This article presents the application of a new educational thermodynamic software called MOLECULARDISORDER, based on graphical user interfaces created in Matlab® to promote critical thinking in youth engineering students, by means of the energy and entropy balance application in different systems. Statistics of the results obtained by the youth students are shown to determine the influence of the software in a regular course in thermodynamics to promote critical thinking. Two case studies were done by the students, where parameters such as temperature of the fluid and metal surfaces, pressure of the system, mass of the fluid and solid, volume, and velocity of the fluid are used to obtain output variables such as enthalpy, entropy, changes in entropy, entropy production, and energy transfer in the chosen system. Four cognitive skills were considered to evaluate the cognitive competencies of interpreting, arguing and proposing, and interacting with the different graphical user interfaces; these cognitive skills (CS) were argumentative claim (CS1), modeling (CS2), interpreting data/information (CS3), and organization (CS4). Student´s T-test was used to compare the degree of difficulty of each criterion. The case studies were evaluated first without using the software and then with the use of the software to determine the significant effect of the software quantitatively. A population of 130 youth students was taken to perform the statistical analysis with a level of significance of 5%. With the help of the software, the students obtained an improvement when performing case study 1 since the p-value obtained was 0.03, indicating that there are significant differences between the results before and after taking the software. The overall averages of the grades for case study 1 had an increase after using the software from 3.74 to 4.04. The overall averages for case study 2 were also higher after taking the software from 3.44 to 3.75.

Transversal competences such as sustainability or critical thinking have become more important in the last decades in University teaching. The objective of this article is to assess the effectiveness of debate as a teaching method capable of fostering such competences in engineering students. To do this, a debate activity has been held facing two reasonable positions: Sustainable Development versus Degrowth. The research methodology consisted of performing this activity in the classroom (with 13 students in this particular case study), and conducting some tests before and after the debate that served as feedback to assess the effectiveness of the debate on the learning process. This feedback is composed of different documents, including a pre-post test, a specific survey about the debate, a pre-post knowledge survey and the Student Evaluation of Educational Quality (SEEQ) survey. A methodology for the organization of the debate is proposed and the answers of the students to these feedback documents are analyzed. As it can be inferred from the different surveys, the debate has been an efficient learning tool to acquire knowledge and to develop sustainability and critical thinking competences.

AbstractExtract-Transform-Load (ETL) flows are used to extract data, transform it, and load it into data warehouses (DWs). The dominating ETL tools use graphical user interfaces (GUIs) where users must manually place steps/components on a canvas and manually connect them using lines. This provides an easy to understand overview of the ETL flow but can also be rather tedious and require much trivial work for simple things. We, therefore, challenge this approach and propose to develop ETL flows by writing code. To make the programming easy, we proposed the Python-based ETL framework in 2009. We have extended significantly since the original release, and in this paper, we present an up-to-date overview of the framework. offers commonly used functionality for programmatic ETL development and enables the user to efficiently create effective ETL flows with the full power of programming. Each dimension is represented by a dimension object that manages the underlying table or tables in the case of a snowflaked dimension. Thus, filling a slowly changing or snowflaked dimension only requires a single method call per row as performs all of the required lookups, insertions, and assignment of surrogate keys. Similarly to dimensions, fact tables are each represented by a fact table object. Our latest addition to , Drawn Table Testing (DTT), simplifies testing ETL flows by making it easy to define both preconditions (i.e., the state of the database before the ETL flow is run) and postconditions (i.e., the expected state after the ETL flow has run) into a test. DTT can also be used to test ETL flows created in other ETL tools. also provides a set of commonly used functions for transforming rows, classes that help users parallelize their ETL flows using simple abstractions, and editor support for working with DTT. We present an evaluation that shows that provides high programmer productivity and that the created ETL flows have good run-time performance. Last, we present a case study from a company using in production and consider some of the lessons we learned during the development of as an open source framework.

