Starvation occurs when the lubricated contact uses up the lubricant supply, and there is not enough lubricant in the contact to support the separation between solid surfaces. On the other hand, the use of textures on surfaces in lubricated contacts can result in a higher film thickness. In addition, a modification of the surface’s geometrical parameters can benefit the tribological behaviour of the contacts. In this article, for parallel sliding surfaces in starved lubricated conditions, the effect of surface texturing upon the coefficient of friction is investigated. It is shown that surface texturing may improve film formation under the conditions of starvation, and as a result, the frictional behaviour of the parallel sliding contact. Furthermore, the effect of starved lubrication on textured surfaces with different patterns in the presence of a cavitation effect, and its influence on frictional behaviour, is investigated. It is shown that surface texturing can reduce the coefficient of friction, and that under certain conditions, the texturing parameter could have an influence on the frictional behaviour of parallel sliding contacts in the starved lubrication regime.

In many industrial applications, a modification of the surface geometry can enhance the tribological behaviour of lubricated sliding contacts. In this paper, the effect of surface texturing on the coefficient of friction in parallel sliding lubricated surfaces is investigated. It is shown that surface texturing can improve film formation and, as a result, the load-carrying capacity as well as a reduction in the coefficient of friction. With the numerical model developed, and by considering cavitation, the effects of shape, depth, size, and the textured area fraction on the frictional behaviour of parallel sliding lubricated contacts under conditions of mixed lubrication is studied. In this article it is shown that the surface texturing can have a beneficial effect, in order to decrease friction.

The present comparative numerical study is between V-shape protruded, dimple textured, and untextured bearing. The performance parameters in terms of the load-carrying capacity and coefficient of friction are computed by solving governing Reynold’s equation of the lubricant fluid flow. The governing equation is solved by the finite element method by assuming that the fluid is Newtonian and isoviscous in nature. The effect of eccentricity ratios, texture distribution, texture heights, and texture depths are considered for the analysis in both textured bearings. From simulated results, the load-carrying capacity and coefficient of friction is found to be maximum for protruded textured bearing in full textured region and first half-textured region respectively as compared to untextured bearings. Finally, optimal operating and geometrical parameters of textured bearing is obtained by computing performance enhancement ratio, which is the ratio of the load-carrying capacity to the coefficient of friction. The maximum value of the performance enhancement ratio is found for protruded and dimple textured bearing in full texturing and second half-region corresponding to the eccentricity ratio of 0.8 and 0.6 respectively at texture height and depth of 0.4.


A study is made of the frictional behaviour of crystals (diamond, magnesium oxide, sapphire) sliding on themselves in high vacuum (10 -10 torr). The surface films normally present on these crystals are very tenacious but they may be worn away by repeated sliding in the same track. Under these conditions the friction of the clean crystals may increase by a factor of ten so that the coefficient of friction may rise to μ ≈ 1. The frictional rise is limited because of the elastic and brittle behaviour of the contact regions. Under these conditions subsurface deformation and fracture of the crystal occurs and this, combined with the high surface adhesion, causes pronounced wear. Adsorption of a few molecular layers of gas can again reduce the friction to a low value. The results are relevant to the operation of bearings and to the wear of surfaces in space.

In this research, geometric parameters were given in dimensionless form by the Π- Buckingham dimensional analysis method in the dimensionless group for deep drawing of a round cup. To find the best group of dimensionless parameters and the fittest dimensionless relational model, three scales of the cup are evaluated numerically by a commercial finite element software and stepwise regression modeling. After analyzing all effective geometric parameters, a fittest relational model among dimensionless parameters is found. In addition, the results of the new dimensionless model were compared with the simulation process and experimental tests. From the results, it is inferred that the geometric qualities of a large scale can be predicted with a small scale by the proposed dimensionless model. Comparing the results of the dimensionless model with experimental tests shows that the proposed dimensionless model has fine precision in the determination of geometrical parameters and drawing force estimation. Moreover, to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed dimensionless model, the predicted value of the model has been compared by the experimental results. It is shown that the dimensionless ratios of geometrical parameters can significantly affect the estimation of the drawing force by the proposed dimensionless model, but based on similarity law, because of the constant value of these dimensionless parameters in different scales, they could not be used for dimensionless analysis separately. It is also inferred that because of the effect of contact area on the coefficient of friction, which is changed by scale changing, the only dimensionless parameter that can significantly change the drawing force is the coefficient of friction. Finally, it is shown that the dimensionless geometrical parameter and the coefficient friction should be combined for dimensionless analysis.

Silicon wafers were exposed to an oblique Ar+ ion beam to create arrays of surface ripples. Atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging revealed that the rippled (textured) surfaces exhibited highly anisotropic morphologies. Nanoscale friction experiments performed with different diamond tips illustrated a dependence of the coefficient of friction on tip radius, normal load, and sliding direction. Changes in the coefficient of friction are interpreted in terms of the applied normal load and varying contributions of the adhesion friction mechanism.

The tribological properties of ZnO thin film coated on an aluminium work piece by RF magnetron sputtering were studied as a function of deposition power, substrate coating temperature, heat treatment and rotation speed. The variation in the coefficient of friction of ZnO films produced under various levels of coating parameters and conditions were experimentally determined using a pin-on-disk tribometer. The results showed that with change in deposition conditions and heat treatment, there are significant microstructural changes in ZnO films, which affect the coefficient of friction. The hardness of the prepared films was also tested using a Vickers Hardness testing machine. There was a consistent and considerable decrease in the friction coefficient of the aluminium working piece after ZnO coating. It is found that the ZnO can be used as a low friction coating material for components working under oxidative and high temperature environments.

This article features with the enhancement of the static coefficient of friction by laser texturing the contact surfaces of tribological systems tested under dry friction conditions. The high-rate laser technology was applied for surface texturing at unprecedented processing rates, namely using powerful ultrashort pulses lasers in combination with ultrafast polygon-mirror based scan systems. The laser textured surfaces were analyzed by ion beam slope cutting and Raman measurements, showing a crystallographic disordering of the produced microscopic surface features. The laser induced self-organizing periodic surface structures as well as deterministic surface textures were tested regarding their tribological behavior. The highest static coefficient of friction was found of µ20 = 0.68 for a laser textured cross pattern that is 126% higher than for a fine grinded reference contact system. The line pattern was textured on a shaft-hub connection where the static coefficient of friction increased up to 75% that demonstrates the high potential of the technology for real-world applications.


The coefficient of friction of surfaces lubricated under boundary conditions may be profoundly affected by such factors as the degree of working of the substrate material, the nature of the oxide film and the degree of roughness of the surface. Experiments are described wherein the frictional behaviour of surfaces of stainless steel specimens prepared in various ways was compared. The worked surface layers in these particular experiments appear to increase the value of the coefficient of friction, but the effect of surface texture is of predominant importance. The effect of different oxide films is best illustrated by reference to pure aluminium, the surface of which has been oxidized under different environmental conditions. The constitution of the oxide film formed is modified with a consequent effect on boundary friction. When the friction of rough and smooth surfaces is compared, the difference in behaviour appears to be qualitative rather than quantitative.
