Feminist literary criticism has been focused on the marginalization of women in literary texts and the efforts to deconstruct patriarchy through counter texts, such as Mary Norton’s The Borrowers. This paper aims to review previous studies and expert opinions on Norton’s The Borrowers, especially the arguments in the form of feminist literary criticism. This study employed George’s (2008) model of literature review to review articles employing feminist literary criticism in "The Borrowers." The articles were gathered from books, academic journals, and previous studies on Norton’s The Borrowers. The review reveals that the novel depicted a feminine and masculine environment, constructing biased gender roles and labor division that triggered efforts to gain emancipation and independence in the female character. Telling about miniature family who survived by “borrowing” items from a human, The Borrower is centered towards the young female who deconstructed the traditional binary oppositions concerning the work division and spatial division between males and females. Besides, The Borrowers also presented women’s marginalization, women’s struggles, and gender identity. Such revelation might be useful to extend the fight for gender equity, especially for the children as the target readers.

Feminist literary criticism looks at literature assuming its production from a male-dominated perspective. It re-examines canonical works to show how gender stereotypes are involved in their functioning. It examines (and often rediscovers) works by women for a possible alternative voice. A study of the social suppression and minimalization of women’s literature becomes necessary. These questions emerge: What is sexual difference and how has it been represented? How has the representation of woman relied on a presupposition of inequality between the sexes? Is there a feminine essence, biological or otherwise, that produces ‘women’s writing’? Feminists who believe that a ‘woman’ is culturally or socially constructed look for evidence of that process in literature. The socio-cultural and politico-economic construction of sexual difference is ‘gender.’ A study of the difference between sexual and gender difference can establish alliances with gay and lesbian studies. Feminist criticism sometimes relates to psychoanalysis and/or Marxism, criticizing their masculinism and using their resources. It expands into film/video as well as social-scientific or philosophical texts. Feminists sensitive to racism and imperialism demonstrate the culture-specificity of all of the above.

This research rests on the phenomenon that literary works are not born from cultural vacuum and social emptiness. The pre-Balai Pustaka Indonesian novels mark the public's awareness of the importance of education so that it cannot be separated from its social cultural system. The issue of the importance of women's education and equality discourse has been spawned in pre-Balai Pustaka Indonesian novels. This is important to be reflected as an effort to enrich the literary treasures of Indonesia that often side-stepped pre-Balai Pustaka literary works. Three pre-Balai Pustaka Indonesia novels that raise issues of women's education and equality discourse show the concern of Indonesian authors on issues related to women's education. This research seeks to explore the discourse of equality in three pre-Balai Pustaka Indonesian novels buried in the course of Indonesian literature. Therefore, feminist literary criticism and gender perspective are used. The results of this study contribute to the world of Indonesian literature, especially the activities of Indonesian literary criticism that reflect the presence of pre-Balai Pustaka Indonesia novels for the development of literary criticism in the present time and the future.

Gender equity in education is one of the main targets for social justice and sustainable development. This literature review, from a gender approach, was conducted to understand how the gender digital divide (GDD) in information and communication technologies (ICT) and education are related in Latin American countries. A total of 28 articles have been analyzed as a satisfactory sample of the scientific literature to examine how this relation is explored and its influence, to acknowledge political stakeholders, as well as provide information and proposals to address the digital gender divide in education research in this region. The results show the need to develop research from the pedagogical and gender perspectives in Latin America, since they are not represented within an obvious problem.

Ideologies are contested through discourses; thus, textbooks can be a fertile ground for implanting the prevalence of women's marginalization in society, or they can also be used for deconstructing the ideology. The present study aims to provide a general map of how English as a foreign language reflects gendered stereotypes. The study was library research that used the results of previous studies to answer the research questions. Using George's method, the study chose thirty articles published in 2010 - 2021, then critically reviewed. The critical reading was continued with mapping the results of the studies, and their arguments on gender stereotypes included English as Foreign Language textbooks worldwide. The review revealed that there had been prevalent marginalization of women in English textbooks reflected through the depiction of women as less dominant, inferior than men, primarily domestic, generally weak, powerless, voiceless, and passive. Such male prevalence was also found in Indonesian EFL textbooks. Many previous studies admit that male prevalence and women marginalization in EFL textbooks reflect reality in society. Nevertheless, the present study takes the standpoint that calls for the utilization of textbooks to deconstruct gendered binary oppositions that marginalize women by deliberately designing textbooks that impart awareness about gender equity.

Gender at root is a system of inequality that is founded on cultural beliefs about status differences between men and women. Women usually became the one who are disadvantaged in a relatively similar-situated men. This paper discusses the gender inequality upon women that can be found in Japanese fairy tales that have female main character entitled Kaguyahime and Tsuru no Ongaeshi. Fairy tales chosen as the object of this study because as a traditional story that is told from generation to generation, fairy tales are able to absorb aspects of life found in the supporting community groups, both in the form of social problems, ethics, and others. The results of feminist literary criticism on the object f this study are that both of the fairy tales has four forms of the gender inequality acts toward women, which are marginalization, subordination, stereotyping, and gender-related violence; and none of them has the double workload form. This could be due to the fact that when this fairy tale made, there were none of any women’s activities are performed in the public sphere, as well as being a housewife in their domestic sphere.

This paper aims to do a critical analysis on power and gender constructions from selected Minangkabau folklore which has been transcribed into Minangkabau manuscripts: Kaba Cinduo Mato, Kaba Anggun nan Tongga, Kaba Malin Deman, Kaba Malin Kundang and Kaba Sabai nan Aluih. The main argument of this paper is that Minangkabau folklore strongly presents matrifocality. As a result, these kabas represent woman leadership either in private or public areas. The analysis is conducted within the frame of literary sociology, and feminist literary criticism. Based on the analysis, it can be said that to some extent, representations of woman leadership in the texts have competed against patriarchal conventional assumptions on gender.