Abstract: Poor oral hygiene as well as bad diet may affect teeth and oral health, resulting in tooth disordes such as caries. Consumption of fruits rich of fibers and water can accelerate tooth cleansing, therefore, debris can be reduced and tooth caries can be avoided. Papaya (Carica papaya) contains vitamins, minerals, and enzymes for digestion as well as fibers and water. This study was aimed to determine the effect of Californian and Hawaiian papaya consumption on reduction of debris index among children. This was an experimental study with a one-shot case study pre-experimental design and a pretest-postest approach. In this study, there were 32 respondents of third grade students of Sekolah Dasar Inpres Kaiwatu Manado (elementary school) with an age range of 8-10 years obtained by using total sampling technique. The results of t-tests in debris index before and after Hawaiian and Californian papaya consumption showed significant P-values (P <0.0001). The average reduction of debris index after Californian papaya consumption was 1.31 and after Hawaiian papaya consumption was 1.71. The independent T-test showed a P value of 0.010 (P <0.05). Conclusion: Consumption of Hawaiian and Californian papayas could reduce debris index among children. Moreover, consumption of Hawaiian papaya was more effective in reducing debris index compared to Califonian papaya.Keywords: Californian papaya, Hawaiian papaya, debris index Abstrak: Kebersihan gigi dan mulut serta pola konsumsi makanan yang kurang baik dapat memengaruhi kesehatan gigi dan mulut, salah satunya yaitu kerusakan pada gigi seperti karies gigi. Pepaya (Carica papaya) mengandung vitamin, mineral, dan enzim yang berguna untuk pencernaan, serta serat dan air. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh konsumsi buah pepaya California dan pepaya Hawai terhadap penurunan indeks debris pada anak. Jenis penelitian ialah eksperimental dengan rancangan pra-eksperimental one-shot case study pendekatan pretest-posttest. Responden penelitian yaitu 32 siswa kelas 3 SD Inpres Kaiwatu Manado berusia 8-10 tahun, diperoleh berdasarkan total sampling. Hasil penelitian indeks debris sebelum dan sesudah mengonsumsi pepaya California dan pepaya Hawai mendapatkan nilai signifikansi hasil uji-t berpasangan keduanya masing-masing dengan P < 0,0001. Rerata penurunan indeks debris setelah mengonsumsi pepaya California 1,31 dan setelah mengon-sumsi pepaya Hawai 1,71. Hasil uji-t tidak berpasangan mendapatkan nilai P = 0,010 (<0,05). Simpulan: Konsumsi pepaya California dan pepaya Hawai dapat menurunkan indeks karies secara bermakna pada anak. Selain itu, konsumsi pepaya Hawai lebih berpengaruh terhadap penurunan indeks karies dibandingkan konsumsi pepaya California.Kata kunci: pepaya California, pepaya Hawai, indeks debris

Currently, the minerals’ extractive industries are going through a deep technological modernization, with a characteristic expansion of international exchange of knowledge and know-how. The unification of the equipment used in open-pit and underground mining, the global spread of advanced mining technologies increases the importance of the linguistic competencies of mining engineers. At the same time, the specifics of training mining engineers is the uniqueness of situations in the extraction and processing of mineral resources, which actualizes the case study method in the training of mining engineers. The paper provides a description of the term «case study» and its basic characteristics and principles of application. The content is based on the authors’ own experience of mining engineers in case studies while teaching English. Some examples of case studies for mining engineering students studying English are presented. The paper notes the effectiveness of implementing case study method and shows its benefits for introducing in the process of mining engineers training. In addition to listing positive effects of the method for developing skills necessary for competitive specialists such as critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, collaboration, etc., the authors mention possible problems that are likely to occur while using this method as well.

Estimating from the steady declining rate of engineering students in Malaysia, the country is predicted to be short of 236,000 engineers and technical personnel to achieve its 2020 Mission. Hence, it has built the first technical MARA Junior Science College that introduced engineering to lower secondary students. However, there is yet a study on whether or not it helps the students to increase their interests in engineering. Therefore, in this paper, a survey has been conducted to first and foremost investigate the technical students’ interests in engineering as well as finding out the reasoning from those who are not interested in engineering. After that, a half day engineering program is introduced with a measurement on the interest in engineering before and after the intervention is held. Finally, the survey studies which field of engineering the students are most interested in. The results show that, before the program is introduced, only 8.47% of the technical students have shown high interests in engineering field with only 7.5% female students are interested in engineering compared to 18.42% for male students. After the program is introduced, as high as 33.05% students rated their interest in engineering field as ‘most interested’, with 39.47% in male students and 30% in female students. It proves that an engineering event is crucial in increasing students’ interests in engineering. It also concludes that EE is the most favourite field of engineering with percentage score of 38.98%, while EP being the least.

