Background: With the advances in information and technology, internet addiction appears as a serious obsessive condition that has numerous dreadful effects on human physical and mental health. The objective of the study was to determine the level of internet addiction among medical undergraduate students of Isra University, Hyderabad. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at the Isra University, Hyderabad from August to December 2019. All medical (MBBS) undergraduate students of either sex were included. A stratified sampling technique was used for the selection of participants. A structured 5-point Likert scale questionnaire for the internet addiction test was adopted from Dr. Kimberly Young and used for the collection of participant’s information and measurement of their level of addiction. Results: A total of 263 undergraduate medical students participated in the study. The majority (56.65%) were males while 51.71% were from the age group 21-22 years. Over two-thirds (85.17%) of participants were found to be internet addicts. Of these internet addicts, 63.84% were mild or minimal internet addicts while 12.05% were severely addicted participants. A statistically significant difference (p<0.05) was observed between gender, age groups, year of study, and current residential status of participants. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic known as COVID 19 has placed an overwhelming burden on health systems and authorities to respond with effective and appropriate interventions, policies and message. , it is important for doctors working with the population to have adequate knowledge related to SARS-CoV-2 pandemic which should be of great help in dealing with the emerging situation. This survey was aimed to find out the level of knowledge related to SARS-Cov-2 among doctors, interns and medical undergraduate students with particular emphasis on Bihar. Objectives : to assess the basic knowledge among doctors, interns and undergraduate students that is needed for the prevention and treatment of the COVID19 disease and to find out any differences in their knowledge with associated factors. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey among doctors and undergraduate medical students was conducted during the first COVID-19 wave using a validated self-administered questionnaire of 14 items, sent to doctors via online platforms. The data was analyzed using SPSS v.20. Results : Good score was secured more by males and elder doctors as compared to females and younger ones. Doctors who thought they have good knowledge ,actually scored good. Conclusion: The knowledge related to COVID-19 in doctors of Bihar was found to be at par with other states of India. In general they appear to be motivated to upgrade their knowledge. However, the average knowledge among undergraduate medical students cautions for careful induction of them in COVID 19 workforce if needed.

Abstract Background The prevalence of internet addiction in India varies from 20% to 59% in undergraduate medical students. Therefore this study was planned to assess the prevalence, pattern and reason of internet usage and to assess predictors of internet addiction in medical undergraduate students.Material and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 201 medical undergraduate students in a medical college of North India from April 1st to May 31st, 2019.A self-designed semi-structured and pre tested questionnaire was used to know pattern and reasons associated with internet addiction (IA) and Dr. Kimberly Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT) tool was used to measure level of IA. Discriminant analysis was used to assess predictors of internet addiction. Data was recorded in MS Excel and trial version of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version 27.0; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) software was used for statistical analysis. Result Prevalence of internet addiction was found to be 90%, where prevalence of mild IA was 48.8% followed by moderate and severe IA, 38.8% and 2.4% respectively. Predictive accuracy of model based on socio-demographic, social media applications usage, Entertainment site usage, Educational site usage and final model were found to be 61.2%, 63.7%, 63.2%, 61.7% and 66.2% respectively.Conclusion Medical undergraduate students are highly vulnerable for internet addiction. We should create awareness among medical students regarding internet addiction and its potential harms; this could be included in foundation course of curriculum implementation support program (CISP) for MBBS students.

