The results of self-etching self-adhesive flowable composite application for primary molars fissure sealing in children

Relevance. The use of light-cure sealants and flowable composites for fissure sealing in children is difficult due to the complexity of the procedure. The research aimed to study the efficiency of self-etching self-adhesive flowable composite for fissure sealing in primary molars in children.Materials and methods. The Local Ethical Committee permission and written informed voluntary consents from the parents were obtained before the study. Non-invasive fissure sealing with self-etching self-adhesive flowable composite (Constic, DMG, Germany) was performed in 48 primary molars in 48 children aged 2-5 years (mean 41.2 ± 1.3 months). After 6, 12, 18 and 24 months, the sealant’s retention (%) and frequency (%) of occlusal caries development, and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. The significance of the difference was assessed by the Student’s t-test.Results. After 6 and 12 months, complete sealant’s retention was revealed in 75.0% (CI 61.2-85.1%) and 60.4% (CI 46.3-73.0%) molars, p > 0.05; it decreased to 27.1% (CI 16.6-41.0%) and 18.7% (CI 10.2-31.9%), p > 0.05, after 18 and 24 months. Complete loss of the sealant was noted in 8.3-18.7% cases. The first caries lesion (2.1%, CI 0.4-10.9%) on the surface with the lost sealant was revealed after 12 months, after 24 months – 4.2% (CI 1.1-14.0%).Conclusions. In primary molars after non-invasive fissure sealing with self-etching self-adhesive flowable composite, complete loss of the sealant was from 8.3% to 18.7% after 6-24 months post-op, partial loss was from 8.3% to 31.3%. Occlusal caries was revealed in 6.3% cases after the sealant loss.

Relevance. A glass ionomer cement (GIC) is the material for primary teeth fissure sealing in children. The research aimed to study the comparative effectiveness of two GIC pit and fissure sealants in primary molars.Materials and methods. Sixty-one children aged 2-5 years (mean 26.99 ± 0.55 months) participated in the study after obtaining the Local Ethical Committee’s permission and the parents’ informed consents. Non-invasive fissure sealing in primary molars was performed according to split-mouth design with two GIC: Fujy-9, GC, Japan (109 teeth, FV-group) and Polyakrilin, TehnoDent, Russia (106 teeth, PV-group). Follow-ups were provided after 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. Complete retention, partial retention or complete loss (%) of the sealants and the frequency (%) of fissure caries development were calculated. The chi-square criterion was used to assess the significance of the differences between the groups at p-value < 0.05.Results. In 6 and 12 months, all the cases demonstrated complete or partial sealant retention and the absence of pit and fissure caries. The following results were found after 24 months: complete GIC retention in 8.6% of molars in FV-group and 1.9% in PV-group, (p < 0.05), partial retention – 78.8% and 79.0% (p > 0.05) respectively, complete loss – 6.7% and 11.4% respectively (p > 0,05). Fissure carious lesions were found only after 18 and 24 months in 2.8% cases in FV-group and 3.8% cases in PV-group, p > 0,05.Conclusions. Both studied GICs for non-invasive primary molar fissure sealing were equally highly effective for pit and fissure caries prevention in children. Annual follow-ups in children are necessary for GIC sealant repair.

Background The migraine brain is believed to have altered cortical excitability compared to controls and between migraine cycle phases. Our aim was to evaluate post-activation excitability through post-movement beta event related synchronization (PMBS) in sensorimotor cortices with and without sensory discrimination. Subjects and methods We recorded EEG of 41 migraine patients and 31 healthy controls on three different days with classification of days in relation to migraine phases. During each recording, subjects performed one motor and one sensorimotor task with the right wrist. Controls and migraine patients in the interictal phase were compared with repeated measures (R-) ANOVA and two sample Student’s t-test. Migraine phases were compared to the interictal phase with R-ANOVA and paired Student’s t-test. Results The difference between PMBS at the contralateral and ipsilateral sensorimotor cortex was altered throughout the migraine cycle. Compared to the interictal phase, we found decreased PMBS at the ipsilateral sensorimotor cortex in the ictal phase and increased PMBS in the preictal phase. Lower ictal PMBS was found in bilateral sensorimotor cortices in patients with right side headache predominance. Conclusion The cyclic changes of PMBS in migraine patients may indicate that a dysfunction in deactivation and interhemispheric inhibition of the sensorimotor cortex is involved in the migraine attack cascade.

