Extraction of tropical fruit juice using simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly technologies is gaining importance to produce high quality juices. Juice from pink-fleshed guava, pink-fleshed pomelo, and soursop was extracted using direct and indirect thermosonication methods by varying intensity, time, and temperature, and compared to those extracted using water bath incubation. Improvised models of juice yield, ascorbic acid, and total soluble solids responses were generated by eliminating insignificant model terms of the factors in full quadratic model using backward eliminating procedure. Main effects, 3D, or 4D plots for each response were developed based on factors that influenced the response. Results showed that the best extraction method for guava and pomelo juices were within indirect thermosonication method of 1 kW, 55 °C and 30 min, and 2.5 kW, 54 °C and 23 min, respectively. Direct thermosonication method at 10% amplitude, 55 °C for 2 to 10 min was more suitable for soursop juice. Thermosonicated extraction of tropical fruit juice can improve its juice yield, ascorbic acid content, and total soluble solids content.

Vegetable, due to higher neutraceutical component, are termed as protective food against various major and minor diseases. Scientific agro-techniques under optimum growing condition like temperature, relative humidity and light intensity, positively influence the qualitative and quantitative attributes of most of the vegetable crops including cherry tomato. It is one of potential vegetable crop, which is extensively utilized for table purpose and for preparing recipies in five star restaurants. Cherry tomato fetches higher prices in market due to good taste and higher nutrients, thus making qualitative attributes as an important factor to give higher returns to the farmers. Thus, this experiment was conducted to estimate the qualitative attributes in eighteen genotypes of cherry tomato grown under both open field and polyhouse conditions. The result of the study revealed that under open field condition, BRCT-30 was the best genotype with maximum value for lycopene content (6.62 mg 100-1 g FW) and β-carotene (2.30 mg 100-1 g FW), second maximum value for total soluble solids (7.85°Brix), third maximum value for reducing sugar and fourth highest position for ascorbic acid content (43.65 mg/100 g FW). Under polyhouse condition, the best genotype for quality parameters was BRCT-36 with maximum total soluble solids (10.81°Brix), lycopene (7.48 mg 100-1 g FW) and β-carotene (2.49 mg 100-1g FW) along with average range of values for ascorbic acid (72.36 mg 100-1 g FW) and titrable acidity (0.55 mg 100-1 g FW).

Pineapple is a food rich in vitamins, antioxidants and bromelain, but because it has high water content it becomes a highly perishable fruit. Hibiscus is a plant with flowers rich in phytochemicals that can be used as an ingredient to add value to processed products. The objective of this work was to prepare mixed jams using pineapple with hibiscus extract at different concentrations and to characterize the physicochemical properties of the jams produced. Experimental design was completely randomized with four replicates. The treatments consisted of three concentration levels of hibiscus extract (5, 10 and 15%) in pineapple jelly (50:50). Analyzed physical-chemical characteristics were: water content, water activity, ash, lipids, total sugars, reducing and non-reducing sugars, vitamin C, total titratable acidity, pH and total soluble solids. It was found that increasing concentrations of hibiscus in the formulations significantly influenced resulting jam composition. Increasing hibiscus concentration reduced the total sugars content and increased ascorbic acid content, acidity, total soluble solids and ash, as well as total anthocyanins and flavonoids contents. Among the jams produced, the formulation with 15% hibiscus was distinguished by its high content of ascorbic acid, flavonoids and anthocyanins. The addition of hibiscus to pineapple jelly improves the nutritional and functional value of the resulting jams, so it can be considered a high potential ingredient for this type of product.