Objective: To determine the differences of self-perception of halitosis and oral hygiene practices among the medical and dental undergraduate students. Methodology: A cross-sectional study conducted over duration of 9 months amongst the medical and dental undergraduate students of Bahria University Medical and Dental College. The questionnaires were distributed to 298 students. Questionnaire employed for this study was adopted and modified from the study conducted by Khalid Almas et al. Descriptive statistics were checked by means of percentages and frequency for all variables. Chi-square test was applied to check significant difference among the responses given by the medical and dental undergraduate students. Results: The response rate for the survey was about 85%. 55% of dental and 17 % of medical students were able to smell their breath. About having examination by dentist about 73% of medical students agreed as compared to 53% of dental students. Both medical and dental students preferred having examination done by the dentist. For management of halitosis, dentist was preferred by 62% of the dental students, while 97% of the medical students did not agree. 62% of the dental students preferred using traditional medications, while 82% of the medical students preferred using self-medications for treatment. Conclusion: The results suggest that there is not a high level of agreement among dental and medical students concerning the detection and management of halitosis. Although large percent of the respondents claimed to be aware of dentistry, our findings revealed low level of knowledge and attitude to Dentistry by the medical undergraduate students. Efforts should be made towards closing this knowledge gap to attain effective oral health.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the perception of undergraduate students of United Medical and dental college towards objective structured clinical examination as an assessment tool. MATERIAL & METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study included undergraduate medical students, RESULTS: 153 students who completely filled the proforma were included in study among them 31% were male and 69% were females. Mostly agreed that stations in OSCE were simple and easily interpretable and assessed practical skills thoroughly. Majority of students accepted that skills inquired were taught in clinics, stations were according to course and stations were appropriately timed. 66 % confirmed that adequate instructions were provided before exam. 84.31% believed that OSCE is preferable to viva. 57.51% of candidates stated that examiners during OSCE were attentive and gracious but 20.91 % objected it , while 21.57% remained neutral. Almost half of examinees labelled it as comprehensive clinical assessment .Overall, 67.97 % perceived OSCE as demanding and tough assessment. Finally views of students for statement that OSCE is unbiased, reliable and valid were positive in 50.32%.There was a significant difference in the opinion of male and female( p-value is less than 0.05) in statement that OSCE thoroughly assessed practical skills, stations were according to course of instruction, Adequate instructions were provided before exam, superior and preferable to viva, assists in improvement of clinical skills, demanding and tough and finally OSCE was unbiased, reliable and valid CONCLUSION: OSCE was perceived as fair, comprehensive, un-biased format of examination but believed it was more stressful than traditional examination methods . The prevalence of psychological disturbances in medical undergraduate students has been reported from various countries. Very few studies regarding student distress reported from India. Therefore, we conducted this study to determine the presence of depression, anxiety and stress among medical students in MNR Medical College, Sangareddy, Telengana. In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 257 students from MNR Medical College after obtaining written voluntary consent. DASS 42 questionnaire was used to collect information on basic demographic. Scores for each of the respondents were calculated as per the severity- rating index. Data was analysed by SPSS 20.0. DASS scores were slightly higher in males than female, but it was not statistically significant. Depression, anxiety and stress in students has high negative effect in their social and personal lives. So there is a need for urgent attention to the psychological well-being of undergraduate medical students to improve their life style.

Introduction Excessive use and misuse of antibiotics worldwide, both in human medicine and in agriculture has led to increased occurrence of bacterial resistance. Medical students should be aware of the judicious use of antibiotics, so that they can help the general population in future. Present study assesses knowledge of antibiotic use among first year undergraduate medical students and their practice in own life. Materials and Methods An observational, cross sectional study was conducted during a three-month period among first year undergraduate medical students of a teaching hospital in Kolkata. A validated self- administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. The data were analyzed by using simple descriptive statistics. Wherever it was relevant, the Chi-square test was carried out to determine any significant difference. Results About 85% of the participants were aware of the indication of antibiotic for treating bacterial infections only. Around 44% of the students had an average knowledge score compared to 28% having good knowledge score. Majority (76%) of the medical students obtained last antibiotics by a doctor’s prescription, but 54% completed the course as advised by doctor and purpose of taking antibiotic was fever mainly (41%). Statistically significant (P< 0.05) difference on pattern of their antibiotic use was found according to their socioeconomic status and knowledge score. Conclusion Changing the prescribing behaviour and knowledge of the healthcare professionals can help a lot to achieve rational use of antibiotic. It is also suggested that giving a comprehensive training of antibiotic use to the medical students and creating their awareness about frequent antimicrobial resistance could be a successful and encouraging approach.

