Abstract Objective Nutritional assessment can early identify patients who are malnourished and at risk of malnutrition. To examine the effect of nutritional status on wound healing in elderly burn patients, we used the MNA-SF to measure the nutritional status of elderly patients. This study aimed to examine the role of MNA-SF in elderly burn patients through the correlation analysis of wound-healing indicators and MNA-SF score. Design Prospective observational and cross-sectional study. Methods This study used the MNA-SF to investigate the elderly burn patients at the department of burn. According to the score, the patients fell into three groups: good nutritional status (more than 12 points), malnutrition risk (8~11 points), and malnutrition (0~7 points). At the same time, we measured and compared the wound-healing indicators among the three groups of patients, and detected the correlation. Results The statistical analysis found gender had a slight influence on the score of nutritional status. While age was negatively correlated with the MNA-SF score and nutrition-related indicators. There was a low positive linear correlation between the wound healing percent area change or wound healing rate of patients and the score of the MNA-SF. Conclusion This study finds malnutrition is common among hospitalized elderly burn patients. The application of the MNA-SF in elderly burn patients is efficient and accurate to identify malnutrition early and prevent further obstruction of the normal wound healing, which can provide reference points for early nutrition intervention programs.

Nutrition is the second of two principal concepts (the first being infectious disease) in critical care not heavily emphasized in core anesthesiology training for reasons that are obvious. Optimal nutritional management is imperative to achieve positive outcomes in surgical patients. Wound healing, mobilization, and respiratory function are all particularly affected by nutritional status, and the optimal application assessment of nutrition directly affects surgical patients in the long term. Clinically, many physicians may take nutrition for granted and potentially conclude that it is not acutely important. Following consuming this content, the reader will be better equipped to educate their colleagues on the optimal assessment and application of perioperative nutrition. This chapter provides clinically useful and examination-oriented substrate to an equal degree, while being optimally digestible by the reader (no pun intended).

Appendicitis is part of the emergency cases that often occur in the abdominal area. Appendicitis is a prototype disease that takes place through inflammation due to obstruction and ischemia with the main symptoms which is pain that reflects the state of the disease. Appendicitis requires surgical appendectomy to reduce the risk of perforation. Apendectomy surgery is one type of wound that is an incision wound. The time of wound healing can be determined by the distinguishing between types of acute or chronic wounds. Appendectomy that does not have a post-surgical infection is categorized as an acute wound, physiologically the acute wound will heal ± 0-21 days. However, if the provision of nutrition is not fulfilled properly it will be almost the wound healing process. One factor that can influence the wound healing process is nutritional status. This study aim to determine the correlation of nutritional status with the wound healing process of post-appendectomy patients in RSUD Dr. H. Abdoel Moeloek, Bandar Lampung. This study used observational analytic with cross sectional approach. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling. The data were analyzed by using Chi-square test. From the Chi-square test found a relationship of nutritional status with a significant wound healing process (p <0.05) which is obtained p = 0.004, and the value obtained (OR = 10.5) can be said that adequate nutritional status is 10.5 times more likely to experience good wound healing when compared to undernourished nutritional status. There is a correlation between nutritional status and wound healing process in post-appendectomy patients.