Basing on the assumption that the basic foundations of the natural science knowledge which should be developed in the process of mastering the disciplines of the educational program should be laid for the successful formation of General professional and universal competencies of future specialists in the field of aquaculture, the research goal was chosen: to study the degree of formation of the natural science knowledge among students of the specialty "Water bioresources and aquaculture”. In the written survey took part future specialists in the field of aquaculture of the first year of study (N0=60) and fourth-year students (N1=38). For statistical assessment of the results were used Fisher's φ-test and Student's t-test (p ≤ 0.01). The results showed that there were no significant differences between basic knowledge in the field of natural Sciences for the 1st-yaer and 4th-year students. The significant differences were identified in students' definition of the difference between natural science and parascientific fields of knowledge, but the best result was shown by 1st-year students. It can be concluded that pedagogical technologies used for the formation of General professional and universal competencies need to be modernized, and further research and development of new methodological approaches to teaching disciplines related to basic natural science knowledge will be promising.

AIM: The aim of this study was to verify two different types of interfaces in Morse taper connection implants, relating the mechanical resistance to a loosening torque that is required to separate or move the prosthetic abutment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten Morse taper connection implants and their respective abutments were divided into two groups (n = 5), DH (double hexagon) interface and OI (octagonal implant) interface. A standard insertion of implants was performed in a stainless steel base, where each abutment received a sequence of two consecutive tightening torques at a 10-minute interval, followed by a loosening torque, which was measured using a digital torque gauge. The Student’s t-test with a 5% significance level was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The results showed a statistically significant difference in the loosening torque values compared with DH torque values (p < 0.05). However, the difference between tightening and loosening torque values was not statistically significant in the OI group (p = 0.465). CONCLUSION: The study concluded that there was a difference in the torque required to loosen the abutment screws between the DH group and the OI group, with the latter showing better results.

Objectives: To study mean platelet volume (MPV) in acute appendicitis andits correlation with leukocyte count. Study Design: Case control study Place and Duration:Department of Surgery, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro/Hyderabadfrom January 2013 to February 2014. Subjects and Methods: Subjects with clinical suspicionof acute appendicitis were selected according inclusion and exclusion criteria. A sample of 49acute appendicitis patients and 37 controls were studied. The Blood samples were collected insodium citrate vacutainers and processed on Sysmex KX 21 analyzers. The main analysis wasthe comparison of the difference of MPV between acute appendicitis and controls. Data wasanalyzed on SPSS version 21.0 by student’s t-test, Chi-square test and Pearson’s correlation (r)was used to evaluate association of MPV with platelet counts and leukocytes. A p-value of ≤0.05was taken significant. Results: The mean platelet volume and leukocytes were significantlyelevated in patients with acute appendicitis. MPV and leukocytosis in controls and cases werenoted as 7.93±2.1 vs. 9.10±2.9fl (p=0.0001) and 6980±120 vs. 13980±340 μL-1 respectively.MPV was positively correlated with leukocytosis (r=0.419) (p=0.0001), while Platelets showeda negative correlation. Conclusion: Elevated MPV and leukocytosis are observed in acuteappendicitis. MPV may be exploited for clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis but in a properclinical context along with leukocytosis.

Differences in the emphasis placed on type and production traits between bulls used in official herds and those used in owner/sampler (O/S) herds registered at the Quebec Dairy Herd Analysis Service were calculated. For 543 881 Holsteins and 41 955 Ayrshires, service records (containing the cow and service sire identification and the service sire's production and type proofs) were used to calculate selection differentials (SD) for the bulls used in official and O/S herds for each 6-mo period between 1980 and 1983. An SD was calculated as the difference between a bull's proofs in a service record and the average proof of all bulls available in the same period. Selection differential means and variances were calculated within each herd, and the average and variance of these means were determined for each 6-mo period. Differences in SD between bulls used in official and O/S herds were determined using the Student's t-test for differences between means. Within Holsteins, SD for final class, general appearance, fore udder, rear udder, size and stature of bulls used in official herds were significantly higher in O/S herds. Within Ayrshires, no significant differences in type-trait SD were found because a very small number of prominent bulls were used extensively throughout both official and O/S Ayrshire herds. Although not significant, in all periods production trait SD tended to be higher for bulls used in O/S herds than for bulls used in official herds for both Holsteins and Ayrshires. ABSTRACT The present study aimed at assessing the influence of physical properties associated with soil structure on the Srelative index. Two soil conditions under Ficus carica L. cultivation were studied (with or without liquid bovine biofertilizer in the irrigation water), in the 0-0.1 m and 0-0.3 m layers. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected from the above-mentioned layers and physical analyzes, pertinent to the study objective, were performed. The response function model was applied to verify how the soil independent physical variables influence on the Srelative index in the 0-0.1 m and 0-0.3 m layers, with 0 and 60% biofertilizer, being combined two to two. Once the response functions were known, the slopes of both functions were compared, being represented by the coefficients β11-β12 and β21-β22. This comparison enabled verifying whether there was an effect of the treatments on the response variable. In addition, the standard error of the difference between coefficients was calculated, and the Student's t-test applied. The method of multiple regression was also used to confirm the effect of the variables on the Srelative index for the 0-0.3 m layer in both treatments. Then, the variables with greater weight were selected by a backward elimination method to estimate the Srelative. The results showed that the Srelative index is strongly influenced by properties of the porous fraction, with total porosity and continuity of pores being of significant influence. Management with liquid bovine biofertilizer results in improvement in the soil structure, with effects measured by the Srelative index.