Background: To find the characteristics of an effective medical teacher, as perceived by the under graduate medical students who are at different stages of the MBBS course.Methods: A cross sectional study was done among all the undergraduate medical students studying in a medical college and hospital in Puducherry. The undergraduate students were visited in batches and students were explained regarding objectives and those who consented for the study were administered with a validated and pretested questionnaire in line with the objective of the study. The results are expressed in the form of proportions and percentages and the chi-square-test was used to test the significance of difference observed between different batches of studentResults: The most important qualities perceived by the students for being an effective medical teacher are creating interest in the subject, having good communication skills, providing good resource material, inspiring and motivating students, being easily approachable, respecting students/ patients / other staff, being enthusiastic, energetic and good listener. There is a significant difference in the perceived importance among different batch of students in the domain of teaching skills of a medical teacherConclusions: This study identified qualities of medical teachers related to their teaching skills, usage of teaching learning methods, approach towards students and their personal qualities that are perceived to be more important by medical students.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess perceptions of the educational environment in Oman among medical undergraduate students and interns using the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) tool. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2016 and April 2017 at the Oman Medical College (OMC), Sohar, Oman. A total of 737 medical undergraduate students and interns from the OMC and College of Medicine & Health Sciences of Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman, were invited to complete the DREEM questionnaire in the form of an online survey. Mean overall scores, subscale scores and individual item scores were subsequently compared between undergraduate students and interns. Results: A total of 418 undergraduate students and interns completed the survey (response rate: 56.7%). The mean overall DREEM score was 130.75 ± 12.69. While interns had higher mean DREEM scores than undergraduate students, this difference was not significant (133.00 ± 17.64 versus 128.50 ± 15.53; P = 0.326). The mean score percentages for the perceptions of learning (66.7% versus 58.3%; P = 0.028) and perceptions of teachers (75% versus 68.2%; P = 0.038) subscales were significantly higher among OMC interns compared to undergraduate students from the same college. The perceptions of the environment subscale received the lowest mean score percentages among undergraduate students and interns from both colleges. Conclusion: Overall, medical undergraduate students and interns viewed the educational environment in Oman in a positive light. It is possible that undergraduate students’ perceptions of the educational environment may become more favourable as they progress with their medical career and become interns.Keywords: Medical Education; Undergraduate Medical Students; Internships; Perceptions; Oman.

Background: Corneal blindness may be curable by keratoplasty but the demand for eye donation is however, unmet due to a variety of factors including knowledge gap. The purpose of this study was to assess the awareness of the medical undergraduate students towards eye donation and to assess the effectiveness of an orientation program in bridging the knowledge gap. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study done on MBBS students of 2nd and 3rd professional years. A pretested questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge of medical students. Knowledge regarding the contraindications to eye donation, the procedure involved and common misconceptions were assessed. This was followed by a session on orientation regarding eye donation. A second assessment using the same questionnaire was done after the session to assess the effectiveness of the same. The data was analysed using EPIINFO version 3.5.4 using chi square test. Results: Less than 50% students were aware of contraindications and less than 10% students knew ideal cornea harvesting time and nearest eye bank to their homes. Less than one-fourth students knew common causes of corneal blindness. However, most (77%) students were aware that hospital staff must motivate deceased’s family for eye donation. Significant increase in awareness was observed post orientation regarding most issues.Conclusions: This study shows that there is a knowledge gap amongst undergraduate medical students regarding eye donation. It also suggests that orientation sessions may be helpful in bridging this gap.

Abstract Objective: To compare the knowledge scores of basic medical subjects among undergraduate medical students of annual versus modular system. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 4th year undergraduate medical students of annual and modular system of Liaquat National Medical College, Pakistan. Study was conducted from 30th November 2017 to 1st June 2018 for a total of 6 months. Sample size was calculated to be 82 students. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire. The student’s t-test was applied to compare the mean difference of knowledge scores between the two groups. Results: Students in modular system retained better knowledge of anatomy as compared to annual students. While the annual system students retained higher knowledge in the subjects of community medicine and pharmacology. Mean knowledge score for annual was 12.98 (SD±2.92) and semester system students was 13.10 (SD±3.03). There was no significant difference observed in overall mean knowledge scores between the two groups (p-value = 0.85).  Conclusion: Students in the annual system scored higher in pharmacology and community medicine. This highlights the need to address the issues of time allocation and implementation strategies for the subjects in the new system.  There was no difference between overall knowledge scores in each group, hence it cannot be concluded that one system is superior to the other.
