Construction-related conflict is one of the issues that require considerable attention in the construction industry. Hence, this study intends to identify the factors causing conflict among the construction players in Sarawak, Malaysia. Simple random sampling was used to select the respondents for this research. Respondents for this research comprised contractors, consultants, and clients in organizations. Out of 196 distributed copies of the questionnaire, a total of 80 copies were completed and returned amounting to40.81% response rate. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to obtain descriptive statistics. The Relative Importance Index (RII) was used to rank the factors causing conflict. A total of twenty-five (25) factors were identified. Insufficient funding was ranked the most severe among factors causing the client-related conflict. Changes in design was ranked first among factors causing the contractor-related conflict. Poor contract management was ranked first among the factors causing the consultant-related conflict. The findings in this research complement the existing body of knowledge on construction-related disputes. This research has provided a better understanding of the factors that could lead to conflicts among the construction players during the execution of construction projects.

Resource Planning and Leveling are two critical areas of resource management which need to be implemented by contractors to aid in construction project execution. However, in the process of undertaking these processes in their projects, contractors meet a number of challenges which discourage them from implementing Resource Planning and Leveling. Nonetheless, Resource Planning and Leveling has a number of benefits which may not be known by some contractors. The purpose of this research therefore was to establish and evaluate the challenges and benefits associated with Resource Planning and Leveling. A survey design was adopted by the researcher. A sample of 106 respondents was selected randomly and a response rate of 76% was achieved. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics and relative importance index analysis while qualitative data was analysed thematically. Contractors were found to experience serious challenges in their quest to execute Resource Planning and Leveling in their projects. The three most pressing challenges experienced by contractors were found to be: project delays (RII=0.8597); technical incompetence (RII=0.8564); materials shortages or late delivery (RII=0.8390). A number of benefits were found to entice contractors to carry out Resource Planning and Leveling in their projects. The three most significant benefits were: establishing plans for material delivery (RII=0.9215); balanced resources, reducing over allocations or overtime (RII=0.9165) and determining or predicts resources needed (RII=0.9139).

The research evaluates the drivers toward positioning Nigerian construction industry for global competitiveness in the 21st century. Being a survey research, questionnaires containing information relating to issues and drivers on global competitiveness were administered to selected construction practitioners in Anambra State, Nigeria. Accordingly, a total of 84 questionnaires were administered out of which 80 copies were completed, returned and found useful.  This corresponds to a response rate of 95%. Data collected were analyzed and presented using mean score, percentages, relative importance index (RII) and tables. The study found that the identified twelve (12) drivers of global competitiveness were all significant in the study area. However, the most perceived significant drivers for global competitiveness in the study area is labour market efficiency. Also, the study observed that the Nigerian construction industry operates at the level of factor-driven economy. Therefore, the study concluded by recommending that construction firms must   find appropriate strategies that would help to improve and strengthen their digital innovation, institutional, technological and infrastructural needs. This will place them in good standing for global competitiveness in the future.

The construction industry is recognized as one of the most hazardous industries globally. Moreover, the rising trend of urbanization in many developing countries has ushered in a new era of high-rise construction, thus increasing the frequency of hazards related to working at height. Accident records in Saudi Arabia reveal that the construction industry accounted for 46.4% of industrial accidents, while fall-related injury accounted for 27% of the recorded injuries. Scaffolding is the most common access equipment used to work at height. Thus, the first stage in controlling the risks of falls from a height may be to identify the causes of scaffold accidents. This study presents 36 causes of scaffold accidents classified into five relevant groups, which have been identified through a thorough review of the extant literature. Additionally, the causes have been arranged in a survey designed based on a Likert scale of importance. Subsequently, 120 copies were administered to construction professionals in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, with a 75% response rate. The Relative Importance Index (RII) was adopted to analyze the feedback. The results revealed that the top three causes of scaffold accidents include: “insufficient bracing/anchorage” (RII of 0.927), “scaffolding erected by incompetent professionals” (RII of 0.926), and “missing/faulty guardrails” (RII of 0.919). This study is of potential benefit to concerned stakeholders in the construction industry.

The construction industry is one of the major sectors that provide important ingredients for the development of country’s economy. A survey is conducted to identify the major causes of construction delays, its effects, and minimizing delays in construction projects using relative importance index method. The questionnaire was circulated among various construction companies located in India to find the reasons which are affecting the construction projects in India. The various factors are identified for this purpose and these critical factors are then categorized into owner, contractor, consultant, material, design, labor, equipment and external factors. About fifty six responses are received for the analysis purpose. SPSS software is applied to perform the analysis. The survey is concentrated on the frequency of occurrence of this factors and what is the severity of this factors in the five point scale.

Total Quality Management (TQM) is based on the conceptions of managing and enhancing the success of construction projects. When applied, TQM improves execution of time management of project, satisfies clients’ needs, minimizes the expenses and increases the profit of contractor, and fulfils safety regulations on the construction site. This research is aimed at evaluating the impacts of employing the concepts of TQM to the construction projects in Saudi Arabia. The results of the study were obtained through utilization of a descriptive analytical approach, where 300 questionnaires were distributed to engineering firms and companies with a response rate of 200 questionnaires, hence achieving the study sample for this research. The data gathered was analyzed by applying the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) program and calculating the relative importance index (RII) and the mean values. From the research conducted, the outcomes showed that the management’s ability to commit using TQM while applying BIM obtained a relative importance of (0.717), while the relative importance for the management’s ability to commit using TQM without the application of BIM is (0.552). The results showed that construction projects in Saudi Arabia still sustain setbacks from applying TQM concepts and suffer from the lack of administrative, scientific, and technical applications.

