This article reported a simple survey on diploma students’ attitudes towards science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) objectively to get an initial impression of students taking a STEM-related diploma program. The targeted respondents were diploma students pursuing computer science programs in a Malaysian public university. A quantitative approach using a quantitative survey was used in which data were systematically elicited from 16 male and 17 female students using a questionnaire containing Likert-scale items. The questionnaire consists of three constructs: attitude toward science (8 items), attitude toward technology and engineering (8 items), and attitude toward mathematics (8 items). All constructs use a 5-point Likert scale for the response scale (1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree). Descriptive analysis showed that the respondents’ attitude ranged between moderately to highly positive towards STEM with no significance different variation between genders across the STEM fields. Interestingly, they also had, generally, moderate consideration for careers in STEM fields (the average values ranged between 27.2% and 42.4%) with male respondents had very low agreements (18.7%) to consider careers related to technology and engineering fields. Such results were a bit discouraging as the respondents were all pursuing a diploma in computer science. Thus, more efforts are needed by the university to give more exposures and experiences to refine the students’ attitude during their study, to boost their confidence and interest to pursue a career suitable with their diploma certificates.

Women who have not yet entered science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields underestimate how well they will perform in those fields (e.g., Correll, 2001 ; Meece, Parsons, Kaczala, & Goff, 1982). It is commonly assumed that female role models improve women’s beliefs that they can be successful in STEM. The current work tests this assumption. Two experiments varied role model gender and whether role models embody computer science stereotypes. Role model gender had no effect on success beliefs. However, women who interacted with nonstereotypical role models believed they would be more successful in computer science than those who interacted with stereotypical role models. Differences in women’s success beliefs were mediated by their perceived dissimilarity from stereotypical role models. When attempting to convey to women that they can be successful in STEM fields, role model gender may be less important than the extent to which role models embody current STEM stereotypes.

This study aims at examining students’ perception of peer evaluation in a group oral presentation by English for Academic Purposes (EAP) students at the University of Indonesia. Questionnaires were administered after the peer evaluation process to 65 students studying EAP taught at the University of Indonesia. The peer assessment was incorporated into the course to seek out whether and to what extent their speaking skills may enhance and to investigate students’ attitudes towards this form of evaluation in oral presentations. Data were obtained through a Likert scale questionnaire of peer evaluation. Data were analyzed using SPSS Software. The results specified a statistically significant result of the use of peer evaluation in oral presentation. The findings of the present study suggest that, when assessment criteria are definitely established, peer assessment empowers students to evaluate the performance of their peers in a manner comparable to those of the teachers. The responses from the questionnaires show that the evaluation and comments given by students were considered fair, useful and sufficient. Results also suggest that students strongly agree to the use of this methodology because comments and evaluations given are useful for making improvements. Nevertheless, the students preferred teachers to peers to evaluate their performance in the discussion and they wanted to get more instructive comments from the teachers. As for its limitations, students highlight the responsibility that comes with it and a certain amount of distrust in fellow students’ abilities to peer-assess. The teacher’s possible roles in peer evaluation are presented at the conclusion of this study.

The aim of this paper focuses on the results of a Delphi study carried out to design and to validate the content of an “ad hoc” opinion questionnaire. The questionnaire has been developed to know the counselors’ opinion on how the Asturian centers attend to diversity in primary and secondary stages. It was based on an instrument previously carried out, which was submitted to a pilot test in which 51 secondary school counselors participated (N = 51). In order to adapt the validity of the content to the two stages (primary and secondary), a quantitative and qualitative Delphi study was carried out in which 9 experts participated. The study was developed in two rounds and through different tasks in order to submit the blocks in which the questionnaire is structured to expert judgment. These blocks collect information on personal and professional variables and center data, on a Likert scale of 48 items and open questions. A content analysis of the qualitative information was carried out and a descriptive analysis of the mean, standard deviation and percentage of agreement in relation to the criteria adopted to consider an item as valid. The result is a questionnaire composed of five blocks: three of them collect information on identification and classification variables (sociodemographic, professional and center data). The fourth block is a Likert scale of 45 items and five response alternatives (1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree).

Abstract:This research has analyzed the attitudes towards mathematics in university education and its relationship with the variables gender and ethnicity. This is a quantitative study based on a descriptive design that provided a scale of attitude towards mathematics to 876 men and women, university students of the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast. A descriptive analysis of the data, a correlation analysis, student t-tests and analysis of variance with the HSD-Tukey test were carried out with the statistical package for the social sciences SPSS. The results confirm that students' attitudes towards mathematics are moderate with a high tendency; the utility factor presents a higher coefficient of correlation with respect to the pleasure, the confidence and the motivation, which can explain that the anxiety towards the mathematics is smaller in the student's; men and women show the same degree of attitude toward mathematics; and finally, attitudes towards mathematics is a positive element in the ethnicity variable, characterized by different attitudinal factors in the Miskito, Mayangna, Creole and Mestizo ethnic groups, this is due to the way of learning and doing mathematics by each ethnic group. It is concluded, through this study, that the attitudes towards mathematics and its relationship with the variable gender and ethnicity are present in university students.

This study is to identify the involvement of academicians on the teaching of the hadith. The contribution of the academicians to the teaching of the hadith is also very much needed so that Muslims can acknowledge al-Sunnah closely. The academicians were selected from Academic of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya Islamic Studies Academy, the National University of Malaysia, the Islamic Science University of Malaysia and the International Islamic University which they are all from various fields of Islamic Studies. The methodology used in this study is a questionnaire which is group sampling. The researcher distributes the questionnaire to the academic staff at the university involved. Based on this descriptive analysis of the questionnaire, it can be concluded that academic practitioners either in the field of hadith or other fields are involved and contribute to the teaching of hadith such as in public universities and other institutions. This shows that most academicians have good knowledge related to the field of hadith. Therefore, they are among the most suitable as references to the community in solving Sunnah and bidaah issues, especially the academicians who are experts in the field of hadith.
