Decision-making in the field of education is a complex, multi-faceted process, in which a large circle of stakeholders is involved. Of no small importance for making a correct decision is the analysis of information coming from participants in the educational process at its various stages. The article proposes a methodology for constructing and applying a competency-based training direction model. The technique is based on the use of developed algorithms for building competency models. Due to the use of the Bayesian network, an assessment of the formation of the level of competence is possible even with missing data, i.e. with unknown results of competency-based tasks. The technique bridges the gap between strictly subject structuring of assessment tools, which does not fully correspond to the competency-building model of constructing the main educational program, and activity-based structuring. The article describes the conduct of two experiments conducted to verify the algorithms proposed in the theoretical part. Experimental testing showed that the developed algorithms, method and methodology are suitable for constructing a competency-based model of discipline and the direction of training. The models built according to the methodology, make it possible to make informed judgments regarding the level of students' competency levelling, as well as to predict student performance. Thus, using the methods of intellectual analysis of educational data, the tasks of decision support are solved.

The article substantiates the necessity to create an educational space for student development to solve problem nodes. The aim is to substantiate an experimental training model of students in the Pedagogical College. The organization of the educational process partly transfers to school base. This model of student training includes four components: the educational program, the results of student training, resources, and the college school interaction. The emphasis is placed on preparing students for professional activities through the development of professional competencies and solving professional problems. The article reveals three forms of organizing classes: immersion, workshop, and club. The student's training in this model is checked by a demo exam, in the playback of the model situation of the project task. Analysis of the results of the pilot study demonstrated that the implementation of the experimental model of student training provides productive interaction with employers. Introduction of experimental models of training contributed to enrich the psycho-pedagogical knowledge, improve professional skills, acquire terminology of project activities and methodology to students of pedagogical college. However, the model also helped to identify issues in need of improvement: the adjustment of the content of work programs in order to strengthen the practical training of students, the formation of a unified system of control assessment tools for assessing students' professional competencies for school teachers and college teachers, and also emphasized the need to organize and conduct reflexive analytical seminars.

The development of the pharmaceutical industry is one of the priority tasks of our state, aimed at providing the population of the Russian Federation with modern safe and effective medicines. The solution to this problem is impossible without the formation of a highly qualified personnel potential that meets the demand and expectations of the pharmaceutical market and society as a whole. In this regard, in the system of training of pharmacists in recent years, quite dynamic and flexible transformations have been taking place, dictated by the urgent needs of domestic health care. It should be noted that in the process of implementing this educational standard, the competency-based approach to organizing the process of training modern pharmacists comes to the fore. One of the effective tools for the formation of professional competencies in various educational fields is the case study method. Case study is a training method based on the analysis of real situations from various areas of professional activity and contributing to the development of specialist competency. The competency-based orientation of the case study method is in line with modern ideas about the organization of the educational process for the training of pharmacists. The case study method is actively used in the process of teaching disciplines of the curriculum of the Federal State Budget Educational Establishment of Higher Education KubGMU of the Ministry of Health of Russia, specialty 33.05.01 Pharmacy. Examples of case study tasks as educational technology are presented in the work programs of the curriculum disciplines of the specialty 33.05.01 Pharmacy developed at the Department of Pharmacy. Depending on the content of the taught discipline, these tasks simulate a particular situation from the professional activities of pharmacists, offered to students for a comprehensive analysis and evaluation. The use of this educational technology contributes to the integration of knowledge, skills acquired in the learning process and their competency-based profiling in accordance with the current level of development of domestic health care.

The author reveals the necessity of introducing into the educational and professional programs of preparation of masters of non-pedagogical specialties of the discipline "Didactics of higher education". Formation of pedagogical competences of the teacher of the higher school will allow the future specialists professional activity in the institutions of higher education. The article reveals the essence of didactic competence and peculiarities of its formation in higher education students in the current conditions of organizing the initial process. The competency approach should permeate all aspects of student training. Therefore, a special (didactic) competence should be included in the list of the graduates' learning outcomes. The didactic competence is the ability to apply knowledge of psychology and pedagogy (didactics) in the educational process of higher education institutions. In the orientation of the educational and professional program of the master of non-pedagogical specialties it is necessary to enter competencies that allow him to engage in teaching activities. General competences add to the ability to carry out pedagogical activities using innovative educational technologies, and special competences add to the ability to organize the educational process and carry out scientific research in order to solve topical problems of the theory, methodology, organization and practice of higher education students. One of the most important compulsory (normative) disciplines that enable the future specialist to teach special and professional disciplines in higher education institutions should be "Didactic of Higher Education". This is the main feature of forming didactic competence in higher education institutions. But the competent approach in higher education does not come down to a separate discipline, but because the phenomenon of integral and dynamic develops in the process of formal, non-formal and informal education and is in constant development and self-development. All stages of preparation of the master of non-pedagogical specialties for teaching activity should be directed on achievement of the main purpose of the educational process — formation of pedagogical competences of applicants of higher education.

