Companies are confronted with increasingly demanding environments, including globalization, technologization, intergenerationality, and crises such as the coronavirus pandemic. To accept uncertainties as a challenge and to recognize opportunities for development, well-educated and resilient founders are needed who can foster innovation and sustainable development within society and the economy. The majority of today’s entrepreneurs have an academic background. Hence, institutions for higher education need to provide comprehensive educational offerings and support initiatives to train and sensitize future entrepreneurs. Therefore, since 2013, agile teaching formats have been developed in our project at a Bavarian university of applied sciences. In two stages, we founded a limited company for hands-on experimentation with entrepreneurship and also conceptualized an elective course and an annual founders’ night. Based on a theoretical model and continuous teaching evaluations, we adjusted the individual modules to suit the target group. The objective is to promote the acquisition of key competencies and exert a positive influence on the startup quotient in the region. There are six startups by students who can be traced back to our project. This indicates that a target-group-oriented educational program encourages motivation and awareness of entrepreneurial thinking and action among students.

This chapter describes a hands-on educational approach to teach Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), including activities like problem analysis, programming, testing and debugging. Students are given autonomy to propose and evaluate different solutions, using adequate tools and following best practices. In parallel, key competencies like team management, project planning, costing and time scheduling, are imbibed in students to prepare them to become deployable automation engineers. To illustrate the proposed approach, we elaborate on the experience gained from teaching an elective course to undergraduate engineering students, in terms of learning outcomes, methodology, assessment and feedback. This course was centered on the Node Red platform (based on Node.js), using hardware devices like Arduino Uno, Nano and Raspberry Pi. Sensors commonly used and protocols like Modbus RTU/TCP, OPC UA, MQTT are discussed in the framework of common industrial applications.

University dropout is a politically and economically important factor. While a number of studies address this issue cross-sectionally by analyzing different cohorts, or retrospectively via questionnaires, few of them are truly longitudinal and focus on the individual as the unit of interest. In contrast to these studies, an individual differences perspective is adopted in the present paper. For this purpose, a hands-on introduction to a recently proposed structural equation (SEM) approach to discrete-time survival analysis is provided ( Muthén & Masyn, 2005 ). In a next step, a prospective study with N = 1096 students, observed across four semesters, is introduced. As expected, average university grade proved to be an important predictor of future dropout, while high-school grade-point average (GPA) yielded no incremental predictive validity but was completely mediated by university grade. Accounting for unobserved heterogeneity, three latent classes could be identified with differential predictor-criterion relations, suggesting the need to pay closer attention to the composition of the student population.

The aim of this study was to translate the Multidimensional Workaholism Scale (MWS) into Chinese and then test its reliability and validity among full-time Chinese employees in two stages. In Study 1 ( N = 220), the MWS was translated and exploratory factor analysis was conducted resulting in a four-factor solution consistent with the original MWS: motivational, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral. In Study 2 ( N = 425), confirmatory factor analysis showed that a four-factor, bifactor model was the best fit for the data. Configural, metric, and scalar invariance models were tested which demonstrated that the Chinese version of the MWS did not differ across gender, age, and job position groups. Finally, workaholism and engagement were related and distinct from one another, and they correlated with emotional exhaustion, work-family conflict and life well-being uniquely. This study indicated that the Chinese version of the MWS is a valid and reliable tool for Chinese employees, and this has important practical implications for the individual health and career development of Chinese working adults.

Three and five-layered silicon carbide-based composites containing 0, 5, and 15 wt.% of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were prepared with the aim to obtain a sufficiently high electrical conductivity in the surface layer suitable for electric discharge machining (EDM). The layer sequence in the asymmetric three-layered composites was SiC/SiC-5GNPs/SiC-15GNPs, while in the symmetric five-layered composite, the order of layers was SiC-15GNPs/SiC-5GNPs/SiC/SiC-5GNPs/SiC-15GNPs. The layered samples were prepared by rapid hot-pressing (RHP) applying various pressures, and it was shown that for the preparation of dense 3- or 5-layered SiC/GNPs composites, at least 30 MPa of the applied load was required during sintering. The electrical conductivity of 3-layered and 5-layered composites increased significantly with increasing sintering pressure when measured on the SiC surface layer containing 15 wt.% of GNPs. The increasing GNPs content had a positive influence on the electrical conductivity of individual layers, while their instrumented hardness and elastic modulus decreased. The scratch tests confirmed that the materials consisted of well-defined layers with straight interfaces without any delamination, which suggests good adhesion between the individual layers.