Introduction: In infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis on non-invasive ventilation (NIV) via the RAM cannula nasal interface, variables predicting subsequent intubation, or NIV non-response, are understudied. We sought to identify predictors of NIV non-response. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study in infants admitted for respiratory failure from bronchiolitis placed on NIV in a quaternary children’s hospital. We excluded children with concurrent sepsis, critical congenital heart disease, or with preexisting tracheostomy. The primary outcome was NIV non-response defined as intubation after a trial of NIV. Secondary outcomes were vital sign values before and after NIV initiation, duration of NIV and intubation, and mortality. Primary analyses included Chi-square, Wilcoxon rank-sum, student’s t test, paired analyses, and adjusted and unadjusted logistic regression assessing heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) before and after NIV initiation. Results: Of 138 infants studied, 34% were non-responders. There were no differences in baseline characteristics of responders and non-responders. HR decreased after NIV initiation in responders (156 [143-156] to149 [141-158], p < 0.01) compared to non-responders (158 [149-166] to 158 [145-171], p = 0.73). RR decreased in responders (50 [43-58] vs 47 [41-54]) and non-responders (52 [48-58] vs 51 [40-55], both p < 0.01). Concurrent bacterial pneumonia (OR 6.06, 95% CI: 2.54-14.51) and persistently elevated HR (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01-1.07) were associated with NIV non-response. Conclusion: In children with acute bronchiolitis who fail to respond to NIV and require subsequent intubation, we noted associations with persistently elevated HR after NIV initiation and concurrent bacterial pneumonia.

The aim of this study was to determine the impact of motor abilities on mastering an obstacle course and define quantitative differences in basic motor abilities between the students awarded poor grades and the students awarded higher grades based on the result achieved on the obstacle course designed to test motor skills. The results of regression analysis demonstrated that motor abilities are important for mastering an obstacle course for testing motor skills and, on the basis of them, we may predict the result that defines the students' specific skills. Moreover, the results of the Student's t-test for independent samples demonstrated a statistically significant difference in the level of motor abilities between the students awarded poor grades and those awarded higher grades. The difference is defined by statistically significantly better values of the results achieved on motor tests: the maximum number of sit-ups (MPTP), stick mobility (MOKP), hand tapping (MTAP) and Cooper's 12 minute run test (MKUP), achieved by the students with higher grades, based on which we can assume that these variables are predictive of successful mastery of the obstacle course for testing motor skills. The results obtained might contribute to a better organization of training work in teaching, especially regarding an approach to improving motor abilities that dominantly have an impact on mastering an obstacle course designed to test motor skills.

Background. Knowledge and psychomotor skills are essential in dental education. The aims were to (1) investigate the correlation between dental students’ didactic and psychomotor skills performance in the dental anatomy and preclinical operative dentistry courses and (2) explore the impact of gender on students’ performance in both courses. Materials and Methods. A retrospective cohort study was performed on dental students’ (164 students; 72 males and 92 females) dental anatomy and preclinical operative courses scores of the same class over 2 years (2018–2020). Didactic and practical scores were collected. The didactic scores included examinations. Practical scores included tooth wax carving for the dental anatomy course and class II cavity preparations and restorations for the preclinical operative. Student’s t-test and ANOVA were used to analyze the difference between the didactic and psychomotor skills scores of both courses and genders. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to explore correlations ( p < 0.05 ). Results. Moderate, positive, and significant correlations were found between didactic scores in both courses and between dental anatomy’s didactic and psychomotor skills. A weak, positive, and significant correlation existed between the preclinical operative didactic and psychomotor silks ( p < 0.05 ). Females’ didactic performance was significantly better than males. Gender had a significant, positive, and moderate correlation in the dental anatomy course, but moderate-weak in preclinical operative ( p < 0.05 ). Conclusion. Students’ didactic and psychomotor performance correlations in dental anatomy and preclinical operative courses were positive. The correlation was moderate and weak and varied by course. Gender had a significant impact on student performance and varied by procedure and courses investigated.
