Electric vehicles (EVs) have great potential for solving problems that threaten sustainability. However, the market penetration of EVs is difficult and slow. From the perspective of consumer resistance, this study proposes a theoretical model to investigate the impacts of two growing personal values in the Chinese context (materialism and ecological consciousness) on consumers’ purchase intention of EVs. The research model was empirically examined with online survey data from 511 general Chinese consumers. The results indicate that consumer resistance is a crucial element hindering EV consumption and that materialism will promote consumer resistance by exerting a positive impact on perceived costs and a negative impact on perceived benefits of purchasing EVs, while ecological consciousness can effectively prevent consumers from developing a resistant attitude by increasing perceived benefits and decreasing perceived costs of purchasing EVs. Furthermore, the mediation tests suggest that value perceptions (perceived costs and perceived benefits) fully mediate the effects of materialism and ecological consciousness on consumer resistance and that resistant attitude fully mediates the relationships between value perceptions and purchase intention of EVs. Theoretically, this study contributes to the literature by investigating the influence of materialism and ecological consciousness on EV consumption and verifying the underlying mechanism linking them. Practically, the findings of this study can provide valuable insights for promoting the market penetration of EVs.

One of the major contributors to the relatively high levels of Greenhouse gas emissions in South Africa is road transportation. Electric vehicles (EVs) have been proposed as one of the solutions to this problem. However, the use of EVs is very limited in South Africa. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), the study investigated the predictors of the intention to purchase EVs in South Africa. The study extended the TPB by adding three individual constructs (environmental consciousness, anticipated guilt and response efficacy) and two situational constructs (perceived benefits and perceived barriers). The cross-sectional survey method was used for data collection in a quantitative study. Descriptive statistics and structural equation modelling were used for data analysis. The results showed significant positive relationships between two TPB constructs (attitude and perceived behavioral control) and EV purchase intention. In addition, the effects of the environmental consciousness, response efficacy, perceived benefits and barriers are significant. Theoretically, the study extended the TPB to develop a model of EV purchase intention from the South African perspective. Empirically, the study added to the body of literature on the determinants of EV purchase intention. Practically, recommendations to improve the purchase of EVs are suggested.

Remanufacturing is an environmentally-friendly and energy-saving production concept and manufacturing technology, but it is low in China's consumer level. Therefore, it is especially important to explore the factors that Chinese consumers purchase remanufactured products. This paper uses empirical methods to analyze the impact of perceived value on the purchase intention of remanufactured products and the adjustment of consumer psychological variables. Studies have shown that: (1) the lack of perceived gains and the exaggeration of perceived gains and losses have a negative impact on purchase intention. (2) The degree of price sensitivity and risk avoidance play a regulatory role between perceived value and purchase intention. The higher the price sensitivity and risk aversion, the more obvious the effect of perceived profit on purchasing intention. Finally, management proposals for the development of the remanufacturing market have been proposed for governments and remanufacturing companies.

The main purpose of this article was to determine the impact on the equilibrium of the local transport system from privileging EVs by permitting them to use bus lanes. The study used two sets of data: information on infrastructure and traffic management; and information on the recorded road network loads and traffic volumes generated by a given shopping centre—the E. Leclerc shopping centre (an important traffic generator within the city of Łódź, Poland). These sets were then used to develop a microsimulation traffic model for the shopping centre and the associated effects on the localised transport system. The model was constructed by means of the PTV Vissim software tool. An initial simulation was conducted that formed a basis for subsequent scenarios (in total, 17 simulations were performed). On the basis of the conducted analyses, it was established that—for the researched part of the transport system—privileging the still rather uncommon battery electric vehicles (BEVs) engendered a marginal deterioration of traffic conditions. At the same time, allowing BEVs to use bus lanes within the chosen research area had no negative impact on bus journey times.

