This work makes a comparative study of two methods to determine deflection in steel beams: (a) Theoretical and (b) Finite element. For method (a) the solution of the differential equation associated with the modeling of the deflection of a beam is found, while for method (b) a simulation is made in Solidworks. Both methods are compared with experimental data in order to analyze which of the methods presents less uncertainty and show the usefulness of the theoretical part in the modeling of physical systems.

As one of the most important load-bearing parts, coupler knuckle has a direct relationship with the safety in operation and reliability of the freight trains. A new forged coupler knuckle is made in order to meet the challenge to export ore train to Australia. Using the finite element technique, the stress characteristics of forged coupler knuckle under 1225kN load in tension and 1500kN compression load are evaluated. Simplify the load and boundary condition depend on the real working situation, the numerical simulation results coincide with experimental data.

We have investigated the pairing and magicity effect in context of a comparative study of 13,14C induced reactions on 232Th target at energies in the vicinity of Coulomb barrier. The fission distribution and related properties are explored in terms of the summed-up preformation probabilities. The barrierpenetrability is found to be higher for fragments emitted from 246Cm* formed in 14C+232Th reaction than those emitted in the fission of 245Cm*, leading to higher magnitude of cross-section for earlier case. The DCM calculated fusion-fission cross-sections using ΔR=0 fm are normalised to compare with the available experimental data. The calculations are done for spherical shape of fragments and it will be of further interest to explore the fission mass distribution after the inclusion of deformations.

AbstractWhether companies and shareholders should be held liable for land contamination that occurred prior to the passage of the law imposing liability for such contamination is a complex issue. After a theoretical analysis of the legitimacy of retroactivity in land contamination law, our comparative study shows that most countries have adopted, or tacitly approve of, retroactive liability for land contamination. However, the liability schemes implemented in the countries investigated vary as to the types of obligation, the timing of conduct for which liability is imposed, and the standard of liability, among other factors. The retroactive imposition of liability in China's recently enacted Law on the Prevention and Control of Soil Pollution is examined, as well as the roadblocks that still remain, and further improvement based on the theoretical and comparative analysis are considered.

The purpose of this paper is to validate the accelerated testing methodology of a component from the field of aviation (supple platinum) using the standard calculation method and the analysis with finite elements. The specimens made out of supple platinum from the helicopter’s structure have been put through to accelerated experiments. Using the data resulted from the analysis with finite elements, the data resulted from resistance calculations and the experimental data obtained from the testing of specimens, a comparative study was realized between the specific strain and the normal stress that were obtained. From the results of this comparative study, it is obvious the fact that the method of analysis with finite elements is an efficient instrument to validate the experiments.

Microstructure evolution model based on the differential equation describing evolution of dislocations was proposed. Sensitivity analysis was performed and parameters with the strongest influence on the output of the model were revealed. Identification of the model coefficients was performed for various metallic materials using inverse analysis for experimental data. The model was implemented in the finite element code and simulations of various hot forming processes were performed.

We give some sufficient conditions to guarantee convergence of solutions to a nonlinear vector differential equation of third order. We prove a new result on the convergence of solutions. An example is given to illustrate the theoretical analysis made in this paper. Our result improves and generalizes some earlier results in the literature.

Purpose This paper aims to develop a non-linear finite element model predicting the response of externally strengthened beams under a three-point flexure test. Design/methodology/approach The ANSYS software is used for modeling. SOILD65, LINK180, SHELL181 and SOLID185 elements are used, respectively, to model concrete, steel reinforcement, polymer and steel plate support. A parametric study was carried out. The effects of compressive strength, Young’s modulus, layers number and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer thickness on beam behavior are analyzed. A comparative study between the non-linear finite element and analytical models, including the ACI 440.2 R-08 model, and experimental data is also carried out. Findings A comparative study of the non-linear finite element results with analytical models, including the ACI 440.2 R-08 model and experimental data for different parameters, shows that the strengthened beams possessed better resistance to cracks. In general, the finite element model’s results are in good agreement with the experimental test data. Practical implications This model will predict the strengthened beams behavior and can describe the beams physical conditions, yielding the results that can be interpreted in the structural study context without using a laboratory testing. Originality/value On the basis of the results, a good match is found between the model results and experimental data at all stages of loading the tested samples. Crack models obtained in the non-linear finite element model in the beams are also presented. The submitted finite element model can be used to predict the behavior of the reinforced concrete beam. Also, the comparative study between an analytical model proposed by of current code of ACI 440.2 R-08 and finite element analysis is investigated.

In this paper the questions of local stability of castellated beams with openings of rhombic shape were considered. The studies were performed numerically on the finite-element models including investigation of castellated beam openings, flanges and a web thickness on critical load influence. The obtained results were verified by experimental data received from the tests performed on the 4-meters steel beams with different parameters of perforation. It was a changing relative width of web-posts under constant height of openings. The experiments confirmed reliability of stability calculations by FEM and show that, in fact, the critical load corresponding to buckling of web-posts determines bearing capacity of castellated beams. It was defined that under the fixed height of openings the critical load of beam with rhombic openings is almost independent on relative width of web-posts.

An attempt to analyse mental representations of basic emotions – joy and fear – is made in terms of child-parent relations. On the basis of theoretical analysis the possible levels and components in the views of parents about the emotions of preschool children are identified. The importance and significance of parents' knowledge about the causes and patterns of emotional behaviour in children are indicated. The scheme of the pilot study is proposed, the procedure of the survey based on written verbal reports is described. The qualitative-quantitative, comparative analysis of the selected units in the mental representations of parents about the reasons for the demonstration and the basis for their recognition (decoding) is given. The proposed thesaurus of situations that contribute to experiencing emotions of joy, fear. The main patterns in the demonstration of emotional behaviour of children, according to parental representations are revealed. The data obtained correlate with the results of previous studies on problems in the field of child-parent relations, psychology of emotions and can be applied in practice.

AbstractThe bandwidth, average bandwidth, envelope, profile and antibandwidth of the matrices have been the subjects of study for at least 45 years. These problems have generated considerable interest over the years because of them practical relevance in areas like: solving the system of equations, finite element methods, circuit design, hypertext layout, chemical kinetics, numerical geophysics etc. In this paper a brief description of these problems are made in terms of their definitions, followed by a comparative study of them, using both approaches: matrix geometry and graph theory. Time evolution of the corresponding algorithms as well as a short description of them are made. The work also contains concrete real applications for which a large part of presented algorithms were developed.
