Heritage is the one need to be appreciated, cherished and preserved. Loss of identity of any place, event, culture or structure without understanding it, results in failure of meaning for settlement. Temple gopuram is the established sign and symbol of an urban space in the regions occupied by Hindu people where ever they settle. It orients people in the known or unknown environment. On a macro level, it acts as gateway, way finder, gives urban identity, adds imageablity, to micro level it directly influences the human actions and feelings. This study sets out to explore, how the perceptual qualities of the gopuram affect person’s memory and perception. The investigation was carried out with questionnaires to the students of number 32, visited the rural space for their case study purpose. The parameters of perceptual qualities were considered as the visual, social and cognitive image. The result shows that the perceptual quality depends on the visual and the cognitive image parameters than the social image. Though the visit is for a short duration of time of one week or for one day, the Rajagopuram structure influence of the observer in a major way and for the inhabitants it adds a symbol of identity to the place.

The requirement of communities to new urban elements has changed urban space and proportional to modern community. These changes have been realized in new urban texture within modernism framework and also in old texture as wearing framework and converted them into ill urban spaces. Removing balance in social life may appear in public scenes at historic textures with which a modern element competes including street. In order to find the most efficient strategy to compensate such imbalance, reassessment of access route networks may work effectively. This approach should notice two types of determinant factors in the path toward achievement of the main goal that is resuming comprehensive balance to life in historic texture: On the one hand, using of potential in the available communication network and on the other hand redefinition of historic elements may play role in strategic situations as the linking elements. Rather than referring to definition of vitality and responsiveness in an urban space in this article, it has been dealt with subject of reclamation and renewal of these textures that also caused responsiveness and vitality in historic urban space as well and finally Yazd Khan Plaza has been mentioned as case study in this investigation. Yazd Khan Plaza is subject to imbalance in social life as one of the social scenes in historic Yazd city due to its adjacency to street lines from Pahlavi period. This article is codified according to the aforesaid approach and proposing of executive strategies in order to resume the balance in vitality and comprehensive dynamism by strengthening and creating networks of communication walk to this precious historic complex.

This article tries to reconstruct the world of the property-owning, mortgage-holding and money-lending women in late colonial Bengal and especially in Calcutta, the commercial capital of British India until the First World War. It argues that as all poor women occupying the urban space were not either sex workers or domestic servants, similarly all middle-class women in colonial Calcutta were not dependent housewives, teachers and doctors. At least a section of them engaged in other gainful economic activities. However, existing scholarship sheds very little light on those women who chose other means of survival than the bhadramahila: those who bought and sold houses, lent money for interest, acquired mortgages, speculated in jute trade and even managed indigenous banking business. Evidence of court records suggests that they, along with the lady teacher, the lady doctor, the midwife and the social worker or later members of political organisations, could be found in considerable numbers in late colonial Calcutta. Due to the enactment of stringent laws to control moneylending, on the one hand, and the commercial decline of Calcutta, on the other hand, these women were possibly driven out of the shrinking market of the 1940s and 1950s.

However, data on the characteristics of crafts are not yet available comprehensively. This study aims to explore the characteristics of Gorontalo water hyacinth craft to uncover the potential and problems. The study used qualitative methods of case study models. The data were collected through observation, interviews, testing, and literature study. Data were analyzed interactively through selection and coding, categorization, data display and discussion, and conclusions. The results showed that Gorontalo water hyacinth craft has characteristics in aspects: crafters, production technology, products, and distribution that reflect the potential and problems. The characteristics of the crafters are experts in production skills but weak in design innovation. The characteristic of production technology is the potential in the availability of raw materials and systematic work methods. However, it is problematic in the modernization of production equipment and the division of labor. A characteristic in terms of products is its potential in product diversity but problems in standardizing size and ergonomics. The characteristics of the distribution aspect include the potential in marketing products in various ways but problems in the promotion and improvement of the social image of the product. This finding can be used as a reference to formulating the concept of developing Gorontalo water hyacinth craft appropriately or other similar crafts.

Existence of a heritage / historical structure is the one that adds meaning to urban or rural space. The perceptual quality of the structure enhances the aesthetic sense to the settings or place. The aesthetic sense makes the place, a visual appealing entity with augment of identity. It develops a sign and symbol to the place. Without that, the meaning is lost, identity is destroyed and placelessness is formed. Urbanization and globalization always concentrate more on development, without understanding the basic meaning and cultural heritage of any built environment with its tangible and intangible aspects. This paper explores the ideas and thought process of the architects, urban design theorists, and psychologist in considering perceptual qualities of a structure and it turns in relation with the feature of a Dravidian style Rajagopuram that acts as an entrance gate way to a heritage precinct .