PurposeThis research extends the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and aims to study the underlying factors that influence Chinese consumers' purchase intentions towards green products. The conceptual model encompasses four elements (subjective norms, perceived behaviour control, moral norms and attitude) and one consumer response (purchase intention).Design/methodology/approachThe current research employs a questionnaire survey and two experiments. In Study 1, the hypotheses were tested using structural equation modelling with 485 consumers in China. Study 2 employed a single-factor, two-condition (morally engaged vs control), between-subject design.FindingsThe findings reveal that the morally extended TPB framework is more applicable in predicting Chinese consumers' green purchase intentions than the original TPB model. Attitude plays the most significant role in predicting purchase intentions, and moral norms prove to be a mediator of the relationship between the original construct of subjective norms and purchase intentions. The findings further revealed that moral norms comprise the underlying mechanism of the relationship between subjective norms and attitude.Originality/valueThis study therefore expands the TPB theory by including moral norms. Moreover, it contributes to the literature by clarifying the direct, indirect and total effects of each TPB element on the purchase intentions towards green products. Finally, managerial implications are given.

The emergence of electric vehicles (EV) is inevitable. In Indonesia, EVs in various forms have been introduced to the market. However, the adoption of EV in the Indonesian market is still negligible. The purpose of this paper is to make an early prediction of consumers’ purchase intentions towards EV, particularly battery electric vehicles (BEV), in Indonesia. A multi-criteria decision model based on the analytic network process (ANP) approach has been proposed. There are several main criteria used to explain the purchase/don’t purchase decision towards BEV, namely functionality, emotion, cost of ownership, and car identity. Through a series of pairwise comparisons involving a number of target customers of senior level professionals, their purchase intentions towards BEV have been predicted. The results of this study show that these early wealthy, highly educated consumers have a moderate preference towards purchasing BEV. Their intention to purchase is influenced by criteria as follows: emotion (42.64%), functionality (25.94%), car identity (21.87%), and cost of ownership (9.55%). Even though the invited target customers do not represent the mass market, the findings of this study could help BEV makers in Indonesia choose who the early adopters are and find the BEV product-market fit in order to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.

Transportation is extremely important in contributing to the life quality development of urban areas. However, it has influenced negatively on individuals and the environment due to carbon emissions and gases. Worldwide, organizations and countries are exploring a solution and have developed Electric Vehicles (EVs) as the best possible solution. Electric vehicles emit no exhaust emissions and are powered by batteries. The adoption rate of EVs in rich countries is increasing year after year, while consumer adoption intention of EVs in poor countries is quite low, particularly in Malaysia. The ownership percentage of Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEs) in Malaysia is 93 percent, placing it near the top of the globe, but EV adoption is just about 3.5 percent. Consumer awareness of EVs is quite low, which is why consumer adoption intentions toward EVs are not increasing. Malaysia is the world's 26th highest emitter of carbon and greenhouse gases (GHG). This study will assist in identifying the characteristics that can maximize consumer interest in EVs and will be beneficial to the government and industry in developing the market as stated in the Paris accord and achieving the Carbon Neutral Nation 2050 aim. The study will go through the motivators that lead consumers to purchase EVs. These characteristics will provide transportation sectors insights on bridging the demand and supply of sustainable vehicles.

The increasing penetration rate of electric vehicles, associated with a growing charging demand, could induce a negative impact on the electric grid, such as higher peak power demand. To support the electric grid, and to anticipate those peaks, a growing interest exists for forecasting the day-ahead charging demand of electric vehicles. This paper proposes the enhancement of a state-of-the-art deep neural network to forecast the day-ahead charging demand of electric vehicles with a time resolution of 15 min. In particular, new features have been added on the neural network in order to improve the forecasting. The forecaster is applied on an important use case of a local charging site of a hospital. The results show that the mean-absolute error (MAE) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) are respectively reduced by 28.8% and 19.22% thanks to the use of calendar and weather features. The main achievement of this research is the possibility to forecast a high stochastic aggregated EV charging demand on a day-ahead horizon with a MAE lower than 1 kW.
