The article discusses the results of empirical research aiming to study ontological security of actors with low and high activity in life. Ontological security is seen as a life being which permanently embodies independent “I” in real-life contacts with people around and the world. Empirical research engages 119 first-year students at medical college. To study actor’s life activity, the authors applied A.A. Volochkov and A.Yu. Popov’s method of “Diagnostics of student activity” DAS 2, which is based on the theoretical model of actor’s life and includes three components of activity: need in interactions, self-regulation, and satisfaction. N.V. Kopteva’s psychometric method of studying ontological security "OS (PM)" and the method of studying ontological security, built on the principle of the semantic differential "OS (SD)" that were designed on the basis of the ontological security concept, and R. Laing’s alternative clinical conception of ontological insecurity, were also used in the research. To process the data the authors applied methods of mathematical statistics: descriptive statistics, cluster analysis (k-means method), Mann-Whitney U-test, correlation analysis (r-Pearson correlation coefficient). It is stated that students with higher activity differ from students with lower activity and show high ontological security resting on the ontological ground inside and beyond their own “I”, which takes place at two levels of its reflection - less differentiated experiences: confidence in mental “I”, in the body, in the world, in people, in individual value and more differentiated experiences: autonomy and vital contacts with the world.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease, which is most commonly caused by Echinococcus granulosus. It is endemic in many parts of the world. However, Hydatid disease can occur in almost any part of the body. Isolated omenal hydatid cyst is one of the least common sites. A case of very unusual omental hydatid cyst is presented here which was diagnosed in the Department of Radiology & Imaging, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, and subsequently confirmed by histopathology. Background & objective: Perinatal asphyxia affects all organs of the body and brain is the most affected organ. The study was undertaken to find out the status of serum magnesium and calcium level and their significant association among asphyxiated term newborns with moderate to severe HIE.Material & methods: The Cross sectional study was done in the Department of Neonatology, Dhaka Medical College Hospital during January 2012 to July 2012. A total of 102 asphyxiated term neonates were enrolled , who has H/O perinatal asphyxia and had Apgar score of 6 or <6 at 5 minutes. Clinical grading of HIE into moderate and severe was done according to modified Sarnat and Sarnat scoring system .Under aseptic precautions with standard protocol , estimation of serum magnesium and calcium level in venous blood was done at 48 hours and 7th day of birth . Among the study population , 17 patients had died during follow up and 4 patients were absconded. Finally 81 patients were evaluated by both blood samples though initial 102 cases were evaluated by their first sample. 50 normal healthy infants were also evaluated for serum magnesium and calcium at their 48 hours of birth. Chi-square test was used to assess statistical significance, Pearson correlation coefficient test was done to find out correlation between serum magnesium and calcium status and APGAR score & t test was done to assess the comparison between the values of serum magnesium and calcium found on two occasions. Results: Of 102 cases majority (58%) were male. Most of the cases (65.68%) were moderate HIE. Mean serum magnesium was 1.36(0.9-2.8) mg/dl and 1.16(.88-2.6) mg/dl among HIE II and HIE III respectively (p<0.05). Mean serum calcium of HIE II and HIE III were 7.14(5.1-9.6) mg/dl and 6.58(5.3-9.0) mg/dl respectively (p<0.05). There is positive correlation with individual APGAR score with serum magnesium (r=0.229, p=0.02) and serum calcium (r=0.231, p=0.019) level. Hypocalcaemia was found 35.82% and 57.14% among HIE II And HIE III cases respectively(p<0.01). Hypomagnesaemia was found 28.36% and 45.71% among HIE II and HIE III (p<0.05).Conclusion: Hypomagnesaemia and hypocalcaemia are significantly associated with the degree of severity of HIE.J Dhaka Medical College, Vol. 26, No.2, October, 2017, Page 148-152

This study explored the transformative potential of Nia as experienced by six Brown or Black Belt Nia instructors. Nia is a barefoot fitness practice that is done to music, focusing on technical precision, individual expression and the sensation of pleasure (Nia South Africa, 2010). The participants had experienced transformation which was defined as a change that brings about a long-lasting state, including a fundamental shift in perspective and attention. This shift in perception includes the way in which one sees oneself and the world, and consequently impacts one’s relationships and values in a lasting way (Schlitz el al., 2007). Interpretative phenomenological analysis (Smith et al., 2009) was used and semi-structured, online interviews and thematic analysis were conducted to derive overarching themes. Eight themes included valuing the body as the most important relationship, self-regulation through the practice of Nia, healthier relationships, transformation through embodied principles, Nia as a sacred livelihood, disciplined practice as key to on-going transformation, healing the world through Nia, and increased spiritual connection to the universe. The findings have potential implications for advanced Nia practitioners, the Nia community and those interested in transformation through movement practices. Limitations of this study and further research are discussed.