Abstract The physicochemical characteristics of fruits of species native to the Atlantic Forest are little known, especially during ripening. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the interaction between ripening period and post-harvest storage of araçaúna and grumixama. Fruits were harvested at three ripening stages: green, partially ripe and ripe, according to the epicarp color, and separated into two groups, being stored for 2 and 48 hours. The following variables were evaluated: longitudinal (LD) and cross-sectional (CD) diameter, LD / CD ratio, fresh fruit mass (FM), pulp yield (PY), pH, soluble solids content (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS / TA ratio, and ascorbic acid content (AA). Araçaúna fruits stand out due to their high PY (74.43%), with low SS (2.07 ºBrix) and high TA (1.17% citric acid). However, harvesting fully ripe fruits increases SS by 21% and reduces TA by 32.5%. Grumixama fruits are slightly sweet (6.06 ºBrix), with low acidity (0.39% citric acid), high vitamin C content (206.94 mg of ascorbic acid/100g of pulp), and harvest must be performed when fruits are fully ripe. Both species have pulp of potential quality to be commercially exploited, especially for processing.

Five mangos cultivars (Mangifera indica L., `Palmer', `Keitt', `Spring Field', `Kent', and `Anderson') were harvested at the preclimacteric stage. Fruits were selected for study that were uniform and free of visual defects and stored for 18 days at 10 °C, 90% to 95 % RH. Fruits were evaluated every 3 days for pulp and peel color, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid content, and total and reducing sugars. Pulp and peel color parameters (lightness, hue, and chroma) were significantly different among cultivars. The soluble solids content, ascorbic acid, and starch content changed significantly during storage and were significantly different among cultivars. Total and reducing sugars content did not change significantly after 10 days of storage. Results of this study indicated that these five mango cultivars have good storage potential.

Analyze the effect of post-harvest degreening on quality parameters of Acid lime cv. Balaji. The present research was conducted at Post harvest laboratory of College of Horticulture, Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, during the year 2018-2019. Experiment was designated with two factorial completely randomized design with two factors viz., (A) Ethylene concentrations, (B) Number of pulsings were taken for test and executed with the objective: Effect of post-harvest degreening on quality parameters of Acid lime cv. Balaji. The Acid lime cv. Balaji fruits were harvested and subjected to degreening treatments for one day. The treated Acid lime fruits were stored for sixteen days at ambient conditions. Acid lime fruits picked randomly from treated lot and evaluated for Physiological loss in weight %, Peel thickness mm, Fruit firmness Kg/cm2, Total soluble solids °Bx, Titratable acidity %, Ascorbic acid mg/100 g, Juice recovery % at four days interval by adopting the respective methods. Among all the quality parameters there were gradual increase in Total soluble solids (TSS), Juice recovery, Physiological loss in weight (PLW) and there were decreased trend in Titratable acidity, Peel thickness, Fruit firmness and Ascorbic acid content. Ethylene @ 15 ppm proved the better results for the above parameters. Among different number of pulsings, 1 pulsing in 24 hours @ 24 hrs interval and 2 pulsings in 24 hr @ 12 hrs interval was best.

Micronutrients, particularly Iron (Fe) and Zinc (Zn), play a vital role in the growth and development of plants due to their catalytic effect on many metabolic processes. However, the biochemical responses to the applied micronutrients vary with cultivars and their species. A screening experiment was conducted during 2020 to know the antioxidants enzyme activities and biochemical constituents in response to iron and zinc fertilization by six capsicum hybrids grown in grow bags under shade net conditions. The experiment consists of three treatments viz., Control (No Fe & Zn), 50 kg FeSO4 and 37.5 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 as a basal soil application with six capsicum hybrids viz., Indra, Priyanka, Inspiration, Massilia, Bachata, and Local green. Leaf samples of the capsicum hybrids were collected at Fruiting stage and analysed for antioxidant enzyme activities. The fruit samples were used for quantifying the biochemical constituents. The results revealed that, application of ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) and zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) to capsicum hybrids increased the biochemical constituents in fruits and the antioxidant enzyme activities in leaves. Out of the six hybrids tested, Indra possessed higher ascorbic acid content (9.20 mg 100 g-1 fresh weight), acidity (6.0), and total soluble solids (6.10 Brix) in the fruits, which was followed by Inspiration and Bachata. The superoxide dismutase (6.70 unit’s mg-1 protein) and peroxidase (6.90 unit’s g-1 fresh weight) activities were also higher with the same genotypes. The biochemical constituents and antioxidant  enzyme  response to Zn addition was better than Fe.  There was 13.2, 10.9 and 9.5 per cent increase in titratable acidity, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid content in the fruits of Indra due to ZnSO4 application.The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering revealed that Indra is highly responsive to Zn and Fe fertilization, while the local green showed very less response. The rest of the genotypes such as Inspiration, Bachata, Massilia, and Priyanka, are medium responsive for Zn and Fe fertilization.