Delay in construction projects is a universal phenomenon. However, the topic is not adequately studied in the Indian context. This paper attempts to identify the causes of delays in construction of budget hotels in India and suggest remedies to avoid some delays. A business group constructing budget hotels across the country is approached for this study. Forty causes of delay have been identified and Relative Importance Index was calculated. The contribution of each category of causes of delay to overall delay in the projects was computed. Remedies such as, joint effort of the participants of the industry, training, coordination between project participants and project timing and scheduling are suggested and validated.

Purpose Over the past decade, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) introduced several green regulatory guidelines, federal decrees, and a considerable number of environmentally friendly initiatives. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the top green materials and systems used currently in the UAE construction industry as per the new laws dictate as well as see if professionals are switching over to incorporate more green materials, systems, and/or designs. Design/methodology/approach The work involved reviewing internationally popular green materials and systems for construction, developing a questionnaire based on the literature review, surveying professionals in the seven UAE emirates, and ranking the findings based on the relative importance index. Findings Findings found the top used green materials and system in the UAE’s construction industry. As well as identified that there is a communication gap between the design and implementation phases that is possibly hindering the use of more green materials and systems. Originality/value This study sets a baseline to measure the UAE’s progress over the coming years in terms of integrating more green construction materials, systems, methodologies, and trends.

Background: Everyone would want to enjoy their old age in a healthy condition both physically and spiritually, but the fact is that old age is more synonymous with periods of decline in physical, mental, and human interest. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to Identify the description of understanding the meaning of life from a health perspective for the elderly at the Panti Griya Werdha Jambangan in Surabaya. Methods: This study is a quantitative study with a descriptive design. The population in this study were all the elderly who live in the home for the werdha Jambangan with a total of 60 elderly and the sample used was 56 respondents using simple random sampling. The variable in this study is the understanding of the meaning of life from a health perspective in the elderly. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and presented in a frequency distribution table. Results: The results showed that out of 56 elderly people at the Werdha Jambangan Nursing Home in Surabaya, 73.2% of the respondents were 60-74 years old, 73.2% were female, and most of them 55.4% had an understanding of the meaning of a moderate life. Conclusion: Getting an understanding of the meaning of life requires a long and continuous process. A person who already has an understanding of the meaning of his life will be more prosperous and happier in life.Key words: Understanding the meaning of life, health perspective, elderly

This study seeks to examine the relationship between Entrepreneurship practices and the level of profitability among farmers in Jos. The study covered small and medium scale farmer entrepreneurs within Jos North, Jos South and Jos East. A sample size of 518 was obtained from the population of 834 at 5% error tolerance and 95% level of confidence, using Simple Random Sampling. A self-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. 505(97.5%) of the questionnaire distributed were returned. The study conducted a pre-test on the questionnaire to ensure the validity of the instrument. Data collected were presented in descriptive statistics and frequency tables. The study used financial ratios such as the gross profit margin, net profit margin, returns on assets, sales per year and total assets measures were used to measure the profitability. The average values for gross profit margin, net profit margin and returns on assets are 29.47%, 19.2% and 8.2% respectively; the result shows that an individual farmer in this study can boast of a high level of profit. The study recommends among other things that governments at all levels should work to create a more conducive environment for farmer entrepreneurs to make profitable investments in agriculture.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reveal the main causes of delays in the projects are from the client (relative importance index (RII)=0.716), labor and equipment (RII=0.701) and contractor (RII=0.698). Hence determining the contractual responsibility of delay is the most likely source of dispute in construction projects and many techniques have been used in the courts to demonstrate the criticalities of a delay event on the project schedule. Therefore, authors try to investigate all process-based techniques of delay claims and evaluated and conformed them with principles by Society of Construction Law (SCL) protocol and Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering International (AACEI) in order to choose the best techniques based on the specific circumstances of each project. Design/methodology/approach This section is divided into two distinct parts: refers to the methods used to assess the perceptions of clients, consultants, and contractors on the relative importance of causes of delay in construction industry; and refers to advantages and disadvantages of various techniques used to analyze delays and their conform with SCL protocol. A questionnaire was developed to assess the perceptions of clients, consultants, and contractors on the relative importance of causes of delay in Iranian construction industry. The respondents were asked to indicate their response category on 78 well-recognized construction delay factors identified by authors. Findings In total, 78 causes of delay were identified through research. The identified causes are combined into seven groups. The field survey included 58 contractors, 55 consultants, and 62 client. Data collected were analyzed by RII and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The authors identified main causes of delay and ten most important causes, according to Table AII, from the perspective of three major groups of participants (clients, consultants and contractors). The ranking of categories of causes of delay, according to Table I, were: client-related causes (RII=0.716); labor and equipment category causes (RII=0.701); contractor-related causes (RII=0.698); material-related causes (RII=0.690); design-related causes (RII=0.666); external causes (RII=0.662); and consultant-related causes (RII=0.662). But according to the discussions and given that determining the contractual responsibility of delay is the most likely source of dispute in construction industry and many techniques have been used in the courts to demonstrate the criticalities of a delay event on the project schedule. Originality/value All process-based techniques of delay analysis have been present in this paper and categorized in 11 groups. In order to understand the advantages and disadvantages of them by clients, contractor and consultant, a thorough review conducted to reveal the nature of techniques. In the next step, given that selecting the most appropriate technique based on constraints and specific conditions of each project is one of the most important steps to carry out a successful delay analysis. The authors conformed, all process-based techniques of delay analysis, by SCL protocol and AACEI principles. Finally, the result of this match was brought in order to choose the best technique based on the specific circumstances of each project.
