With the rapid development of smart grid technologies, communication systems are further integrated in the existing power grids. The real-time capability and reliability of the power applications are receiving increasing concerns. Thus, it is important to measure the end-to-end delay in communication systems. The network calculus theory has been widely applied in the communication delay measuring tasks. However, for better operation performance of power systems, most power applications require synchronous data communication, in which the network calculus theory cannot be directly applied. In this paper, we expand the network calculus theory such that it can be used to analyze the communication delay for power applications in smart grids. The problem of communication delay calculation for the synchronization system is converted into a maximum path problem in graph theory. Finally, our theoretical results are compared with the experimental ones obtained with the network simulation software EstiNet. The simulation results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

The renewed quest for situational awareness in power systems has brought about the use of digital signal processing of power system measurements, and the transmission of such data to control centres via communication networks. At the control centres, power system stability algorithms are executed to provide monitoring, protection, and control in order to prevent blackouts. This can be achieved by upgrading the existing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems through the deployment of newly proposed power system synchrophasor-based applications for Wide Area Monitoring, Protection, and Control (WAMPAC). However, this can only be done when there is a complete understanding of the methods and technologies associated with the communication network, message structure, and formats required. This paper presents an analysis of the IEEE C37.118 synchrophasor message framework, message formats, and data communication of synchrophasor measurements from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for WAMPAC schemes in smart grids. A newly designed lab-scale testbed is implemented and used in the practical experimentation relating to this paper. Synchrophasor measurements from the PMUs are captured using a network protocol analyzer software-Wireshark, and the compliance of the synchrophasor message structures and formats captured was compared to the specifications defined in the IEEE C37.118 synchrophasor standard.

This chapter describes the upcoming technology for electrical power systems that gives the appropriate solution for the integration of the distributed energy resources. In this chapter, different categories of smart grids have been classified, and the advantages, weakness, and opportunities of each one, are given in addition to determining its own operating conditions. Micro-grids are the most common kind of smart grid. It has been classified under different criteria, such as architecture with different topology (connected mode, island mode, etc.) and demand criteria (simple micro grids, multi-DG, utility) and by capacity into simple micro-grid, corporate micro-grid, and independent micro-grid, and by AC/DC type to DC micro-grids, AC micro-grids, Hybrid micro-grids. Finally, most familiar Micro-grid components have been discussed such as an energy management system along with several types of control and communication systems in addition to the economic study of a micro-grids.

Smart grid, as an intelligent power generation, distribution, and control system, needs various communication systems to meet its requirements. The ability to communicate seamlessly across multiple networks and domains is an open issue which is yet to be adequately addressed in smart grid architectures. In this paper, we present a framework for end-to-end interoperability in home and building area networks within smart grids. 6LoWPAN and the compact application protocol are utilized to facilitate the use of IPv6 and Zigbee application profiles such as Zigbee smart energy for network and application layer interoperability, respectively. A differential service medium access control scheme enables end-to-end connectivity between 802.15.4 and IP networks while providing quality of service guarantees for Zigbee traffic over Wi-Fi. We also address several issues including interference mitigation, load scheduling, and security and propose solutions to them.

Abstract This article discusses the structure of an information system, the mathematical and information models of electric power systems. Currently, the major application areas include system relaying data communication systems and automation, automated dispatching and technological management of electric power facilities, as well as computer-aided calculation of energy resources. Automatic control of excitation (ARV) synchronous machines is one of the most effective ways to ensure the stability of power systems. However, the variety of possible options and modes even in a single grid pose significant obstacles to the development of the best means of ensuring sustainability. Thus, the use of ARVs to ensure stability in some cases may not be sufficient. Therefore, there is a need to develop an information system based on a mathematical model.

With the rapid development of computer technology, electronic technology, and control technology, communication-based avionics systems can provide greater potential for the improvement of aircraft combat capabilities. Moreover, during the flight, passengers have an increasing demand for space communications. How to provide passengers with a communication-based aerospace electronic system that is indistinguishable from the ground during the flight is a problem that needs to be solved urgently. The research on the forward design method of this system has been highly valued by experts at home and abroad. This article is a communication-based forward design method for avionics systems. Based on the development of aerospace data communication technology, this article discusses the advantages of the application of the CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) protocol in the design of aerospace electronic communication systems. This research designs the technical scheme of the entire aerospace communication electronic system and refers to the relevant CCSDS protocol to complete the design of the distributor’s fast transmission telemetry package and the distributor’s slow transmission telemetry package. This article introduces the two existing architectures of the integrated avionics system, compares and analyzes them, and then elaborates the integrated avionics system architecture based on trusted computing and the trust chain transfer mechanism. The experimental results show that the method designed in this paper uses the NBSP basic protocol in an aeronautical communication environment with a nesting depth of 2 s. When the data transmission delay is 2 s, the NBSP scheme is 0.9 and the NERON scheme is 0.4. This shows that the design method of this study is able to meet the requirements of the system and technical indicators.

The recent advances in computing technologies and the increasing availability of large amounts of data in smart grids and smart cities are generating new research opportunities in the application of Machine Learning (ML) for improving the observability and efficiency of modern power grids. However, as the number and diversity of ML techniques increase, questions arise about their performance and applicability, and on the most suitable ML method depending on the specific application. Trying to answer these questions, this manuscript presents a systematic review of the state-of-the-art studies implementing ML techniques in the context of power systems, with a specific focus on the analysis of power flows, power quality, photovoltaic systems, intelligent transportation, and load forecasting. The survey investigates, for each of the selected topics, the most recent and promising ML techniques proposed by the literature, by highlighting their main characteristics and relevant results. The review revealed that, when compared to traditional approaches, ML algorithms can handle massive quantities of data with high dimensionality, by allowing the identification of hidden characteristics of (even) complex systems. In particular, even though very different techniques can be used for each application, hybrid models generally show better performances when compared to single ML-based models.
