SUMMARY Although hypnosis has played a part in psychotherapy for a long time, it is not yet seen as an evidence-based therapy and is absent from many practice guidelines when it comes to the treatment of psychiatric disorders. At present, the applications and methods of hypnotherapy are poorly understood and other methods of psychotherapy tend to be favoured. This review article aims to introduce the role of hypnotherapy and its application for certain common psychiatric presentations, as well as examine its efficacy by summarising recent evidence from high-quality outcome studies and meta-analyses.

This review article focuses on our recent studies on novel soft materials consisting of carbon nanotubes. Single-walled carbon nanotubes, when suspended in imidazolium ion-based ionic liquids and ground in an agate mortar, form physical gels (bucky gels), where heavily entangled bundles of carbon nanotubes are exfoliated to give highly dispersed, much finer bundles. By using bucky gels, the first printable actuators that operate in air for a long time without any external electrolyte are developed. Furthermore, the use of polymerizable ionic liquids as the gelling media results in the formation of electroconductive polymer/nanotube composites with enhanced mechanical properties. The article also highlights a new family of nanotubular graphite, via self-assembly of amphiphilic hexabenzocoronene (HBC) derivatives. The nanotubes consist of a graphitic wall composed of a great number of π-stacked HBC units and are electroconductive upon oxidation. The use of amphiphilic HBCs with functional groups results in the formation of nanotubes with various interesting properties.

Pollution has been increased recently due to the activities of industries and agriculture, especially pesticides, heavy metals, and other toxic compounds that are usually considered as carcinogenic and mutagenic, materials need a long time to be degraded into simple forms. Therefore, it is a crucial to eradicate such pollutants from environments in different mechanisms from which the possibility of using microorganisms such as fungi. This mechanism then would be called mycoremediation. Such process should be known and practice to achieve clean and healthy environments. In this review article, we shed light on the definition, applications, advantages, and disadvantages of mycoremediation.

The harmony of the multi-racial and multi-religious society is a unique identity that Malaysia had since independence. However, efforts to maintain this harmony are certainly full of various challenges, especially in the era of eruption of information and communication technology. The services offered by technology have now been abused, especially insocial media. Freedom of speech has been misinterpreted to the point of inviting insult to religion and race, as well as uttering hate speech which becomes worse. After GE-14, the seeds of tension began to grow, leading to the birth of sensitive issues, especially related to religion and race, which could potentially lead Malaysia towards division and hostility if not managed properly. This is because the elements of religion and race are commodities that are often used as a tool to cause dissatisfaction and conflict. If this situation is not handled harmoniously, it is feared that it could trigger tensions in the relationship between races and religions in Malaysia. Thus, a solid foundation based on the principle of wasatiyyah needs to be constructed in order to determine an appropriate approach that suits the current reality of the multiracial society in Malaysia. This approach is built based on the guidance of the Qur’an, the text of the Hadith and the thoughts of Muslim scholars considering the current reality that exists in Malaysia today. This balanced approach can strengthen and re-harmonize social interaction among the communities to maintain the congruence and unity of community life that has been constructed for a long time.

Diketopiperazines are potential structures with extensive biological functions, which have attracted much attention of natural product researchers for a long time. These compounds possess a stable six-membered ring, which is an important pharmacophore. The marine organisms have especially been proven to be a wide source for discovering diketopiperazine derivatives. In recent years, more and more interesting bioactive diketopiperazines had been found from various marine habitats. This review article is focused on the new 2,5-diketopiperazines derived from marine organisms (sponges and microorganisms) reported from the secondary half-year of 2014 to the first half of the year of 2021. We will comment their chemical structures, biological activities and sources. The objective is to assess the merit of these compounds for further study in the field of drug discovery.

AbstractIn 2002, Dr. Hubert Klus wrote a guest editorial introducing a review article on “Effects of Ingredients on Cigarette Smoke Composition and Biological Activity: A Literature Overview” [Beitr. Tabakforsch. Int. 20 (2002) 107-247]. On this occasion, he turned to some historical facts on the monitoring and regulation of additives used for tobacco products. He reported that already some 200 years ago stringent rules were set up in Nuremberg for the correct use of ingredients in manufacturing tobacco products (and vinegar)! In the decade from 2000 on, a wealth of valuable scientific information as well as opinionated reviews were published on the potential effects of additives on consumer behavior and health. Therefore, we believe that the critical review in this issue is important and right on time.It is with great sadness that we have to inform our readers that Professor ZHU Zunquan passed away in July. He was one of the most important scientists in tobacco research in China. He was born in 1919 in Xiangyang, China, and has for a long time been honorary or visiting professor of four universities in China. Of Professor Zhu's large spectrum of scientific publications we would like to mention especially the books “Cigarette Manufacturing Technology” and “Tobacco Technology”. Professor Zhu served also as executive editor of the journals “Tobacco Science and Technology” and “ActaTabacariaSinica”. Dr. Nicolas Baskevitch wrote a personal obituary for this issue.

Globalization is not a novel development in the history of capitalism. In his final Monthly Review article, Paul Sweezy argued that globalization is a process, and that it has been occurring for a long time.… The accumulation of capital…has always meant expansion. Furthermore, this very process of growing and spreading is global in scope and, most importantly, imperialistic in its characteristics. Marxist scholars have long argued that imperialism has always accompanied capitalism…. Nevertheless, even if we start with the idea that globalization—or global capitalist expansion—is not novel, this does not trample the argument that the development of such expansion is marked by new characteristics in certain periods. Examining these historically specific characteristics can highlight the imperialistic "nature" of capitalism throughout history, including the development of our current global economy, which will be the focus of this essay.

Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
