The study was conducted on 164 patients who underwent LIFTin the Fourth unit of Department of General Surgery, Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital from Jan 2019 to Dec 2019. The aim of the study was to evaluate effectiveness of ligation of intersphincteric stula tract (lift) in anal stulas”. The study was conducted by performing LIFTamong 164 patients after satisfying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. In this study, Fistula in ano was more common among the male population with mean age group being the third and the fourth decade. Postoperatively, there was minimal signicant development in wound infection. As a consequence, the stay in the hospital was reduced and so the overall expenditure for patients is decreased. To summarize, the ligation of the intersphincteric stula tract technique for stula in ano appears to be effective, safe and easy to perform with encouraging early outcomes.

A new sphincter-saving procedure involving the ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) procedure was recently described by Rojanasakul et al from Thailand. The main concept in the LIFT is to identify the fistula tract in the intersphincteric space and the subsequent ligation and division of the tract. Some studies abroad have shown a considerably high success rate in terms of wound healing and absence of incontinence in treating fistula-in-ano by this procedure. This study aimed to compare between the earlier fistulectomy and this new innovative LIFT technique. The study was designed as a comparative type of observational study conducted at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka and Popular Medical College Hospital from January 2014 to December 2014. Study was carried out on 40 hospital admitted patients with uncomplicated Fistula-in-ano, irrespective of age and sex. LIFT and fistulectomy was the procedure as operative treatment for their disease. Outpatient follow-up was undertaken. In our study, 30 (75%) male and 10 (25%) female patients were operated with a male to female ratio 3: 1. Mean age was 37.3 years. Vast majority of the cases i.e 23 fistula (68%) was inter-sphincteric type and the rest 17 (32%) were trans-sphincteric type. Fistulectomy took less time than LIFT. Spinal Headache was the most common complication 7.5% (3 cases). No difference was found in comparison to wound healing. (p =00.18). LIFT was found better than fistulectomy regarding post-operative incontinence (p =0.008). LIFT was found better in term of recurrence (p = 0.04) than fistulectomy but in long term there is no difference (p=0.3). In treatment of uncomplicated perianal fistula LIFT has no benefit over fistulectomy

Rotavirus is one of the leading causes of pediatric diarrhea globally. Accurate and rapid diagnosis of Rotavirus diarrhea should reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics and ultimately reduce drug resistance. Study was designed for rapid diagnosis of Rotavirus antigen in stool sample by ICT (Immunochromatographic test) as well as to observe the seasonal variation of rotavirus infection. This cross sectional study was carried out in the department of Microbiology, Dhaka Medical College from January 2011 to December 2011. Eighty stool samples were collected from Dhaka Shishu Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital. All samples were tested for rotavirus antigen by ICT. Among 80 patients, 42 (52.5%) samples were positive for rotavirus antigen. Among these 42 positive samples, 30 (71.43%) were from 0-12 months of age group, 10 (23.81%) from 13 to 24 months of age group and rest 2 (4.76%) from 25 to 36 months of age group. Rotavirus Ag was detected in stool samples from January to April and another peak episode from October to December. Considering the importance of Rotavirus associated diarrhea, rapid detection of Rotavirus infection in human is substantially needed and should be routinely practiced.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjmm.v6i1.19354 Bangladesh J Med Microbiol 2012; 06(01): 11-13

BACKGROUND: The abscesses and anal fistulas represent about 70% of perianal suppuration, with an estimated incidence of 1/10000 inhabitants per year and representing 5% of queries in coloproctology. AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of the interesphincteric ligation technique of the fistulous tract in the treatment of anal fistula. METHODS: The records of eight patients who underwent this technique, evaluating age, gender and presence of incontinence were studied. Was named technical first-step the passage of cotton thread to promote the correct individualization of the fistula and, as the second, the surgical procedure. RESULTS: Two patients were men and eight women. The mean age was 42.8 years. Of these, seven (87.5%) had complete healing of the fistula; six were cured only with this procedure and one required additional operation with simple fistulotomy. Only one patient developed fecal incontinence which was documented by anorectal manometry. There were no deaths in this series. CONCLUSION: The interesphincteric ligation technique of the fistulous tract proved to be effective for the treatment of anal fistula and should not be discouraged despite the occurrence of eventual fecal incontinence.

