Patching is one of the most common maintenance methods for potholes in roads. In order to improve the performance of cold-patching asphalt mixtures, an emulsified asphalt modified with waterborne epoxy resin was developed. Two waterborne epoxy resins and two curing agents were selected. The optimal experimental contents of the curing agents were obtained by measuring the compressive strength of the waterborne epoxy mortar (WEM) under different curing agent contents and curing period. The difference between the two waterborne epoxy resins was obtained by the flexural strength and stress–strain curves, which were measured by the modified bending test on the WEM. The evaluation method of the initial strength and forming strength of the waterborne epoxy emulsified asphalt mixture (WEEAM) was proposed by the experimental study of the compaction molding method and curing conditions. The high temperature performance, low temperature performance, and moisture susceptibility of the mixture were verified by comparing various kinds of WEEAM. The results show that using WEEAM as a road repair material has great advantages in improving pavement performance and road service levels.

In this study, the behavior of asphalt mixture was studied using non-destructive Acoustic Emission (AE) technique at low temperatures. For this purpose, two types of bitumen 60/70 and 85/100 with two types of limestone and Silica aggregate were used to construct asphalt mixtures. Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) was used to modify the bitumen in the dosage of 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% of bitumen weight. Semicircular bending test (SCB) under a steady increasing strain at a rate of 3mm/min was conducted at 0, -10-, and -20 °C. Two AE channels were used to record the Sinusoid output around the crack of SCB sample during crack growth. Analysis of the results obtained from this study using SPSS software indicates that there is a significant relationship between the failure energy of SCB samples and the number of impacts received from AEs. Furthermore, AE energy has a good agreement with the sample failure energy. According to the failure criterion, asphalt mixtures containing 85/100 bitumen modified by 1.0% of PPA and limestone aggregate exhibit more crack resistance among other compositions.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of air voids on the fracture properties of asphalt mixtures using SCB test in Discrete Element Method (DEM). Superpave and Coarse Matrix High Binder (CMHB) mixtures gradation were used to generate the percentages of aggregate, mastic, and air voids within the specimens. Aggregates and air voids were randomly generated for each asphalt mixture case. Model results illustrate that the crack initiation and propagation is controlled by the location of the aggregate particles and air voids in the mixture. Additionally, the absence of air voids above the tip of the notch increases the stiffness of the sample and increase its resistance to failure. The novelty of using DEM and the random generation technique for generating numerical specimens proved to be a useful approach in investigating the properties of the mastic, aggregate and interface as they relate to fracture of asphalt mixtures.

Based on the viscoelasticity theory and the data of creep test, Burgers model was established, which was used to study the viscoelastic property of SBR asphalt mixtures, and the viscoelastic constitutive relation was obtained. Using the finite element method, the temperature stresses field was calculated under the environmental conditions and the thermal stresses of SBR modified asphalt pavement was given at the last part of this paper. The study indicated that SBR modified asphalt mixtures have the advantage over common asphalt mixture in low-temperature performance.

Through a comparative study of high-temperature asphalt mixture performance by three methods: the standard rutting test, uniaxial penetration test on cylindrical specimens, and slant shear test, this paper displays that the shear elastic modulus gained by both cylindrical uniaxial penetration test and slant shear test can reflect well the properties of shear deformation of asphalt mixture under high temperature. However, there are certain limitations in these test methods.

To improve the low-temperature performance of RET (Reactive Elastomeric Terpolymer) modified asphalt mixture (RETM), polyurethane prepolymer (PUP) was used by wet process, ground waste rubber (GWR) and fibers were used by dry process. Tests of force ductility, bending beam rheometer (BBR), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), viscosity and multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) were conducted to study the effects of PUP on the performance of RET modified asphalt (RETA), and beam bending test was conducted to study the effects of GWR and fibers on the performance of RETM. Then, tests of beam bending, wheel tracking, Marshall immersion, freeze-thaw splitting, and economic analysis were further conducted to compare the performance and economy of RETM modified with optimum modifiers suggested. All modifiers improve the low-temperature performance of RETM. PUP content, the content and size of GWR and the content and type of fibers significantly affect the performance of RETA or RETM respectively. After analysis, 10% PUP, 2.1% 80 mesh GWR and 0.2% polyester (PE) fiber are considered as the optimum modifiers, respectively. Comparison results show that optimum modifiers variously improve the low-temperature performance, rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility of RETM, but they slightly reduced the economy of RETM. Comprehensive evaluation shows that 2.1% 80 mesh GWR and 10% PUP are better than 0.2% PE fiber.

This paper aims to explore the reasonability of an evaluation method on high temperature performance of asphalt mixture through a series of experiements. The first step of these experiements is to formulate specimens of different high-temperature performances by Gyratory Testing Machine which simulates the on-road pavement to the most extent , and then adopt triaxial dynamic compression test to compare and analyze high-temperature performances of these specimens. By introducing concepts and indicators such as validity, reliability, discrimination, this paper evaluates comprehensively the discrimination results of various compression test parameters on high-temperature performance of asphalt mixture. It concludes that the evaluation effect of compression stiffness modulus is best, followed by the slope of logarithmic creep curve and accumulated strain area, and the evaluation effect of final compression strain is comparatively poor. That provides an objective evaluation method on high temperature performances of asphalt mixtures.

As environmentally friendly materials, carbon black and bio-oil can be used as modifiers to effectively enhance the poor high-temperature and low-temperature performance of base asphalt and its mixture. Different carbon black and bio-oil contents and shear time were selected as the test influencing factors in this work. Based on the Box–Behnken design (BBD), carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt was prepared to perform the softening point, penetration, multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR), and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests. The response surface method (RSM) was used to analyze the test results. In addition, the base asphalt mixtures and the optimal performance carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt mixtures were formed for rutting and low-temperature splitting tests. The results show that incorporating carbon black can enhance the asphalt’s high-temperature performance by the test results of irrecoverable creep compliance (Jnr) and strain recovery rate (R). By contrast, the stiffness modulus (S) and creep rate (M) test results show that bio-oil can enhance the asphalt’s low-temperature performance. The quadratic function models between the performance indicators of carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt and the test influencing factors were established based on the RSM. The optimal performance modified asphalt mixture’s carbon black and bio-oil content was 15.05% and 9.631%, and the shear time was 62.667 min. It was revealed that the high-temperature stability and low-temperature crack resistance of the carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt mixture were better than that of the base asphalt mixture because of its higher dynamic stability (DS) and toughness. Therefore, carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt mixture can be used as a new type of choice for road construction materials, which is in line with green development.

AbstractThe quality of a road is affected by its correct design, the appropriate use of materials, the effects of the climate, and the technological discipline. The deformation properties and fatigue of asphalt layers are important for the design and assessment of semi-rigid and flexible pavements. The assessment of deformation properties is performed by means of a dynamic impact test and the fatigue life of a particular asphalt mixture. An evaluation of the fatigue life is based on decreases in resistance or increases in deformations in different binders and mixtures. The test methods for the design and control of pavement construction materials determine the basic conditions valid for flexible matter. The Two-Point Bending Test was used for determining the deformation characteristics and the fatigue of asphalt mixtures at the Department of Construction Management in Zilina.
