This experiment was conducted and aimed to reducing mortality and losing the weight of birds transported to the slaughter house through reducing or Transport stress removal and thus to reduce financial losses. 150 birds used almost equal weights that were divided into three treatment groups and by five replicates for each treatment is control treatment (T1) without giving anything and treatment with salicylic acid concentration 1 g / liter of drinking water (T2) and treatment with ascorbic acid (T3) concentration 0.5 g / Liter of drinking water provided 24 hours before its transport. The transport process resulted in a highly significant decrease (P ≤ 0.01) in body weight in treatment T1 as it reached 4.66%, while it reached 1.68 and 1.09% in treatment T2 and T3, respectively. The transport process led to an increase in body temperature, H / L ratio, the concentration of glucose, aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) in the blood serum, as the transport process led to a very significant decrease (P ≤ 0.01) in the cholesterol concentration, Uric acid, intestinal villi length and crypts depth. T2 and T3 treatments showed their ability to reduce transport stress, especially T3, where they outperformed T1 in most traits. It is concluded from the study that adding ascorbic acid by 0.5 g / L drinking water 24 hours before transporting the chicks to the slaughter house reduces the transport stress and lessen financial losses, so it is recommended to use it.

The aim of the study is to determine the effect of different levels of Flaxseed powder (FP) as a source of omega-3 on the chemical characteristics of Karadi carcass lambs. Twenty male Karadi lambs aged 4-5 months were used in this study with an average live-weight of 28.00 ± 0.40 kg. The animals were randomly divided into four treatments (FP was added at the levels of 3%, 6% and 9% compared with the control group) for 88 days. At the end of the experiment, twelve lambs were slaughtered. The carcasses were kept at 4°C for 24 h. and  subjected to various physio-chemical measurements. The  results illustrated significant (p <0.05) differences in percentages of (moisture, protein, fat and ash). T1 was superior than other treatment in moisture percentage and T2 was superior in protein percentage. While, control treatment was superior in fat and ash percentages. The results pointed to significant (P<0.05) increased in Water holding capacity percentage. But concerning pH, there were no significant differences among treatments. Myofibril fragmentation index and protein solubility significantly (P<0.05) increased with FP supplementation in the ration. A significant (P<0.05) decreasing of cholesterol concentration. In contrast to that, myoglobin concentration increase with FP. The results of collagen analysis showed significant (P<0.05) differences among treatments, in soluble part in hydroxyproline concentration and collagen content value, increased but in the insoluble part the value decreased. The results showed improvement in total soluble collagen percentage in FP treatments. The results pointed to improvement (P<0.05) in the sensory evaluation in FP treatments as compared to control treatment.

Wistar Shionogi rats of the ( od/od) substrain with the osteogenic disorder are unable to synthesize L-ascorbic acid ( L-AA) and appear to be an appropriate animal model for studying the effect of L-AA in carcinogenesis. To determine the minimal L-AA requirements of these animals for prolonged survival in a satisfactory physical condition during experimentation, four concentrations of L-AA (0.33 g/l, 0.67 g/l, 1.67 g/l and 3.33 g/l) were administered via drinking water to four groups of animals ( n=2). Their water intake per cage was recorded three times weekly and the plasma L-AA levels were determined at the start, after 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks and at the termination of the experiment. To simulate the procedures to be undertaken in oral mucosal carcinogenesis experiments, the animals were gently restrained and a designated amount of sterile NaCl was applied to the palatal mucosa three times a week for 26 weeks. The L-AA supplement group with the lowest concentration (0.33 g/l L-AA) achieved mean plasma levels of 7 ± 1.38 μM, approximately one-eighth that of the normal level (mean plasma L-AA level in outbred Wistar rats was found to be 58 ± 3 μM) whilst those in the higher supplement group (3.33 g/l L-AA) achieved a mean of 18 ± 1.25 μM. All of the animals employed in the present study survived for 26 weeks and showed no clinical signs of L-AA deficiency during this period.

