglycerin, a known human migraine trigger. The objective of this study was to validate this model by testing known and potential migraine-preventive treatments. Methods Migraine therapies were administered to male and female mice for 11 days. On day 3, mice were tested with nitroglycerin every second day for nine days. Basal and nitroglycerin-evoked mechanical hypersensitivity was evaluated using von Frey filaments. Results Chronic intermittent nitroglycerin produced acute hyperalgesia with each administration, and progressive and sustained basal hypersensitivity. The established preventive migraine therapy propranolol effectively blocked the development of acute and chronic nitroglycerin-induced hyperalgesia, while valproate had no effect. Potential migraine-preventive therapies were also tested: Amiloride inhibited nitroglycerin-induced acute and chronic hyperalgesia; while memantine was ineffective. We also tested the acute migraine therapy sumatriptan, which did not alter nitroglycerin-induced hyperalgesia, but instead resulted in acute and chronic hyperalgesia similar to that observed following nitroglycerin administration. Conclusions This study establishes the chronic nitroglycerin model as an additional screening tool to test novel migraine-preventive therapies.