ABSTRACT Mineral nutrients have important role in plant metabolism, acting on specific vital metabolic pathways for the cell. Among the nutrients, we highlight silicon (Si), for promoting growth, improving post-harvest quality and plant productivity, as well as being able to induce resistance to pest and disease. In this sense, this study aimed to evaluate the productivity and post-harvest quality of strawberry fruits cultivars Aromas and Albion cultivated in organic system with four doses of foliar applications of SiO2 in pre-harvest (0, 5, 10, 15 g L-1), and refrigerated storage (8 days under refrigeration and 1 day at room temperature). The valuated traits were: mass loss, fruit mass, productivity, fruit firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, total phenolics, total anthocyanins, ascorbic acid and soluble solids titratable acidity ratio. The cultivar Aromas presented higher productivity per area (33.05 t ha-1), and more fruits per plot (479.42); however, higher average fruit mass was obtained in cultivar Albion (24.44 g), presenting better-quality fruits for fresh market. Soluble solids content, SS/TA ratio and ascorbic acid content were not influenced by silicon doses, however, refrigeration during 8 days and 1 day at room temperature provided reduction of fruit firmness, titratable acidity and, ascorbic acid content and increased soluble solids content and SS/TA ratio. Refrigeration attenuated significant reductions in anthocyanin content and, in addition, foliar silicon application promoted higher levels of anthocyanins in the fruits of both strawberry cultivars, increasing with the applied dose. The application of silicon was also efficient in maintaining fruit firmness of both cultivars.

A study was made of the effects of rootstock on the composition of Washington Navel oranges grown on eight rootstocks and Valencia Late oranges grown on three rootstocks in several regions during six seasons. Among the three major commercial rootstocks, trifoliate orange and rough lemon exerted contrasting influences on orange composition, while sweet orange occupied an intermediate position. The effects of rootstock were similar on both scion varieties but were more marked with Washington Navel oranges. Trifoliate orange stock tended to give high yields of juice which was high in acidity and soluble solids content but low in ascorbic acid content and in bitter taste when canned. Rough lemon stock tended to give low yields of juice which was lam- in acidity and soluble solids content but high in ascorbic acid content and in bitter taste. A positive correlation was demonstrated between the bitter taste of canned juices and the concentrations of limonoid bitter principles in the peel of Washington Navel oranges, and in the peel and seeds of Valencia Late oranges. Trifoliate orange stock promoted the disappearance of bitter principles from all parts of the fruit with advancing maturity, but rough lemon stock retarded this process. Tangelo and Cleopatra mandarin stocks resembled trifoliate orange in their effects on orange composition. while sweet lime, Kusaie lime, and East Indian lime stocks resembled rough lemon.

