ABSTRACTWound infection is a common risk for patients with chronic nonhealing wounds, causing high morbidity and mortality. Currently, systemic antibiotic treatment is the therapy of choice, despite often leading to several side effects and the risk of an insufficient tissue penetration due to impaired blood supply. If systemically delivered, moxifloxacin penetrates well into inflammatory blister fluid, muscle, and subcutaneous adipose tissues and might therefore be a possible option for the topical treatment of skin and infected skin wounds. In this study, topical application of moxifloxacin was investigated in comparison to mupirocin, linezolid, and gentamicin using a porcine wound infection and a rat burn infection model. Both animal models were performed either by an inoculation with methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus(MRSA) orPseudomonas aeruginosa. Wound fluid, tissue, and blood samples were taken, and bacterial counts as well as the moxifloxacin concentration were determined for a 14-day follow-up. A histological comparison of the rat burn wound tissues was performed. Both strains were susceptible to moxifloxacin and gentamicin, whereas mupirocin and linezolid were effective only against MRSA. All antibiotics showed efficient reduction of bacterial counts, and except with MRSA, infected burn wounds reached bacterial counts below 105CFU/g tissue. Additionally, moxifloxacin was observed to promote wound healing as determined by histologic analysis, while no induction of bacterial resistance was observed during the treatment period. The use of topical antibiotics for the treatment of infected wounds confers many benefits. Moxifloxacin is therefore an ideal candidate, due to its broad antibacterial spectrum, its high efficiency, and its potential to promote wound healing.

Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been implicated as important nosocomial pathogens causing severe infections especially in hospitalized patients. The aim of the study was to assess the antibacterial activity of Aloe vera gel against multidrug resistant S. aureus and P. aeruginosa isolated from wound. Clinical isolates of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa from wound infection were collected from Microbiology laboratory of Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital (BDTH), Kaduna and re-confirmed using standard microbiological procedure. Antibiotic susceptibility pattern of the isolates was determined using Kirby Bauer disk diffusion method. Aloe vera gel was obtained fresh matured leaves of Aloe vera plant and was screened for the presence of phytochemical constituents. Antibacterial activity of the Aloe vera gel against Multidrug Resistant (MDR) Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates was determined by agar well diffusion technique. The result revealed that all the two isolates were resistant to more than three classes of antibiotics. The Staphylococcus aureus isolate was resistant to fluoroquinolone (ciprofloxacin), aminoglycoside (gentamicin), cephalosporin (cefaroline), folate pathway antagonist (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole), penicillin(cefoxitin) and macrolide (erythromycin) while the Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolate was resistant to βlactam (ticarcillin-clavulanate), fluoroquinolone (ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin), aminoglycoside (gentamicin) and cephalosporin (ceftazidime)hence regarded as MDR isolates. Phytochemical screening of the gel revealed the presence of saponins, flavonoids, terpenoids and alkaloids. The Aloe vera gel was found to have antibacterial activity against the test isolates with MIC and MBC values of 25µg/mL and 50µg/mL against MDR S. aureus 50µg/mL and 100µg/mL against MDR P. aeruginosa respectively. The study identified that Aloe vera gel possesses antibacterial activity against MDR S. aureus and P. aeruginosa isolated from wound infection. A successful treatment of wound infection is determined by the proper identification and evaluation of the varied types of microorganisms that colonize the wound surface. Such evaluation will include an antimicrobial susceptibility profiling of the invading pathogen(s) in order to implement an effective and pathogen specific treatment. The antimicrobial susceptibility profile of the bacterial species isolated from wound infections was tested to provide basis for their prudent use as antimicrobials. The standard method of antibiotic sensitivity testing with single antibiotic disc was employed in the analysis. The bacterial isolates tested were Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The organisms were isolated from samples collected from patients at different wards at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The number and percentage occurrence of each individual bacterium encountered varied among the isolates. Pseudomonas aeruginosa has the highest frequency of occurrence of 48.6% accounting for 36 of the 74 bacterial isolates. This was followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli accounting for 17 (23.0%) and 11 (14.9%) respectively. Klebsiella pneumoniae was the least prevalent bacteria species accounting for 10 (13.5%) of the total bacterial count. The study shows imipenem as the most potent antimicrobial agent against the isolates tested. The isolates were moderately sensitive to gentamicin, ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, but highly resistance to ceftazidime, erythromycin, sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim, cefepime, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and aztreonam. The study further reiterates the need for prudent use and control of antimicrobials.

