The ongoing globalisation has led to a tremendous expansion of the English language. With China striving to become part of the world economy since the late 1970's, there has been a great emphasis placed on the education of young people to become a world citizen with fluent English. “Being a global citizen” is having strong interests in global issues, cultivating the understanding and appreciation of diverse values, and enhancing country's competitiveness. All this however needs to be realized through communication in English, the world language. Improving communicative competence among Chinese learners of English depends on how English is learnt in the FL classroom and how it gets practiced outside the classroom. Data drawn from English corners, English clubs and English church all show that those informal learning settings have a complentary role to play especially when the formal English classroom is found having various deficits. Data also confirm that informal settings offer the opportunity to close the gap between L1 and L2 learning processes, and nurtutre learners' communicative competence through social intercourse and intercultural exchanges. Moreover, EFL learning is inherently intercultural, which facilitate cross cultural perspectives through bilingualism and bridges over the indigenous cultural traditions and the western democratic values.

This study examines the relationship and correlation between initial admission criteria and  English performance of first year students at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences. The performance of 1,595 English language students was compared to the initial academic admission criteria to determine if a correlation exists between academic achievement pre and post admission.  Admission criteria include high school grades, General Aptitude Test score (GAT), and Scholastic Achievement Admission Test scores (SAAT). Deep statistical analyses, including independent t tests and multiple linear regression reveal a correlation between pre and post admission performance. For this student population, GAT score was more predictive of English performance than SAAT scores, while the high school grade had no significant relationship to performance on the course. Furthermore, GAT had a higher predictive weight of 7% when compared individually with other admission criteria. However, in a combined model, all of the admission tests cumulatively predicted 17.3% of  English performance. Such power is relatively low and requires additional variables to accurately predict a student’s final English score. This study provides unique analyses of performance within the Saudi higher education system and provides insight for those teaching or studying English as a second language. This study is therefore relevant for educators in universities using English for the instruction of non-English, native students and raises questions as to the value of current admission criteria.

This paper presents an attempt to help students enhance their speaking skills in Moroccan English as a foreign language (EFL) classes. It was observed that students in Moroccan high schools are generally not able to speak their minds out freely and imaginatively in English. This paper studies the causes for students’ weak speaking skills in the English language and suggests solutions to mend the situation. An observation of the teaching and learning practices took place in a sample Moroccan high school and interviews as well as questionnaires were administered for the aim of tracing the obstacles students face in their learning process as well as their preferences that they wish to have applied in the speaking sessions. Several speaking activities were tested and proved effective in encouraging students to speak English in class and defeat their shyness and reluctance to express their opinions. These activities are provided in this paper for teachers to use starting from common core classes passing by 1st year Baccalaureate( Bac )and ending with 2nd year Bac (common core being the first year of high school in Morocco and so on) and include watching films and conducting projects in the framework of a cooperative learning. They outline a project of forming good speakers of English in Morocco and maybe elsewhere in the Arab world.

English is one of the most important language in the world. It can be used as a language in any part of the world. That is why it is taught at all level of education in our country, Indonesia. Elementary school, high school and university students are all learning English now. However, learning English sentence pattern is much more difficult than learning Indonesian’s. English language learners usually get problems in understanding and using those three forms of verb which are commonly called irregular verbs as the core of tenses which are very essential in formulating tenses, have been taught at Junior and Senior High School. However, it is assumed that they are hardly used, even by those students of English Department of FBS UNIMA in Tondano. As prove it is observed that almost all students rarely speak English although they always meet at campus it is seems that they do not know how to speak English even a very simple sentence. It is assumed that their low of English competence has made them not have confidence to do their performance. Anyway, this is still an assumption that needs to be investigated. The low of competence of English knowledge might have been one of the causes that make them not able to communicate in English. Not mastering the three forms of verbs, their meanings and functions caused them enable to expressed what happened in the past present and future or they might know the structure or the pattern but do not know when to use. The research questions: Can the effect of familiar songs’ tune improve students’ understanding on irregular verbs. The study was delimited to the forms, meanings and functions of irregular verbs. The focus on this study was the fourth semester students of English department, FBS UNIMA. The tune is limited to that belongs to the songs which are well known by the students. To learn and memorize irregular verbs which have the same V2 and V3, the tune is taken from the song “Are you sleeping Brother John”. Each line was sung twice in order that the students are able to memorize easily. This is a quantitative research through pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test design. The pretest was given to the students before treatment and the post-test was given after the treatment. This research showed that the effect of Familiar Songs’ Tune was improved students’ understanding on irregular verbs and it has made the class atmosphere become so lively and the students enjoy learning English by singing. Learning English by singing is fun.

AbstractThe post-secondary education system in the Province de Québec is quite different from that in the rest of Canada and in many other countries throughout the world. The introduction of a 2-year Collèges d’enseignement général et professionnel (CEGEP) program in 1967 has led to a reduction in the number of years that Quebec students have to spend in both high school and at university. The CEGEP program combines the last year of high school with the first year of a traditional 4-year university program meaning that students living in Quebec must do a 3-year undergraduate degree at the universities, while all other students must do a 4-year degree. Moreover, since almost 50 % of 27 000 undergraduate students at McGill come from other parts of Canada and internationally, this has led to enrolments of about 1000 students in the basic science courses. We present here an overview of how the introductory General Chemistry courses at McGill University are currently being handled so that the students have a meaningful first-year experience.

The article considers the relevance and importance of the formation of sociocultural competence in modern educational practice. It is shown that in order to create a more tolerant and cultural oriented society, as well as successful socialization of young people, high-school’s foreign language teachers need to create a positive ethno-linguistic and ethno-psychological cultural atmosphere in the classroom, that leads young minds to tolerant and healthy behavior towards other cultures and nations, which is one of the most important aspects of education in the context of modern and comprehensive globalization. The formation of sociocultural competence as a component of the communicative competence of schoolchildren is considered and examples of its successful formation in high school with in-depth study of the English language are given.

This article looks at the function of creative translation tasks for learners in the ELT classroom. It does not advocate the use of L1 (Language 1, first language, mother tongue) as a teaching tool, for classroom management, setting up activities, or for explaining new vocabulary but encourages the use of innovative translation tasks for developing language competence. The article starts by looking at benefits of creative translation as an aid to language learning. It then briefly reviews the current education system. It concludes with some creative translation tasks and observations on how to utilize them in the best possible ways. This paper advocates the effectiveness of using creative translation to develop the communicative competence of a language among the students at tertiary level. English dominates the world as no other language ever has in the world. There is a need to emphasize the conscious acquisition of English as a meaningful system and a creative process. When there is a need there is an urge of finding various mediums to satisfy that need, now this medium should be such as it not only helps in learning a language but also develops competency of the learner. Thus, one of the effective and fairly possible fundamentals of learning a new language is translation. Translation is desirable as it does not undermine the adult learners’ confidence. This paper thus, aims at the development of communicative competence, enabling the learners to discuss the cultures they encounter while translating and eventually helps the learners in deepening their sensitivity to language through heightening their critical ability and creative power. The tasks on translation helps learners make use of the English language while communicating with each other in more realistic situations than what generally happens in the classrooms. They get aware of different cultures while discussing different languages. Thus, translation becomes an intellectually challenging process.
