A human person’s work plays a very important role in improving the quality of life, and therefore it is essential to ensure an equal treatment in the establishment, performance and termination of employment relationships. The purpose of this article is to look at so-called indirect discrimination problems in employment relationships. This type of discrimination can be found in cases where seemingly neutral circumstances put a group of people together on one of the many grounds of discrimination (most often the gender difference) in a particularly disadvantaged position in comparison to others. If direct discrimination arises as a result of the deliberate action of the employer, it may look indirect - without the employer being aware of it, and thus it can be difficult to prevent it. Cases where such neutral circumstances are objective and legally justified cannot be regarded as indirect discrimination.

To the Editor.— The commentary by Singer1 must not go unchallenged. This member of the American Academy of Pediatrics takes exception to this statement, and he in no way espouses "religious mumbo-jumbo" which Singer applies to his possible opponents. Nor does this writer espouse the application of heroic measures to the preservation of human life under all circumstances. There is such latitude in Singer's discussion that "quality of life" can mean almost anything. I will not belabor the many aspects of Singer's rhetoric but must make two points.

One of the major problems in modern health care are cerebrovascular disease, which occupy a leading place in the structure of mortality and disability in the population. Among the many clinical features of chronic ischemia of the brain is a key manifestation of cognitive impairment that often determine the severity of condition and quality of life of the patient and his relatives. Diagnosis of cognitive impairment is very important, as the timely appointment of therapy may prevent or at least delay the development of dementia.

While it seems easy to choose from among the many academic programs available to the person, he has to be very careful in his choice because it may affect the kind of life he will have in the future. The study aimed to determine the career choices, occupational status and quality of life of Agricultural Science graduates. Using descriptive correlational research design, data were obtained from 337 total population graduates of Capiz State University, Pontevedra Campus, Philippines. Questionnaires – checklist were personally delivered, and sent either regular or electronic mail. Frequency count, percentage, ranking and mean were used in the analysis of descriptive data while Chi-square was employed as inferential analysis. Results showed that graduates’ career choices relate to occupational status. Moreover, the standard of living is parallel with their perceived quality of life. The university student services office may develop a scheme in assisting students to decide which career to pursue based on their abilities and inclinations. A study on the employability of graduates can be undertaken to verify further and validate the findings.

Psychological, existential, spiritual, and social issues cause much suffering and deserve extensive study to understand these concerns more fully and to intervene more effectively. Themes that abound include communication, coping, ethics, the family, caregiving, quality of life, death and dying, psychiatric disorders, suffering, and the many expressions of distress. Many study designs are possible to explore these themes, often with complementary quantitative and qualitative components. This chapter summarizes the psychometric properties of many of the instruments that are commonly employed in such studies, and describes quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods designs used. The goal is to strengthen research design and optimize research outcomes to benefit the discipline.

Abstract Sickle cell disease (SCD) places a heavy burden on a global and increasing population predominantly resident in resource-poor and developing countries. Progress continues to be made in preventing childhood mortality, and increasing numbers of chronically ill adults with disease are requiring care for disease sequelae. Curative therapies for SCD are therefore attractive to physicians and investigators focused on SCD. Gene therapies are being developed, and several are now in various stages of early-phase human clinical trials. However, we must also pursue avenues through which we can do the most good for the most people alive today. Such efforts include improving our understanding of disease mechanisms and which disease sequelae most strongly affect survival and interfere with quality of life. The pathways leading to disease sequelae are multiple, complex, and highly interactive. Four drugs have now been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for SCD; however, each has a distinct mechanism and a measurable but limited effect on the many clinical sequelae of SCD. We therefore need to learn how to approach multi-agent therapy for SCD. The order of addition of each agent to treat a specific patient will need to be guided by response to previous therapy, risk factors identified for specific disease outcomes, and clinical studies to determine more comprehensively how the 4 currently approved drugs might interact and produce (or not) additive effects. Moreover, this will have to be accomplished with defined end points in mind, according to which pose the greatest threats to quality of life as well as survival.

The prohibition of discrimination, at least on grounds of nationality, has always been a constitutional principle of Community law. Such discrimination can take many forms, since Community law prohibits not only direct discrimination but various forms of indirect discrimination. Furthermore, the Court of Justice has indicated that where discrimination on grounds of nationality is in issue, the requirement of proof is not a heavy one on the complainant. All that is needed to place the burden on the respondent to justify the potentially differential treatment is that complainants show that the requirement applied to them is intrinsically likely, or susceptible by its very nature, to affect them adversely in comparison with the State's own nationals. The modern formulation of the prohibition of discrimination recognizes that protection from discrimination on grounds of nationality is central to the concept of citizenship of the Union. Advocate General Jacobs has said:

The quality of the urban environment determines a lasting relationship between a man and his place of residence. Sustainable management of the urban spaces is crucial as it directly affects their quality. The article analyses the results of the sustainability regarding spatial, socio-economic, technical and environmental aspects, which are one of the many conditions that contribute to the proper functioning of urban life. They also influence the quality of life and residence in the urban environment. There are different ways of expressing the development of the cities defined by specific indicators. They focus mainly on development of the quality of life - social, economic and environmental development. The sustainable urban design is related to issues connected with the form and spatial management. This topic is presented on the example of the city of Oświęcim - the Old Town district with the surrounding area.