Schiff bases derivatives are one of the most important compounds that have been used in many biological applications such as antimicrobial activity. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are two of the most important pathogenic bacteria that cause wound infection in Iraq and many developing countries. This research involves a synthesis of some Schiff bases compounds [A1 – A3] that were prepared from the condensation of [4- chlorobenzaldehyde, 4-bromobenzaldehyde, and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde] in absolute ethanol. All of these compounds are characterized by [FTIR] spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity test was done according to agar well diffusion method for all derivative compounds with a concentration of 100 mg/ml and 200 mg/ml for each compound. The derivative compound A3 with a concentration of 200 mg/ml had an excellent antibacterial effect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus with a diameter of inhibition zone of 18.417 ± 0.54645 and 16.000 ± 0.57735, respectively. Schiff bases derivatives synthesis compounds in this study (A1 and A2) can be considered as suitable antibacterial materials and can be used as raw materials to the synthesis of new ointment.

A zygomycosis (mucormycosis) ritka, kifejezetten agresszív lefolyású opportunista infekció, amelyet a Zygomycota (Járomspórás gombák) törzs Zygomycetes osztályába tartozó gombák okoznak. Jellemzően immunhiány, neutropenia, vastúlterhelés, hematológiai betegség, illetve diabeteses ketoacidosis eseteiben fordul elő. Esetismertetés: A szerzők 18 éves, 9 éve inzulindependens diabetes mellitusban szenvedő, rossz compliance-szel rendelkező beteg kórtörténetét ismertetik. Súlyos állapotban, beszűkült tudattal, ketoacidosisban, orrmelléküreg-gyulladásra utaló egyoldali periorbitalis duzzanattal, bőrpírral került kórházba. Bár az endoszkópos sinusműtét során vett váladékból methicillinrezisztens Staphylococcus aureus és Pseudomonas aeruginosa tenyészett, a beteg anamnézise, klinikuma zygomycosis gyanúját keltette, emiatt amphotericin-B-kezelést indítottak. Szövettani, illetve mikrobiológiai vizsgálatok során Rhizopus oryzae okozta invazív infekció igazolódott. Megbeszélés: Az antifungális kezelés ismételt sebészeti beavatkozásokkal és adjuváns granulocytakolónia-stimuláló faktor alkalmazásával kiegészítve eredményesnek bizonyult. The study involved the selection of two isolates from Bacillus subtilis to investigate their inhibitory activity against some bacterial pathogens. B sub-bacteria were found to have a broad spectrum against test bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. They were about 23-30 mm and less against Klebsiella sp. The sensitivity of some antibodies was tested on the test samples. The results showed that the inhibitory ability of bacterial growth in the test samples using B. subtilis extract was more effective than the antibiotics used.

Objetivos: avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana em extrato aquoso, hidroalcoólico e alcoólico das folhas de espécies da família Lamiaceae frente a bactérias de interesse. Método: Foram escolhidas quatro espécies: Ocimum gratissimum, Plectranthus amboinicus, Mentha arvensis e Plectranthus barbatus. A partir das folhas foram confeccionados os extratos aquoso, hidroalcoólico e alcoólico nas concentrações 100mg/mL, 50mg/mL e 25mg/mL. Foram selecionadas as bactérias Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus e Pseudomonas aeruginosa para os ensaios de antibiose em Ágar Mueller-Hinton. Resultados: P. barbatus, em seu extrato hidroalcoólico mostrou ativo nas três concentrações para bactéria S. aureus, e ainda foi ativo para P. aeruginosa, demonstrando no extrato alcoólico atividade frente as bactérias. Para M. arvensis e P. amboinicus, seus extratos hidroalcoólico e alcoólico apresentaram atividade para S. aureus. Conclusão: Sugere-se que as espécies em questão apresentem boa atividade antimicrobiana, sendo necessária a realização de mais estudos para melhor entender esse mecanismo.