Background: Most frequently performed gynaecological surgery is hysterectomy. The prevalence of hysterectomy varies within different regions. There are mainly two types of hysterectomies according to which part of uterus is removed. The main types of hysterectomy are total and subtotal or partial hysterectomy. The hysterectomy can be performed by three routes abdominal, laproscopic and vaginal hysterectomy. The main objective of our study is to know most common pathology and different age groups of the patients underwent hysterectomy. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study was carried during period 6 months, at GCS medical college, hospital and research centre, Ahmedabad. Total 100 hysterectomy specimens were analyzed for histopathological lesions. We had taken the clinical and histopathological findings of these cases from the records of department of pathology, GCS medical college , hospital and research centre. Results: In our study of 100 cases, most common age group underwent hysterectomy was 40-49 years and least common age group was 20-29 years. Type of hysterectomy performed most commonly in this study was total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingoophorectomy. Most of lesions were seen in the myometrium 42 cases (42%), Endometrium 32 cases (32%), Cervix 16 cases (16%) and Ovary 10 cases (10%). Hysterectomy remains the widely used treatment modality.

Background: Varicose veins primarily considered to be a cosmetic problem have been widely mistaken to be medically unimportant and given low priority for treatment. The associated pain, swelling, open ulceration and other morbidities increase cost of its management. The debilitation adds on to the time lost from work and wages. Aim: To study the aetiogenesis, pathology, presentation, complications, and management of varicose veins in the study populations. Methods: The current study followed a prospective observational study design among 60 patients visiting Meenakshi Medical College Hospital and Research Institute with symptoms and signs of varicose veins and clinically diagnosed as having varicose veins. Various presentations and complications and treatments were noted and finally followed up for minimum of 6 months. Results and Conclusion: It is found that varicose veins and their associated symptoms and complications constitute the most common chronic vascular disorders leading to surgical treatment. The incidence is on the rise. It is more common in middle- aged group and in males. Patients presented with spectrum of symptoms and signs, dilated and tortuous veins being more common presentations. Long saphenous system is the most common venous system affected. Ankle (lower perforator being the most common incompetent perforators. The outcome of cases of primary varicose vein depends on a thorough and complete clinical examination and duplex scan by an experienced radiologist. Operative line of treatment is a primary procedure in the management of varicose veins of lower Stripping of LSV up to knee and non-stripping of SSV is associated with less morbidity. Accurate assessment reduces the risk of recurrent varicose veins. There must be ample support from the Government so that even the poor will be benefited from the newer modality of treatment of varicose veins.

Background: Meningiomas are neoplasms arising from the arachnoidal cap cells in the meningeal coverings of the spinal cord and brain. These are the most common benign intracranial tumours and account for about 13-26% of all primary brain neoplasms. These are generally benign neoplasms of adults most often seen in middle age, but about 10% are atypical or malignant. These neoplasms are graded by WHO as Grade I , II and III . Benign meningiomas can be cured by surgical resection where as higher grade meningiomas require radiotherapy after surgical resection as these higher grade meningiomas have greater recurrence and aggressive behavior. Aims and Objectives: To study the variants and histopathological spectrum of meningioma and prognosis of variants. Material & Methods: The present study is a prospective study conducted in the department of Pathology, Siddhartha medical college from June 2019-May 2020. During this study, 16 cases of meningiomas were diagnosed and reviewed. Result:In our study of 16 cases females were 62.5%. The most common age group is 41-60 yrs (68.75%). Most common variant was noted to be transitional meningioma followed by meningothelial meningioma. Out of the 16 cases, grade I were 81.25%. Conclusion: Meningiomas account for 28-30% of primary central nervous system tumors and unveil a heterogeneous histopathology. The histological appearance of meningioma determines the grading for the management of the various subtypes and also associated with patient's prognosis. Hence a continuous revision of histopathological classication systems is required to improve the diagnostic accuracy. Benign meningiomas are the most common type. From our study, we conclude that transitional meningioma is the most common benign variant.