A single case study of a student was elaborated upon to illustrate the process of change through education. By choosing to study a graduate who had minimal background preparation and minimal interest in entrepreneurship before the education programme, the researchers have attempted to address some of the limits of change possible through entrepreneurship education. A structured interview was used to provide the initial ‘before and after’ account, after which extended and repeated probing was employed as the primary tool for exploring the personal development process involved. The case history was then used as a basis for developing a model of personal development required to make the transition from non-entrepreneur to entrepreneur. This case study was further intended to illustrate some of the relative merits of conducting in-depth case analysis over survey research in the domain of entrepreneurship education. Without in-depth case studies of individuals it is hard to know how much entrepreneurship programmes can change individuals. The possibility remains that entrepreneurship programmes just take potential entrepreneurs and give them a few more tools. Case studies of the change process can provide educators with a more complete understanding not only of what changes are possible within the confines of an education programme, but also of what programme interventions are more likely to produce the desired changes.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the overall critical thinking and the development of each of the cognitive skills or attributes that compose it in students of the undergraduate program in nursing through the creation of concept maps in two Brazilian teaching institutions. Method: Before-and-after experimental study, randomized, performed in two universities of two Brazilian regions, with a sample of 21 subjects at the A school and 56 at the B school. Data were collected through sociodemographic questionnaire and the California Critical Thinking Skills Test. Intervention consisted in the creation of four concept maps. Results: Scores measured for overall critical thinking do not differed between the groups of both schools; however, positive aspects among them were found for skills of evaluation, induction, and inference. Conclusion: We perceived validity as a facilitating teaching strategy of the use of concept maps in several aspects.

A course at the University of Toronto encourages engineering students to analyze how science isconveyed in the popular media through a variety of contexts. An analysis of the language and rhetoric of these communicative acts provides on entry point into how science is framed, while the discipline of performance studies, which identifies and analyzes the mechanisms with which we present our messages and ourselves, provides another useful tool through which to understand the motivations and associated strategies behind scientific communication. This teaching practice paper presents three case studies of scientific press conferences used in the course: NASA’s 2010 astrobiology event, the Higgs Boson announcement in 2012, and Virgin Galactic’s 2014 SpaceShipTwo crash. These three case studies illustrate how the act of communicating science within public spaces should be navigated with an awareness of the intended message and the way that this message is conveyed and perceived. Each case study includes a summary of observations on the event (generated and shared through class discussions), and prompts that will enable theeffective instruction of these and other case studies.

ABSTRACT Objective: to compare the levels of general critical thinking and the skills or cognitive attributes involved, individually measured during the training of undergraduate nursing students, through a teaching intervention using Concept Maps. Method: an experimental, randomized, double-blind study with before and after design, conducted with 77 undergraduate nursing students. The research subjects were randomized to the control (38) and experiment (39) groups and both participated in a course on Advanced Life Support in Cardiology for a period of five weeks, when the intervention was the construction of four concept maps. Data collection took place through a sociodemographic questionnaire and the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) before and after the course and after in order to measure critical thinking. Results: sociodemographic data confirmed that the groups had similar characteristics. After the intervention using the concept maps, the mean pre-and post-test general critical thinking averages were classified as moderate and showed no statistically significant difference. The t-test for paired samples showed a significantly increased Evaluation skill score (p-value of 0.022) in the posttest for the experiment group. Conclusion: the use of the teaching strategy with construction of the concept maps performed well in the promotion of General Critical Thinking and its abilities. Teaching strategies based on constructivist theories should be encouraged as they play a significant role in improving student learning and critical thinking.

The Case Study has become a pedagogical vehicle ofchoice in helping engineering students to gain perspective on the multidisciplinary realities of design. What once were termed ‘war stories’ have evolved to a level where case studies are available and downloadable on all manner of topics. For the fundamental knowledge-based issues of engineering, example questions have commonly been created to help the student manoeuvre through all manner of possible combinations of application. The case study is not however fabricated, and relies on the reporting and documentation of a real design or engineering product development. In recent years many of these case studies have been related to ethics and communication, but very few have been related to ongoing product development and issues of Industrial Design. This is not surprising since the creation of such case studies is time consuming, and design is often a ‘messy’ process in which few companies would be keen to expose their failures along the way. Nevertheless case studies are a vital part of Engineering Design education and offer excellent potential for the development of the pedagogy vital to the dynamic formulation of Engineering Design Education. This paper references three design projects undertaken professionally by the author as an Industrial Designer working with predominantly engineering based companies. The aim is to identify critical aspects of these projects that could be used as lessons, perhaps, but not necessarily, as case studies, but to be incorporated into engineering design education.
