As aerostatic bearings are used in high-speed metal-cutting machines to increase machining accuracy, there is the need to improve their characteristics, including compliance, which is usually high. In practical applications, a significant reduction of bearing compliance is often necessary, sometimes down to zero and even negative values, to ensure automatic compensation of the elastic deformation in the machine technological system. A decrease in compliance leads to deterioration in the dynamic performance of the bearing, so it is necessary to develop new designs that meet the above requirements. This article considers an aerostatic bearing, in which decrease in compliance is ensured by the use of air throttling with elastic orifices. To ensure its stability, the principle of combined external throttling was applied, which can substantially improve the dynamics of conventional aerostatic bearings. A mathematical model of the elastic orifice deformation was developed, together with the flow rate performance calculation method. The method ensured full qualitative and satisfactory quantitative agreement with the experimental data. The model was used in the mathematical modeling of the aerostatic bearing movement. The article also proposes a method to calculate the static load capacity and compliance of a bearing, as well as a numerical method for fast computation of its dynamic performance, which allows for real-time multi-parameter optimization by the bearing dynamic performance criteria. The study showed that there is an optimal set of design parameters for which low, zero, and negative static compliance of the bearing is ensured, with the necessary stability margin, high speed, and the non-oscillatory nature of the transient processes.

Dynamic characteristics of the system have been given more and more attention so as to improve the retention and reliability of machining accuracy. Research has shown that dynamic performance of the feed drive mechanism has significant impact on the processing quality and efficiency of CNC. This paper mainly focuses on the DCG which realizes its motion on the basis of a pair of lead screw. The dynamic performance of the DCG was analyzed by the method of finite element analysis. DCG structure and the key design parameters of the rail joint surface have been studied to find out the influence on its dynamic characteristics. These researches provided a basis for the realization of the CNC feed motion of high-speed and high-precision. Besides, it is also possible to improve the overall performance of CNC machine tools.

Bearings for high-speed rotors are the key component of dental handpieces. The friction induced by conventional ball bearings restricts its speed and reduces its efficiency. In order to significantly improve the efficiency of dental handpieces, a mini-type cartridge that integrates a turbine and a spindle with radial aerostatic bearings and axial passive magnetic bearings has been ingeniously designed and realized. Around the rotating spindle, there is a high-pressured air film built up by a pair of radial aerostatic bearings, and magnet rings are applied to create repulsive forces to axially support the rotating spindle. The high-pressured air film comes from the specifically designed separable orifice restrictors, which can be easily and precisely manufactured. Frictionless bearing effect can be achieved by aerostatic principle, and the magnetic principle is applied to create large repulsive force against the axial working force. A tri-directional air inlet is designed to reduce radial loading force of a spindle during working. The modularized form of the magneto-aerostatic bearing allows it to be easily assembled and replaced in the very compact space of a mini-type cartridge. Through analytical simulations with fluid-dynamics software (CFD) and experiments, the magneto-aerostatic bearing is optimized to bring out efficient performance in its limited space. The experiments have verified that its noise level is 15dB lower than the conventional cartridge with ball bearings, and its startup air pressure is reduced from 0.4 bar to 0.1 bar. Under the same operation conditions, the newly developed cartridge with magneto-aerostatic bearings creates twice higher speed than that of the conventional one.

Abstract Control of thermally induced bearing loads remains an important but unsolved problem for precision, high-speed, metal cutting, machining spindles. Spindle dynamic performance, as well as spindle life, depends on bearing loads. Because these loads can change drastically with a change in process conditions, poor spindle dynamic performance, and dramatically reduced bearing life can result. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the feasibility of controlling bearing loads by controlling the heat generated by a thermal actuator placed around the housing of the spindle. A mathematical model of the open loop response of a laboratory prototype spindle is developed and validated. The model is then used to evaluate the closed loop performance. The results show that closed loop control of the bearing load is achievable in steady state and under bandwidth limited transient conditions. The proposed system has reasonable command authority when additional heat is required, however, it is possible for the system to lose control when the heater is required to “provide” negative heat. This situation can be mitigated by proper choice of initial preload. As expected, measurement noise limits the control gain but is not a limiting factor. More open loop tests are suggested to validate the model under a broader set of conditions. In addition, closed loop validation is suggested. However, based on results obtained it appears bearing load control is achievable by controlling the thermal field around the spindle.

The piezoelectrically-actuated stick-slip nanopositioning stage (PASSNS) has been applied extensively, and many designs of PASSNSs have been developed. The friction force between the stick-slip surfaces plays a critical role in successful movement of the stage, which influences the load capacity, dynamic performance, and positioning accuracy of the PASSNS. Toward solving the influence problems of friction force, this paper presents a novel stick-slip nanopositioning stage where the flexure hinge-based friction force adjusting unit was employed. Numerical analysis was conducted to estimate the static performance of the stage, a dynamic model was established, and simulation analysis was performed to study the dynamic performance of the stage. Further, a prototype was manufactured and a series of experiments were carried out to test the performance of the stage. The results show that the maximum forward and backward movement speeds of the stage are 1 and 0.7 mm/s, respectively, and the minimum forward and backward step displacements are approximately 11 and 12 nm, respectively. Compared to the step displacement under no working load, the forward and backward step displacements only increase by 6% and 8% with a working load of 20 g, respectively. And the load capacity of the PASSNS in the vertical direction is about 72 g. The experimental results confirm the feasibility of the proposed stage, and high accuracy, high speed, and good robustness to varying loads were achieved. These results demonstrate the great potential of the developed stage in many nanopositioning applications.