The use of nanomaterials in poultry farming has become increasingly popular as feed additives capable of increasing the productivity of the herd. Nanocrystalline cerium dioxide belongs to nanomaterials with a broad spectrum of activity. Owing to their oxygen non-stoichiometry and low toxicity, cerium dioxide nanoparticles are a very promising object for agriculture. The paper presents the results of studying the meat productivity of quails of the Pharaoh breed when drinking nanocrystalline cerium dioxide in the composition of the feed additive “Nanocerium”. The study was carried out on quails during the rearing period from 14 to 49 days. For the experiment, two groups (control and experimental) of 24 heads each were formed from one day old poultry. The quails were kept in a vivarium, in cage batteries, subject to the accepted microclimate conditions. Poultry of both groups received compound feed, developed taking into account age and physiological characteristics. With drinking water, the of the experimental group additionally received nanocrystalline cerium dioxide as part of the feed additive “Nanocerium” at a dose of 8,6 mg per liter of water for 35 days. The quail population was counted and weighed weekly, starting from the day-old age. The following indicators were determined: safety, dynamics of live weight, average daily gain in live weight. According to the results of the control slaughter and anatomical cutting, the weight of the carcass and the weight of the edible part were determined. Slaughter qualities and morphological composition of quail carcasses were determined by anatomical cutting with the measurement of the following parameters: pre-slaughter weight, half-battered carcass weight, carcass patrana, slaughter yield, weight of edible parts. Drinking the feed additive “Nanocerium” by young quails increased their safety by 4.17%, live weight and absolute average daily gain by 20.3 g and 0.48 g (P <0.05), respectively. The addition of NDC quails to drinking water contributed to an increase in their pre-slaughter weight by 19.3 g, half-gutted carcass by 18.0 g, and gutted by 17.5 g in comparison with the control group. The quail carcasses of the experimental group had a higher yield of edible parts in comparison with the poultry that consumed pure water. Flouride toxicity has acquired a massive form in present times since we have to dig deeper and deeper in search of drinking water. Deeper levels are richer in toxic metals and non metals like Arsenic and Flourides. The present study takes a common freshwater fish Channa punctatus as a bioassay of fluoride toxicity and studies the effects of reversal of toxic effects by use of Ascorbic acid and by keeping the fish in clean water. The results have been compiled in the form of graphs and photomicrograph.

To better understand the origin of microplastics in municipal drinking water, we evaluated 50 mL water samples from different stages of the City of Rochester’s drinking water production and transport route, from Hemlock Lake to the University of Rochester. We directly filtered samples using silicon nitride nanomembrane filters with precisely patterned slit-shaped pores, capturing many of the smallest particulates (<20 µm) that could be absorbed by the human body. We employed machine learning algorithms to quantify the shapes and quantity of debris at different stages of the water transport process, while automatically segregating out fibrous structures from particulate. Particulate concentrations ranged from 13 to 720 particles/mL at different stages of the water transport process and fibrous pollution ranged from 0.4 to 8.3 fibers/mL. A subset of the debris (0.2–8.6%) stained positively with Nile red dye which identifies them as hydrophobic polymers. Further spectroscopic analysis also indicated the presence of many non-plastic particulates, including rust, silicates, and calcium scale. While water leaving the Hemlock Lake facility is mostly devoid of debris, transport through many miles of piping results in the entrainment of a significant amount of debris, including plastics, although in-route reservoirs and end-stage filtration serve to reduce these concentrations.

AbstractParasites reside inside or outside their hosts and get host nutrition and blood. Here, we have emphasized economic losses in cattle caused by parasitic diseases due to ecto- and endo- parasites (flies, ticks, mites and helminths). We have outlined different methods/models including economic evaluation techniques and dynamic analysis as a major class, used for the calculation of economic losses caused by parasites in cattle. According to already conducted studies, a decrease in production is mentioned in quantity and percentage while financial losses are expressed in the form of account with respect to per head, herd or for the specific study area. The parasites cause the reduced production and financial losses due to control, treatment and mortality costs. We calculated the average decrease in milk production and organ condemnation as 1.16 L animal−1 day−1 and 12.95%, respectively, from overall cattle parasitic infections. Moreover, the average calculated financial and percentage losses were US$ 50.67 animal−1 year−1 and 17.94%, respectively. Economically important parasitic diseases mentioned here are caused by specific spp. of protozoans and helminths according to data collected from the literature. Protozoan diseases include tick-borne diseases, coccidiosis, neosporosis, trypanosomiasis and cryptosporidiosis. Losses due to tick-borne infections were encountered for decreased milk production, mortality, treatment and control. Losses from coccidiosis were due to decreased weight gain, treatment costs and mortality. While abortion losses were encountered in neosporosis. Trypanosomiasis caused losses due to a decrease in milk yield. Moreover, only diagnostic (conventional or molecular techniques) cost was taken into account for cryptosporidiosis. Economically important nematode parasites are Oesophagostomum spp., Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylus spp., Strongyloides spp., Ostertagia spp. and Haemonchus placei. Due to the zoonotic importance of echinococcosis, Echinococcus granulosus is the most economically important cestode parasite. Losses caused by echinococcosis were due to organ condemnation, carcass weight loss and decreases hide value, milk production and fecundity. While, fascioliasis is one of the most economically important trematodal disease, which causes cirrhosis of the liver due to parasite migration, and thus, the organ becomes inedible. So, it would be helpful for farmers and researchers to approach these methods/models for calculation of parasitic losses and should adopt suitable measures to avoid long-term economic losses.