AbstractMinimally invasive and robotic techniques have become increasingly implemented into surgical practice and are now an essential part of the foundational skills of training colorectal surgeons. Over the past 5 years there has been a shift in the surgical educational paradigm toward competency-based education (CBE). CBE recognizes that trainees learn at different rates but regardless, are required to meet a competent threshold of performance prior to independent practice. Thus, CBE attempts to replace the traditional “time” endpoint of training with “performance.” Although conceptually sensible, implementing CBE has proven challenging. This article will define competence, outline appropriate assessment tools to assess technical skill, and review the literature on the number of cases required to achieve competence in colorectal procedures while outlining the barriers to implementing CBE.

Abstract Background Literature suggests increasing evidence that incompetent midwifery education results in poor quality of care. The study compared and evaluated the level of compliance of the Armenian national criterion on midwifery with the global competency standards and developed recommendations for improvement. Methods The study team conducted a document review using a standardized checklist, which was adapted from the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) core assessment tools. The document review explored if the main knowledge and skills/ability related elements of each ICM competency were separately covered by different modules of the national criterion using a scoring system with categories: not met, partially met, fully met and unspecified. Results Although the national criterion did not have specifically defined competencies, most of the elements required by the ICM were present as specific learning outcomes under different modules of the criterion. Midwifery program curriculum was described as intensive with unnecessarily heavy workload. Additionally, the document review reviled that most of the learning outcome defined in modules of the national criterion focused more on theoretical knowledge rather than practical skills and abilities. Overall, the ICM required competency in provision of care during pregnancy was the most comprehensively covered one in the national criterion, while the competency in facilitation of abortion related care was the lowest covered. National criterion did not highlight the importance of topics such as women's rights and health, principles of epidemiology, statistical methods of research, cultural, local and ethical beliefs. Conclusions The systematic comparison of the national criterion with internationally recognized essential competencies demonstrates significant gaps. The study team recommends revisions to the national criterion to make it competency based. Key messages Midwifery education criteria in Armenia did not reflect internationally accepted midwifery competency’s fundamental philosophy and values. Given the shortcomings of the current national midwifery education criterion, a comprehensive revision of the competencies of midwives in Armenia should be considered.

Abstract Background The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada officially launched ‘Competence by Design’ in July 2017, moving from time-based to outcomes-based training. Transitioning to competency-based medical education (CBME) necessitates change in resident assessment. A greater frequency of resident observation will likely be required to adequately assess whether entrustable professional activities have been achieved. Purpose Characterize faculty and resident experiences of direct observation in a single paediatric residency program, pre-CBME implementation. Qualitatively describe participants’ perceived barriers and incentives to participating in direct observation. Methods Surveys were sent to paediatric residents and faculty asking for demographics, the frequency of resident observation during an average 4-week rotation, perceived ideal frequency of observation, and factors influencing observation frequency. Descriptive data were analyzed. Institutional research ethics board approval was received. Results The response rate was 54% (34/68 faculty and 16/25 residents). When asked the MAXIMUM frequency FACULTY observed a resident take a history, perform a physical examination, or deliver a plan, the median faculty reply was 1, 2, and 3, for outpatient settings and 0, 1, and 2, for inpatient settings. The median RESIDENT reply was 2, 4, and 10 for outpatient settings and 1, 2, and 20 for inpatient settings. When asked the MINIMUM frequency for each domain, the median FACULTY and RESIDENT reply was 0, except for delivering a plan in the inpatient setting. Faculty reported observing seniors delivering the plan more frequently than junior residents. Faculty and resident median replies for how frequently residents should be observed for each domain were the same, three to four, three to four, and five to six times. Four per cent of faculty reported regularly scheduling observations, and 77% of residents regularly ask to be observed. The most common barriers to observation were too many patients to see and both faculty and residents were seeing patients at the same time. Most faculty and resident responders felt that observation frequency could be improved if scheduled at the start of the rotation; faculty were provided a better tool for assessment; and if residents asked to be observed. Conclusions This study provides baseline data on how infrequent faculty observation is occurring and at a frequency lower than what faculty and residents feel is necessary. The time needed for observation competes with clinical service demands, but better scheduling strategies and assessment tools may help.

The growing availability of modern mobile smartphones and tablet computers is leading to an increase in the volume of content users consumed, including educational content. The development of mobile technologies opens up many opportunities for learning in higher education institutions. However, the use of mobile learning in student training should not be a spontaneous process, it is necessary to create pedagogically substantiate approaches and training methods. This article analyzes and interprets the results of existing research in pedagogy regarding the didactic potential of mobile learning in higher education system. A classification of didactic properties and functions of mobile learning is developed and proposed. The main didactic properties of mobile learning include: by the didactic feature of mobile learning — ten properties; by the technological feature of mobile learning — eleven properties. The main didactic functions of mobile learning are: by the didactic feature of mobile learning — eleven functions; by the technological feature of mobile learning — five functions. The didactic potential of mobile learning, due to its inherent didactic properties and functions, makes the educational process more effective, as well as contributes to the guaranteed achievement of students’ educational goals and planned learning outcomes.

