The degree to which environmental factors foster/hinder entrepreneurship is unique to each individual entrepreneur. It is hence not possible to describe the “average” entrepeneur and the “typical” process of venture creation and management. As such, in this paper, a new model conceptualising the relationship between entrepreneurship and environmental factors is proposed. In this model, entrepreneurship (E) is conceptualised as being a function of the environmental factors (Ef) and personal attributes of the entrepreneur (Pa). Hence, E=f(Ef, Pa). The environmental factors affecting E are further categorised into a set of internal factors (Fin) and a set of external factors (Fex). Several studies have already been undertaken to examine the personal attributes of entrepreneurs in Singapore which explains for their success/failure. This study focuses on Ef in Singapore to assess the favorability of Singapore’s environment in promoting entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship development. A set of questionnaire designed for this purpose was sent to over 100 entrepreneurs, from which we received 44 usable responses. Environmental factors surveyed include financing, government assistance schemes, availability of labour, opportunity cost, competition by multi-national and government-related companies, the education system, social and cultural factors, technological advances and market opportunities. A detailed case study was also conducted with a successful local entrepreneur to further refine and validate our findings. Our findings appear to indicate that in Singapore, external factors are more conducive in fostering entreneurship than the internal factors.

This study explored the internal and external factors affecting the first drinking experience during Korean adolescence. To achieve this, we collected 34 cases revealing specific drinking experiences during adolescence in Alcoholic Anonymous (A.A.), Korea. The collected data were analyzed using a qualitative case study method, and the analysis focused on the internal and external factors influencing drinking in adolescence. As per the results, internal factors that influenced drinking in adolescence were “curiosity” and “elevated mood and stress relief”, and external factors were “family”, “friends”, “older friends at school”, “neighbors”, “Korean tradition of alcohol making”, “workplaces that encourage alcohol consumption”, and “a generous drinking culture.” Based on these findings, we suggested several practical alternatives, such as a stringent alcohol punishment system, government-led campaigns to overcome the generous alcohol culture, monitoring the drinking status of working and intern youths, and using local crime prevention guards to curb youth drinking. In future research, it is necessary to quantitatively verify the results of this study to develop theories related to adolescent drinking behavior.

This chapter deals with the sedentary dialects of Egypt, excluding the bedouin dialects of Sinai and the Libyan bedouin dialects on the Mediterranean coast. It attempts to combine historical information on the settlement of Arabic tribes in Egypt with accounts of present-day Egyptian dialects and those of the regions from which those tribes came, initially Yemen and the Levant, later Hejaz, and then the Maghreb. The diversity of the Egyptian Arabic dialect area is partly explained by external factors, namely different layers of arabization over centuries. It is also explained by internal factors, namely dialect contact, which implies phenomena such as hyperdialectisms. Egypt is seen as a dialect area in its own right, but one that shows phenomena of a transitional area between the Arab East and West. A case study of Alexandria deals with dialect death. The role of substrata is discussed, but is considered negligible.
