In the field of powertrain engineering, longstanding knowledge was gained for testing conventional vehicle powertrains. The hitherto used test strategies here were more focused on the subsystems of the powertrain than on the powertrain as an integrated system. Through the electrification of the powertrain, the topology and the range of functions have changed. This leads to new challenges for the validation and requires not only adjustments of the test strategies for electric vehicle powertrains but establish and develop integrative tests for the powertrain as an integrated system in order to meet the increased complexity. This paper presents a method to develop a holistic test strategy for a hybrid and electrical vehicle powertrain. In order to avoid misunderstandings of the used terms, it is necessary to create a standard understanding of them. Therefore, a nomenclature is defined and described. Furthermore, a definition of a holistic test strategy is provided. The focus of this present study is on the powertrain and not on its single subsystems. Subsequently, the four steps of the method are introduced and the current results are presented. Finally, a new developed test element within the holistic test strategy is introduced. The findings of this study support the integrative testing for powertrains.

Aufbauend auf einer zeitlichen und inhaltlichen Abgrenzung im Produktentstehungsprozess (PEP) stellt der Fachbeitrag verschiedene Probleme vor, die bei der Serienreifmachung allgemein und in der Nutzfahrzeug-Industrie im Speziellen auftreten. Anschließend werden Herausforderungen abgeleitet, die es bei der Entwicklung eines Konzepts für die Serienreifmachung in der Nutzfahrzeug-Industrie zu bewältigen gilt.   Based on a definition of the process of attaining production-readiness in the context of the product development process, this article presents several problems that occur during the process of attaining production-readiness in general and specifically in the commercial vehicle industry. Furthermore, a selection of challenges is derived from the presented problems and an approach to cope with these challenges is suggested.

Jennex (2005) used an expert panel to generate the definition of knowledge management as the practice of selectively applying knowledge from previous experiences of decision-making to current and future decision making activities with the express purpose of improving the organization’s effectiveness. This was a consensus definition from the editorial review board that tells us what we are trying to do with knowledge management. However, knowledge management is being applied in multinational, multicultural organizations and we are seeing issues in effectively implementing knowledge management and transferring knowledge in global and/or multicultural environments. Chan and Chau (2005) discuss a failure of knowledge management that was in part caused by organizational culture differences between the home office (Hong Kong) and the main work location (Shanghai). Jennex (2006) discusses Year 2000, Y2K, knowledge sharing projects that were not as successful as expected due to cultural and context issues. These projects involved organizations that performed the same functions just in different nations, however, problems caused by culture and context were not expected. Other research in review with the International Journal of Knowledge Management explores issues of culture with respect to social capital and implementing knowledge management. None of these are far reaching studies that we can generalize issues from, but they do provide anecdotal and case study support that culture and context are issues we need to address.

Virtual prototyping technology as a key technology for agile manufacturing can deal with multidisciplinary knowledge across different fields. In the complex product development process, the exchange between heterogeneous data in heterogeneous environment is a universal problem encountered, which increases the complexity of collaborative parallel design of virtual prototype. Taking the product models as carriers and the different function requirements as clues, the knowledge structure and expression of product information in various fields was studied. By adopting component object model technology, direct geometry access technology, behavioural modeling technology and parametric design thinking, the interaction among tools in various function units was realized, and the effective integration of information and function in multi-fields was accomplished, the parameter-driven virtual prototype architecture of complex product based on the integration of information and function was created. The feasibility of this architecture has been verified by the actual engineering. This plan provides an effective way to carry out virtual prototype projects for enterprise.

For more than 40 years the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools has been focused on the description of the geometry of products. More recently, CAD tools have evolved in tools to support the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), which are more oriented to support the management aspects of the product development process than the design process itself. Recently, it has been introduced a new design method that adopts a top-down approach, which starts from the definition of a Functional MockUp (FMU) allowing to simulate the overall behavior and the use of the concept level before the detailed design. This method is closer to the typical logical sequence of design, where the designer has at first an overall view of a system and of its sub-components, and then he takes care of the details. This method is supported by commercial tools, as the LMS-Amesim suite, or by open-source software tools based on the Modelica language. This is an open-source language allowing designers to integrate and describe at functional level several aspects of a system, including mechanical, electrical, thermal, hydraulic, control and others allowing to simulate all together. The paper analyses this methodological approach and presents some applications where some systems are designed using a functional modeling approach.

