scholarly journals Examination of Traffic Congestion and Remedial Measures, Coimbatore City

During the past few years, there has been high growth of demand for road transportation .The volume of road traffic has increased continuously over years due to the increase in the vehicle population, buying power, rented cab services, increasing economy activities and urbanisation. Road accidents and traffic congestion impose a burden on the society. Reducing the traffic congestion and road accidents are very important for efficient road transportation. With the increase in population in Coimbatore, the number of vehicles also increased. An effort has been made to study the traffic volume of Avinashi Road NH47, Trichy Road, NH81, Sathy Road NH209, Mettupalayam Road NH67 and Other Corporations Road . The vehicle population in Coimbatore has increased at an alarming rate. In the year 2014-15, around 27100 two wheelers, 4800 cars and 1800 other transport vehicles have been registered. In the year 2015-16, 33000 two wheelers, 6700 cars and 3040 other vehicles have been registered. The increase in the percentage comes to 20%, 40%, 40% respectively during the years 2014-15, 2015-16. Coimbatore has a large number of floating population. The traffic on its roads has increased so much that it often becomes very difficult to cross a road. During the peak hours of the day, we find an unending stream of buses, trucks, cars, tempos, scooters, motor-cycles and cycles are seen in many roads. Most of the drivers of the vehicles do not observe traffic rules. Other than this, accident data opinion survey was also carried to know the problems faced by the pedestrians. After analyzing all the data, remedial measures such as widening of road, removal/ relocation of bus stops, implementation of speed brakers and introduction of manned and unmanned traffic signals are suggested in the study area. An overall analysis was carried out to determine the effects of introducing the remedial measures. It is found that the traffic congestion can be reduced if the remedial measures are implemented.

Abstract Analysis of road traffic accidents revealed that most accidents are as a result of drivers’ errors. Over the years, active safety systems (ASS) were devised in vehicle to reduce the high level of road accidents, caused by human errors, leading to death and injuries. This study however evaluated the impacts of ASS inclusions into vehicles in Nigeria road transportation network. The objectives was to measure how ASS contributed to making driving safer and enhanced transport safety. Road accident data were collected, for a period of eleven years, from Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Central Office of Statistics. Quantitative analysis of the retrospective accident was conducted by computing the proportion of yearly number of vehicles involved in road accident to the total number of vehicles for each year. Results of the analysis showed that the proportion of vehicles involved in road accidents decreased from 16 in 1996 to 0.89 in 2006, the injured persons reduced from 15.58 in 1998 to 0.3 in 2006 and the death rate diminished from 4.45 in 1998 to 0.1 in 2006. These represented 94.4 %, 95 % and 95 % improvement respectively on road traffic safety. It can therefore be concluded that the inclusions of ASS into design of modern vehicles had improved road safety in Nigeria automotive industry.

The increasing volume of traffic in cities has a significant effect on road traffic congestion and the travel time it takes for road users to reach their destinations. Coordinating traffic signals, which is a system of light that cascade in sequence where a platoon of vehicles can travel through a continuous series of green light without stopping, can improve the driver's experience significantly. This report covers the development of a coordinated traffic signal system along Wellington Street West from Church Street to Blue Jays Way Street as part of a City of Toronto signal coordination project. The objective of this study is to improve coordination through modification of signal timing plans while maintaining reasonably minimal impacts to the side street levels of service and delays. The overall goal is to reduced travel times, delays, number of stops and fuel consumption, resulting in public benefit.

This research is conducted in order to deal with the main problem of traffic congestion and road accidents that is basically caused because of the improper parking management. . Hence, it is important that cities have a well-managed parking system. In the past various researches has been done to design a suitable smart paring algorithm. However, each research had their own pros and cons. Our research leads to a smart algorithm that is secure and is convenient enough to develop a system that can be manage the available slots and can notify the users about the available parking slot beforehand to the client. The result analysis clearly shows that the algorithm proposed and designed is more accurate than other algorithms used in the past. The proposed algorithm is designed using ACO, decision tree, and GPS mapping. The idea of working on this research was to provide a solution that is cost effective, helps people on large scale and maintains the laws and order.

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) have turned out to be a huge global public health and development problem causing enormous economic and social costs. Therefore RTA has become a major concern and analyzing accident data has been an important look out to the analysts in order to find the major factors related to the accidents, and to predict the future road accidents in order to mitigate and/or eliminate them in the future. The study revealed that the main contributing factor is the human. The predominant type of crashes was run over with 53% of the total crashes.Approximately, 53% of crashes occurred on major roads, 58% of crashed occurred during day time, drivers with group ages between 24 – 29 years’ experience more crashes, and single vehicle accidents result in more casualty (fatality and injuries) compared to multi-vehicleaccidents. The most important resultobtainedfrom this study, a prediction model which link accidents with the number of registered vehicles and population.

In our country almost all the states are facing traffic congestion severely, mainly in urban areas. The road accidents are increasing because of the traffic blockage which ruin the human lives. Due to population increase, the numbers of the regions are widening and the number of vehicles is also rising. Traffic is the main factor contributing to accident and it also causes some delay in getting to the destination. Thus traffic managing and regulating is the main traffic management problem. The ambulance and the traffic signals are integrated with some embedded systems to find out the accident spot through GPS. The accidents are determined by fixing the sensors in it. This paper provides an idea in order to control the accidents by implementing a solution where Traffic signals are dynamically operated in its way and traffic congestion rates are lowered

The high growth of the population in Malang will trigger an increase in the activity of its, resulting in increased traffic. Increased traffic demands will add to traffic congestion problems on roads and intersections. One way of traffic engineering to improve signaled intersection performance is to equip traffic signals with countdown timers. This additional instrument serves to inform the duration of the signal setup time. This study aims to determine the effect of countdown timer use on saturation flow, performance and safety factor signalized intersection in Malang. The paired sample t-teste statistical method is used to see the influence of the countdown timer on saturation flow, and the impact on the performance and safety of the intersection arm. The use of countdown timer can increase the value of saturation flow, so the capacity of the intersection also increased 5-22% with decreasing delay time 5-13 sec/smp. But the less positive impact on the safety factor intersection, because there is an increase in the movement of vehicles before the green time.

Insufficient road safety level remains a serious problem in Ukraine. The number of people killed in road accidents in 2018 per 100 thousand of population is 9,11, while in the countries of the European Union, on average, this indicator is 5-6 deaths per 100 thousand of population. The growing number of vehicles and road users increases the likelihood of road accidents and, accordingly, the number of the suffered people increases. This regularity can be noted not only in our country, but also in the countries over the world. Method of prospective extrapolation is proposed for the prevention of road accidents which makes it possible to transfer the trends and links connected with the occurrence of road accidents in the past to the current period and for the future. To apply this method, it is necessary to have a qualitative statistical analysis of the road accident data. This provides an opportunity to foresee the occurrence of a particular type of accident, its location and the causes affecting its occurrence. By using the prospective extrapolation method, it is possible to reduce the number of road accidents and the severity of their consequences, including reducing the number of fatal accidents to a minimum.