A seriguela é um fruto tropical que desponta entre as espécies do gênero Spondias como de melhor qualidade e aceitação pelo consumidor, contudo a sua vida útil in natura é muito curta sendo necessário o uso de tecnologias para a manutenção de suas propriedades qualitativas após a colheita. Assim, o presente trabalho objetiva avaliar os efeitos da radiação no espectro UV-C sobre o controle do amadurecimento e as propriedades qualitativas durante o armazenamento refrigerado. O delineamento experimental adotado foi inteiramente casualizado arranjados em um esquema fatorial 3x5 (três doses de radiação UV-C: 0, 2 e 4 kJ/m2) e (cinco tempos de avaliação: 0, 3, 6, 9 e 12 dias) com cinco repetições. Os frutos foram mantidos a 25°C e avaliados quanto a perda de massa fresca, firmeza da polpa, coloração da casca, sólidos solúveis totais, acidez total titulável, pH, teor de ácido ascórbico, compostos fenólicos e atividade antioxidante. A utilização da radiação atrasou o processo de maturação principalmente sobre a manutenção da cor amarela ao longo dos dias, além de menor degradação dos sólidos solúveis, teor de vitamina C, ácidos orgânicos e dos compostos bioativos. A dose de 2 kJ/m2 manteve a qualidade comercial dos frutos por até 9 dias.Palavras-chave: Spondias purpurea L., fruto tropical, características qualitativas, compostos bioativos. DELAY MATURATION AND POST-HARVEST QUALITY OF SERIGUELA EXPOSED BY ULTRAVIOLET IRRADIATION ABSTRACT:The seriguela is a tropical fruit that emerges among the species of the genus Spondias as of better quality and acceptance by the consumer, however its useful life in natura is very short, being necessary the use of technologies for the maintenance of its qualitative properties after the harvest. Thus, the present work aims to evaluate the effects of radiation in the UV-C spectrum on maturation control and qualitative properties during refrigerated storage. The experimental design was completely randomized, arranged in a 3x5 factorial scheme (three doses of UV-C radiation: 0, 2 and 4 kJ/m2) and (five evaluation times: 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 days) with five replicates. The fruits were kept at 25 ° C and evaluated for loss of fresh mass, pulp firmness, peel color, total soluble solids, titratable total acidity, pH, ascorbic acid content, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. The use of the radiation delayed the maturation process mainly on the maintenance of the yellow color throughout the days, besides lower degradation of the soluble solids, content of vitamin C, organic acids and the bioactive compounds. Hybrid breeding of watermelon has led to the formation of high-yielding varieties. The objectives of the research were to determine the performance of hybrid watermelon of the Indonesian Tropical Fruit Research Institute (ITFRI) collection and to evaluate the superiority of each hybrid. The research has been conducted at Sumani Experimental Garden, ITFRI, Solok, West Sumatera, from April to July 2016. The material used consisted of 19 cross combinations. The data from this descriptive study were presented in the form of averages and pictures. The results showed that the hybrids that were tested showed diversity in size, fruit skin color, flesh color, skin thickness and fruit sweetness. Hybrids with three excellent characters, i.e. medium fruit weight, high total soluble solids (TSS) value, and moderate rind thickness, were not yet obtained. Hybrids that had the superiority in term of sweet taste and shelf life were BT1 × SGP, BT4 × BT4P, BT5 × BT4, BT6 × SGP and SGP × BT6. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui keragaan hibrida semangka koleksi Balitbu Tropika dan untuk mengevaluasi keunggulan masing-masing hibrida Penelitian dilaksanakan di Kebun Percobaan Sumani, Balitbu Tropika, Solok, Sumatera Barat, dari bulan April sampai dengan Juli 2016. Materi yang digunakan terdiri dari 19 kombinasi persilangan. Data hasil penelitian deskriptif ini ditampilkan dalam bentuk rataan dan gambar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hibrida yang diuji memiliki keragaman dalam ukuran, warna kulit buah, warna daging buah, ketebalan kulit buah dan kemanisan. Belum ditemukan hibrida yang memiliki tiga karakter unggul, yang terdiri dari bobot buah sedang, total padatan terlarut (total soluble solid) tinggi, dan kulit buah agak tebal. Hibrida yang memiliki keunggulan berupa rasa manis dan tahan simpan adalah BT1 × SGP, BT4 × BT4P, BT5 × BT4, BT6 × SGP dan SGP × BT6. Kata kunci: hibrida, keragaan, semangka, total padatan terlarut