Populations in contemporary cities are being measured, analyzed, or represented in less than optimal ways. Conventional methods of measuring density of populations in cities rely on calculating the number of people living within a bounded surface space. This approach fails to account for the multiple floor residential patterns of the contemporary urban landscape and exposes the vertical space problem in population analytics. To create an accurate representation of people in contemporary urban spaces, a move beyond the conventional conception of density is needed. This research aims to find a more appropriate solution to mapping humans in cities by employing a dasymetric method to represent the distribution of people in a city of vertical residential structures. The methodology creates an index to classify the amount of floor space for each person across the extent of the city, a metric called the personal space measure. The personal space measure is juxtaposed with the conventional population density measurements to provide a unique perspective on how population is concentrated across the urban space. The personal space metric demonstrates how improved metrics can be employed to better understand the social and structural landscape of cities. Chicago, with a large population and a high vertical extent, makes an ideal case study to develop a methodology to capture the phenomena of urban living in the 21st century and to explain alternative approaches to accurately and intelligently analyze the contemporary urban space.

In recent decades, social sustainability has become the center of many researchers and planners’ attention. In this regard, one of the main approaches to achieve social sustainability is paying attention to the role of rural municipalities. Regarding the importance of this subject, the current study aimed to evaluate the rural municipalities’ performance in the achievement of social sustainability in the Central District of Nimrouz County. The current study is of applied type in terms of objective and it is of descriptive-analytical type in terms of methodology. The data collection instruments were questionnaires and interviews, and the statistical population included the rural households in the central district of Nimrouz County. The data were analyzed by the One-Sample t-test and the variance analysis and multivariable regression were also used to evaluate the rural governor’s (Dehtar) performance. The results indicated that rural governors’ performance in the social sustainability of the villages under study has managed to grab local villagers’ satisfaction and it was at an appropriate level.

As part of discourse in the social sciences, economics textbooks written in English in which knowledge has been transferred to other languages through translation have brought a certain impact on both the target language and the target culture. In terms of ideology, this article argues about the hegemonic status of the dominant language or culture that creates socalled epistemicide or the erosion of knowledge, partly due to translation strategies adopted by the translator. Investigation is done using the corpusbased approach, theories of translation strategies and the comparative model. The study reveals that the translator in the macro-level text adopts the ideology of foreignising strategy rather than domesticating strategy when translating an economics textbook from English into Indonesian. This is supported by the use of the number of the source language-orientated translation techniques leading to two translation methods (i.e. literal translation and faithful translation) adopted in the micro-level text. This research strongly supports another relevant study pertaining to the globalisation of knowledge through translation and also the translation theories of equivalence (i.e. overt and covert translation). The research findings also have some pedagogical implications on teaching English for Specific Purposes in higher education.

The nature (of) our urban facts: productions of space and environmental degradation Abstract This work intends to discuss the relation among the process of construction of the urban space, the social-spacial segregation and the environmental degradation. The growing urbanisation of the Brazilian population has led the problems which come from such process – lack of infrastructure, unsuitable densification of areas, environmental degradation, social-space segregation – to centralize the discussion of governmental rulings, technicians and social scientists. So, it’s worthy to ask: why our cities do not have the quality we want, even after several initiatives advocated by the public policies to revert these negative trends? Our interest here is to discuss such questions from the particular case of Curitiba city, the one which, despite of being standing out itself throughout well-succeded experiences of planning, follows the Brazilian patterns related to the social-spacial segregation. We understand that the discussion of urban questions must be focused on the elements which contribute to the social-spacial segregation and on the possibilities and limits of the public policies to answer in a positive way to their overcoming. From the knowledge of the production logic of the space, this work intends to check out the possibilities of integration of the urban policies, with the aim of promoting the increasing of the environmental quality.

The emergence of social network sites as a part of everyday life has given rise to a number of debates on the demo- cratic potential afforded by these technologies. This paper addresses political participation facilitated through Facebook from a practice-oriented perspective and presents a case study of the political grassroots organisation, Fight For The Future. Initially, the paper provides a basic theoretical framework that seeks to map the relation between civic practices, materiality, and discursive features. Using this framework, the article analyses Fight For The Future’s use of Facebook to facilitate political participation. The study finds that user participation on the Facebook page is ‘double conditioned’ by the material structure of the social network site on the one hand and by the discourses articulated by the organisation and users on the other. Finally, the paper discusses the findings and raises a number of problems and obstacles facing participatory grassroots organisations, such as Fight For The Future, when using Facebook.
