Bacteriological quality and sensory evaluation of wine produced from blends of date palm fruit and cucumber juice using Saccharomyces cerevisiae was investigated. The yeast was isolated and identified using standard techniques. The S. cerevisiae inoculum was produced using standard procedures and used to ferment the blends of date and cucumber to produce wine. Five (5) samples of wine were produced  from date and cucumber at  various concentration of substrates, anaerobically (Aerobic fermentation were terminated after 6 days and the fermented ‘’musts’’ were sieved to remove the shaft and debris of the crushed fruits.During the anaerobic phase of fermentation, the filtrates obtained after sieving the ‘’musts’’ were transferred into anaerobic fermentation round bottom flask (s) and incubated at room temperature. An air trap were fixed to the fermenting jars. Fermentation were terminated after four (4) weeks). Physicochemical, microbiological  and sensory evaluation (using 7 point hedonic scale by 20 panelist) of the produced wine were studied. The yeast was identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The physiochemical analysis of the produced wines showed that percentage of alcoholic content of wine B had the highest at 16.6 %, as Wine A had 15.8 %, Wine D had 13.17 %, Wine C had 11.17% and Wine E had 10.18% of alcohol content after fermentation. The suspected bacteria isolate were Corynebacterium sp. Neisseria sp, Corynebacterium sp., Micrococcus sp. Enterobacteriaceace sp. Lactobacillu sp.and  Micrococcus sp. and some fungi sp. were isolated from the wines before pasteurization for sensory evaluation. But no microorganisms were detected after pasteurization of the produced wines. The sample C (Date and Cucumber) of ratio 3:1  was significantly preferred (p<0.05) from other wine A, B, D and E in respect to the aroma, test and appearance and over all acceptability. The S. cerevisiae used in the production of the wines gave excellent results. Harnesing the date and cucumber for wine production will reduce post-harvest loss of the fruit (wastage), improve, conribute to the economy and reduce unemployment.

A considerable quantity of agricultural produce in Nigeria gets spoilt due to lack of storage facilities and poor storage conditions. An example of such agricultural produce is date palm which is readily available in the northern parts of Nigeria. This study aimed at evaluating the potential of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y10 isolated from decomposed sugarcane bagasse to produce wine using date palm fruits. The yeast was isolated using yeast extract peptone dextrose agar and was identified by molecular methods. Fermentation of date palm fruit juice was carried out anaerobically for 20 days during which physicochemical parameters and proximate composition were determined using standard methods. The yeast was identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y10 with accession number MG321589. Analysis of physicochemical properties showed that pH dropped from 5.4 to 3.6, titratable acidity increased from 0.25 to 0.71% and specific gravity decreased from 1.1 to 1.01. Proximate composition of produced wine gave low total reducing sugar and low protein of 0.11 and 0.44% respectively and the final alcohol content was 10.4% at the 20th day of fermentation. This study has shown that Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y10 which was isolated from decaying sugarcane bagasse sample has the potential to be used as starter culture for fermentation of date palm for wine production. Keywords: Date palm, Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y10, wine, yeast, alcoholic fermentation

This study aimed at evaluating the fermentative performance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated from palm wine on honey slurry and dates palm fruit juice blend for wine production. The yeast was isolated from palm wine on saboraud dextrose agar (SDA) using pour plate technique and was identified using microscopic and standard biochemical techniques. Physicochemical parameters were determined during 21 days fermentation using standard procedures. The proximate composition of the blend before fermentation and the produced wine was evaluated. The microbiological and sensory evaluations of the produced wine was investigated. The yeast strain was identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The fermentation recorded total viable yeast count from 2.5x106 to 13.0 x 106 CFU/mL. The physicochemical parameters revealed that during the fermentation, the pH values ranged from 4.3 to 5.4, percentage titratable acidity (TTA) ranged from 5.2 to 9.4. The temperature of the fermentation ranged from 24 to 29°C and the specific gravity values decreased steadily from 1.100 to1.010. Proximate composition of the date fruit revealed low protein content between 1.00 and 1.05, but high moisture content (82.43%). The produced wine contained reasonable amount of total carbohydrate A (19.59%), B (25.28%), C (22.7%) and D (21.88%). There were variations on other proximate compositions observed. The produced wine was not contaminated with bacteria and fungi. Sensory evaluation of the wine revealed acceptable aroma/flavor and taste. This study indicates that Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain from the palm wine have good fermentative performance which suggested that it could be used for fruit wine production and other industrial applications preceded by further experiments.

Four insect species were reported as new potential pests of date palm in recent years. They are sorghum chafer (Pachnoda interrupta), the rose chafer (Potosia opaca), the sericine chafer beetle (Maladera insanablis), and the South American palm borer (Pysandisia archon). The first three species belong to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae, while the fourth species is a lepidopteran of the family Castniidae. The injury as well as the economic damage caused by the four species on date palm need to be quantified. Due to climate change and anthropogenic activities, the date palm pest complex is expected to change in the future. To the author's knowledge, this article provides the first report of sorghum chafer as a pest damaging date palm fruit.

Date palm is unisexual, being either male or female. Male and female flowers grow on buds called Spathe, which opens naturally when fully mature. It is easy to identify the male and female flowers. Under the method of manual pollination, pollen from a male flower is smeared over female flowers. The pollen variety and pollination time have important effects on date palm fruit set, yield and quality. This experiment was carried out to study the effect of date pollinizer variety and pollination time on fruit set, growth and development of Medjhol date palm variety, in date palm garden of date palm and tropical fruit research institute of Iran during three years from 2009 to 2011. The trail was randomized complete block design in factorial manner with three pollen variety as Ghaname, Vardy, and Samesmave, two pollination time as 1-3 days before or after spathe opening and four replication. The results showed that the Vardy pollen had significant effects and increased the fertility percent and fruit yield, rather than two other pollen varieties. The pollen variety had no significant effects on fruit quality as total sugar, acidity, and bricx. The pollination time before spathe opening significantly increased fertility percent, decreased fruit weight and date palm yield. Finally the pollen variety and pollination time interaction effects showed that, application of Vardy pollen from 1-3 days after spathe opening with the most production date palm yield, equal 19.9 kilogram per any date palm trees, so this treatment is the best and are recommended.

Background : Female menstrual changes in hormone concentration influence appetite and eating behavior. As well, eating pattern has some influences on menstrual hormonal status. Feeding date palm fruit has been found in our previous report to affect menstrual hormones and some menstrual parameters. Objective: The aim of this research is to study the effect of feeding dates on energy, macronutrient, and fiber intakes, body weight, and body fat%. Additionally, this study aims to find any correlation between menstrual hormone concentration and the above-mentioned parameters. Methods: A convenient sample (n=37) of not-sexually active females aged 20-30 were divided into two groups; one group (dates group) was fed 7 dates and the other served as a control group. The participants of the control group were exposed to the same experimental conditions except for eating dates. Throughout the feeding trial, the volunteers filled a 3-day food record; one menses day and two non-menses days. Results: There was a significant effect of the menstrual status-feeding duration interaction in terms of protein and fat intakes. Additionally, menstrual status, as well as feeding duration, affected energy and macronutrient intakes significantly. Furthermore, feeding duration affected fiber intake significantly. Despite the above-mentioned differences in energy and macronutrient intakes, these effects didn’t affect the body weight and body mass index of the study participants, neither their body fat%. Moreover, we have found significant correlations between nutrient intakes and menstrual hormone concentration. Conclusion : Feeding dates affected energy, macronutrient, and fiber intakes significantly. These effects were related to the changes in menstrual hormone concentration.