This paper describes an elective course in mechatronic systems engineering that is project based and team-oriented with hands-on learning. Working in small teams, students add electronic components to a mobile robot base and write the programs required to make the robot perform a series of tasks. Although the application of mobile robots as an educational tool in a mechatronics course is becoming the norm at many universities, the task based organization of the Queen’s mechatronics course is believed to have a number of novel features. The paper will review the pedagogy of the course, including aspects of the student workload, the interplay between teams, and the task based approach to marking and organization of the laboratories.

Objective To analyze the association between each element of a hands-on intervention in childbirth and the incidence of obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS). Study Design We conducted a prospective, interventional quality improvement project and implemented a care bundle with five elements at an obstetric department in Denmark with 3,000 deliveries annually. We aimed at reducing the incidence of OASIS. In the preintervention period, 355 vaginally delivering nulliparous women were included. Similarly, 1,622 nulliparous women were included in the intervention period. The association of each element with the outcome was estimated using a regression analysis. Results The incidence of OASIS went down from 7.0 to 3.4% among nulliparous women delivering vaginally (p = 0.003; relative risk = 0.48; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.30–0.76). Number needed to treat was 28. Logistic regression analysis showed that using hand on the head of the child significantly reduced the risk of OASIS (odds ratio = 0.28; 95% CI: 0.14–0.58). Conclusion Using a quality improvement framework, we documented the individual elements of the intervention. Hand on the infant's head reduced the risk of OASIS.

Small business training can facilitate business growth. The authors show that a ‘hands-on’ approach can have a direct impact on a business owner's current situation. They consider this in relation to the problem of being unable to find the right staff, demonstrating that a programme such as the one they describe enables learning and addresses the lack of time and resources faced by many small business owner-managers. Such programmes also accommodate the style, pace and circumstances of the individual learner. This has a number of implications for the delivery of training to small business owner-managers.

We detail an educational program implemented at Toin University of Yokohama in which lab and workshop courses on automated mechanics, from basics to applications, are offered consecutively during the first three undergraduate years. Engineering is a discipline concerned with practical real-world problems, but students rarely have the chance to gain enough practical experience to effectively understanding engineering. At our department, first- to third-year students may take several hands-on courses for fabricating machines – first-year students build an automatic mobile machine, second-year students write computer programs to control the position of a robot, and some third-year students design and fabricate an entire robot from the bottom up. An elective course on robot fabrication enables students to choose individual theme. Students experience failures and discover better ways by trial and error through these processes.

The aim of the study is to clarify the mineral composition and determine the conditions of the formation of the quartz-hubnerite veins of the Inkur stockwork tungsten deposit (the Dzhidinsky ore field, South-Western Transbaikalia). The research methods include a mineralogical and petrographic description of the ore quartz-hubnerite veins; an electron microprobe analysis of the mineral associations; thermometry, cryometry, and Raman spectroscopy of the individual fluid inclusions in quartz, fluorite, hubnerite, and muscovite. The mineralogical and petrographic studies has made it possible to clarify the mineral composition of the Inkur deposit ores and determine the mineral paragenesis formation sequence. The fluid inclusion studies have established that the ore deposition was occurring in the relatively low-salinity (~5.7–14.6 wt. % eq. NaCl) homogeneous solutions due to a decrease of the temperature. The study of the salt composition of the solutions has identified Ca chloride as a prevailing component, with NaCl, KCl, and MgCl as admixtures. CO2 and N2 have been identified in the gas phase of inclusions. Two stages of mineral formation have been defined: high-temperature (≥300 °С) and low-temperature (≥2.00–300 °С). The conducted studies allow qualitative estimation of the chemical composition of the ore-forming solutions. It has been established that one of the main factors of the hubnerite deposition is a temperature factor.

This article describes a project-based learning pedagogical approach to learning legal concepts that transforms these concepts into managerial propositions for students, especially for computer information systems and business administration majors.  This pedagogy provides opportunities and experiences for students to become sensitive enough to real-world topics that they can posit a question to a legal professional regarding cyber business laws.  The hands-on project-based learning method is an engaging and interactive way to learn the information in a group environment, and then it requires the student to demonstrate knowledge at the individual level.  The data collected for this study suggests that the project-based learning style is effective for learning legal concepts.