Gas-lubricated microbearings are widely applied in multiple fields due to their advantages of high-speed, low friction level and other features. The operating environment of microbearings is complex, and the difference of temperature has an important influence on their comprehensive performance. In this investigation, FEM (finite element method) is employed to investigate the static, dynamic and limit characteristics of microbearings lubricated by different kinds of gas at different temperatures. The results show that the rise of temperature leads to the decline of equivalent viscosity of gas, which weakens the load capacity of microbearings, and furthermore, affects the operating stability of microbearings. The dynamic performances of microbearings at different temperatures are very different, and the two dynamic limit characteristics are more sensitive to temperature when it changes.

The development of technology requires higher load capacity, rotating speed, power-weight ratio, lower vibration, and noise with respect to the gear transmission. The new type microsegment gear’s tooth profile curve is composed of many microsegments. Previous researches indicate that the microsegment gear has a good static performance, while the dynamic behavior of the microsegment gear has never been investigated. This paper will focus on the dynamic performance of the gear. The profile deviation between microsegment gear and involute gear is regarded as a displacement excitation in the proposed dynamic model. The numerical analysis for three cases is conducted and the results shows that, in low-speed and heavy-load, medium-speed and medium-load conditions, microsegment gear and involute gear both exhibit a good performance, while, in high-speed and heavy-load condition, microsegment gear has a better performance than that of involute gear. The influence of backlash on the dynamic performance is also studied. It is found that the variation of backlash does not change the type of motion, but the vibration amplitude and the stability of the motion are much affected. The main idea in this paper is supposed to provide a novel method for the precision grinding of the microsegment gear.

Due to urbanisation and the economic challenges of traffic, it is urgently necessary to develop an environmentally friendly virtual-track train with suitable speed, high load capacity and low construction cost in China. To guide the design and evaluate this train’s dynamic behaviour, a spatial-dynamics model has been developed based on the dynamics theory and tyre-road interaction. The proposed dynamics model comprises mechanical vehicle systems, traction and braking characteristics and tyre-road dynamic interactions. The coupling effects amongst those systems of virtual track train are derived theoretically for the first time. The nonlinear characteristics of the tyre are modelled by the transit tyre-magic formula with consideration of road irregularities. Based on a designed PID controller and the comprehensive dynamics model, the dynamic performance of the system can be revealed considering motion coupling effects and complicated excitations, especially under traction and braking conditions. The dynamic responses of whole virtual track train can be obtained by numerical integration under different conditions. The vibration characteristics of such train are assessed under running at a constant speed and during the traction/braking process. The results show that the vibrations of the vehicle system are significantly influenced by road irregularities, especially at high speed ranges. The motions and vibrations of different components are intensive coupled, which should not to be neglected in the dynamics assessment of the virtual track train. Besides, the dynamics model can also be applied to dynamics-related assessment (fatigue, strength and some damage conditions, et al.) and parameter optimisation of the virtual-track train.

High speed motorized spindle has become a key functional unit of high speed machine tools and effectively promotes the development of machine tool technology. The development of higher speed and more power puts forward the stricter requirement for the performance of motorized spindle, especially the dynamic performance which affects the machining accuracy, reliability, and production efficiency. To overcome the problems of ineffective loading and dynamic performance measurement of motorized spindle, a noncontact electromagnetic loading device is developed. The cutting load can be simulated by using electromagnetic force. A new method of measuring force by force sensors is presented, and the steady and transient loading force could be measured exactly. After the high speed machine spindle is tested, the frequency response curves of the spindle relative to machine table are collected at 0~12000 rpm; then the relationships between stiffness and speeds as well as between damping ratio and speeds are obtained. The result shows that not only the static and dynamic stiffness but also the damping ratio declined with the increase of speed.

In this paper, the static and dynamic performance of herringbone, step-pocket, taper-pocket, and taper-flat thrust bearings were numerically analyzed. Optimal values for the design parameters of each type of bearing were analyzed in terms of both maximum axial stiffness (kzz) and maximum ratio of axial stiffness to friction torque (kzz/T) and bearing performance for both cases was calculated. The optimal performance characteristics of these bearings were compared in terms of application to hard disk spindles. Step-pocket and taper-pocket thrust bearings are superior to herringbone and taper-flat thrust bearings with respect to both the maximum kkk and the maximum kzz/T conditions. It was found that the dams of thrust bearings with pockets play an important part in improving the hearing performance. It was made clear that the taper-pocket and the taper-flat thrust bearings have a much larger load capacity than the other two types of thrust bearings in the proximity of zero clearance.

ABSTRACTIn this paper, a rectangular aerostatic bearing with multiple supply holes is optimised with a multiobjective optimisation approach. The design variables taken into account are the supply holes position, their number and diameter, the supply pressure, while the objective functions are the load capacity, the air consumption and the stiffness and damping coefficients. A genetic algorithm is applied in order to find the Pareto set of solutions. The novelty with respect to other optimisations which can be found in literature is that number and location of the supply holes is completely free and not associated to a pre-defined scheme. A vector x associated with the supply holes location is introduced in the design parameters and given in input to the optimizer.