In this article, I offer a somatic process to non-movers at home during the COVID-19 lockdown. These participants also offer reflections on their individual experience post-moving. As a facilitator, I invite you to take part in this process, whether you are a dancer or non-mover (whatever your age or ability). The process focuses on self-regulation and interoceptive awareness, allowing the time and space to connect with Self. Self-regulation and interoceptive awareness are two of the most important aspects of somatic movement in supporting free-flowing movement and balancing the nervous system. Self-regulation in turn can produce a sense of agency – meaning a sense of autonomy and release within the body can occur. In line with cultural pressures experienced within society, somatic processes can ease the anxieties of everyday life. Inviting Self into a practical, felt process is sometimes what we need in order to re-evaluate our positioning and perceptions within the world. As human beings we often find ourselves in stressful and challenging situations that ultimately affect the body’s nervous state and our relationship with Self. We currently find ourselves in the middle of a global pandemic, and opportunities to connect with Self in creative, communal ways are hindered. I am offering this article as a way of communicating my appreciation and passion for somatic work during this pandemic. As a Ph.D. student studying somatic movement dance education and therapy, I deeply recognize it is important to be connected with community and others, as well as my own inner sphere. Connection produces a sense of optimism during this time. This article offers a simplistically detailed, yet effective process that locates and contacts Self within our feeling, sensing organism. As we begin to re-connect with our energy and interoceptive awareness, a physiological shift can be experienced. When we drop our awareness within the vitality of the moving body, a change in consciousness can occur. Using breath awareness as an inroad to sensing internal processes, I offer this practical process to you, inviting you to cultivate an inner essence of gravity, breath, ground and body.

Context: Adequate knowledge about nutritional status of a community is necessary to have a comprehensive idea about its development process, as under-nutrition is one of the major health problems in developing countries. As an individual’s height and weight can be readily and inexpensively measured, body mass index (BMI) has become a popular heuristic approximation for body fatness in epidemiology and clinical practice. The BMI is the most common surrogate measure of obesity as well as nutritional assessment for individual. For this reasons an attempt has been taken to assess the nutritional status through the body mass index (BMI) among first year students of MBBS and B sc nursing course of government medical education institutes in Dhaka. Material and Methods: This descriptive type of analytic study was conducted in the Anatomy Department of Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. The study sample was 177 individuals of first year students of MBBS and B.Sc nursing course admitted in the session of 2017-2018 in the Dhaka Medical College & Dhaka Nursing College, Dhaka. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated as student’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of the student’s height in meters (kg/m2). The warning sign of poor nutritional health was calculated according to the checklist adapted by the Nutrition Screening Initiative, American Academy of Family Physicians July 2001. With the help of statistical software SPSS-20 comparisons between the two groups were done. Result: The mean (±SD) height (meter), weight (kg) and BMI of groups MBBS and B Sc nursing were 1.63±0.09, 61.65±11.22, 23.11±3.53 and 1.56±0.07, 49.05±9.42, 20.15±3.47 respectively. Good nutritional health status was found 61.80% in MBBS and 53.30% in B Sc nursing groups. Conclusion: The present study showed that the BMI of first year students of MBBS course is higher than first year students of B Sc nursing course. This article explores ontological security and insecurity in Daniel Keyes’s novel, Flowers for Algernon. It opens with a very brief overview of the 1960s counter-culture to contextualise not only Keyes’s novel but also Laing’s theories of ontological (in)security. After a discussion of Laing’s concept of ontological security and insecurity, the focus shifts to Arthur W. Frank’s notions of the wounded storyteller and how Charlie Gordon’s entry into the medical world constitutes a colonisation of the body that brings with it a deepening sense of ontological insecurity. In entering the world of medical research, Charlie becomes the wounded storyteller, offering a first-person account of his experiences during the experiment and its aftermath. As the initial success of the surgery deteriorates steadily into failure, with the protagonist’s intelligence returning steadily to its pre-operation level, the question of time and how he can make the best use of it to record the experiment becomes paramount. The final section of the article centres on the growing link between the surgery’s failure and how it increases the protagonist’s ontological insecurity. He uses the diminishing amount of time available to him in search of understanding the fuller implications of the experiment. Eventually, he reverts to his initial rudimentary ontological security when he finds himself with the same intellectual level, as prior to the experiment.