AbstractTwenty-nine Holstein-Friesian and 20 Norwegian dairy herd replacements were used to investigate the effect of habituating heifers to the milking parlour environment prior to calving on subsequent lactational performance. The heifers commenced the study at 3 weeks prior to calving when they were allocated on the basis of breed, genetic merit and live weight to either a habituation or no habituation (control) treatment. Heifers were housed together in cubicle accommodation with grass silage offered ad libitum along with 1 kg of concentrates per head per day offered in the feeding passage (control treatment) or in the food managers in the milking parlour (habituation treatment). Animals in the habituation treatment were exposed to the full milking parlour routine once daily (afternoon milking) in a 20-point rotary herringbone parlour. Holstein-Friesian heifers averaged 2.6 kg/day more milk than the Norwegian replacements. Holstein-Friesian heifers also had higher fat and protein yields than Norwegian heifers, however they also lost more body condition during the first 3 months of lactation. Habituated heifers yielded on average 1.3 kg/day more milk (P < 0.001) than the control group of heifers over the first 100 days of lactation (26.7 v. 25.4 (s.e.d. 0.38) kg/day), with the difference being greatest in the first 2 to 3 weeks of lactation. In early lactation, animals on the habituation treatment lost more live weight (0.16 v. 0.02 (s.e.d. 0.061) kg/day) (P < 0.05) and body condition than those on the control treatment. Duration of milking was longer (P < 0.001) (378.4 v. 340.5 (s.e.d. 6.53) s) and milk flow rate slower (P < 0.001) (2.20 v. 2.46 (s.e.d. 0.041) kg/min) respectively for the habituation compared with control group. Somatic cell counts (SCC) were lower (P < 0.001) for habituation group (1.66 v. 1.79 (s.e.d. 0.037) log10SCC per ml), but there was no significant treatment effect on locomotion scores. Reproductive performance was lower for habituated heifers, with increased intervals to conception (P < 0.05) (102 v. 83 (s.e.d. 9.22) days). Habituating heifers to the milking parlour environment prior to calving increased milk production but appeared to have some detrimental effects on reproductive performance.

ABSTRACTIn an experiment designed to investigate the effects on the growth and voluntary food intake of grass silage by calves, the silage was supplemented with varying levels of fish meal and sucrose. The grass silage had a pH of 3·6, a lactic acid content of 90·0 g/kg dry matter (DM) and total nitrogen content of 15·5 g/kg DM. Supplements of 50, 75 and 100 g fish meal per kg silage DM and 50, 75, 100 and 150 g sucrose per kg silage DM were mixed with the silage just prior to feeding. The eight diets were offered to 32, 4-month-old British Friesian steers for 12, 7-day periods. Intake was recorded daily and live weight weekly.Digestibility of organic matter (P < 0·05) and N (P < 0·001) were increased by fish-meal supplementation but the effect of level of fish meal was not significant. Sucrose supplementation significantly decreased both N (P < 0·01) and cellulose (P < 0·05) digestibility. The effect on cellulose digestibility increased with level of sucrose (P < 0·01).The intake of silage DM increased in response to increasing level of fish-meal inclusion when intake was expressed in terms of kg/day (P < 0·01) but not when expressed in g/kg live weight. Total DM intake showed a significant (P < 0·001) linear response when expressed both in terms of kg/day and g/kg live weight. The intake of silage DM declined in response to increased level of sucrose supplementation both in absolute (P < 0·05) and live-weight terms (P < 0·001) but sucrose supplementation had no significant effect on total intake.Live-weight gain was significantly increased with increasing level of fish-meal supplementation (P < 0·001), but sucrose supplementation had a significant effect on live-weight gain relative to the control treatment at only the 75 g/kg level, where live-weight gain was increased.

1. Three levels of a nitrogenous fertilizer, supplying 0,104 and 208 lb. N per acre were applied in 1955 and 1956 to a rye-grass/white clover sward in its fourth and fifth harvest years on a loam soil overlying chalk.2. Levels of animal production were measured using fattening cattle maintained on the plots at a stocking rate of 1⅓ per acre: excess herbage was conserved and fed back to them later.3. Low rainfall in 1955 seriously affected yields of herbage and response to fertilizer, and severely reduced the clover content in all treatments.4. Rate of live-weight gain per head was not reduced by the application of fertilizer at either level. Vigour of the sward was maintained by fertilizer application in a dry spring period in 1956, whereas, in the control treatment, which was low in clover, gains per head were markedly reduced because of inadequate dry-matter production.5. By applying two-thirds of the fertilizer in late summer, a considerable extension of grazing time was obtained, particularly when rainfall was adequate. At the highest level of fertilizer application in 1956 the grazing season was extended from 6 months to 7½, and the cattle continued on conserved feed to a total of 8½ months. Response to the medium and high levels of application on grazed herbage only was 12 and 15 bullock-days per acre, respectively, in 1955. In 1956 the response was 46, and 67/59 (the two high nitrogen treatments). In terms of total live-weight gain per acre the response in 1955 to medium and high levels was 23 and 32% above control, up to 427 lb. per acre: in 1956 it rose to 51 and 52/55% with the highest treatment reaching 657 lb. per acre. Greater financial returns than are indicated by live-weight gain should result from the rising price per pound of carcass as the supply of fresh beef dwindles in early winter.6. Carcass data indicated that both greater rate of gain and the extra time spent on fertilized herbage and conserved feed increased carcass weight and maturity in the normal pattern of development, fat most rapidly, muscle next and bone least. No significant differences in conformation due to treatment was detected by analysis of grouped joints.
