Sea-level monitoring is important for the safety of coastal cities and analysis of ocean and climate. Sea levels can be estimated based using the global navigation satellite system–interferometry reflectometry (GNSS–IR). The frequency in a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) arc has been found to be related to the height between the GNSS antenna and reflecting surface, which is called reflector height (RH, h). The height variation of the reflecting surface causes an error, and this error is the most significant error in the GNSS–IR sea-level retrieval. The key to the correction of height variation error lies in the determination of the RH variation rate ḣ. The classical correction method determines ḣ based on tide analysis of a coarse RH series over a longer time period. Therefore, ḣ inherits errors in coarse RH series, which contains significant bias during a storm surge, and correcting this requires data accumulation. This study proposes a correction method of height variation error based on just one SNR arc based on wavelet analysis and least-square estimation. First, using wavelet analysis, instantaneous frequencies are extracted in one SNR arc; these frequencies are then converted to RH series. Second, using least-square estimation, h and ḣ are conjointly solved based on the RH series from wavelet analysis. Data of GNSS site HKQT located in Hong Kong, China, during a period of time that includes Typhoon Hato were used. The root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) of retrievals were 21.5 cm for L1, 9.5 cm for L2P, 9.3 cm for L2C, and 7.6 cm for L5 of GPS; 16.8 cm for L1C, 14.1 cm for L1P, 12.6 cm for L2C, and 10.7 cm for L2P of GLONASS; 15.7 cm for L1, 11.2 cm for L5, 12.2 cm for L7, and 9.6 cm for L8 of Galileo. Results showed this method can correct the height variation error based on just one SNR arc, can avoid the inheritance of errors, and can be used during periods of storm surge.

The present study was designed to investigate whether near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy with minimal sample processing could be a suitable technique to rapidly measure histamine levels in raw and processed tuna fish. Calibration models based on orthogonal partial least square regression (OPLSR) were built to predict histamine in the range 10–1000 mg kg−1 using the 1000–2500 nm NIR spectra of artificially-contaminated fish. The two models were then validated using a new set of naturally contaminated samples in which histamine content was determined by conventional high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. As for calibration results, coefficient of determination (r2) > 0.98, root mean square of estimation (RMSEE) ≤ 5 mg kg−1 and root mean square of cross-validation (RMSECV) ≤ 6 mg kg−1 were achieved. Both models were optimal also in the validation stage, showing r2 values > 0.97, root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) ≤ 10 mg kg−1 and relative range error (RER) ≥ 25, with better results showed by the model for processed fish. The promising results achieved suggest NIR spectroscopy as an implemental analytical solution in fish industries and markets to effectively determine histamine amounts.

A novel method on frequency measurement based on improved TLS-ESPRIT (total least square estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques) is proposed in this paper with the research on fundamental frequency measurement in power system. TLS-ESPRIT is belong to subspace estimation in modern signal process. Noise is included in signal model, so it is independent on noise. But the same multi-poles cannot be taken when signal is in noise and based on TLS-ESPRIT. Multiple poles restoring is presented to take the true poles accurately. It is revealed that fundamental frequency is detected accurately in harmonics, interharmonics, noise and frequency fluctuations and better anti-noise ability in particular better adaptiveness on time varying signal in amplitude by simulation results.

In this paper, we propose a new method to improve the position measurement accuracy for Laguerre-Gaussian beams on a quadrant detector (QD). First, the error effects of the detector diameter and the gap size are taken into account, and the position error compensation factor is introduced into the conventional formula. Then, in order to reduce the number of parameters, the concept of effective radius is proposed. Thus, a new analytical expression is obtained with a best fit using the least square method. It is verified by simulation that this approach can reduce the maximum error by 97.4% when the beam radius is 0.95 mm; meanwhile, the root mean square errors under different radii are all less than 0.004 mm. The results of simulation show that the new method could effectively improve the accuracy of the QD measurement for different radii. Therefore, the new method would have a good prospect in the engineering practice of beam position measurements.

Abstract. In the Lesser Antilles, coastal inundations from hurricane-induced storm surges pose a great threat to lives, properties and ecosystems. Assessing current and future storm surge hazards with sufficient spatial resolution is of primary interest to help coastal planners and decision makers develop mitigation and adaptation measures. Here, we use wave–current numerical models and statistical methods to investigate worst case scenarios and 100-year surge levels for the case study of Martinique under present climate or considering a potential sea level rise. Results confirm that the wave setup plays a major role in the Lesser Antilles, where the narrow island shelf impedes the piling-up of large amounts of wind-driven water on the shoreline during extreme events. The radiation stress gradients thus contribute significantly to the total surge – up to 100 % in some cases. The nonlinear interactions of sea level rise (SLR) with bathymetry and topography are generally found to be relatively small in Martinique but can reach several tens of centimeters in low-lying areas where the inundation extent is strongly enhanced compared to present conditions. These findings further emphasize the importance of waves for developing operational storm surge warning systems in the Lesser Antilles and encourage caution when using static methods to assess the impact of sea level rise on storm surge hazard.

Features analysis is an important task which can significantly affect the performance of automatic bacteria colony picking. Unstructured environments also affect the automatic colony screening. This paper presents a novel approach for adaptive colony segmentation in unstructured environments by treating the detected peaks of intensity histograms as a morphological feature of images. In order to avoid disturbing peaks, an entropy based mean shift filter is introduced to smooth images as a preprocessing step. The relevance and importance of these features can be determined in an improved support vector machine classifier using unascertained least square estimation. Experimental results show that the proposed unascertained least square support vector machine (ULSSVM) has better recognition accuracy than the other state-of-the-art techniques, and its training process takes less time than most of the traditional approaches presented in this paper.