Background: Despite the success of pharmacist-led interventions to improve medication adherence, pharmacists’ perspectives of these interventions are unknown. Our objective was to understand the pharmacists’ perspectives of a successful multifaceted intervention to improve medication adherence after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) hospitalization. Methods: We ascertained pharmacist perspectives’ through qualitative inquiry that included an open-ended survey, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group with the four pharmacists who participated in the intervention. Transcripts of surveys and interviews were analyzed using a content analysis approach. The intervention components included: 1) patient education; 2) assessment tools for potential medication adherence barriers; 3) collaborative care; and 4) automated medication refill reminders and educational messages. Pharmacists’ perspectives on each of these components were evaluated. Results: The pharmacists felt the intervention could be sustained in routine clinical care and identified key themes that facilitated intervention success. Pharmacists believed educating patients about their cardiovascular medications filled a gap in usual care. In addition, assessment tools that identified medication discrepancies and gaps in knowledge were helpful in tailoring patient education, while face-to-face conversations were more helpful in identifying mental and cognitive deficits that were barriers to adherence. Pharmacists also noted that the intervention led to the development of bi-directional relationships with patients through increased in-person and tele-health communication. As a result, poor adherence related to medication side effects was more readily addressed. Potential areas for improvement identified by the pharmacists included 1) emphasizing in-person visits to build relationships (begin the educational process while the patient is hospitalized and schedule both the follow-up clinic appointment and pharmacy visit at the same time); 2) utilizing the patient centered medical home concept to improve access to providers; 3) allowing sites to determine provider type to support the personal contact (i.e. pharmacist, nurse practitioner, registered nurse); and 4) employing interactive voice response (IVR) technology to facilitate communication. Conclusions: Pharmacists’ perspectives of a medication adherence intervention gave insights into reasons for the intervention success and suggestions for improvements and dissemination. We found that in-person meetings between pharmacists and patients led to bi-directional conversations and relationships with providers, which positively influenced patient adherence behavior. Future interventions designed to improve medication adherence should incorporate these pharmacist-identified factors.

AbstractIntroduction:Colleges and universities are experiencing increasing demand for online courses in many healthcare disciplines, including emergency medical services (EMS). Development and implementation of online paramedic courses with the quality of education experienced in the traditional classroom setting is essential in order to maintain the integrity of the educational process. Currently, there is conflicting evidence of whether a significant difference exists in student performance between online and traditional nursing and allied health courses. However, there are no published investigations of the effectiveness of online learning by paramedic students.Hypothesis:Performance of paramedic students enrolled in an online, undergraduate, research methods course is equivalent to the performance of students enrolled in the same course provided in a traditional, classroom environment.Methods:Academic performance, learning styles, and course satisfaction surveys were compared between two groups of students. The course content was identical for both courses and taught by the same instructor during the same semester. The primary difference between the traditional course and the online course was the method of lecture delivery. Lectures for the on-campus students were provided live in a traditional classroom setting using PowerPoint slides. Lectures for the online students were provided using the same PowerPoint slides with prerecorded streaming audio and video.Results:A convenience sample of 23 online and 10 traditional students participated in this study. With the exception of two learning domains, the two groups of students exhibited similar learning styles as assessed using the Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Style Scales instrument. The online students scored significantly lower in the competitive and dependent dimensions than did the on-campus students. Academic performance was similar between the two groups. The online students devoted slightly more time to the course than did the campus students, although this difference did not reach statistical significance. In general, the online students believed the online audio lectures were more effective than the traditional live lectures.Conclusion:Distance learning technology appears to be an effective mechanism for extending didactic paramedic education off-campus, and may be beneficial particularly to areas that lack paramedic training programs or adequate numbers of qualified instructors.

This paper examines the peculiarities of teaching German as a second foreign language in a railway university. The analysis emphasizes the inefficiency of traditional methods and the success of the bilingual approach, which consists in a harmonious combination of methodological principles of teaching the first and second foreign languages. The authors carry out a theoretical analysis of the fundamental principles of teaching a second foreign language: a comparative approach, the principle of reliance on the first foreign and native languages, an autonomous approach, a cognitive principle. The paper deals with the issues related to interference and transfer in teaching a second foreign language. Project methods (simulation, presentation speech, Lapbook-technology) tested by the author in the learning process are offered as learning technologies, the use of which facilitates effective mastering of foreign language skills and abilities. The syllabus of the course A Second Foreign language developed by teachers of the Rostov State Transport University in accordance with the new edition of the Federal State Educational Standard is analyzed. The conclusion is made that this syllabus satisfies the requirements put forward by methodologists to the process of teaching a second foreign language. The analysis of the organization of the educational process with the use of textbooks and a fund of assessment tools prepared for the course is expected to be the subject of our further research.