This chapter discusses the Meta_Body participatory art project. Initiated in a collaborative virtual environment and in a “real life” art exhibition, it now continues in the metaverse creative flux. Meta_Body focuses on two aspects: first, the avatar as body/language, open to experimentation and potency; second, avatar building as a shared creative process and as aesthetical experience. Through the practice of avatar creation, distribution, embodiment and transformation, the artists aim to understand the processes of virtual corporeality constitution: to question the role of the body in virtual environment, its importance in engaging with the world and in self-expression, and explore its metaphorical aspects. The method used to implement this project is a shared creative process, in which multiple subjects come to be authors along different phases of the project. Through the embodiment and transformation of avatars, the artwork's aesthetical experience becomes a creative process.

Introduction: Stabbing is the most common method of homicide as like as other parts of the world. Precise examination of stab wound along with the type of other wounds considering their site, shape, number and orientation of the wounds in relation to each other etc. provide a number of clues which may be of paramount importance in reconstruction and interpretation of the whole events. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study carried out in Forensic Medicine Department of Sylhet M.A.G. Osmani Medical College, Sylhet from July 2010 to June 2011 and in the year of July 2017 to June 2018 to observe different patterns of injuries in fatal cases of stab wound. 20 autopsies were included in this study using random sampling. Results: Male(90%) are more victimized than female. The pattern of injury that found to be most common is the penetrating wound of the chest injuring either lung or heart. Second most common injury pattern is the penetrating wound of the chest or abdomen injuring eitherstomach or liver.Another pattern is widely scattered multiple stab wounds both on front and back of the body and the fourth pattern is stab wound of the lower limb causing division of a major blood vessel. Conclusion: The stab wound is deeper than it is long or wide. This means depth is the greatest dimension in case of Stab wound and that is where the danger lies as it is evident in this study. Abstract As is well-known, the first part of a newborn’s body to emerge during a standard birth is the head. In a breech birth, which is much more rare, the baby enters the world bottom-first. There is no evidence at all of babies exiting the womb with their arms outstretched. Yet biblical accounts of childbirth contain explicit and implicit descriptions of the hand as the first limb to emerge from the womb. In this note, I argue that this erroneous depiction is a reflection of the real life situation of the biblical authors. Since men were not present at childbirth, their knowledge of the process was limited and stereotyped. In contrast, men were very familiar with the birthing of sheep and cattle. Typically, the front legs of a newborn sheep or calf emerge before the body. Male biblical authors relied upon their knowledge of the birthing of sheep and cattle to describe the births of human infants, mistakenly supposing that these two different processes were identical.

Rapidly developing information technologies bring to crucial changes in different areas of student life activities - learning, communications, leisure – and have an impact on individuals’ activities. Empirical research aims to identify connections of activity and ontological security in communications, knowledge, learning, experiences, reflection. The assumption, that activity in communications and activity in learning have closer links with ontological security than activity in other areas of life, is put forward as a hypothesis. Theoretical basis of the research creates A.A. Volochkov’s concept of activity of an individual (subject), N.V. Kopteva’s theoretical construct of ontological security. The research involves 97 students of medical college at the age of 17-21. The empirical research applied the following methods: methods of “Diagnostics of activity of students” DAS-2 (A.Yu. Popov, A.A. Volochkov); questionary of ontological security (OS-PM); method of ontological security built up on the principle of semantic differential (OS-SD) (N.V. Kopteva). As a result of empirical research, it was stated that broad-spectrum activity of students is implemented and developed in connection with one of the basic grounds of human – ontological security. Out of three model components of activity structure: need in interaction - volitional regulation of interactions - satisfaction with interactions, the first two components are stronger connected with ontological security that the third component. Out of the life spheres where the activity is found, activity in communication and activity in learning have closer connections with ontological security that any other areas of life.