The present study deals with the integration between a Thermo-Photo-Voltaic generator (TPV) and an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) named here TORCIS (Thermo-photo-voltaic Organic Rankine Cycle Integrated System). The investigated TORCIS system is suitable for CHP applications, such as residential and tertiary sector users. The aim of the research project on this innovative system is the complete definition of the components design and the pre-prototyping characterization of the system, covering all the unresolved issues. This paper shows the results of a preliminary thermodynamic analysis of the system. More in details, TPV is a system to convert into electric energy the radiation emitted from an artificial heat source (i.e., combustion of fuel) by the use of photovoltaic cells; in this system, the produced electric power is strictly connected to the thermal one, as their ratio is almost constant and cannot be changed without severe loss in performance; the coupling between TPV and ORC allows to overcome this limitation and to realize a cogenerative system which can be regulated with a large degree of freedom changing the electric-to-thermal power ratio. The paper presents and discusses the TORCIS achievable performance, highlighting its potential in the field of distributed generation and cogenerative systems.

Time and resource constraints should be taken into account in software testing activities, and thus optimizing the test suite is fundamental in the development process. In this context, the test case selection aims to eliminate redundant or unnecessary test data, which is crucial for the definition of test strategies. This paper presents a systematic review on the test case selection conducted through a selection of 449 articles published in leading journals and conferences in Computer Science. We addressed the state-of-art by collecting and comparing existing evidence on the methods used in the different software domains and the methods used to evaluate the test case selection. Our study identified 32 papers that met the research objectives, which featured 18 different selection methods and were evaluated through 71 case studies. The most commonly reported methods are adaptive random testing, genetic algorithms and greedy algorithm. Most approaches rely on heuristics, such as diversity of test cases and code or model coverage. This paper also discusses the key concepts and approaches, areas of application and evaluation metrics inherent to the methods of test case selection available in the literature.

The huge amount of online conversations that arises from the new means of communication between users, if analyzed and capitalized, is an important resource for companies and brands alike. Thus, a fundamental tool for the management of the relationship with customers such as CRM seems to be exceeded. The concept of a Social CRM platform was born with the objective of filling the gap between brand and customers connected to various social networks, allowing both parties to achieve tangible benefits from active participation. The key objective of this research involves the implementation of a Social CRM system, which is not yet present on the automotive market. The work starts through the identification and implementation of an experimental prototype that can define and highlight a methodological and technological best practice in the integration of heterogeneous components of an information system composed of independent software and continues with the definition of an integrated system that allows innovative Business Intelligence activities.

This paper firstly discussed the definition of knowledge integration in the field of product development and proposed the multidimensional knowledge integration model which could be the guidance during the implementation of knowledge integration. Subsequently the framework of knowledge integration is presented, three layer (the enterprise distributes resources layer, enterprise managed knowledge layer and product development process layer) in the framework are explanted respectively. The ontology is introduced to provide the semantic fundament for the framework. The structure of integrative ontology is studied and constructed with OWL(Ontology Web Language). The ontology plays an important role in knowledge organization and knowledge service and it’s the core part of the whole framework. At last a prototype system based on the previous techniques is developed and basically fulfills knowledge integration in product development process.

With the aim to have risk mitigation for people and first responders, active remote sensing standoff detection is a fruitful technology, both in case of accidental (natural or incidental) or intentional dispersion in the environment of volatile chemical substances. Nowadays, several laser-based methodologies could be put in place to perform extensive areal monitoring. The present study regards the proposal for a new system architecture derived from the integration of a low-cost laser-based network of detectors for pollutants interfaced with a more sophisticated layout mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) able to identify the nature and the amount of a release. With this system set up, the drone will be activated by the alarm triggered by the laser-based network when anomalies are detected. The area will be explored by the drone with a more accurate set of sensors for identification to validate the detection of the network of Lidar systems and to sample the substance in the focus zone for subsequent analysis. In this work, methodologies and requirements for the standoff detection and the identification features chosen for this integrated system are described. The work aims at the definition of a new approach to the problem through the integration of different technologies and tools in the operative field experiments. Some preliminary results in support of the suitability of the integration hypothesis proposed are presented. This study gives rise to an integrated system to be furtherly tested in a real environment.

The main motive for the integration of management systems should be to increase production efficiency by reducing losses due to overlapping resources of individual management systems running in parallel. In addition, by integrating, organisations can ensure the definition of unambiguous responsibilities and prevent problems at process interfaces as well as conflicting goals of individual management systems. The integration of management systems into one comprehensive and the implementation of an integrated system into the overall management of the organization would help to more effectively manage the risks associated with their business processes, resources and thus ensure prevention of these risks.
